[Elecraft] KAT500 Problem
My KAT500 will no longer tune in AUTO mode on 20M and does not change to prior stored settings in MAN mode. All other bands work as expected in both modes. Any suggestions on where I should look first? [Elecraft] KPA500 metering
If a KPA500 is in standby, can it be used to determine power output from another amp by feeding the signal thru the KPA? I don't currently have an external power meter I can utilize to check output of an SB200, but I also don't want to risk damaging the KPA. 73, Mike - W0AG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 PC connection problem
Bill, Looks like that may have been the problem! I deleted the Utility, unplugged the KUSB cable from the computer and power cycled. After the restart I reinstalled the utility and plugged the KUSB back in and all seems back to normal. Thanks for the suggestion! 73, Mike - W0AG On Sun, Apr 23, 2023 at 9:57 AM William Hammond wrote: > If it isn’t something easy like a bad cable..it is* always the driver for > me*. [Elecraft] KAT500 PC connection problem
It seems that my KAT500 has become stubborn in its old age and doesn’t like communicating with the PC anymore. I’ve tried the Elecraft KUSB cable as well as a direct serial port connection and neither works. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Intermittents serial disconnect problem
Thanks to Tom, Dick and all who offered suggestions, but nothing seemed to cure the problem. As a last resort I began troubleshooting the PC by disabling all startup programs and selectively disabling non-Microsoft services installed at boot time. Although time consuming to re-enable them (services) one at a time, reboot, and then test for the problem, it finally appeared that a Malwarebytes Pro service was causing the problem. An email to their support yielded a quick response with a suggested fix to do a clean uninstall, reboot, then a new install. They provided the software to make sure it was done correctly. Lo and behold the problem is now gone. I can only conclude that there must have been some corruption involved and a clean install corrected it. Thanks again to all. 73, Mike W0AG On Wed, Jun 28, 2017 at 12:09 PM, Tomwrote: > As Dick mentioned this is the most likely reason. [Elecraft] K3 - Intermittents serial disconnect problem
I've been experiencing a strange problem with my K3 and have been unsuccessful in isolating the cause. At times it just loses the serial connection to the PC and the K3 must be power cycled to restart the connection. It happens both during active contest logging as well as when sitting idle - the connection just stops. I've tried several logging applications with the same results. At first I thought it might be related to the PigKnob I have between the serial port and K3, but running the serial cable direct resulted in the same problem. I've also seen the problem using a different PC with an Elecraft serial to USB cable for the connection. Indications are that a problem might exist in the K3, but I can't envision why it would work flawlessly for some random period and then fail. Any ideas for further troubleshooting? I've entertained updating to the KIO3BUPKT KIO3B Upgrade Kit, but don't know that the extra expense would be worth a try. 73, Mike - W0AG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] Strange K3S/0 Mini Noise
Since starting to use my K3/0 I've been bugged by a "buzz" coming from the speakers that I haven't been able to identify. Turning the volume up overrides the noise, but it's still there. I've tried 3 different power supplies with no change, including the one supplied by Elecraft. Here's a recording of what I'm hearing: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/19721057/Files/Voice%20004.m4a If anyone has any insight about what to try differently, I'd certainly appreciate hearing it. 73, Mike - W0AG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] Logging with K3/0 remotely
Got the RemoteRig setup working great except for one small wrinkle - logging. I have a serial to USB cable connected from COM1 on the 1258 and settings at both control and remote set to Mode 7 - CAT to COM2. The computer recognizes the connection as COM3, but when I try to direct a logging program (tried DX4WIN and WriteLog so far) to COM3 it doesn't find the radio. The RemoteRig manual indicates that this setup will work with K3 twins, but I'm not sure that is the case with a K3/0. Anyone have this working or ideas on how to proceed? 73, Mike - W0AG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] K3 remote question
