[Elecraft] K4 recommendation - wait for HD or no?
I share a property line with another ham. Some of his low band wires are within a wavelength of my vertical. When he's transmitting, I rarely notice with K3 unless I'm really close. The IC-7300, he can wipe out my receive if we are trying to work on the same portion of the band. I have my sights set on a K4D, but wondering if I should be considering the HD version. Re: [Elecraft] KIO3B upgrade
Hey Jim, Replacing my external box (US Interface Navigator) with the KIO3B was a change I was glad to make to my K3. Audio levels are controlled two ways, 1, in the K3 menus and 2, in the computer operating system sound settings. The application may also have adjustments for the audio levels. At first, losing my knobs made it a little more difficult to set levels for different modes and applications, but once I got it set just right, I found that saving the configurations made the adjustments much more precise from and repeatable from mode to mode, etc. I really like the single USB cable between the PC & K3. 73 de Joe NE3R On Tue, Jun 1, 2021 at 7:39 AM Jim Leder wrote: > > I have an older K3 and have been using a USB Signalink for digital. Re: [Elecraft] K3 FT8 Levels Sanity Check
It has been doing well with the settings I posted. One of the schools of thought is to use the most gain in the final stage, which should be the line gain on the K3. With the KIO3B the levels on the computer, Windows volume & Pwr slider in WSJT-X should be known quantities. I suppose, OS & driver versions could also make a difference. The last thing I want is a poor quality signal on the band, It can be tough when you are operating a temporary portable setup and you don't have all your regular stuff or locals you know to get a good signal report. I just wanted to do some casual operating while I stayed with my grandmother and prepared for Thanksgiving & FT8 really fit the bill. Also doing a little PSK31 here and there, which is pretty much the same settings. In a few hours, the mode will switch to CW for the rest of the weekend. I hope 20 meters stays as open as it has been! Running QRP with an end fed half wave at rooftop height, so, less than ideal, but looking forward to getting on the air. 73 de Joe NE3R On Thu, Nov 26, 2020 at 3:20 PM Bill Frantz wrote: > Remember also, if the output level from the computer is too > high, then it may not be possible to get the 4 bars steady, 5th > flashing by adjusting the radio line in gain. [Elecraft] K3 FT8 Levels Sanity Check
It has been a while since the K3 has done anything but CW. Running a temporary station at my grandmother's for the week and thought I'd run some FT8 in the background. IIRC you want 4 bars of ALC with the 5th flashing. Here are my settings: Windows Sound Device Settings (KIO3B sound card) = 50% WSJT-X Power Slider = -22.5db (50%) Elecraft K3 Line in Gain = 40 That line in gain seems a little high, but it gives me the right ALC. 39 doesn't flash the fifth bar, and 41 will keep the 5th bar mostly solid. https://youtu.be/jxTkX31nEpY Thanks & 73 de Joseph M. Re: [Elecraft] 20m CW + KPA1500 = Comcast Disconnect
This one is going to be tough, because they aren't likely to give you the details you would need to know. Your post suggests that you have been disconnected. Get on 20 meters at legal limit all day, see if he comes back. If so, it is almost certainly their problem. If not, the problem is probably in your house somewhere. It could be their equipment (I have comcast for the Internet, but don't use their equipment, but most people do), but, you'll have a hard time making the case. Many 75 ohm wiring jobs are just done poorly but whatever cheap contractor was doing it in your neighborhood and you may need to do some work on it. If it is old, just run some good new RG6 and quality F type connectors. You could be getting into the cable through your home AC wiring too, so make sure that you've choked those power cords too. If it is still happening after all of that, look into a high pass filter, I'm not sure if those will work these days, you'll really have to get into the specs of your cable service for that. I don't run legal limit but I do run my HF antenna indoors, had some trouble with my own internet connection, but never got a visit from comcast myself, my fix was grounding the splitter where the cable came into my house, but I also ran some new RG6 from the splitter to the cable modem and replaced the cheap F connectors with good ones. 73 de Joe NE3R On Thu, Aug 6, 2020 at 5:32 PM eric norris via Elecraft < elecraft@mailman.qth.net> wrote: > Dear Gang: > While looking at Europe banging in on 20m FT8 this morning, I switched > over to CW, cruised the band, then called CQ DX for a while. [Elecraft] The ERR 12V Message Question
I'm not sure if I am experiencing the KPA3 power connector issue or not. I've gotten the ERR 12V message twice today. Re: [Elecraft] KAT3A & KIO3B Upgrade for my K3
