[Elecraft] Help with IF Noise, DSP Noise, NR settings

2019-06-13 Thread KC6CNN
Hello Everyone.
I was listening this morning to a few week signals and lots of static.
I was playing with the IF Noise Blanker and DSP Noise Blanker and NR
Settings to find what would take out the static but leave the CW tone.
I could not find a good setting.
Is there any information or help in finding a good setting for these.

Thanks in advance.
Gerald.

[Elecraft] K3 with Begali HST Key Question

2018-06-11 Thread KC6CNN
I just received my Begali HST III Key today.
I have it plugged into the paddle slot on my K3.
The single lever works great. But I cant seem to get the Cootie part to
work.
I switched the lever and it just sends the same rhythm no mater which side I
push.
Does the HST need to be in a different plug, like say the keyer plug?
Just asking before I attempt to move the desk and wade threw the wires. hihi

Thank you
Gerald Manthey

[Elecraft] K-1 For Sale

2017-08-30 Thread KC6CNN
I am selling my Elecraft K-1.
It has the 4 band board 40,30,20,15 meters in it.
It also has two 2 band boards which also cover 40, 30, 20, 15 meters.
It has the noise blanker and the automatic antenna tuner.
The K-1 also comes with the tilt stand.
This radio had had all the current modifications to bring it to date.
Serial number on this K-1 is number 14, yes within the first 20 radios made.
I am selling all of this for $500
The reason I am selling a lot of my ham gear is because I am going to be
moving to a cabin on a ranch and we only have limited room and will operate
off of solar power.
I have two other qrp radios and two 100 watt radios
Thanks
Gerald

[Elecraft] advice please

2017-06-28 Thread KC6CNN
I have been trouble shooting a problem that arose in the shack.
The problem is that while in a qso my kat500 will start rising in SWR's.
I decided to check the system out by hooking a dummy load to the coax
connector at the tower.
The K Line performs as expected. SWR are 1:1 and it sits there during key
down never changing.
So I hooked up the antenna again and tried it. After the tune the SWR is
1:1. If I sit there with it keyed for a little bit, I start seeing the swr
rise and it faults.
Something is breaking down.
I have a Ultimax End feed no tuner needed antenna. It is basically a 9:1 UN
UN connected to a 133' of wire. The shielded end is on the UN UN is
connected to a 8 foot cooper ground rod.

So my question is other than the 9:1 UN UN inside the little box breaking
down because of heat, is there any other thing I should check? I wanted to
check everything before calling UltiMax tomorrow.
I think I have ruled out coax, and station but running it in dummy load. I
can run qrp all day long on the antenna with 5 watts, even at 100 the swr's
do not start rising. But I only run my amp at about 400 watts max on power
and it starts rising with that amount of power.

Any suggestions or opinions are welcomed.
Thank you
Gerald

[Elecraft] not bashing a product just a warning to future purchasers.

2017-05-05 Thread KC6CNN
I know that Elecraft does not want people bashing other companies products
and I in no way want to bash them. I do however want to warn other kit
builder and kit lovers to please use caution when ordering any kit from
QRP-LABS. First it ships from Japan, second the products are so poorly made
that the part leads bend when holding the part up by the end of the lead.
The design was difficult and instructions are very crude.
They are Cheap in price lol but also cheap in quality .

Thanks hope this helps someone save their money.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 SVGA works, but text stops

2017-01-09 Thread KC6CNN
Okay very strange problem.
The keyboard would quit working but showed it had power to it.
Then finally the waterfall stopped.
I switched to dummy load to make sure it was not a rf problem, still did not
work.
I did a complete reset and still did not fix the problem.
I took the case off of the P3 and took the P3SVGA board off which houses the
USB.
I cleaned everything up and reseated the board and put it all back together.
Bingo. Something fixed it. It was either the cleaning up all contacts, or
seating them.
The P3 is back running like a champ.
This P3 does so much more than I knew it did.
Okay listed it here just in case someone else has these strange symptoms.
Thanks
Gerald

[Elecraft] P3 SVGA works, but text stops

2017-01-08 Thread KC6CNN
Okay today I was working with the P3 as to my earlier post hihi.
I was sending psk, rtty and cw with the keyboard connected to the P3.
All of a sudden the keyboard stops responding to any key or command.
The P3 and SVGA are still showing the bands and waterfalls and all is
functioning right except for the keyboard will not type.
I have done this before with no problems, I have not changed anything else
except adding a few more control alt t macros.

