[Elecraft] loss of receive audio on K3
I had the strangest thing happenyesterday (K3, 1st prod run). All of a sudden, I lost all audio output (headphones). I pull the headphones, but same thing on the internal spkr. Radio was tuning, receiving (per P3) and transmitting, but zero AF output. After 15 seconds of wonder, I turned the K3off, waited 30 seconds and turned it back on. All was back to normal. At one point, I heard a low rumble, like someone strong was tuning up on me. But no. That immediately preceded the loss of AF. After I turned it back on, after another 5-10 minutes, I again heard the low rumble..but nobody tuning up on me...and this time, no loss of AF. Again that same rumble happened again, but that time the AF went to about 50% but then came back after I transmitted a dit (just dumb luck timing?). Have you heard any stories like this before or is this a novel experience? Re: [Elecraft] New CW audio recording: K3 vs. K4D (E.H. Russell)
1. Nice job by 2RF. 2. Instant reply calling his approach smoke signals 3. 2RF sez "nope" 4. Elecraft effectively sez: 2RF post is NOT fake news and cites some possible issues. Good for Elecraft (as usual). Vetting on a pre-reflector posting basis is a GREAT idea. We are all anxious to "hear" anything, but GIGO = upset and confused customers. 5. I discount the delta due to external audio devices to some extent because it is the same set up (both TV and RF) for the K3 and K4. So any flaws on either end (making the recording or analyzing the recording) cancel out...it's all going through the same "stuff." [Elecraft] N6TV recording K4 K3
Thanks to TV for doing these. I really think that while well intentioned, these recordings are "not much" in terms of comparing the two radios (or even just the K4 alone), unless you're an operator who is concerned about exactly the conditions (parameters) which are being used for the recordings. It's great to hear that "a neighbor" with a 65db over 9 signal can be "handled" with ease. I don't think many of us experience that scenario. RM just asked for a "pile-up" simulation. OK, that's good, but how well will the recording be an honest representation of what a human with headphones connected to the radio be? I mean, you can't see what 4K Ulta HD TV looks like by watching an example on an "older" TV. I am more concerned about how the radio works under "contest" conditions; that is, with many big signals on the band (not just one at 65db over 9) while trying to pull out 4th tier signals in a pileup. For me, that's the test that matters. I don't know how many guys on here are serious DXer or are serious contesters. For me, if the k4 can "pass the test" for the latter group, then the receiver should be fine for everybody else. Maybe FD will give us an idea (if recorded as forecast). But still, we are all listening through a myriad of different devices to hear / observe what we hope to discern about the K4 receiver. Finally, while it is encouraging that Elecraft can provide some "hints" about how to tweak the K4 to get to what TV is looking for, it is a reminder that this is still a work in progress. Patience is a virtue. de Doug KR2Q I have two K3 radios, original owner, both 3 digit SN, both "kit" form. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] Reaching across the chronological divide
I was caught off guard by Wayne's post. What was he trying to say? Was he trying to say why the K3 is going away and now we have the K4's? Maybe. It's prettier and more likely to attract the younger crowd based on looks? Could be, but that price? Nope. I got interested in ham radio when a friend in the 7th grade got his license...or maybe it was 8th grade. I thought it was "cool" that he was talking with stations in other states that were not next door to our state (NJ). One day, my mom drove me over and I caught him working DX (Europe). Wow. That did it for me. It was like magic. And Morse code, difficult as it may have been to learn, was another aspect of the magic. After my General class came in the mail, I swore off CW. Good bye forever. I spent the first couple years working DX, building up my totals (on mostly SSB, but even AM back then. I still remember working ZD3E on 10m AM). But pretty quickly (relative term), I ran out of stuff to work. Where was all the "good" DX? On CW! So back I went...and loaded up my log with "good" DX, especially the deep Asian Soviet states. I just loved their