Re: [Elecraft] ] Elecraft] KPA500 to K3 control cable

2012-10-07 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM
And yet anonther trick that works:

If the AUX cable is too short for you, you may EXTEND it using a normal, 15
pin straight-through cable (provided no wires are connected together or to
ground). This can do no harm since the required interrupts are in the AUX
cable. But ONLY as an extension, of course, not alone!!!

Steve Kercel wrote
 Another trick that works:

If you're using a K3 and KPA500, there are only 9 lines needed, and two
of those are grounds. A CAT5 cable has 8 lines. If you use one line for
ground and connect it to both ground pins at each end, you have the
necessary 7 lines left. I used this scheme to build a 15 foot jumper. It
works perfectly. I discussed this with Eric before I tried it.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Problem

2012-09-23 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM
That's right, Fred and Mike - This is exactly what I have been mentioning
ever since I got my KPA500 a year ago. It only occurs when BND CHG is set to
STBY, which I think is safer. Elecraft was able to reproduce it and said it
would be corrected in a future release. The bug is supposed to be on the K3
side.
IMHO, this is important to all, rather than AM (seldom used) and ESSB (I'd
never do that!)

Mine has the same issue where I need to periodically reset the K3 PWR back
up to 100W when operating the KPA500 in STBY. So far the K3 remembers to
go to the preset PWR output levels when the KPA500 is in OPER.
Elecraft is supposed to address this issue in a future firmware release.

I have NEVER used ALC with any PA. BTW, most ACOM amps for instance do not

It's so easy to reduce input power... And my K3/KPA500 combo does it
automatically.

That's right, Bob, I switch the K3 off, then wait until the KPA500's fan is

Makes me save up to 5 cents a day (we seem to have higher rates here).
Which means I very seldom use the switch on the rear panel, except when

[Elecraft] Transferring Configuration to another K3

2012-08-13 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM
Trying to transfer my configuration to my second K3, K3 Utility taught me
this was not possible because serial numbers were not consistent... After
four years using the K3, I still have a lot to learn :-)

So I copied all the menus and Configs one by one, this took nearly an hour
but my two K3's now have identical settings.

I wonder whether anyone has found a way to cheat on the Utility to make it
believe it's the same transceiver? Or what is the reason why this apparently
is not allowed?

I'm just curious...

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 update

2011-12-08 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM
Well, I must admit I'm a little bit disappointed... It was said some time in
August, the KAT500 would have a built-in balun on the *input* side. And one
of two outputs switchable between balanced and unbalanced. Now we'll had to
add a balun at the output, which arguably is suboptimal.
On the other hand, I wonder why Elecraft should go into the trouble and
expense of developing a high-power balun. AFIK, there are some good products
already available...

I second Martin's (LA8OKA) suggestion for a relay-switched configuration.

Maybe they'll think it over - or even offer two different versions (just
dreaming...)

[Elecraft] Firmware Releases

2011-11-30 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM
I enjoy my K3 and KPA500 very much. But I notice there has been no new
firmware releases for a fairly long time. IMHO this could mean:
1. Both the K3 and the KPA500 are so close to perfection that they are not
easy to improve on (I tend to believe this...)
2. Wayne, Eric, Lyle et al are so busy with the KAT500 and the KX3 FW they
don't have time for anything else (which I can understand, too!).
I must say that some of the suggested features on the Reflector are rather
marginal - or already implemented - not willing to offend anyone of course
but sometimes, a spot of manual reading would solve a few issues.
K3 FW 4.42 has been a Beta for over three months, which is rather unusual...
Nevertheless, I'm happy with FW 4.39, not needing 4.42 anyway as I don't
have the K3EXREF (I think the K3 is more than accurate and stable enough!)
Just my two cents...

[Elecraft] KPA500 question (actually re KAT500...)

2011-11-14 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM
Thanks for the news about the KAT500. But it says in the KPA500 Owner's
Manual (yes, I do read manuals!):

IMPORTANT: Provide at least 2 inches (5 cm) clearance behind the fan and
above the amplifier for proper air flow.