I have reloaded the latest firmware and went and checked all my settings.
I turned the P3 off and back on and it works for a couple of minutes and
then stops again.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

[Elecraft] K3 with Signalink or MRP40

2017-01-05 Thread KC6CNN
Has anyone used MRP40 with success with the K3 or with a K3 and signalink
usb?
I have tried and tried to get this to work.
It will key the signalink and will key the radio, but no output or audio is
transmitted.
Sending the audio to my speakers works, but not to the radio.
I have set jumper jp2 and jp3 to on which raises the output level of the
signalink.
I have adjusted the windows audio level and still nothing.

So any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank
Gerald - KC6CNN

[Elecraft] Is the K3 have low sensitivity on 10 M and 6 M

2016-10-12 Thread KC6CNN
I am curious why a fellow ham and I who both live within two blocks of each
other and have the same wire antenna, Except mine is a little higher. I have
the K3 and he has a Kenwood and Yaesu and he is working people on 10 meters
while I can only hear static. The same goes for 6 meters. I think I have
worked maybe two stations on 10 meters. Those were the ones I heard. It the
stock K3 sensitivity that far behind the others on 10 meters?

Thanks in advance

[Elecraft] K1 low power cabin radio

2016-08-28 Thread KC6CNN
We have a off grid cabin that has a small solar system.
When either myself or my daughter are up there, you have to go to the gate
or highest point to get cell service. So since my daughter is a ham although
she is learning code we wanted a way to communicate with each other when she
is there. Here is the K1 with fixed audio mod and a K42.
Here is the link to see it work.

[Elecraft] Decoded Text on the P3

That why if I run field day I can read the text off of my P3 two line

[Elecraft] KX3 & KX2 Decoding Wish

2016-06-03 Thread KC6CNN
I wish there was a way to connect the KX3 or KX2 to a external monitor, say a
7 inch screen or such to have the decode text from CW/PSK/RTTY show up on
the external monitor.
Its great the radios decode these, but would be awesome to be able to view
them on a bigger screen. And the older I get the more I would appreciate
that feature. lol

[Elecraft] RFI resistant Monitor

2016-04-10 Thread KC6CNN
Hello Everyone.
I am running a Samsung 21 inch monitor on my Elecraft P3 SVGA.
I just found that when the monitor is on it adds 2 bars of noise to my
meter.
It is also turning off when I operate on certain bands.
Does anyone know of a good monitor to combat RFI and Noise.
I have had some local hams tell me to cut the power cable and run it from my
Astron and take out the switching power supply that came with the Samsung
monitor.
Any suggestions and thoughts are appreciated. Oh PS I do have a bunch of
beads on the cable from P3 to monitor and on the power cable.

Thanks

[Elecraft] Macro to adjust THR

2016-03-19 Thread KC6CNN
I usually set the THR on CW decode to about 3 for reliable copy. I would like
to create macros to change it to 3 and 4 and also auto.

Can some one help me figure these out?

Oh and by the way the new P3 beta is awesome. Thanks

I use the decode as a backup to myself I guess I have not learned to have
confidence in my decode. Plus during dx or contest people fly with code, so
I need help there.

Thanks again.

[Elecraft] K3 and K3 Untility software - Terminal

2016-01-08 Thread KC6CNN
Hello all
I was curious I was listening to a cw conversation tonight and it was flying
by. The operators were sending at 28 to 32 words a minute. Very hard for a
new CW op to copy, but my K3 screen was decoding like a champ. For kicks I
started the K3 utility software and went to the terminal screen. I set it to
CW and to my surprise it was not decoding. The K3 was still decoding fine.
Only every once in a while the software was showing a character such as the
number in the call sign.
Does anyone know why the K3 would decode and the software would not?
Thanks

2015-12-11 Thread KC6CNN
Mike Flowers had sent me a link for some nickel plated brass covers with
silicone insulators. They were very inexpensive.
I ordered them from the link he sent me.
Below is the link if anyone else is interested.

