Christophe,

That is the modification I thought you were referring to.

If your K2 serial number is 3000 or higher, that mod is already
installed, and you do NOT have to do it.
Notice that it refers to the REV A RF board.  Rev B boards are used in
K2s with a serial number of 3000 or more.
Also if your K2 is serial number 3000 or more, when you get to page 59,
you should not do the Control Board wiring changes shown there.  Those
changes have already been embedded on the REV B board.

Yes, an infinity reading is good at the AF pad on the KPA100 board.  See
the "I triangle" note near the top of the 2nd column on page 22.

Christophe,

If your K2 serial number is 3000 or greater, those modifications do not
have to be done at all, they are already present on the RF Board.

You do need to mount the headers at P3 and P6 and remove pin 4 from the
10 pin header at Control Board P4.

Those changes may be made at any time.

I am confused about your question of "first tests step 2 of the KPA100
with dialog and assembly in the K2"  I think we have a language barrier.
Please restate with reference to the page number in the manual.

Assembly, Part 1 (page 12) comes before the "Initial Tests" (page 22)
and the PA transistors are not mounted.

Sorry, but my French is lacking.  I spent 15 months in France with the
Army in 1963/4 but learned only enough words to buy what I needed or
order a meal.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 - INFO 80 problem

2014-03-27 Thread Christophe F8ACF-56
hello juliano,

I'll put the single 080 info Book of troubleshooting, if it can help you

If you saw the message INFO 080, the
I/O controller (IOC, RF-U1) or other auxBus
device did not respond to messages from the
main processor (MCU). Turn power OFF and
back ON; if you hear some relays switching
on power-up, the IOC may be OK, and the
problem is likely to be with the AuxBus
(081)
  If you do not hear any relays switching on
power-up, your IOC (RF-U1) may be
defective. Inspect U1 carefully to see if you
have installed it backwards or if any pins are
bent.
  Pull U1 out, check its pins, then re-install it,
making sure all pins make good contact with
the IC socket. Check the 4-MHz oscillator
(075).
  Remove the bottom cover and verify that all
pins of U1’s socket are soldered, as well as
those of the 6V regulator (RF-U2), and U1’s
4 MHz oscillator (RF-Z5).
  With power ON, check all voltages
associated with U1. You should see 6V at
pins 1 and 20 at all times, even when the IOC
is sleeping (not being accessed by the MCU).

Cannot get 4.0 MHz R30 voltage to change at all - it measures 7.97V.  Have
confirmed all the cap values, varicap diodes are correct parts, T5 wound
and wired correctly.

Have scoped the area comparing to a second operational K2 the wave forms
look and behave the same as the rigs are tuned. The voltage on R30 is
simply too high at 4.0 MHz.

I set the K2 to 3.5MHz and adjusted L30 for the lowest voltage, this gave
the following results:

3.50   4.14    4.00    7.97
7.00   4.39    7.30    6.30

Ralf and Christophe,

Yes, what you say is true, but the answer is still in the filter alignment.
All the SSB filters should be aligned - AND - in many (most) K2s built
in the last several years, the suggested settings for the SSB filters
other than the OP1 BFOs do not work well.  That is because the varactors
have changed (the type has not changed, but the capacity range has
increased - blame the manufacturer!).
The result of this varactor variation is that the filter width displayed
by the K2 is usually much more narrow than the actual width (not true
for the OP1 filter which has no varactors).  I do not know of any way to
easily find the actual width of the filter other than using an audio
spectrum analyzer like Spectrogram.

There is a point I don't understand: The K2 switches to VFO below rx

that the BFO is properly set for LSB reception on 17 and below? If he can
also receive USB on 20, shouldn't that mean that both BFO settings are ok?

 Christophe,

The usual cause is that the LSB BFOs are not set up properly.
I strongly urge the use of Spectrogram or other audio spectrum analyzer
to see where the filter passband is placed.
See part 3 on the K2 Dial Calibration article on my website
www.w3fpr.com.  If you need to obtain Spectrogram, look near the bottom
of the opening page on my website for the link.

Christophe,

You must follow the *exact* sequence given in the manual to set the date
and time.
Anything out of sequence will block the ability to change it.  That was
done so the time and date could not be changed by idle fingers playing
with your settings - such as might be done by guest operators a Field
Day or other similar contests.