CW tone (not clean). And one day, I happened to run into a DX contest. This was like a year's worth of DXing rolled up into 1 day (I didn't know the contest ran for 48 hours). It was heaven. And that started me on contesting. I agree with the comments that contesting is growing. It is! See, for example, https://cqww.com/stats.htm What happened in the 21st century? Nobody knows for sure, but it was big (at least for contesting). I also agree with the comment that not everybody contests for the entire contest. Hardly! See https://cqww.com/blog/operating-time-for-single-operator-entries/ This is a bit dated, but since I am the one who does this calculation, I can tell you that i continues even today. Most guy give out points...not trying to win. Most entrants (not participants, but actual entrants) only operate a total of 15 hours or less. That's like 3 hours in the morning and 4 hours in evening on Sat and Sun. Not much really. But for today's active kids, who has time to devote to contesting when they can be gaming? Most gaming is completed in short bursts of time. Same with social media. With contesting, well, you gotta wait until it's over at 2359z Sunday. And then it takes a long time to get anything close to real results. Long time = weeks to get the raw scores (which is a GIANT improvement over the old days). Now a real marketing question. Does it matter if the newbies to ham radio are teenagers? So what if the newbies are all "new retirees?" I don't know if that is true, but for me, inflow is inflow. I know lots of guys my age who wanted to be a ham when they were my age when I got my license, but didn't, but now still do and arefinally getting their ticket. AND, they have more $$ to spend than some 13 year old (like I and my friend were when we got interested). How does "age of entry" = maintenance of the population? Whatever. Enough rambling, cuz that's all I have to say. I have the next 2 weeks off from work and I'm catching up on "other" radio stuff, like this reflector. de Doug KR2Q __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] K3/K2: cumulative HF xcvr review from eHam
Jim, K9YC sed: [snip] I wouldn't put too much credence in a sort like this -- ratings like this are highly subjective [end snip] Which is exactly why I limited the list to 100 or more reviews. I figure that folks who buy, or might buy, a K3 or K2 (or any other rig), are probably as subjective as these reviews. Hence, increased validity overall for the average Joe Ham. If you were to review only serious contesters, I'm sure the K3 would stand out even more. But most of the reviews, by category of reviewer, are not from contesters. [Elecraft] K3: Real world use of 1.8 filter
My 2 cents: For rag chewing the stock wide filter is fine. In fact, I still use the stock SSB filter in both of my K3s and I am a pretty serious contester (nobody holds more current CQWW USA contest records than I do). Remember that a roofing filter is NOT what determines your final IF bandwidth. It does, apparently, contribute a little, but the DSP filtering is mostly what is doing that. So for me, the difference between how many signals are going to fall inside your passband when from 2.7 to 2.1 to 1.8 on SSB is, well, not much. If anyone in the USA has such a concern, for me, is appropriate only for contesting. Even when DXing, either your calling on his frequency or if split, well, hopefully he is asked for a split of more than just up 1. Remember, this is SSB. Some will say that on 80/160, there are a very few number of DXing occasions where the narrower SSB filter can help. I won't argue that. I have to wonder out loud how many guys are feeling the DSP filter width impact when they go from their 2.7 to 2.1 to 1.8 on SSB versus how much of that is improvement in IMD reduction specs. For 99%, they probably are feeling the narrower DSP filter impact (which means the narrower roofing filter has essentially no impact at all). If the SSB band is packed with wall-to-wall very, very, very strong signals, then I'm betting that the roofing filter BW just won't matter for the vast majority of ops. Are there times when the narrower roofing filters are better? Probably a handful per contest. But for me, when contesting, I really don't want to deal with such a situation. I can probably have a better rate (if I'm running) by finding a better QRG to attempt to run (call CQ). It's mostly how much you want to defend your frequency versus how much you want to improve your QSO rate. YMMV. So to summarize...for my 2 cents, for rag-chewing the stock SSB filter is VFB. de Doug KR2Q __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3: use of 1.8 filter - clarification