[Elecraft] any ideals who might have these?

2015-12-11 Thread KC6CNN
I am looking for a cap of some sort that will screw on the microphone
connector on my K3 and my K2.
I just want some type of cap that will protect it from dust.
I saw a youtube video of a guy in the UK that had some type of a cap screwed
on his and it looked nice.
Any ideals of where they got those or who can make them?
Thanks

[Elecraft] Wanted to share a beautiful hand made key with you.

2015-12-03 Thread KC6CNN
Hello everyone on the reflector.
I have recently really started enjoying CW again.
I am relearning the code and have made some wonderful contacts.
I was lucky enough to purchase a K8RA P5 Big Dog key from Jerry before his
passed. It is 7 lbs of beautiful brass made in the USA key.
I then wanted to own a straight key. So I purchased a Begali Blade Straight
Key. When it came in I could not believe how big it was, but it was so
smooth.
I then learned of a first class key maker that made all of his straight keys
by hand in his work shop.
He makes these beautiful titanic keys and the quality is so impressive. He
also makes a Ericsson Key which is a swiss pump style key. They looked
awesome too. I spoke with this gentleman and he informed me he was going to
make a new key and I could purchase serial number 1 from him. The key he as
going to make was the Marconi PS 213 key. I agreed right off the bat to own
this key. I researched it and they looked really nice. I received my key a
day ago and all I can saw is wow. I could only stand there and be amazed
with it. First thing that grabs you is its massive size, and then its
beauty. I adjusted it to my sending style with is really no movement on the
arm and it was sweet. Super smooth and really fine adjustments.
I decided I needed to share this key with everyone on this reflector so I
took a picture of it in front of my K3.
I hope this photo shows up and I hope it does justice to how beautiful the
key is and I know it will show its massive size.
This Key was built by Mr. John Wellings from Birmingham England. He is truly
a master craftsman.

[Elecraft] Help with a K3 Macro

2015-11-07 Thread KC6CNN
I am trying to create a Macro for my K3.
It is to keep me from having to lean up and hit buttons. Man that makes me
sound so lazy.

I am trying to get the Text Dec THR screen to come up and change the value
and then go away.
I can get the screen to come up and even get it to go back to the normal
screen on the K3.
But I cant get it to change the THR value.
I am looking to have it change from 2 to 3 to 4 and 5.
Can anyone help me with this?
Here is what I have so far.
SWH40 to have the CWT held which brings up the THR screen. Then the Same
SWH40 at the end to make it go away.
Now how do I change the value?
Any help would be appreciated, and my radio desk is very wide, like 4 feet
so radio sits at the back and I sit up front so now you understand the
leaning. hihi

Thanks

[Elecraft] experience with CW and settings

2015-09-24 Thread KC6CNN
I am looking for someone with more experience than me with using the K3 on
CW.
I have my K3 set to about 75 percent RF gain, and the width set to around
300.
ATT is off and Pre is off I do not have the dual filter on, and no afx on. I
can spot and decode signals if they are strong. If they are weak then I can
only decode with my ears. The THR setting when you hold down the CWT button
is set on 3. If I set to auto is just sits there and runs jumble letters
across the vfo b screen.

Any help with good setting I can try would be appreciated.
Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] experience with CW and settings

2015-09-24 Thread KC6CNN
I found an article by Tony McClenny, N3ME that stated in part:

"CW Operation:
Wayne (N6KR) provides the following for anyone using the K3 to decode CW.
"If you're seeing E's and T's, try using a much narrower bandwidth, 50-150
Hz, and turn on the noise blanker to reduce the level of impulse noise. I
recommend using THR 2 or 3 for most signals, and THR 1 for very weak
signals. These fixed settings usually work better than AUTO.
When there is no CW signal above the required threshold, you'll see random
characters decoded"

I am trying some of the suggestions both on and off list.
I guess much depends on my area noise, antenna and there is not one size
fits all settings.
I appreciate all the help and suggestions. It gives me things to try and see
what works for me.
Now if I can get every one to zero beat me. hihi I call cq and it seems like
the guys that have to really try to go slow for me get right on zero beat.
Then there are those that I have to hit the rit button and seems like I spin
the rit knob like crazy. So I am now being cautious and trying to zero beat
each person I answer.
Thanks again everyone for all the help and suggestions.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Reports of intermit bad audio

