Re: [Elecraft] KPA500
Joseph, There is no soldering required to assemble the KPA500. If you can use basic tools (screwdrivers, pliers, etc.), you'll have no issue assembling it. The assembly manual is also VERY well-written. Re: [Elecraft] K3 & Voice Keying From N1MM+
In this configuration, you may actually need to use the front panel mic connector. I have a similar setup to yours, except I have the K3DVR in my K3. I have my computer set up using the rear jacks, as you, for N1MM Logger+ and other digital mode software connections. But, I've always used my front mic connector with my headsets. Another option, have you tried the right size and type splitter on the rear mic jack? That might let you accomplish your goal, too. Hope this helps. 73 de, Ian, NV4C On Thu, Jun 16, 2022 at 12:25 PM Graydon Jensen wrote: > I’m hoping someone on the reflector can tell me what I’m missing. > > I want to use my K3 with N1MM+ to play voice keying and record on-the-fly. > > I have found and successfully gone through a few different articles about > doing this, only from the aspect of N1MM+ and the computer are detailed, > but not to the radio (understandably since radios can differ greatly). Thanks again for all the MH3 mic case info. I'll see what Elecraft have to say, especially as they've had a 'rash' of these problems as Don suggests. Goodness! Thanks for all the replies where you've had the same happen. It's extremely disappointing that Elecraft ended up selling an inferior product for so much money - especially if they are not going to sell spare cases. Seems this is a very common problem and not just me being clumsy. My mic will be under warranty, but I doubt Elecraft will pay the return postage from the UK, and anyway they're likely to say it's been mishandled and not covered under warranty anyway - despite this obviously being a common problem. Maybe someone from Elecraft could reply here as I've still not had a reply to my email to their spares department. Thanks for the gluing suggestions and I have tried that, but on reassembly a thought: "This really shouldn't be necessary, surely they sell spare cases." But I guess not if they just buy them from China! If this was some cheap, unbranded stuff from the Far East, fair enough, but it isn't! Come on Elecraft... [Elecraft] Feedback/Question on Friday's Zoom Call
I just finished watching the YouTube posting of Friday's K4 Zoom call. All I can say is, I can't wait to get mine! Question for Eric/the Elecraft brain trust - will we be able to use a USB WiFi adapter in one of the K4's USB ports, to provide network access? I can't get wired networking into my shack, and the thought of downloading firmware/updates to my computer, saving them to a USB drive, then downloading the new firmware/update into the K4 seems like too many opportunities to corrupt the firmware. Feedback - I'm thrilled to hear Eric expects the K4 kits to begin shipping in 3-4 months. Even if there are unforeseen delays and reality turns out to be 6-8 months, that is still sooner than I expected. Maybe I'll be able to order myself a late birthday present end of March or into April! Birthday is in late March, hint, hint! :-) Eric, thanks for the meeting. I look forward to participating in more of these, and in seeing your session at the QSO Today Virtual Ham Expo in March. 73 de, Ian, NV4C __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] Waaay OT: A new kind of QRM to be aware of ... warning issued by FCC today
If you are an ARRL member, you also received an emailed statement from them today, reiterating their position on the appropriate uses of amateur radio. It isn't surprising that those involved in the January 6 insurrection and attempted coup used radio comms of SOME kind to organize and coordinate activities. I hope none involved were hams. If any were, I hope that, at the very least, their licenses are permanently revoked. [Elecraft] KX3 separate rx/tx antenna switch
Many of us have separate receive antennas - often active loops etc. - because out transmit antenna picks up too much noise. Does Elecraft have a changeover device that switches between the two fast enough not to damage an active rx antenna? Specifically for the KX3? Could the ACC 1 or 2 be used for this? Thanks. Wayne, I completely understand the challenges with getting the kit version ready. I don't have a prepaid order and am perfectly willing to wait (although, admittedly, with baited breath :-) ) for the Elecraft team to be able to get all the pieces and parts of the kits ready to go, safely and efficiently. I am just curious about the estimated cost difference between the factory version and the kits. I want to start putting aside my pennies now, and want to have a somewhat reasonable target. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 odd behaviour
Thank you Grant. That document is very useful. Yes, I was probably inadvertently rummaging about in that area of settings. I hope I haven't inadvertently degraded sideband rejection, and as far as I can tell all seems fine. That document didn't come with the filter kit, which might have helped, although the procedure looks quite involved. Maybe Electraft have reasons for not encouraging fiddling with settings that are already correctly set up in the factory. 73, Ian, G4JQT From: Grant Youngman Sent: 08 September 2020 18:20 To: Ian Liston-Smith Cc: Elecraft Refl Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KX3 odd behaviour There is an auto-mode for opposite sideband nulling to calibrate the KXFL3. Re: [Elecraft] New KX3 reverse voltage smoke