I've received emails replies (direct and otherwise) that, for me, indicate that I should elaborate/clarify what I am referring to. Let's assume that you have a 2.7 and 2.1 roofing filter. If you set up your narrower SSB filter according the the manual, which is what the majority of K3 ops do, as you transition from, 2.7 to 2.1 using the width knob, you are doing two separate, but linked things. First, you are reducing the DSP BW. Sync'ed to that (you have no choice without manual intervention, ie faking out the K3), as you get to 2.1 kHz in the DSP BW, you simultaneously switch from the 2.7 to the 2.1 roofing filter. Unless you unhook this coupling between the DSP BW and the Roofing Filter BW, you simply cannot tell which one is influencing what you hear (what I called feel). So when you get down to 2.1 (from 2.7) are you appreciating the impact of the DSP or the roofing filter - or maybe both? How would you know? I am saying that unless you are operating in extremely crowded band conditions (not with just one interfering, very near-by station) you are appreciating the impact due to the DSP BW and certainly NOT the roofing filter. It is possible to manually intervene to alter (even temporarily turn off) the (point of) sync between the DSP BW and the roofing filter (narrower) BW. And I am saying that unless you actually do this de-linking, that you won't be able to know/confirm the true source of what you are hearing / feeling. I'm betting that for the vast majority, especially non-contesters and non-160 serious DXers, what you hear is due to the DSP BW. The roofing filters are used for reducing IMD. A receiver with poor IMD will experience phantom signals due to the mixing of other very strong signals (multiple) on the band and these phantom signals can potentially cover up real, but weak, signals. You can usually identify such IMD as received squeaks, pops, whines, groans, etc. The band will sound like it is covered with garbage - even somewhat musical. The addition of the appropriate roofing filter can reduce or eliminate this. This is esp true (for me) on CW and especially (for me) on the low bands (lots of very strong signals) during a contest. In the old days, I've had many receivers that would simply collapse under the strain. It made tuning across the band painful and arduous when trying to pick out weaker signals. After hours and hours of this, it is very fatiguing. I use the 5 pole 500hz filter on CW for both of my K3s. Is it wrong to get a narrow filter? Of course not. But unless you are planning on operating in the midst of multiple, super strong signals, then I do not see much logic in getting a narrower CW filter...and certainly not a narrower SSB filter for SSB use. At least on CW, you can fit another signal inside the passband (very rare) when going from 500 to 200hz, but on SSB, going from 2.7 to 2.1? No way that will fit another signal in that delta (which is half of the difference or just 300hz.). Now, if you have the sub-receiver and want to match filters, then I see nothing wrong with buying one of the narrower (or even wider) SSB filters. But that would be motivated by a different reason. If you're spending money frugally or even just being thrifty, (however you want to define that) you can stick with the 2.7 stock filter. If money isn't an issue (the cost isn't that much different), you sure can't be hurt by getting a narrower SSB filter, except as cited by others, when it comes to ease of tuning in a station (though I have never experienced such difficulty). Lots of folks simply like to load up the open the slots. That is yet another motivation...not much to do with operating. Hope this helped to clarify what I was trying to get across. de Doug __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3: use of 1.8 filter - clarification