This may hold true – to a lesser extent – for the K3...

How come the KAT500 is supposed to be put on top of them?

Re: [Elecraft] One minor issue with the KPA500

2011-09-25 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM
On July 1, I wrote:

does go into STBY when changing bands but the K3 keeps the lower power

This was supposed to be a timing problem to be resolved with the next FW
release but FW 1.11 didn't solve it. Any one else noticed this?
Not a big issue but I'd like to go for BAND CHG = STBY...
Anyway, the KPA500 is joy to use.

2011-09-19 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM
I ordered several K3's and KPA500's for fellow hams in HB9 and self.
Latest KPA500 was sent from Aptos Monday p.m. (i.e. Tuesday a.m. our time)
and arrived this morning - .
that's five days, weekend included! Usually, il takes 6-7 days but never
longer.
Looks like we're lucky here in Switzerland - which is good since UPS in this
country is a catastrophe.
Thanks Elecraft, thanks US Mail, thanks Swiss Post, goodbye UPS!

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 on RTTY

2011-09-11 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM
Yes, Bob, the fan will accelerate during an RTTY contest (or during long
transmissions in CW/SSB for that matter...) - this is normal.
If you set fan speed to 1 or 2 to start with (instead of NOR), you will
notice temperature rise will be substantially reduced - and much slower.
Good thing for the final transistors! This, by the way, was also recommended
by Eric at Elecraft some time ago.

[Elecraft] KPA500

2011-09-08 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM
Two fellow hams and myself have found our KPA500's current draw to be just
below 12 A at 58 V (i.e. less than 700 W) when putting out 500 W (as
measured on a Bird and other Wattmeters).
That would be the equivalent of 72% effectiveness... Amazing, to say the
least!
I wonder how accurate the KPA500's Ammeter is. Anyone else tapped HV and
Current at 500W output?
Please respond off list (call sign below) (at) uska.ch.
I don't intend to launch a thread on this topic.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 fault

2011-08-27 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM
Hi Len

My KPA500 is normally set to PWR ON = STBY, which is the factory default
setting.
But after setting it to OPER for a test, I noticed the same thing.
I suspect this is a timing issue, just like leaving the K3 at low power on
band change if BAND CHG is set to STBY.
The next FW release is supposed to solve the problem. Some hams (field
testers?) seem to have FW 1.11 (which is not even Beta yet) but most still
use 1.02.

Let's wait and see...

Re: [Elecraft] VGA Cables

2011-08-10 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM
It is clearly stated in the manual (as mentioned several times on the
Reflector) that commercial VGA cables are NOT suitable for use with the
KPA500 as some wires are grounded and/or connected together.
The KPA500 will work with ANY radio providing PTT to ground. No cable
required, except PTT!

I do have the special cable between the K3 and the KPA500 but I also tried
removing it and connecting the PTT cable only. Since the frequency sensor in
the KPA500 supersedes any other band switching means (RTM!), there is no
need, really, for a special cable when using non-Elecraft rigs. And the
sensor does work, instantly and with only a fraction of a watt drive - even
with the KPA500 in standby!

I've just ordered another KPA500 for a friend (an Icom user), that's why I
tried this out.
So if you have anything else than a K3, don't worry, go PTT. The sensor will
take care of the band switching just in case you forget.

73 and have fun with the KPA500

Re: [Elecraft] VGA Cables

2011-08-10 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM
Yes, of course there are several advantages to using the AUX cable and I also
got to the habit of changing bands with the KPA500 buttons (whether in
operate or standby condition) - and with the Y cable, the K3 still controls
the antenna relays through the BCD-10 band decoder without a problem.
Everything is done at the push of a single button and you are ready to go...
Very convenient indeed. Especially when chasing ST0R on different bands!
If you have a K3, IMHO the AUX cable is a must!