2015-06-23 Thread KC6CNN
I keep getting private e-mail asking what were the symptoms and what fixed
the problem.
The radio was shipped back to me after a trip to the factory for an upgrade
and repair.
The radio came back and once it was hooked up, I joined a group of people
that I talk to all the time.
Everyone said that my audio did not sound right. The intermittently it would
go from just okay to terrible. I had one of the guys I talk with watch me on
his pan adaptor and it showed spikes and a very dirty signal. I contacted
Elecraft by e-mail on the weekend and first thing Monday Morning Howard from
Elecraft had called me and left message for me to return his call. I
returned his call and he walked me though all of my settings. Then after
everything checked out he said that he had see something similar to this and
explained what he thought it might be. Howard told me that if I removed the
fans and circuit breaker panel off of the back side I would be able to see
where the amp connected in. Howard e-mailed me two pictures one the correct
way and the other was one they had found the caused a similar problem. I
pulled the plate off of my radio and sure enough the amplifier was not
seated all the way down in the connector. I pushed down on the amp board and
it seated completely with the connecting board. I then loosened all the
screws on both the board and the amp and made sure they were seated and then
retightened the screws. My K3 is now functioning great. I don't know how it
came loose, but it did. It could have been loosened and moved during
shipping, I do not know. I took a picture of the connector before I secured
it, but I do not know how to post a picture of it here.
Okay hope this answers everyone's questions and hopefully if someone ever
has these symptoms and research the forum they will be helped by this too.
Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Reports of intermit bad audio

2015-06-23 Thread KC6CNN
I am happy to report that my awesome audio is back.
Thank you Howard, Wayne, and Eric for your outstanding customer service.
All is great with my K3 now.
It still amazes me and it floored a couple of other hams that were here in
my shack when Wayne returned my e-mail. They were like That is one of the
owners, I was like yeah. They could not believe that a simple guy like me
could get one of the owners to e-mail me back. I laughed and told them that
I had exchanged e-mails with both owners and had even spoken to them on the
phone.
One of the hams laughed and said yeah try that with any of the big three.
Then said he believed he was going to sell his radio and purchase a new K3.
I explained the new K3s to him and told him he would not miss the old radio.
Got off subject here sorry.
Thanks again Elecraft for the outstanding Customer Service.

[Elecraft] K3 Spot issue

2015-06-20 Thread KC6CNN
Has anyone notice any issues with the Spot button on the K3. I am running the
newest firmware and just received my radio back from Elecraft. When I am on
CW and I hear a signal close by I push the spot button and spot shows up on
the B area, but the radio does not change frequencies. It just sits there
until the spot goes away and the no changes to the frequency or does not
zero beat the received signal.
Any suggestions or thoughts?

[Elecraft] K3 Reports of intermit bad audio

2015-06-20 Thread KC6CNN
I just got my radio back from Elecraft. They changed a diode and put the new
sync board in it. It was shipped back and tonight was the first time I had a
chance to get on the air. I meet every weekend with a few guys on 80 meters.
One of the guys has a flex radio that he watches everyones audio. I started
to say hello and everyone said my audio was not good. I went in and checked
all of my settings and found that my eq setting were not the same. I changed
them and was told that I still sounded bad. The flex guy said I had real bad
spikes and raspy audio. I checked everything and all connectors and did not
find anything. I continued to talk for a while and without touching anything
except my heil button to talk all of a sudden the audio went to great audio.
Everyone was complementing me on my audio again. After about an hour my
audio went from great to bad again. Nothing had been changed. I even
switched antennas and it would go from bad to good and just switch when ever
it felt like it. I don't know what is going on. I have always had great
audio. Help please.
Thanks

[Elecraft] cw id on SSB not working now.

2014-12-22 Thread KC6CNN
I had set up my M1 to id in CW when I was rag chewing on my local freq.
I do not know what changed but I can not get it to send my call in CW while
in SSB mode anymore.

CW Weight tapped 1 and got +cw
used the K3 utility to set in my call sign under bank 1 M1.