KAT3A and KIO3B installed! Had a scare as I couldn't remove the bottom center screw on the right side panel, it started stripping. I had this issue on one of the front panel screws about a year ago when I was trying to replace my VFO B encoder. I was able to get the KAT3A installed without completely removing the right side panel. I should have spring for over night shipping, I was counting on the USPS to get it to me by Friday, but the package didn't arrive until today. Elecraft shipped it on Wednesday, but I guess since they aren't Amazon, the USPS doesn't bend over backward for them. The good news was while waiting for the K3 upgrades, I finally finished soldering the K1. That's been a 10 year odyssey, that I'll write about at a later date. I need to find the power cable I made up for it to finish testing and to get it on the air. That's what happens when you take over 10 years to build a kit. Back on the subject, ahh, it is nice to have a little less clutter on the desk. The KAT3A tunes my antenna on all bands, even 160, which was a shock! Not that I'll be doing much down there with my indoor attic antenna. I might buy one of the custom FSK interfaces, mine looks like something between a spider and a plate of spaghetti. Ray, It looks like I'll be calling the parts department for a new encoder. I swapped A & B this morning and now A works and B doesn't. I didn't remember this when I built the thing but there is a surprise waiting for you when you try to remove the front panel. The screws on the left front of the RF board are in the way. I did a quick review of the assembly manual before attempting to remove it and some how I didn't notice this. It would be really cool if there was a software way to swap the controls A & B. I'm not sure in how many cases this would ever be useful, but this is certainly one case. It has been almost 10 years since the K3 had been apart, when I built it. Re: [Elecraft] K1 Discontinued
This news is inspirational. My half built K1, SN 2350 as been with another ham since 2008. I retrieved it today. I had a problem on receive and had trouble figuring it out. It turns out that I missed D5, but checked it off. https://imgur.com/a/v9aMm I'm going to try and finish it sooner than later. Any chance that KAT1 is still available? 73 de Joseph M. [Elecraft] Dusting off the old K3 & Considering a KAT3A
Elecraft Operators, I have been off the HF airwaves for several years. Those darned antenna restrictions really take the fun out of it. But after helping staff the K2BSA operation at the Boy Scout National Jamboree this summer I've really been itching to get back on the air from home. I have to come to grips that I'll never have a nice balanced antenna and that I'm pretty much limited to random runs of wire here and there that can be well hidden. Right now I have a manual MFJ tuner, but I know that got old when changing bands or moving from the CW area to phone on 40 meters. I also have some common second story grounding issues. I'm wondering if the KAT3A would be a good investment for my K3 given my situation. 73 de Joseph M. Michael, I had a similar problem with my K1 while I was building it. It turned out to be diode D5. [Elecraft] K3: 400 hz & 50 hz
Other radios get quite a ring when using narrow filters. Why is this not as bad on the K3? With the 400 hz roofing filter and the DSP filter turned down to 50 hz, there is hardly any ring compared to other rigs I've used. [Elecraft] K3: Field Day: K3MAD
If you worked K3MAD on 40 meters, than it was a K3 on the other end. Wow this rig is great! Its biggest problem is that there were some weak stations out there that we could copy no problem, but they couldn't hear us, sort of reverse alligator syndrome! The CW decoder worked OK, fortunately, I had a good CW op with me through the night so we didn't need it, but my 10wpm copy speed just doesn't cut it on FD, so the decoder was helpful when I was on my own. It didn't take long before I didn't need it to copy K3MAD, AGN, TU, QSL, NR, SEC, and so on at 25 to 30wpm. :) 73 de Joseph Durnal NE3R ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Still having trouble. It does seem to transmit SSB - I enabled the 2 tone test and that worked when I pushed the PTT. But it doesn't seem that the mic is putting audio into the rig. I'll need to run SSB for field day, I'd also be happy with suggestions on what to do if this mic doesn't work. I have a heil pro set with an 8 pin connector, but that doesn't seem to work either. Re: [Elecraft] K3: Choosing which filters to buy
Even if you don't use CW very often, you may find the 400 hz filter useful for digital modes. You don't have to get all of the filters right away of course. [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 S/N 01121 is alive and on the air!