In my haste to disconnect everything I didn't notice that the antenna was connected, and thus the chassis had a good earth. On close inspection there is a tiny burnt patch around the power supply plug and presumably that's what created the smoke. So I guess the reverse current went through the plug mountings on the board to earth and the reverse diode did its job. There doesn't seem to be any serious damage to the board at the solder point to the plug, just a black spot that joint took the full force of the shorted current! I gently reheated that spot. Just hope there's not any overheated damage to any internal tracks. Anyway, seems no obvious harm was done. This KX3 still received and transmits. I have now replaced most of the original lead with a proper, clearly coloured red/black lead. 73, Ian, G4JQT From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net on behalf of Mike Morrow Sent: 05 September 2020 16:26 To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] New KX3 reverse voltage smoke The failure reported by G4JQT and the response of KC1DNY do not reflect what should happen when reverse polarity DC is applied to the KX3 or any other Elecraft rig. All have that series blocking diode (D6/CMS04 in KX3) that should prevent any significant reverse current flow and certainly should have prevented "smoke" and "melted wire" from developing. While I enjoyed the Virtual Ham Expo, there were some aspects I thought could be improved. I sent this feedback to Eric Guth via the feedback survey I received not long after the Expo closed. * Like everyone else who has responded so far, I enjoyed Eric's demo of the K4. I am eagerly awaiting the availability of the K4 kits so I can order and build mine. I'm even getting my work area prepared already, for something I know is still probably 6-8 months out. * I really liked Wayne's presentation on the architecture of the KX3. It was really neat to have the chief designer of the product show us, component-by-component, how it was designed. * The gamification of the door prizes needs to go away. As has been said here before, and I'm sure to Eric G., ad nauseum - it penalizes those who actually want to enjoy the presentations and those who can't spend all 48 hours of the Expo going to the vendors' booths and the on-line lounge. And, it only encourages bad behavior, as the Expo organizers quickly discovered. * Users should be able to enter the presentations a few minutes early. By only allowing us to enter at the exact moment the forum started, it was possible to miss part of the presentation due to latency or other technical issues. * Since all the initial presentations were prerecorded, they should be available for viewing any time after the initial presentation is given. Nobody is good enough to be in multiple places at once, even virtually. And, some very good presentations overlapped with each other. * Check the videos for quality well before the Expo begins. I attended the Carole Perry Youth Forum, because two of the presenters belong to my radio club. Carole's intro was well worth the time, but she was so animated in her speaking style that her web cam kept trying to refocus. I was getting motion sick from it. * The vendor area should be more than just links to the vendors' web sites. If that's all you're giving me, aside from the chat, why should I bother using the vendor area? I can just go to the web sites myself. * The vendor area needs to be easier to navigate. The button to exit each booth to the "hallway" outside the booth was not prominent enough. I didn't even know it was there until the end of the day Saturday. I kept ending up back at the "front door" to the vendor arena. All this being said, I think it was a good first run for a new concept in hamfests. The presentations I did attend were informative, even if some of the videos weren't of the highest quality. This may be a good option to add to traditional hamfests, when the pandemic clears and we can go back to doing things in person. I don't see this as a replacement for traditional hamfests, but it would be nice if I could see one or two forums from Dayton, say, even if I don't have the money or time to go to Ohio for the fun and games myself. 73 de, Ian, NV4C On 8/21/20 7:47 PM, Wayne Burdick wrote: Hi all, I'd like to write up a summary of the recent [virtual] Ham Expo, especially for the benefit of those who weren't able to make it. All, I received the same email several weeks ago. I followed up by Googling the organization and checking out their web site (using a Linux system I didn't care if I had to nuke when done). Re: [Elecraft] K3S dead after attempted firmware update - Fixed