Dick Dievendorff wrote:

[Elecraft] KPA500 - Fan Suggestion

2011-07-05 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM
If set to NOR, the KPA500 fan will switch to speed 1 at 50C, speed 2 at 55C
etc.
If set to speed 1 manually, temperature rise will be slower and it will take
longer to reach 55C or even 60C.
Then it cools down more quickly. Maybe not a bad idea to leave it at speed 1
all the time, the noise is hardly noticeable (my laptop fan is louder!).
Especially if you are an RTTY contester! It will switch to the higher speeds
automatically when required.

[Elecraft] KPA500 Utility

2011-05-13 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM
The FW page for KPA Utility (Windows Version 1.4.5.4) May 4, 2011 reads:

Download and run the file from the above link.
Use this utility to check for the latest releases of new features for
your K3.
Requires either a RS-232 cable or KUSB Serial-USB Cable to download from
your PC to the K3.

To the K3??? Or to the KPA500?
Is this a typo?

It's a bit early (still waiting for my KPA500 and it will have the initial
FW anyway) but I'm curious!

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 AUX input

Hi Guy and Ralph

Yesterday, I sent an e-mail to Gary at Elecraft support with that very same

I am using a Unified Microsystems BCD-10 band decoder which has
opto-isolated inputs so it should not be a problem. I don't know W9XT's Top
Ten configuration though...
Let's see what Gary says – will forward his answer to you.
My K3 S/N 586 has the new KIO3 with the pull-up resistors and it works
flawlessly with the decoder.

The question, should anyone venture an educated guess:
Can I drive the KPA500's AUX input in parallel with my existing decoder
using a Y cord, or should I isolate the K3 from both the KPA500 and W9XT
 with diodes?

Re: [Elecraft] re KPA 500 and ATU

2011-04-08 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM
Come on, putting a 500 W PA into such a small enclosure is already an
incredible achievement in itself (congrats, Elecrafters!) and a matching ATU
cannot be built with miniature, surface-mounted type components, can it?
Let's stay realistic. If Elecraft is really going to offer the ATU in a
P3-sized case, that will be yet another first in the industry. I'm looking
forward to building and enjoying my KPA500, not trying to further improve it
before it's there!

But the REC button has one: hold it to get into BANK 1, again for BANK 2.
Then tap it to return to the normal M1-M4...

[Elecraft] [K3]: APF or Dual PB? You can have both!

2010-12-29 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM

Like some others have reported, I often tapped the DUAL PB button instead of
holding it, thereby selecting the SSB filter instead of engaging the APF...

To avoid this, I chose to assign the APF to setup II of the HICUT/WIDTH
button, so an unintentional tap would only switch between HICUT and
WIDTH... which is not so annoying.

Then changing CONFIG:DUAL PB to NOR again, setup II kept the APF and now,
switching between I and II, I can choose between APF and DUAL PB without
going through the CONFIG procedure. I find this very convenient indeed.

[Elecraft] Using the P3 with the SteppIR in tracking mode

2010-12-09 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM

I'm currently using the serial port on the K3 for the SteppIR Yagi to track

tracking mode? Maybe using a Y-cable?

Thanks for any hint

Re: [Elecraft] K3: USB port - and SteppIR antennas

2010-11-19 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM

Who really needs a USB port on the K3? The converter works perfectly well...
Yes, it may be possible to replace the K3IO board with one having a USB
port. BUT: What are those of us using SteppIR antennas which track the K3's
VFO supposed to do?
The SteppIR requires an RS232.
Or shall we ask SteppIR to implement a USB port in their control unit as
well?
Would that be worth it?
IMHO, it wouldn't.
I'm quite happy with the serial port and converter.

Re: [Elecraft] Firmware 4.18 APF adjustment using shift control

2010-11-06 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM

A fellow Swiss ham and I apparently were among the lucky few not to
experience any SSB power issue with Release 4.17/2.65. I wonder whether this
has anything to do with some interaction with filters or other settings.

But now after installing 4.18/2.67, I noticed that turning the shift to
exactly 1 kHz will mute both receivers and only impulses from the encoder
are heard (fairly loud!) until shift is returned CCW to below 300 Hz.