IMHO, there are few folks in the contest world that are better technically than Bill (W4ZV), so I would suggest that everyone take his comments very seriously. Bill...I do have a question or two, with respect to your statement below. 1. Just how often do you find that you run into a situation such as you describe below? I don't mean simply, during every a contest, I mean more like how often during a contest? For how many Q's? 2. If the really close and really strong signal is pumping your AGC, why not just turn off the AGC and ride the RF? This is not a rhetorical question, because I know you do this. So I'd like to learn why you would, in some situations, prefer to not do that. I would love to learn a new trick! 3. And just out of curiosity (on SSB), how long would you tolerate being so close to someone who would pump your AGC? Of course, for me (QRP), the answer is zero seconds. :-) W4ZV said: I agree IMD reduction is not a big issue on SSB but blocking dynamic range (BDR) is the primary reason I sometimes need a narrower filter. If you have an S9+25 SSB signal CQing next to you (sometimes the case in crowded contests), a narrower filter will prevent it from de-sensing your receiver. If part of the interfering signal falls inside your 2.7k filter, signals on your frequency will be gain modulated by his signal (commonly called AGC pumping). In this case a narrower filter will prevent the problem. Of course when this happens, we still have to contend with his transmitted splatter (typical SSB TXs run -35 dB IMD which would result in ~S7 splatter from an S9+25 signal), but at least you can still copy signals at S7 or above (and lower when he's not transmitting). 73, Bill __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] KX3 vs FT817 (comparing apples+oranges)
Let me start off by stating that I own a K2, a pair of K3's and a P3. I also own an FT817. 1. Yes, the KX3 is way better in terms of rx specs and some options 2. The FT817 ain't bad either, especially factoring in price (well, my price) These are really two very different radios. Personally, I like the form factor on the FT817. It is easy to pack (very flat) and I don't worry about hurting it when in the field. I am happy to throw it around. I would not feel that way about the KX3: kid gloves for sure. Back in 2003, the price was $569 for FT817, which included a microphone with up/down buttons, internal (removable), chargeable battery pack, a battery tray for AA cells, a rubber duck for 2 meters, a rubber duck for 6 meters, a hard bound manual, and carrying strap (over your shoulder, hooks onto the radio), a DC power cable (with snap-on ferrite choke), and probably some other stuff I have forgotten about...oh yeah.. a big world map (LOL). At the time, Yaesu offered a $100 factory rebate (it was a Xmas special), so I got the radio and all that other stuff, with free shipping, for $469. Not too shabby...it was an easy decision. As I see it, the KX3 (built) with those options is well over 1k. So, surprise-surprise, you pay more, you get more. Also back in 2003, I had the well-respected (at the time) contest quality radio, the Kenwood TS940. The 940, purchased new, was quite old at that date. The FT817, maybe 5% the size of the 940, blew the doors off the big radio in terms of RX dynamics, esp on 40. It was shocking. But that was 8 years ago now. For me, I rather have to laugh a bit at the OUTSTANDING specs (in earlier private emails) for the KX3 RX. Why laugh? Because if you are using this radio in the field, you probably will never have to use most of what is available to you...and this was primarily designed as a Trail Radio, right? You are just not going to get that much signal coming into your front end using a simple (low) wire or buddipole, etc. unless you mean once per year on Field Day where there are multiple radios set up right on top of each other. But hey...if it can be built so well, why not! But comparing it to the 817, for me, doesn't make a lot of sense, other than to indicate that the 817 set some sort of standard for super tiny radios. See mine at https://picasaweb.google.com/dougzzz/FT8172003Dec Also, I have won my fair share of contest certificates, using the FT817, including on 160 (a very tough band on RX front ends). For what it is, it works real well. It's no K3, but it ain't bad...and it sure is FUN. I have not ordered a KX3 yet. This time around, I plan to wait a year or so to let things shake out. But if I do order one, it probably won't be to replace the 817, which is a totally different radio. And yes, my FT817 does copy the WX station...and a whole lot more. OK, before you blast away, please go back to the top and reread the first sentence. HNY and GL to all those happy KX3 purchasers. [Elecraft] Overtighted Case Screw Removal?