I push the m1 button now and it switches to transmit but does not send my
call.
Does anyone know what I might not have set right.

[Elecraft] Which way to steer a new ham K2-KX3

2014-06-16 Thread KC6CNN
I have been training new hams to pass their test and get licensed.
During one of the classes we looked at my rigs K3, KX3, K2, Drake TR-4.
I was telling them how proud they would feel having built their own rigs and
that the K2 was a good radio. It is hard to push the K2 to them when the
price difference is so minimal between the K2 and the KX3. The KX3 also has
so many more features that it is hard to get them to put that a side for the
pride in making it themselves.
What would you guys suggest?
Features verses the pride in making it yourself. Price difference is
minimal.
Thanks

[Elecraft] kinda like other post K3 turns off.

2013-11-01 Thread KC6CNN
I just read a message about a K3 that had turned off and he could not get it
to turn back on.
I have kinda the same issue but different.
I have my K3 connected to a Alpha 76pa amp. I operated it for several
months, then all a sudden I would transmit and the K3 would turn off. It
would not turn back on until the power supply was turned off and then back
on. I checked the Astron 35amp power supply and it is not crow baring The
voltage remains good and the SWR are fine. I changed coax cables, and even
changed antennas. The problem still keeps happening. I changed power
supplies and it still does it. I lowered the drive power on the K3 to 10
watts and tuned the Alpha. I was able to up the drive till the power was
around 300 watts. At 300 watts the K3 turned off again. This is repeatable
and always turns off around 300 watts. I took the amp to a friend and it
performed great. I hooked my station up again and took the antenna off and
ran it into a dummy load and it performed flawlessly. I even had the dummy
load sitting on the floor between the amp and K3 and it had no issues. I
have checked and do not get shocked or bitten by anything in the shack. I
hooked it back up and it still turns off. I am thinking that I might have a
rf feed back problem, but thought that it would have shown itself when the
dummy load was sitting close to the K3 at full legal power.

Has anyone had any experiences like this or any suggestions to help me out.
Thank you
Gerald

Re: [Elecraft] kinda like other post K3 turns off.

2013-11-01 Thread KC6CNN
The two antennas are a zs6bkw and a OCF dipole. Both are up about 32 feet and
the ends are 12 foot off the ground. The coax is LMR400 and is new. The
antennas are located on the opposite side of the house from the shack. The
amp is powered by a 240 volt plug and the power supply is 110 volt.
This happens in all modes, CW, Voice, Psk31. It happens on all bands. It
only happens when the power is increased to 300 watts or higher.
My station ran great for several months 6 to 12 months. Then all of a sudden
this problem showed up.

I will start filtering everything tomorrow to see if that helps.
Thanks for the replies I will try your suggestions

2013-11-01 Thread KC6CNN
Hello Gary
Good to hear from you. Hope all is well down under.
The OCF Dipole uses a DX Engineering 4 to 1 Balun.
I had not heard that the zs6 had feedback problems. I better google it
before I buy a new one.
I have been looking for a good multi band antenna that does not require a
tuner until I can save up and get the KPA500 and KAT500.
I about come to the decision that 500 watts is all I need.

[Elecraft] Wounded Warrior - Ham Operator

2013-08-20 Thread KC6CNN
I wanted to take a minute to thank a few hams that help me assist a wounded
warrior that just became a ham operator.
I would like to thank John KF7OM for being patient while a bunch of ham
pooled their money to purchase a radio for the wounded warrior.

I would like to thank Don Wilhelm W3FPR for his help trouble shooting and
walking me through a trouble shooting of a donated kio2 kit that did not
work. Don you assistance was right on and you hit the nail on the head and
solved the problem.

I would also like to thank the fine people at Elecraft. Once Don had
isolated the problem and it was a transistor. I called Elecraft and spoke
with Howard. I explained that Don and I had been trouble shooting a KIO2 for
a Wounded Warrior new ham and needed a transistor. I gave him a part number
and Howard said I will get it sent out to you tomorrow. It arrived fast and
resolved the problem.

The radio was given to the Wounded Warrior today and he was beaming with
pride. A bunch of local hams came out and built a dipole antenna and pitched
in to get him on the air.