Not a big issue since only slight moves around my 700 Hz sidetone are
normally required.
Just wanted to point out that the loss of SSB power does not seem to occur
on every K3.

Re: [Elecraft] APF in 4.16/2.63 works well!

2010-10-30 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM

After extensive tests with the new APF feature, I can say the results in
digging out weak CW signals are impressive. I was so enthusiastic that I
forgot about the SSB contest this weekend and concentrated on CW! The fact
that it is independent for the main and sub receivers is a very useful
feature - when working split, I like to search the pileup in a rather
broad-banded way… whilst the DX is being enhanced.
I agree that a variable Q would be nice to have but the APF is already
very good as is.
Just as impressive is the way Elecraft responded so quickly and efficiently
to this suggested feature!
Thank you again, Wayne and all Elecrafters.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Power supply

2010-08-11 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM

That's right, Ron. But I like 13.8 VDC rigs, mainly for portabilty
reasons...
My FT-1000MP (though a wonderful rig) was a chore to switch over 230
VAC/13.8 VDC.
But many modern rigs also have (built-in) PSUs for specific voltages:
FT-1000 MkV
and even the new FT-5000. But for 200 W? Just 3 dB more - hardly noticeable.
I run my K3 on a little PSU and on a 12V lead-gel battery when operating
portable.
Nice!

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Power supply

2010-08-10 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM

Now, why should Elecraft build power supplies?
Let them stick to what we know their good at: making transceivers and
ancillaries, kits, ...
There is a plethora of good, clean PSUs on the market.
Just for info: I have two, rated at 28 A peak, from a German provider but
they look as if they were from Jetstream! No problem, no noise, working
flawlessly for two years.
Purchased at Friedrichshafen Ham Fair for about $ 90 each - so what are we
talking about?
Our friends at Aptos are busy working on the P3, KPA500, ATU...
Why should they go into the trouble of developing yet another PSU when there
are so many to choose from? - just for the fun of having a matching box next
to the K3/P3?
Elecraft is unique - the K3 is unique - anyone can build decent PSUs.

Just my two Eurocents!

Re: [Elecraft] KPA 500 - and 50 Hz in Europe?

2010-08-01 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM

Hi Wayne and thanks for the info re KPA500 power supply

The toroid transformer in the KPA 500 takes up most of the space available
in the K3-sized cabinet and it is amazing that the developers managed to add
a linear regulator and even a 500W amp etc. – hi!
Now toroids are a bit hard on the inrush current and I guess some
soft-start device has been provided for.
But my main concern is this: Is the toroid rated in such a way that no
saturation/overheating will occur with the European mains frequency of 50Hz?

amp. See for instance:

(inspite of the title of the article, problems can even occur with a very

or google swamped input+filter for further info.

Unnecessary here since we are only allowed to use 100 W on 6 m anyway!
But if you can find one for that range, even - like mine - with reduced

2010-03-05 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM

Lucien,

You won't get a chirping K3!
I had the same problem with S/N 586 and mailed Gary at Elecraft who
immediately sent me an FPF file and instructions about the 56 ohm resistor
etc. Problem solved!
As usual, Elecraft was quick to address the issue recently discovered.
No doubt new K3's will have all the changes so go ahead!

Re: [Elecraft] Hexkey OT

2010-01-30 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM

Hi Gary

Welcome back to CW!
I know you'd prefer a direct answer but I couldn't find your email address -
not even on QRZ.COM - and I think this may be of interest to others, too.
I have been using the Elecraft Hexkey for nearly two years (with my K3) and
it's my favourite, although I've had several others including Bencher's
(note that the Hexkey is a Bencher, too). Once properly adjusted, it lets my
CW flow easily. YMMV, as they say...

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Amplifier suggestions?

2010-01-19 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM

A quote from Rod on Vinantenna's (vinecom.co.uk) Website:

Q2. Is Svetlana still making these tubes?