I have my remote setup tested and working OK with the RemoteRigs. The one thing I'd like to add is visibility of the P3. I have a webcam set up and operational to view the screen using TeamViewer. However, the K3 freq info doesn't get to the P3 since there is now no connection between the two. I thought I might be able to use COM1 on the RemoteRig to direct CAT info to the P3, but can't get that to work using either Mode 6 or Mode 7 on the RemoteRig. Has anyone tried this successfully or am I completely barking up the wrong tree? All you have to do is turn everything off including the computer. To turn off the the K-3 you have to remove the power connection. Next, turn on the computer. After the computer boots up, connect the power to the K-3 and turn it on. [Elecraft] K3 appears to be bricked
I was in the process of updating my K3's firmware this morning when something apparently burped leaving the K3 bricked. The radio is wired directly to a power supply which also feeds a RigRunner for other stuff. At the time I was also using a small 12V air compressor on the RigRunner. I don't think it was involved, but can't say for sure. The TX light is flashing, the display shows "MCU LD" and power button won't power it down. I've tried forcing a firmware download several times, explicitly following the instructions in the K3 manual without success. The K3 Utility program can't find the rig on the prior COM port being used, nor on any other available COM port, so I suspect that's a major clue. True COM ports are not available on the PC so I'm using a StarTech 4 port USB converter that utilizes the FTDI chips. Anyone have any ideas I can try??? Re: [Elecraft] Remote Rig logging
Many thanks to all who responded to my plea for help - what a great list! After several failed attempts at resolving the problem, I noticed that my Windows COM ports weren't enumerated with "RRC1258...) like several had suggested. The Microbit install with drivers had proceeded without issues, so I hadn't given that part of the process any further thought. BIG mistake on my part! It turned out that the driver part of the installation had failed without any notification and the drivers weren't actually installed. I located the driver installation file on the hard drive and manually updated each of the four Windoze COM ports with the RemoteRig driver for it. SUCCESS!!! Everything now seems to be communicating correctly and logging software interfaces correctly thru the control RemoteRig back to the radio. A frustrating process to say the least, but it all now works smoothly. Final test will be later this fall from a truly remote location. I'm in the process of setting up my K3/0 mini to access my remote K3 using Remote Rig 1258 MkII boxes. Everything is working correctly on my LAN and also when using a Verizon connection for the control and my LAN for the remote. My only problem is figuring out how to use a PC logging program on the control side of things. According to instructions in the RemoteRig manual: "If you want to connect a logging or PC-control software to the system you can connect it to the Control-RRC COM1 via RS-232 or USB and configure both RRC:s COM1 to “Mode-7, CAT to COM2 (local)”. I've tried that using an RS-232 to USB cable without success. Bill, Excellent analysis and I suspect you are correct in exposing my current, very limited knowledge of RTTY signals. Joe, et.al., I finally got back to the shack to check the setup. It looks like I was actually using a 1.8 kHz SSB roofing filter in conjunction with the 500 Hz dual PB DSP filter. I also checked the filter offsets which were all at 0.0 (all 8 pole) and I was using AFSK A mode. Is the effect I'm seeing due to use of the 1.8 filter or do I have more research to do? Thanks for everyone's input and patience - seems like the learning curve is getting worse with age. [Elecraft] K3 - AFSK anamoly? No replies, try again
I played a bit in the RTTY RU this weekend with my new-to-me K3 to learn the operation and iron out any kinks in my setup. Everything worked well except for a problem (?) on receive. I was able to easily tune in signals and copy using MMTTY, but when I tuned to the other side of zero beat I could easily hear the same signal. Obviously, it was inverted, but I was surprised to even hear it at all. Is this normal or do I have something setup incorrectly? Bob, Joe, Bill & Mike, Since I'm new to RTTY, I probably didn't describe my question in correct terminology - I mainly only operate CW. I'll try again I'm using DATA A/AFSK A, setup for low tones (915/170) and the RTTY dual-PB filter. To illustrate what I'm hearing/seeing, imagine tuning down from 14.090 until you hear and can decode an RTTY signal. Then continue tuning down 915 Hz (to what I probably erroneously referred to as zero beat) and then down another 915 Hz, I can now hear the same signal but inverted (slightly weaker, but definitely there). It is not decodeable, but it is definitely there. I assumed (yeah, I know) that the opposite sideband should be suppresed, but I think that's what I'm hearing. Any advice will be appreciated. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Remote