Actually, this is one of the worst ways Microsoft could handle updates. I work in information security for a hospital. I shudder to think what would happen if patching reset our life-saving critical clinical systems to all the default settings every month. Our infrastructure team would spend all their time putting out fires. While the impact for end-users isn't as life-or-death, it is still unreasonable to think that every time our systems get patched/updated, we have to reconfigure them. This is amplified by the fact that Microsoft no longer gives the home user any advance notice of when their system will be patched, nor way to disable automated patching. 73 de, Ian, NV4C On 6/7/20 4:21 PM, Bob McGraw K4TAX wrote: Since Microsoft does not know of every piece of software, on every Windows computer in the world, for simplicity, very often a Windows update will set values to DEFAULT values. To my surprise the K3S then started normally & with the new PC I was able to download a new copy of the Utility program & the latest firmware. This connected immediately to the K3S. Re: [Elecraft] k3 no control
Joe, The Prolific chip set has a long history of issues. It goes back to when the Chinese started making knock-offs of them, and pirating the drivers. You probably got a bad driver set in your download. As Don said, get rid of that cable. Get one with an FTDI chip set in it. The Elecraft KUSB cable is very high quality and very reliable. You won't regret the investment. 73 de, Ian, NV4C On Wed, May 27, 2020 at 5:46 PM Don Wilhelm wrote: > Joe, > > Does the display show MCU LD and the red TX LED blinking? > If so, you need to follow the steps to "Force a Firmware Download" > listed in the K3 Utility HELP file, or refer to the same instructions in > the manual. > > Get rid of that Prolific USB to Serial adapter and get one with the FTDI > chipset - preferably the current KUSB. > > 73, > Don W3FPR > > On 5/27/2020 5:31 PM, Joseph McIntire wrote: > > Hello, > > My name is joe. Re: [Elecraft] Availability
Tommy, Please understand something about the K4 and availability - this is a rig that was announced this time last year (at Dayton Hamvention), that was still under design and development. At that time, I believe they anticipated the ship date to be in time for the 2019 holidays. Then, the testers found some things that needed correcting, which pushed the ship date out a couple of months. Then, COVID-19 hit, we all went into shelter-in-place, Elecraft had issues getting parts, and the work slowed down. And Eric and Wayne have been up front about explaining all this to us. But, the key here is that this transceiver is ground-breaking new technology. It is a brand-new product still under development, a process that was delayed largely due to world events beyond anyone's control. There were similar delays (save for the global pandemic :-) ) and similar complaints when the KX3 was released several years ago. A new product will not always meet the time lines the developers initially anticipate and announce. But, Eric and Wayne have said repeatedly in this forum, and in the newsletter, that they have product in their other lines available to ship. If you are concerned about your order, please email sa...@elecraft.com. The wonderful sales team will tell you what's in stock and what isn't. While I haven't ordered anything during the current pandemic, I have never had a problem with product I ordered being out of stock or back-ordered. But, the long and the short here is that I wouldn't be concerned about product availability. Pay attention to the K4 conversation, but take it with a grain of salt, especially in these unique times. As someone else posted here earlier, I'm waiting for the K4 kit to come out before I order mine (probably a K4-HD). I also know it will probably be at least another year before the kit versions become available. But, I can wait. In the meantime, I finally have some time to really get to know the KX2 I've had for nearly 18 months, and I will continue enjoying my K3-based K-Line (K3, P3, KAT500, KPA500). 73 de, Ian, NV4C On 5/16/20 6:56 AM, Tommy Judson via Elecraft wrote: Good Morning I’ve been studying how to establish a ham station and asking around what is available to do that with these days. A month or so of research brought me to Elecraft - best bang for the buck receivers. This narrowed my search down to just a couple radios. Now thank you to this forum's members I’ve decided what Elecraft has listed for sale I would like to use in a newly established ham station. I sent a wish list to Elecraft to see what is actually in stock knowing the present pandemic could cause shortages of supplies and labor because of the social distancing requirements. Now I read on this forum many questions about when customers will actually receive the radios they plunked down $4K to buy when first announced some time ago. One customer mentioned that he was in an older age bracket and wondered if he’d get his in time to use it - I’m five years older than what he said was his age. I’m wondering if I should consider another company’s products - find a company if any that might have equipment in stock. To end on a good note I need to say there has been plenty of time to leisurely accumulate parts and design and erect a by the book optimum height inverted V antenna out in my several acre front yard. All needed now is to hook a radio onto the lead running down the pole and to under a small tree that will shade me and a radio relaxed in a lawn chair. Guess where I will not develop as much anxiety as others over delayed shipment of equipment is because I did not send money with my wish list - or maybe I should to actually get my name on the list to get my choice of equipment? Any thoughts ? Re: [Elecraft] Some K4 updates from the engineering department