I recently upgraded my first run K3 and SN 822. 822 was fine, but with #295, I had the same thing as you describe..several times. I sure did not tighten them that much when I put it together! Besides what Bill has contributed to your issue, I had to leave the 2D in place and manage to remove all the other screws so that the block came off with the side panel. I then used a traditional pliers to undo the block. So like I said, no way I made it that tight originally. Maybe it's an Elecraft feature...self-tightening screws? LOL So you may need to be a bit more creative than simply rocking the side panel 30 degrees to loosen it up (or other panels). Worst case, you can get one of the backwards drill bits (no, I don't know what they are really called) and take it out that way. I did not need to do that. de Doug KR2Q __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Almost 30 years ago now, before I was 99.% a QRPer, I had an Alpha 76CA (3 tubes). It had a giant swamping pad on the input (I still have it - the swamping pad, that is). Just take it out and like magic, you could drive the amp with QRP. My intention was never to exceed legal limit, just to be able to use the amp when driven with a QRP rig. I don't remember how much out I could get with QRP in, but it was nowhere near 1500 watts. I have no clue what they have on the inside of the KPA500, but if there is a swamping pad, you can probably take it out. What is Elecraft's motto? Hands-on radio? :-) When I used to use a Ten Tec Titan Amp, it required 36 watts of drive for 1500 watts out on 20m. That was probably 25 years ago. Finally, if you want to fly under the radar, there are certain high quality amplifier manufacturers overseas (closer to W6 than W2...hint hint) who will custom make you an amp for low power drive. [Elecraft] APF comment by Don
Don said: but in these days of transceivers, I think we have lost that ability KR2Q sez: Not if they bother to use the CWT tool ! :-) The huge problem with the K3 isyou have to actually know how to use the great tools it affords you with (in case you can't tell, that is sarcasm). I always used to zero beat (or adjust my xmit qrg accordingly slightly high) by ear. But I have been, and continue to be, totally wow'ed by the CWT and almost never use my ears for that any more, except when I feel the need to confirm that my ears are at least as good as the CWT [they are]with the latter (CWT) being much better for me because it frees up my hearing to focus on receiving CW rather than tuning in by matching tones. When I read about the CWT before any radios were delivered, I thought, you gotta be kidding. Not any more. CWT is just way more efficient (I'm a contester and time matters). __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] FSK power
I really thought that someone else would have picked up on this, but since I haven't seen it yet, here goes. One post indicated that moving from 50 to 100 watts was doesn't matter but that going from 500 to 1kw, well, OK. Hey, both are 3db and the relative change in power for either will be identicalsame as going from 2 watts to 4 watts (that's more within my domain). Practically speaking, if the bands are good and you're not in a pile-up situation, and your signal is not just at the noise level, then yes, 3db wont matter. During a contest, where you're all on the same QRG, as is the case in RY, louder is better. de Doug KR2Q __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3 : SSB modulation
From one contester to another It is my experience that it takes more set up to get your transmitted audio to sound more like the Kenwood of old (nothing ever came close to the Signal/One transmitted audio). I got on a dead band with a local who has known me for decades and we played with the different audit xmit bands...a LOT of playing. As W3FPR suggested, I say to make sure the low audio bands are bottomed out (minimum setting). That is wasted power unless you're into ESSB (not contesting). I know that the first time KT3Y got on SSB (multi-op) they were ready to throw the radios out, but that's because they did zero setup. Even though you say you have adjusted a lot of knobs, I suggest focusing on the audio band adjustments ALONG WITH the other advice (such as from W4ZV). I recently helped another local set up his audio (he got some complaints too) and the first thing I had him do was to shut down (max minus dbs) the low audio segments/bands for the xmit. He didn't sound bad to begin with, but for contesting, well, it made a nice difference. [Elecraft] OT: FCC seeks comments on blanket amateur radio waiver for disaster drills
http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DA-10-365A1.pdf The Federal Communications Commission is accepting comments through April 2 on an AHA request for a blanket waiver to permit hospitals seeking accreditation from The Joint Commission to use amateur radio operators who are hospital employees to transmit communications on behalf of the hospital as part of emergency preparedness drills. Hospitals accredited by The Joint Commission must prepare an emergency operations plan setting forth how the hospital will communicate during emergencies, establish back-up communications links to communicate essential information if primary communication systems fail, and test their emergency operations plans twice annually. The AHA requested the blanket waiver last month as an interim solution to prevent the FCC and hospitals from having to prepare, file and process a raft of waiver requests while the FCC prepares a proposed rule that would allow amateur radio operators who are hospital employees to participate in drills. de Doug KR2Q Tnx for the BW __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3 vers K2 questions that I keep seeimg