Hi Steve, I also saw that at Dayton, but that also requires a computer at the remote location, which I would like to avoid. What I am looking for is a KX3 controlling a KX3 directly (perhaps using RemoteRig) like the manual proposes. A computer would work, but presents another raft of issues that I wold rather not deal with. 73, Mike W0AG On May 18, 2015 8:20 PM, Steve lawr...@woh.rr.com wrote: Mike, Fresh in my mind from Hamvention, I believe Pignology has the technology available today: http://pignology.net/pigremote/ Steve aa8af On May 18, 2015, at 9:08 PM, Mike Murray w0agm...@gmail.com wrote: Was just browsing thru the KX3 manual and happened upon a section that says a KX3 can (maybe, someday?) be used to control a remote KX3 via the internet. Re: [Elecraft] K2 - 20M dead
Don, Thanks for the quick reply and troubleshooting suggestions! I do have the KPA100 and KAT100 installed so here's what I did: 1. Rechecked 17, 20 and 30M and only 20 was still dead on transmit. 2. Opened the K2 up, checked VFO freq and it was OK (4915). Receive also OK on 20. 3. Removed KPA100 and KAT100. Transmit now OK on 20, so the problem must be elsewhere. 4. Installed KPA100 and transmit still OK on 20. Aha! Problem must be in the KAT100 somehow. 5. Reattached KAT100 and tested again. 20M now transmitting OK! At this point I'm starting to question my sanity. All bands modes are back to normal, although I'm not convinced the problem won't reoccur. I guess I'll just have to wait and see if it happens again and restart the troubleshooting. Thanks again for your help. Mike - W0AG On Mon, Sep 30, 2013 at 8:15 AM, Don Wilhelm w3...@embarqmail.com wrote: Mike, It is highly unusual to have a transmit problem on 20 and still have transmit on 30 meters - those two bands share both the bandpass filter and the low pass filter. The fact that you have HiCur messages should point the finger at the Low Pass Filter. Are you certain it is receiving signals that are really on 20 meters? You might want to check the VFO frequency first - it should be 4913 kHz higher than the frequency shown on the K2 dial. You can use the internal counter probe in TP1 and CAL FCTR. If this is a K2/100, remove the KPA100 and test the base K2 working into a dummy load. You may have to do Transmit Signal Tracing as indicated in Appendix A of the K2 manual to find where the failure point really is. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/29/2013 9:46 PM, Mike Murray wrote: I thought I'd give a RTTY contest a try this weekend so I dove in. Re: [Elecraft] Will the K2 and KX3 work with the P3?
Robin, I have the NB installed in my K2 and I elected to use that option to install the IF buffer. The other option may offer slight improvement in performance, but I didn't feel it was worthwhile in my case. I haven't been using it long enough to give you any real feedback. Like you, I plan to use it primarily for CW and only occasionally for SSB. I hope to get on the CW test this weekend and see how it performs. From what I've seen so far, it does make it quite easy to spot openings as well as strong signals up and down the band. 73, Mike - W0AG On Fri, Aug 30, 2013 at 1:30 PM, Robin Bayer rmbaye...@gmail.com wrote: Hello Sir I was wondering where best to connect to the IF. Mike - W0AG wb4...@knology.net wrote: Wouldn't a Softrock Ensemble II receiver for less than $80, feeding a soundcard, and some free SDR software, be a much cheaper but effective answer? The K2 appears to have a 4.9152MHz IF, so using an Ensemble II, with it's Si570 tuned to 4.9152MHz, should work fine. Then, you feed the Ensemble II I/Q outputs to either an internal sound card if stereo, or inexpensive USB sound card (like an iMic?) if not. Rocky, PowerSDR-IF, SDR#, or other SDR software will provide the spectrum display. If an iPad or iPhone, use iSDR. I'm not sure if Tony Parks has a rock-bound Softrock that is close enough to the 4.9MHz IF of the K2. If so, that's an even cheaper answer. I would definitely put a buffer stage like the Clifton Labs mentioned earlier, in the rig. Not only does it buffer the IF output of the K2, it also prevents interference getting back into the K2 from the Ensemble or Flex 1500 LO. QSD-based receivers are known for generating RF signals on the carrier frequency BACK OUT the antenna port. Seems like using a Flex 1500 just to provide a QSD-based demod/display is a little like towing a Hummer behind your Suburban in case the Suburban breaks down. And if you ever accidentally transmit on the Flex 1500 back into the K2 - uh-oh. Having a spare rig could be handy though. 