Wayne, Thank you for this update. I am eagerly awaiting information on the K4 kits and when they will be available (I know, not for a while yet ;-)). My only regret with my K3, s/n 261, is that I bought it, and its accompanying P3, used. Consequently, I didn't get the joy of building them myself. I built my KPA500 and KAT500. Aside from dropping the tiny fasteners into the deep pile carpet in the dining room, I loved every minute of it. I've thoroughly enjoyed my K-Line, and look forward to upgrading to the K4 (and maybe the KPA1500, if the funds hold out). 73 de, Ian, NV4C On 4/19/20 3:46 PM, Wayne Burdick wrote: Greetings from locked-down California I hope everyone, near and far, is staying safe! I thought I'd take a break from playing with the K4 and tweaking firmware to give everyone a status report from the engineering side. (Eric has been keeping everyone informed about how Elecraft has been affected by the pandemic more generally.) These musings are in no particular order. I hope they help satisfy those who recently posted with questions, info-cravings, etc. * * * Reference Oscillator The K4 includes a stable internal TXCO, standard, as well as the ability to lock to an external 10 MHz reference. We just completed a round of testing on this feature. The internal TCXO is accurate to within +/- .28 ppm with no calibration and no external reference connected. There's a menu entry for dialing this in as tight as +/- .02 PPM (+/- 1 Hz at 50 MHz). Connecting an external reference will hold it even closer, and of course keep it there over an even wider temperature range. Panadapter Controls Thanks to the efforts of our [working-at-home] software team, the panadapter controls just keep getting better. When you tap DISPLAY, you're presented with 14 easy to use display functions. But we took things a step further by allowing you to specify whether to adjust the current parameter on LCD, EXT, or both (when an external monitor is attached), and on main, sub, or both (when in dual-display mode). You can independently specify single or dual-pan for LCD and external monitor. For example, you could have dual-Pan on a large HDMI monitor, while setting the LCD to monitor just main or sub RX. Stereo Audio Receive audio provides independent left and right channels for both headphones and external speakers. When used in single-receive mode, this allows you to use simulated stereo or "pitch mapping"-- both very effective at relieving listening fatigue. I've been using this a lot in DXing and QRP work. Full stereo also comes into play in diversity mode, when listening to pileups, or just monitoring two separate bands. Even with a basic K4, the two receivers can be set to any two bands, and you can operate cross-band split. The K4D adds a second set of band-pass filters and a second A-to-D converter to greatly improve out-of-band rejection when monitoring different bands. Receive Antenna Controls We recently made some improvements in this area. In addition to main RX ant and sub RX ant selection switches, there are now separate icons showing which antennas are in use: one for main RX, one for sub RX, and one for TX antenna. Main and sub receivers default to the TX antenna, but you can select any of the antenna jacks for assignment to each receiver independently. This updates the icons accordingly. You can also assign names to antenna ports using a pop-up alphanumeric keyboard. On my K4, I have names for the three antennas connected to my KAT4 ATU, as well as "SIG GEN" for the RX ANT IN 1 jack and "LOOP" for RX ANT IN 2. RF Gain Controls The ATTN switch brings up a selection tool that allows you to turn the attenuator on/off and select attenuation from 0 to 21 dB in 3-dB steps. (As with all receive and transmit controls, these settings are stored per-band and per-receiver.) You can also dial in per-receiver RF GAIN (0 to -60 dB, with digital readout) and preamp setting (off/pre1/pre2). All gain settings are now taken into account when calculating S-meter and panadapter reference levels. Miscellaneous Controls Compared the the K3S, the K4 has numerous additional controls, resulting in a lot less use of the menu. Each receiver has a collection of per-mode settings (tap MAIN RX or SUB RX, respectively), as does the transmitter (tap the TX button). There are dedicated switches for TUNE LP (user-specified low-power TUNE setting), REM ANT (for future control of remote antenna switches, rotators, etc.), VFO B>A (in addition to the usual A>B), AUTO spot (in addition to SPOT), PF1-PF4 (plus another 14 user functions, Fn 1-14, via a touch function), and a separate audio BALance knob function, the behavior of which could be adapted to various operator needs in the future. Touch Controls We're sure you'll find, as we have, that the K4's touch screen interface is fast and convenient to use. To capitalize on this, w

Re: [Elecraft] Windows update clobbered me