Is it worth it can be answered from at least two different approaches: 1. Are you interested in PERFORMANCE and if so, to what degree. Your answer depends on what type of operating you do. Do you do a lot of contesting? Are you a serious DXer? Do you work DX on Top Band? Do you operate esoteric modes such as ESSB? Do you need a radio with diversity reception (optional)? How about a radio that covers 160 - 2 in a single box? Is being able to clear the RIT/XIT with the push of a button important? If your answer to any of these is YES, then you may want the K3. If you are a casual operator who likes to makes Q's on a band w/o much QRM and turns the rig off if the signal are weak because you want arm-chair copy, QSY away from QRM because of low tolerance, etc., then the answer may be no. 2. If you simply need to own the best performing rig available irrespective of how you operate, then the K3 is for you. Failing the YES answer to the above, I'd stick with the K2/100 (I have two K3s and 1 K2). The other BIG consideration (question) for you is, Are you comfortable operating QRP after having operated QRO (100 watts). There IS a BIG difference! This is NOT a is it worth it question, but a can you adapt to it question. de Doug KR2Q __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3: DSP rev D - now I get it
One of the posts that I found confusing and prompted a reply from me was from Eric: http://mailman.qth.net/pipermail/elecraft/2009-December/122284.html Specifically, the 2nd sentence. BUT NOW I've finally put it all together (Okay, maybe I'm a bit slow). If you are also confused, I hope this helps (and I hope I've got it right). If you're not confused, stop reading now, unless you are Eric or Wayne in which case you may jump directly to the bottom. The DSP board revision is modifying component values on the board itself to expand the low frequency (audio) response. Elecraft is using different component changes than those offered by W9AC. If you buy the upgraded DSP board, you get the Elecraft changes which enhance the low end of audio (more bass). On top of that, there is also the LPF board. This add-on is just what it says, a Low Pass Filter. In other words, it knocks out the higher audio frequencies, which may contains various artifacts ranging in the 5kc to 14kc range (not a range of interest to those involved in ham communications), while passing the low frequency stuff. If you do not buy the DSP board upgrade, but add ONLY the LPF board on your own, you will cut-off the higher frequency artifacts (if any). If this is the noise some commented on, this may help reduce or eliminate that. If you want to extend the low frequency (bass) elements, you need to modify the components on the DSP board. You can either DIY via W9AC or buy it from Elecraft. As a bonus, if you buy the DSP BOARD UPGRADE (swap) from Elecraft, you get both = LPF add on board to kill the high freq junk AND the extended low freq response due to modified component values on the DSP board. If you are like me (and many others), you don't hear the high freq junk (hence, no need for the LPF) and you are already quite happy with the low freq response (how low a note do you want to hear?), and THEREFORE, won't buy the upgrade (either the entire board which includes the LPF board, or just the LPF) and won't implement the W9AC component mods either. Clearly, not everybody is like me. I have to admit, this was a very tortuous email route to a fairly simple conclusion. The emails and announcements along the way were all very choppy and unless you already understood what was happening (imho), it did indeed seem confusing and perhaps even conspiratory. Of course, having dealt with the Aptos guys and their emails for years, I knew it could not be the latter. ;-) MY SUGGESTION TO ELECRAFT: Besides offering the completed DSP upgrade, for those who are capable, also offer a kit which includes the replacement components for the DSP board. So the loyal owner would have three options: 1. Buy the completed updated DSP board with new component values on the board AND the LPF board (you already offer this). 2. Offer just the LPF board (you already do this) 3. Offer a kit which contains only the components to be swapped out on the ver B DSP boards (new). [Elecraft] K3: honest question re Audio Peak Filter
RE: Audio Peak Filter requests A number of folks have asked for this, including some who have not commented here. Many of these guys obviously used a audio peak filter before, found it useful, and now miss it. As before, I have no issues with any requests, as long as they are user-selectable as OPTIONS and not mandatory. But I have to ask why for this one. It has been my experience that one uses an audio peak filter when the IF filtering is inadequate...it is another layer of support (rejecting unwanted signals). But hey guys...the stock K3 goes down to a 50hz bandwidth...at IF and AF (if I understand the DSP correctly). Fifty HERTZ! I think that is a just as narrow (if not much narrower) and with as steep skirts (if not steeper) than you will ever find on the Audio Peak Filtering on any past or current radio. Not only can you narrow down the DSPs to 50hz, but you can also set the pitch to whatever you like. Doesn't that do the same thing (only better)? QUESTIONS: Are you sure that you actually need this? Have you tried the method cited above? Why/how would an audio peak filter be better or a further enhancement? Thanks and Happy New Year! de Doug KR2Q PS...recently I posed another such comment on a different topic and I got some very good answers which taught me at least one new trick...so this is definitely not a sarcastic question. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3: LPF, bass audio, new DSP board: Stirring the pot?