Elecraft K3 S/N 01121 is alive and on the air! Ordered: January 31, 2008 Received: June 19, 2008 Finished Building: June 22, 2008 wow - this thing sounds great, really really great! I'm not sure I'll want to part with it, but I'll wait for my test results (field day) to decide between the K3 & the FT-2000D. 73 de Joseph Durnal NE3R ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 Transmitter Gain Calibration Problem
I'm building the K3 and getting near the end (hopefully). When I follow the transmitter gain procedures, it displays ERR TXF over VFO B. The watt meter showed that it was putting out 5 watts, but the error message worries me. Any ideas? Re: [Elecraft] (no subject)
I do like the Yaesu FT-2000D. The big problem I have with recievers is local noise in the development. Once the power went out and I drained my deep cycle battery making CW contacts on my Ten-Tec Jupiter, it was awesome, but that doesn't happen too often. The yaesu handles that a lot better than my old ten-tec. I've enjoyed having two receivers too. I'm always listening on 10 meters now! My signal reports on the section phone net are better when I run 200 watts. I have a lot to compensate for, a 14 foot 75 meter antenna! The K3 is coming along nicely. I'm to the point where I'm calibrating he reference oscillator. 73 de Joseph Durnal NE3R On Sun, Jun 22, 2008 at 10:39 AM, Kenneth Waites <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: >> I was waiting and waiting for the K3 and ended up buying a Yaesu >> FT-2000D. > > Wee !Tempted by the painted lady! > > Ken > ___ > Elecraft mailing list > Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net > You must be a subscriber to post to the list. > Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] What to do with my K3
Suggestions are pouring in. I'm surprised nobody has offered to buy it from me right away. Most folks think I should build it and and use it for field day and once I do that, I won't want to sell it! So building has started. I can't find my dummy load, I think I lent it out but I can't remember to who. So, at some point I'll have to find one of those. I was waiting and waiting for the K3 and ended up buying a Yaesu FT-2000D. The FT-2000D is a great rig, and I like it for sure. Now my new K3 arrived, but I can't really afford to keep both. Re: [Elecraft] K3: prices - I'm adding to the noise.
My 2¢ - the cost of materials is going up and the value of the dollar is falling. You may have noticed that some other lesser expensive ham rigs have increased in price too, the Yaesu FT-857 and the Icom IC-706 are up at some stores. Re: [Elecraft] K3-Latest K3 Review on EHAM
When it comes to reviews, I tend to focus on the bad ones as the good ones could simply represent someones feeling that they spent plenty of money on something, it must be good. When it comes to ham gear, a bad review without a call sign doesn't get much weight. I suppose the reviewer in this case could have made up for it by giving the serial number of his K3, but that wasn't included either. I don't think it is a true review. Of course, my K3 has been ordered, my review will follow after I feel I know the radio, it could be a few weeks, or it could be a few months, I won't know until I know. 73 de Joseph Durnal NE3R On Sun, Feb 24, 2008 at 3:29 AM, Bob DeHaney <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > The reviewer (Solardx, no call sign) gives a very bad transmitter (SSB) > review. Re: [Elecraft] K1 - Which Bands or KX1 That's the question
I chose the K1 because I thought it would make a better every day rig than the KX1 and I wanted a rig that I would use regularly and not something that I would build, test and put in a box. There was something about the form factor that I liked, and when I read the manuals, I thought the approach to building the K1 was better for a first time builder like me. I went with the 2 band model and chose 40 & 15 meters. I figured those two bands would be fine at either end of the sun spot cycle for both US and DX contacts and it makes the portable antenna selection pretty easy as a 40 meter dipole will work for both. I also liked the antenna tuner option in the K1, there may be times where I can't get a good dipole in the air and the K1 tuner is great. A local ham made a contact with a K1 on 40 meters while tuning up the lead of his DMM. I don't have the tuner yet, it is something I plan to add, but it might be a while since I just ordered a K3 :). 73 de Joseph Durnal NE3R On Feb 19, 2008 9:52 AM, Curron HILL <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I am pondering buying or building a K1 or KX1 again. > > I am aware of the major differenece, There are a few things that lead me to > the K1: > Better filters, better autotuner and a few more watts out > The two things that lead me to the KX1 are: SWL and 80 40 30 20 meters all > in one small radio, if the K1 could do those two things it would be > perfect. > > A couple questions for the group, > 1. Thanks again Carl. You won't find much CW above 7080 these days. I haven't been on HF long enough to know what 15 meters will be like in a few years, but I expect that most activity will be between 21000 and 21080 kHz. [Elecraft] K1 - Building - VFO range