When he found out that John, Don, Howard from Elecraft had all help a person
they did not know it brought a tear to his eyes. For a Wounded Warrior who
also suffers from PTSD. Ham radio allows him to met new people and talk
around the world. Right now he has a Elecraft K2/10, we are all going to
work on getting him a mic and eventually up to a 100 watts. But he showed
great interest in qrp. The mic will not be used much I suspect as he has
also expressed a great interest to do CW.

So, Thanks to all of you that help in this project. It reassured me that
hams are great people and that Elecraft is the very best in customer
service. I know that most the hams down here could not believe that Elecraft
would send the part out and that it was so easy to get ahold of a
knowledgeable person from the company. I can assure you that the Wounded
Warrior will not buy any other brand of rig, except Elecraft.

Thank you all. It was very touching.

[Elecraft] Elecraft Hex Key

2013-08-17 Thread KC6CNN
I have been relearning to send CW again. I am using a Bencher/Elecraft Hex
Key Serial # E067.
It is a typical bencher key with a weight of 3 lbs 2 ounces. I guess I am
heavy handed and have been slapping that thing around the desk like a red
headed step child. lol.
I went and looked for a heavy key and about fell off the chair to find that
the Bencher Hex is now selling for $325.
Does anyone know how many of the Bencher/Elecraft keys were made?
I did find a heavy key, I ordered the K8RA Big Dog P5 key at 7 lbs. I hope
it stays put.

Any suggestions about tips to help me send lighter and or the number of
Elecraft hex keys made I would appreciated it.

Thanks

[Elecraft] K3 SSB Settings - First time for voice

2013-05-23 Thread KC6CNN
I purchased K3 Serial #6294 over a year ago. I was all into digital modes. I
still am, but have been playing with voice the last two days. Can someone
suggest good settings for me. Between Shift, Width, lo and hi cut, nb level,
nr adj, dsp. I have played with them all. Guess I am not real familiar with
voice anymore. I set the nr adj but it gets a woo woo sound. lol best way
to explain it. hihi DSP T settings don't seem to do anything. nb not much
effect. hi low cut understandable. but width I can get it all the way down
to a ringing sound. Any settings or suggestions would be appreciated.

[Elecraft] High Tech verses Classic

2013-03-30 Thread KC6CNN
I have the mini wonder, a KX3 and love this radio. I pride myself on owning a
high Tech K3 radio. Both these radio have all the bells and whistles. I have
a Classic K2 Twin set. The K2 is an outstanding radio with out all the bells
and whistles. But I find myself always going to and wanting to use the K2.
It's something about using this classic radio that thrills me more than
using the other two. The K2 is my qrp radio, but when I hook up the kpa100
and kat100 setup, I have a 100 watt radio capable of any and all
communications that I need. There is something about using the K2 radio that
gives me a thrill. Does anyone else find themselves in this same mind set?

[Elecraft] KX3 Amazed by it

2012-08-17 Thread KC6CNN
I am amazed by this little radio.
Tonight I decided to operate at the Ranch with it.
Wind Turbine and Solar power to my 900 amp hour bank of batteries.
I got here late so I put up a double bazooka antenna on twenty meters.
The antenna is only 16 feet up in an inverted vee configuration.
The KX3 at 5 watts running my signalink and HRD I made two awesome qso's.
One to bosnia, and one to hungry. on 5 watts. got good signal reports also.
When a station started transmitting next to me, I was able to narrow the
band width and he no longer
bothered my qso.
Thank you Elecraft for such a fine little radio.

[Elecraft] question for psk31 users

2012-04-30 Thread KC6CNN
I am now up and running on psk31.
I had my power set to 25watts and all is well. If I try to increase it to 30
watts, people say I have side bars. OK not sure what that is, but running 25
watts.
I see stations that say they are running 50 and even a 100 watts.
How are they able to run so much power and I get the side bar things at 30
watts.

Guess I should ask also what are sidebars. lol

Thanks

[Elecraft] what am I doing wrong?

2012-04-23 Thread KC6CNN
I have been trying to make a contact in psk31 mode for two weeks. I have not
had any luck. Settings are good on software. Signalink works had a CW
contact with it. But call CQ and answer cq's and both luck on 20 , 30, or 40
meters.
Is there anyone who experienced this and located a problem. I'm stumped.