Christophe,

Look on the other side of that crystal envelope.  You should find a
number penned in by hand.  That is the number you need.
It is the nearest 100 Hz increment that the crystals were matched to.
The crystals are actually matched closer than that (I recall matched to
10 Hz), but that number is sufficient for setting the filter properly
later in the alignment procedure.

Yes, it's designed to do just that. Furthermore, you can have the KAT2 ATU
and even the battery in your QRP K2 while traveling.

You just change the top part of the radio. Your K2 comes with a QRP cover
that contains the speaker and, if you desire, the KAT2 ATU and battery. You
remove a few screws, lift the KPA100 amplifier module off of your K2 and
replace it with the QRP cover. It takes less than 5 minutes. Not only is the
K2 now self-contained with, if you choose, battery and ATU, it's a lot
lighter, Hi!

I stalled the display as described in the manual listening WWW 10 mhz, the

I hear both the beacon on 14.100 in CW and even if I put the problem FL1 and

K2 is OK to transmission anything I already reported some contacts what fun!

Christophe,

What you observe is normal if your sidetone pitch setting is 700 Hz.

When using CW mode, the K2 transmit frequency will be offset from the
receive frequency by the amount of the sidetone pitch setting you have
in the menu.  If you are in CW normal, transmit will be lower, in CW
reverse, it will be higher.

There is no offset for SSB or RTTY modes - the transmitted carrier
(suppressed) frequency will be the same as the receive carrier frequency.

If you need assistance calibrating the K2 dial frequency, read the K2
Dial Calibration article on my website www.w3fpr.com.

Christophe,

The voltage that you see in the display will always be lower than the
voltage at the input power jack.
There is a reverse polarity protection diode in the K2 and there is a
slight voltage drop across the fuse.
That will make the voltage inside the K2 0.4 to 0.5 volts lower than the
voltage of your power source.

Chris,

The diagram on page 46 is for what is commonly referred to as the internal
counter probe
Yes, the Probe package contains other parts for constructing an RF Probe (see
page 9 of Appendix E for a schematic).  There are no instructions for
constructing the RF Probe, but it is almost self explanatory.  Yes, the circuit
traces for the RF Probe is built onto the back of the Switch Spacing Tool

Hi all started construction of my new K2 last weekend and was amazed at the
quality of the build instructions and the PCB.
However on building the control board the resistor packs RP2 and RP4 82K
Ohms were not in the kit but some 10 legged devices were supplied instead.
As it's Christmas and the post will be busy I was going to substitute some
small size 82K resistors for the two resistor packs but I'm not sure how the
resistor pack pin out is configured.
Could someone let me know the pin outs for the above resistors please.
Happy Christmas,
Paul Jackson

Christophe,
That header is to select the input to the internal K2 voltmeter.  If you
are using that sincle wire probe that the manual instructs you to build,
you will put the jumper on the two pins marked EXT, but normally you
will place it on the pins marked INT

Note, if you have th ejumper on EXT and do not connect a voltage to the
probe, you will see an occasional LO BAT display flashed.

The radio was sitting by 50 amp astron power supply which was on.

Moved radio up to bedroom this morning w/ dummy load,  powered by an optima
blue top deep cycle battery.  Same results.  Could tune in to CW signal using
yaesu radio in basement.

Ordered the optional VCOSHLDKT today anyway since the K2 will end up down by
the power supply.

 Calvin,

Do you have anything with a transformer within 2 feet of the K2?  If so,
isolate the K2 by moving it away from everything and see if the ripple goes
 away.

If the problem disappears with the isolation, you can install the optional
VCOSHLDKT which shields the VFO inductor.

Hello, First time posting to the list.

Completed K2 #7239 today.  Made a contact with a station on cw, 10 watts,
7.1065 mhz.  He reported back that my CW signal had a very heavy ripple on
 the signal.

I connected the output to a Oscilloscope and was able to see a ripple on the
waveform when keying a solid carrier at a few watts.  Also listened to my
signal on another receiver and could hear a very bad modulated CW tone.

This is a barebones K2 with no options installed at this point.  Every
measurement in the testing was all within specs and the alignment of the
radio had no problems.  Power output on all bands was OK.

Thanks for any help in correcting this problem.