I have to admit, I just have not experienced any of these issues with either of my K3s. Yes, I am mostly a CW guy and yes, I use headphones. So...lacking any real test equipment (I assume that if the test equipment between my ears can't discern it, then who cares what a meter or scope shows me). Crude, I know, but this worked well for me one summer, in 1974 when I worked for Signal/One. They had all the test gear and engineers (this was when they moved to NJ), but nobody there could figure out/understand what was wrong with the radios returned for repair. All I needed was a couple minute with the radios (on the air) to quickly discover what was wrong and THEN the engineers could apply a fix/repair. http://picasaweb.google.com/dougzzz/KR2Q1966ToPresent#5419152602223700290 Anyhow, someone recently made a great post (IMHO)...sorry I can't remember who it was, listing the three problems. So I decided to test the K3s using what I have here (my ears, acoustic nerves, and brain). First, I have my cw pitch set to 400hz. Using the CWT feature, I zeroed in a cw signal. Heard it FINE via the inboard speaker and equally as fine via my communication headphones (the headphones sound great on CW, but I can tell that they are getting restrictive on SSB on the top end). Then, using my RIT, I dialed in 200hz offset (making the received signal lower in pitch). Using my headphones, the signal seemed fine...perfectly readable, good tone, easy to copy. Then I pulled the headphone plug to listen via the internal speaker: NOTHING. Just some thunks - I could not copy any signal at all and I certainly could not read any CW. So I plugged the headphone back in and BINGOperfect, smooth, easy copy with a 200hz note. A real difference. I am thrilled that those who have implemented the new DSP board with LPF can now hear better, but I have to wonder how much of this has to do with trying to do too much with an internal speaker. I don't know and I am not conjecturingI'm just wondering. At least now, I do know why I have not experienced most (any?) of these audio issues. If I find a pair of quality HI-FI stereo phones around the house somewhere, maybe I'll plug those in and see if I can duplicate the noisy receiver problem, suspecting that is due to hiss as others have suggested. Right now, using communication headphones, I can not. One last thing that I do not understand...and I am hoping someone can answer me. Why would riding the RF gain or adding Attenuation in any way impact noise (assuming it is not due to intermod)? Today I tried that again and again. Adding in attenuation simply reduced the audio output (again, according to my EAR). Yes, the noise went down, but did the signal. When I upped the AF gain to compensate, well, everything sounded the same relatively speaking (signal and noise) as with no attenuation. If the noise is not due to intermod (what Elecraft calls desense) then what can cutting back on the total signal due in terms of making less noise? I am not a technical guy. I just have lots of ham radio experience. My UG degree is in Biology (BS). I did my first graduate work at U Penn School of Veterinary Medicine (VMD) and my 2nd grad degree earlier this decade in Healthcare Administration (MHA). Like I said, I'm no techie. :-) Wishing everyone a Happy New Year for 2010. de Doug KR2Q __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 needs survey: keyer speed adj
K2MK said, I would like to see the keyer speed adjustment changed so that it takes 2 encoder pulses for each WPM increase or decrease. When you are keying with your right hand and want to change your speed by 1 WPM it takes a bit of mental skill to simultaneously use your left hand to turn the knob just a tiny bit. I find myself jumping 2 or 3 WPM. Slower knob action might help. KR2Q sez: As with most other requests, I would suggest that IF this request is considered, that it be made an OPTION on the config menu. As best as I can tell, right now the rate of change is about 8 wpm per 90 degrees of rotation; that's plenty slow for me, but I won't stand in the way of progress for others...as long as it is an user selectable OPTION instead of changed to. In fact, I'd like to go the other way. Have a user selectable option to select the STEP for CW speed: 1, 2 OR 3 wpm per impulse. Maybe including a 0.5 wpm step would solve both of our requests. :-) de Doug KR2Q __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3: MV confused with VM