Back when I was building the filter board there were some steps required for selecting the VFO range, but it only seemed to apply to 30 metes. My kit will be for 40 & 15 meters, and I'm thinking that I won't need any more than 80 kHz so I'm thinking I will just use the 68 pF capacitor for the VFO. Is the 14 MHz just a default? I see later in the manual a place to change the band assignments - I suppose that is where I would set B2 to 15 meters. [Elecraft] K3 - Just about to order one
I think it would be nice to have a K3 by field day, so I better place my order now to have a chance. I think I already know the answer to this but if I place my order now and enter my cc information will they charge it right away or will they charge it when it ships? Also, will there be any notice prior to it shipping? Thanks & 73 de Joseph Durnal NE3R ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K1 RF Board - Resistance Checks
It is a DMM - sorry. $3 hamfest special, no brand, but it says model DM-301 on it! Thanks - you've sort of answered my question about the waiting about a second to get a reading too. 73 de Joseph Durnal NE3R On Jan 30, 2008 2:44 PM, Don Wilhelm <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Joseph, > > You said you were using a VOM to measure resistance, and that may be your > problem. Re: [Elecraft] K1 RF Board - Resistance Checks
Well that is a big help! Thanks. At least this time I know how to count the pins on an IC, when I built the Filter board, I didn't but assumed I did and was very confused. Pin 3 starts at about 20k for a second or less then jumps to well over 50k. [Elecraft] K1 RF Board - Resistance Checks
I'm working on the RF board and I've reached the first chance to do resistance checks in the manual and I have some questions and one major concern. There are a few checks that when I first touch the meter to it will flash a few ohms and within a second go to the desired value. For example (from PG 29): With the meters negitave lead on the ground near J7, P1 pin 8 reads about 150 ohms (it varies slightly from test to test) for less than a second then goes over 100k ohms U3 pin 3 shows 46 with the VOM set to 200K. I really don't know what that means, I'm thinking that is 46,000 ohms, which is less than 200k U3 pin 5 is shows 20 with the VOM set to 20K, again, I'm assuming that is 20k, which is greater than 10k Now for my major concern, U4 pin 4 reads only 0.4 ohms - I think I have a problem here, but I have no idea what it could be, the manual said it should be > 50k. The schematic seems to show it as a ground. I'm glad I started with a K1 - I don't think I was really ready for it. I can't even figure out how to read my VOM (although I'm going to go practice on some known value resistors while waiting for replies to this e-mail). Still, when I get this radio to work, I'm sure going to enjoy making QSOs. Then comes the K3 but I also hope to build a K2 down the road as well. Re: [Elecraft] K3 filter performance
I'm not sure if I would want to use such a setup for working repeaters. The FM filter is $120, you can buy a Yeasu FT-2800M for that, and many others for just a little more. Even if you wanted the FM filter for 10 meter FM anyway, and the transverter for 144 CW/SSB, it would still be a cumbersome setup for working repeaters. [Elecraft] Resumed Elecraft K1 Build
I didn't plan for over 3 months to pass between completing the filter board and starting the front panel board, what can I say, it was a busy summer. [Elecraft] K1 Filter Board Resistance Checks
I have completed soldering the components for the K1 2 band filter board, but when I performed the resistance checks, there was a problem. I guess an open is better than a short! I took the time to fix some weak looking solder points, but that didn't fix it. Does anyone on the list have any advice for troubleshooting this? So far, I've thought about trying a different meter :) and as I mentioned, fixing up some solder points that didn't look so good. Thanks everyone, I didn't get around soldering them tonight, or even removing the enamel, 10 meters was open, it hasn't been this open in a while, it was nice to work several technicians. Re: [Elecraft] K1 15 Meter Capacitors on 2-Band Filter Board
Thanks everyone. I thought it was right, but until now, the value listed in the table matched exactly what was printed on the component. It has been soldered nicely into place. I'm just about finished the filter board! I think, I sure hope I don't mess up the toroidal inductors. 73 Joe NE3R On 5/4/07, Mike Morrow <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: >...The table shows C17 & C19 as 56, but the components I >have are labeled 560J. Do I have the right capacitors There's a very good summary of capacitor marking conventions at: http://xtronics.com/kits/ccode.htm There's some interesting non-obvious conventions to this marking system. Most know that a capacitor marked ABC is equal to AB x 10^C pF. So yours are 56 x 10^0 = 56 pF. Similarly, 562 would be 56 x 10^2 = 5600 pF. So what would 569 be? Not 56 x 10^9 or 560 pF, as you might think, but actually 56 x 0.1 = 5.6 pF. When the third digit is 9 the multiplier is 0.1. When the third digit is 8, the multiplier is 0.01. You'd be surprised how few know that. The J on your caps is the code for the value tolerance in percent. All this is explained on the web site cited above. 73, Mike / KK5f (Sorry this topic isn't about the K3...not!) ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