73, Terry, WB4JFI -Original Message- From: Michael Babineau Sent: Thursday, August 29, 2013 10:22 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Will the K2 and KX3 work with the P3? Bruce et al : Using N4PYs RCP (or maybe even DDUTIL) it is possible to slave a Flex-1500 off of a K2, or other radio, to use it as a Pan Adaptor. So for about the price of just a Pan Adaptor (P3 or LP-Pan) you can actually get a Pan Adaptor (Flex-1500) that can also be used as a transceiver. I guess that it depends on what you are looking for, but if you can live without the K2s full break-in on CW, the Flex-1500 just by itself makes a pretty formidable little radio. The point I was trying to make is that given the base price of the K2, how many people are going to want to almost double the price by adding a P3 as Pan-Adaptor? I guess that it depends on how tricked-out your K2 is. If you already have DSP, KPA100 then maybe it makes some sense. I am not saying it is wrong to do so, it is just that there a lots of other Pan Adaptor options, some lower cost and others similar cost but offering more flexibility. It really comes down to wants, needs and the users budget. Personally I looked at this option myself (I love my K2) and decided that the P3 or LP-Pan options didn't compute dollar-wise for me and if I really wanted SDR, buying a Flex-1500 to go along with my K2 works out better for me. (Selling my K2 isn't an option). So my comment regarding the original post is, before adding support for the K2/P3 to an existing control program, the author (Tom VA2FSQ) might want to assess whether this is something that users are really going to want to do frequently enough to justify the time and effort for the new software development. Given that the WIN4K3 software is targeted specifically at Elecraft products, then maybe the answer is that the K2/P3 combination should be supported anyway, just for WIN4K3 product completeness. It is possible to make a P3 work with a K2. Cheers Michael VE3WMB From: Bruce
Re: [Elecraft] Will the K2 and KX3 work with the P3?
Robin, If you do decide to go the SoftRock/Clifton Labs route, be advised that both are kits containing SMD parts. Not a major obstacle, but you'll definitely need a good soldering iron with small tip and probably magnifying lenses to help locate and solder the little buggars! In addition, the 4.915 crystal for the SoftRock is also an SMD and you'll need to fabricate a mounting platform for it. Again, not a major problem - I used a small piece of circuit board and made 4 small pads with a Dremel. For software you might want to try Rocky first and then PowerSDR-IF. I currently am having the best luck with Rocky since it's pretty straight forward to get operational. PowerSDR might be better, but I've not quite mastered its setup as yet. 73, Mike - W0AG On Thu, Aug 29, 2013 at 5:02 PM, Robin Bayer rmbaye...@gmail.com wrote: Hello Sir I am looking for a description of what is required and what I can expect Fromm the Clifton labs IF buffer/amp/filter installation, assembly, and operations. Tony does have a crystal available for the SoftRock Lite II kit so that it works at 4.9152. For about $75 you can have a decent, but not great, panadapter for a K2. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Problem - I let some smoke out
Yep, that was the problem! In my haste to test the K2 after repairs, I disconnected all optional stuff, including the RX antenna. Naturally I forgot all about that after a couple of days (CRS?) and thustly ceated my own problem. Thanks for the quick response and for all of the help you provide! [Elecraft] KAT100 question/problem
Mel, KJ9C, sent the following question regarding his KAT100: Tuner works OK on all bands and antennas EXCEPT: The quad on ONLY 15 meters CW band, which is already 1.0 - 1 without a tuner the tuner settles for 1.7 - 1 and won't retune any lower. If I go up to phone band, where ant SWR is about 2-1, it retunes to 1.1-1 buffaloed. It puts out full power, but not sure why. I troubleshot it according to the ATU manual, tried low power, looked for stray RF, put a choke on coax, tried ANT 2 slot instead Has anyone else seen this behavior or have any ideas for a remedy? Please respond directly to: kj9c(at)iquest.net since he doesn't currently monitor the reflector. [Elecraft] W3FPR's Fixed AF Output Kit Mounting
I just received Don's Fixed AF kit and would like to commend him for his work in getting it designed and put together in kit form. It performs as expected and will be very useful. In trying to mount the completed board in my K2-100, I encountered a problem that others might run into, depending on the serial number and/or shield mod that is installed. If you have the mod (or newer K2) that includes a shield for the speaker, the recommended mounting position on the left side panel will probably not work due to the decreased clearance. I tried everywhere along the side panel in all rotations, but could not find a spot that gave enough clearance. The speaker shield is just a bit too big. It also projects down far enough to preclude mounting horizontally on the RF board in that general area. I would up mounting it on top of U1, the I/O controller, in a horizontal position by exposing only a small section of the adhesive backing strip. Don't know if that will create any problems, but seems to be OK so far. 73, Mike - W0AG ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