Try this Instead of reading, just ALWAYS press the button in the upper right-hand-most corner. Nothing to remember other than use the corner button. Of course if you want to overwrite the memory, NOTHING will happen when you use the corner button and then can say, OH, use the other one. But for 99% of the time, you want MV, so just think top right-hand corner. Soon, you won't have to think at all, you can do it by rote or feel. Works for me. mx es hny de Doug KR2Q __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 Survey :NON F/W wish list
Only one: A public link for known issues log (read only) with columns for name and description of issue, entry date, priority, begin resolution date, dated comments by the Elecraft team on progress, resolved date, and once resolved, an explanation of what was done. And maybe a method where users can vote on the priority for each issue, comment (blog?) on the issue [yeah this is great or no, you are not thinking about xyz] and then publish the tally of votes. [Elecraft] K3 DIY vs factory assembled: If I get a bad part, will I be stuck?
I have been posting a LOT of private messages since I don't think they add much (anything) to general knowledge on the reflector. But this time, I think this has some merit for those who are still thinking about a K3, factory-assembled versus DIY (kit). So the recent question raised (not by me) as I see it boils to one of concern: If I buy it assembled, it's guaranteed to work cuz it's been tested, VERSUS, what I assemble it myself and it's not up to snuff? Am I stuck? ABSOLUTELY NOT! The attitude I have noted from Elecraft is that they fully support all their radios, even when you assemble it. In the earlier days of the K3, there were not uncommon emails on the reflector about trading / swapping boards and defective parts (the rare times that they occur). These ran the full range from missing some hardware (all radios I have built or helped to build had a surplus), the infamous cracked knob (none of mine), even I got two left panels or I can't find the fiber washers. IMHO, you will NOT be hung out to dry if you assemble it yourself...you will have TONS of support if you want any and especially if you need any. The crew at supp...@elecraft.com is amazing. I even got a response (well, several) on a holiday weekend when something didn't seem quite right. Did you read that...on a HOLIDAY WEEKEND! Very cool, very comforting. [Elecraft] K3 spurious
Yes, a well known issue for a LONG time...with a SUPER EASY solution. It is indeed due to the internal speaker. A year or so ago, I got a call from a local (a couple miles away) that he had a spurious on his K3 (I helped him build it). I listened, yes it was there. When he switched from the internal speaker to headphones, it was gone. I think he ended up using an external speaker which also solved the problem (some guys like speakers!). de Doug KR2Q __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K1, K2, K3: filtering email
Hehehehe. Here is MY approach. I subscribe in digest form and DELETE every digest w/o looking at anything, as soon as it arrives. I subscribe so I can reply. Other reflectors have a set no mail option, but I didn't see that when I first subscribed here (years ago). I simply use the reflector link page http://www.elecraft.com/elist.html I look at the SUBJECT of each message and only open what seems interesting. I do this for every reflector that I am subscribed to. de Doug KR2Q __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