Re: [Elecraft] what am I doing wrong?

2012-04-23 Thread KC6CNN
Ok, Let me start again, but this time from the computer.
I have a Elecraft K3 and it is hooked up to a signalink. Going to my lap top
which is running a older version of HRD. I decode PSK31 fine business. I am
putting out about 25 watts and have yet to make a contact. I did name a
contact on CW, but everything I try in PSK doesnt work.
I check out what Don had told me and I do not have anything showing on the
ALC in Data A mode.
No matter if I turn up the line in gain or the tx knob on the signalink.
My output meter shows 25 watts, but no alc. The compression is off. and I
have the center marker set for 1500 on the software.

agc is fast. atu in active, swr on 40 meters is 1.0 - 1 and am using fl1 2.8
as the transmit filter.

hope this helps explain some, so I can try to figure this out.
Thanks for all the replies and help. nice to have this reflector and a great
bunch of hams on here.

any and all ideals are greatly appreciated.

[Elecraft] Thank you Elecraft - And Dale

2012-03-13 Thread KC6CNN
I received my K3 today at 8:00am.
I took and hooked my laptop up to it and saved the new configuration file.
I thought I would try it as it came from the factory.
I was on 30 meters and heard a cw signal. I don't know much about cw,
between cw and a hole in the ground, I could tell you which one is the hole.
lol
I tuned in the cw signal and it was w5vyy calling cq. okay nervous about
never having a cw contact I started typing in my untility programs and
called him.
He responded on the first call. Wow. I had a nice qso with him and he said
my signal sounded great.
This is with the same antenna that my kenwood would not tune. The k3 tuned
it to a 1 to 1 first try.
Now I have a lot of learning and exploring to do. I just wanted to thank the
Elecraft bunch and especially Dale for helping me get my order and making
such a great product.
Got to jump off of here and get back to playing radio.
Thank you all and I am sure I will have questions that I will need help with
so thank to all on the reflector in advance.

[Elecraft] K3 Confussion - Help Please

2012-03-02 Thread KC6CNN
I called Elecraft today to get information about ordering my new K3.
I spoke with Dale, Very informative and so willing to help.
One question I asked him and he gave me the answer to was on RTTY, PDK31,
and CW I thought that I could hook up a cable between my laptop and K3 and
be able to operate those modes.
Maybe I miss understood but from what I got was that I needed that cable,
DB9 to USB or usb converter and that I needed to connect the in and out from
the back of the radio to my sound card. I checked my laptop and don't have a
sound card port on the outside of it.
I do have a 3.5 mm head phone jack and a 3.5mm mic jack on the front.
So my confussion is do I need to hook up the 3.5mm jacks or will it run with
just the one cable from laptop to radio. I hoping that, because I don't know
where to buy the other cables, and with my current conditions, I can't make
them.

Anyone know the run down on this?

Thank you in advance.

[Elecraft] Appreciate user advice.

2012-02-20 Thread KC6CNN
After finally reaching retirement and waiting for my added retirement bonus
check. I am finally going to get to order my K3. I mainly operate SSB now,
but want to do PSK31 and RTTY as well as keyboard CW. I am wondering what
filters and options most people would recommend. I am going to ask the great
people at Elecraft for their advise also, but wanted to see what guys that
have been using them would recommend. Examples would be DSP, 2nd Receiver,
etc.

I love working DX and rag chew a little. Digital is also one of my favorite
modes.
So with no money restrictions, what would you recommend I get.

Thanks in advance

[Elecraft] 20 watt tuner or 100 watt attached tuner?

2011-09-19 Thread KC6CNN
On the KX3 it has an option to have a wide 20 watt tuner in it. Great for
handheld or qrp. But lets say that I put it in the RV or Truck and run it to
the 100 watt amp with tuner attached. Does the 20 watt tuner need to be
taken out or will they work together.
Will the 100 watt tuner work with the 20 watt tuner installed?

[Elecraft] question about Elecraft receivers

2011-09-07 Thread KC6CNN
I have read several post about something burning out due to close by
lightning.
I have not heard of this many before.
My question is because of the high sensitivity of the receivers are the
elecraft's prone to this?