Dave, A couple of quick thoughts: 1. Have you rebooted a couple of times? Despite what Microsoft may claim about reboots being (un)necessary, you should always reboot a couple of times after an update/upgrade. 2. Have you unplugged/plugged all your physical USB cables? That accomplishes a couple of things - lets Windows redetect your devices, lets drivers get reinstalled (if necessary). 3. If #2 doesn't work, try reinstalling drivers for both your physical devices and your virtual COM ports. Windows has a nasty habit of ignoring vendor-supplied drivers for its own drivers, which often don't work as well as the vendor's. Hope this helps. 73 de, Ian, NV4C On Sat, Jul 20, 2019, 10:28 AM David F. Re: [Elecraft] ALC implementation
The original concept of ALC was devised by Collins engineers as part of their development program for speech processing. Speech clipping flattens the peak amplitude, but also introduces some splatter which then has to be filtered out - but the filtering re-introduces a small amount of level variation (called 're-peaking'). Collins then added a very small amount of ALC, only 2-3dB, to keep the peak envelope power more constant. This mild ALC introduced very little additional splatter of its own, so the result was a large increase in intelligibility with very little increase in bandwidth. Where ALC got a bad name was when other manufacturers started mis-using it for other purposes - in particular for manual power control from 100W down to 1W or less. ALC was also being used to compensate for variations in TX gain between different bands. All of this required much more gain in the control loop (20-30dB) which made teh ALC much more aggressive and created major problems with transient behavior - in other words, quite serious splatter due to the ALC system itself. Then someone decided it would be a good idea to apply ALC from the power amplifier, thus wrapping an external control loop around the existing ALC loop within the transceiver, so the transient behavior became totally unpredictable. Add to this the tendency of many hams to perpetually overdrive their transmitters while *also* applying speech processing, and the result was that both ALC and speech processing got a very bad name. Enter the K3. With a little persuasion from early adopters, Elecraft returned to the original Collins concept of applying only a small amount of ALC to minimise re-peaking *without* significantly re-introducing splatter. The SDR concept allowed other means to be used to implement the non-dynamic power control functions such as manual power setting and TX gain compensation. When correctly configured according to the User Manual, the K3 family of transceivers are capable of excellent speech processing without worrying about also creating splatter. (Also note that speech processing is automatically disabled for data modes.) As far as I know, there is still no other manufacturer who is doing this. That will have a fourier transform of its own. If we think of it as a simple amplitude modulation then, as for AM signals, the spectrum of the original signal will be combined (convolved) with upper and lower sidebands representing the spectrum of the compressor. Our ears don't notice (unless we're sound guys listening to a pop song thinking "They've squashed those dynamics to death" ;-) ) but maybe a digital mode will. The transmitted signal is constrained to the IF passband so you stay within band. The compression frequencies and hopefully amplitude are both small so the artefacts it introduces into the spectrum should also be both narrow and small. - Richard __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] PX3 Anomaly?
Hi, I have recently purchased a new PX3 for use with my KX3.In CW mode in the waterfall display there appears a distinct black line 600hz to the right of the carrier, the black line is 50hz wide.Is this normal or is there a fault with the PX3 or is there something I have not done in setting upprocedures?I will be grateful for any guidance.Regards,IanG4WTF __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Alpha Antenna/KX3.
Gene, I've had a lot of fun on vacations with my KX2 and a BuddiStick by BuddiPole: http://www.buddipole.com/ The price, for the Deluxe kit, is probably comparable to what you'd pay for an AlexLoop. I just clamp mine to the arm of the chair, the table, whatever, with the included clamp, string out the included radial, and have fun. It tunes great with the combination of tapped loading coil and the built-in tuner on my KX2. I also have the tripod BuddiPole sells, but don't like it as much as the clamp. It's a very small tripod, and the way the antenna and mount plate are designed, it is very easy to get heavy to one side and tip the antenna over. Hope this helps. 73 de, Ian, NV4C On 6/4/19 11:07 AM, Gene Moore via Elecraft wrote: I have just submitted my order for my KX3. As part of the next step, I am continuing my search for an antenna. Re: [Elecraft] portable antennas and rigs going through airport security
Dave, I used to take an FT-817 and wire antenna through airport security (TSA) when I travelled for work. Never had an issue. Put it in your carry-on, and let TSA inspect it if they check your bags. You may actually want to leave the battery in, in case they ask you to turn on your rig. 73 de, Ian, NV4C On Mon, Jun 3, 2019, 8:52 PM Dave Sublette wrote: > All this talk about the AX-1 has stirred me up.