A2. Yes, production has started again, but prices are going to be
significantly more than for NOS tubes.
(NOS = New Old Stock)

I have an ACOM1000 with my K3 but after having read that, I'm not worried. I
have had an FT2277 for over 20 years and the same old 572's are still being
used by a fellow ham...

W0FK wrote:

I haven't operated an Acom, but note that it uses 4cx800's (as do a few

 its 8400 from 4cx800's to a 4cx1000's (new model is an 8410).

Re: [Elecraft] [MM] W2 Wattmeter

2010-01-04 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM

The W2 does exactly what it is supposed to do. And it does it pretty well.
Assembly went smoothly. The problem IMHO is that it was developed by people
who know a thing or two about power measurement, accuracy, resolution,
precision and the like. For people who may not always be familiar with such
matters... or are just accustomed to needle meters.
With the W2 Utility and/or the W2 PC program, it is quite easy (and for some
people maybe comforting) to adjust the W2 to match the 5+% error of your
BIRD which is by no means supposed to be a standard (even if recently
calibrated), hi...

accuracy on E-Ham. I wonder if anyone would care to refute the E-HAM
reviews or offer positive comments about the W2's accuracy. At this point
I would have to choose the AUTEK or OAK HILLS meters over the W2.
Considering the cost of the W2 and Elecraft's attention to quality I would
expect a far more accurate meter than the reviews would indicate. Many
 thanks.

[Elecraft] K3 Feature requests etc.

2009-12-31 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM

I think Wayne must have a rather long wish list by now, full of very
different feature requests with very different priorities... IMHO, the K3
already has virtually everything a serious DXer needs. I understand the
unique possibility of exchanging ideas not only with other users but even
with the developers with direct response from the company owners may lead to
some - sometimes exotic - new ideas but don't forget the K3 is still getting
better. The only thing the K3 does NOT have is perhaps a sunspot
generator... ;-) But this request will probably end up very low on Wayne's
list, hi!

Wishing all at Aptos and all Elecrafters worldwide a happy and successful
New Year!

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Noisy K3 receiver

2009-12-19 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM

I'll second that, Ian! I'm lucky to live in quite, rural QTH with no
computers around except my own...
So the K3's inherent white/pink or whatever colour noise is certainly
something that can be put up with, as in ANY other DSP rig. Wonder why this
topic suddenly pops up - and seems to be relevant to so many after 2
years... causing such a noise floor on the reflector! I listened to FT2Ks,
Orions, ... then purchased the K3. I must have had some good reasons.

 Hi all,
I have been following this thread with interest. My experience is that my

However, when I use it at a 'quiet' location such as our DXpedition to
 the
Isle of Jura or our contest site, the RX is extremely quiet. This leads
 me
to believe that I am simply suffering from a RX with a *lot* of gain. At
home, I simply turn down the RF gain and it is amazing how quickly the
 noise
lowers significantly! There is only about 30dB of isolation between
 antenna
1 and antenna 2 off the tuner which does not help the noise floor and as
such I have simply stopped putting an antenna in ant2 for HF, I only have
 my
 6m log periodic in there.
I think in a lot of ways we are chasing our tails here.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Elecraft W2 Interface Software Strange behaviour

2009-12-17 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM

The new software is really cool. It is now permanently on my screen and works
nicely.
A minor issue which will certainly be corrected in the future is than when
transmitting at 20 W (which happens to be what the TUNE PWR on my K3 is
adjusted to), the display jumps to 276...318 W and then settles down to 20
W. Tweaking the power around 20 W repeatedly sends it to such values,
anything between 19 and 22 W with result in such unrealistic values - which
then remain on display until I leave that range. This occurs whatever the
range is set to and with or without AUTO mode, Not a big concern as
otherwise everything is fine but I wonder whether anyone else noticed this?

Re: [Elecraft] [MM] W2 Questions [pending firmware changes and software applications]

2009-12-11 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM

Very interesting, indeed!

To all worrying about power consumption of the W2 (when connected to the
K3's 12 V output), it hardly ever reaches 500 mA with LED brightness set to
maximum - and some 100 mA when set to minimum (which IMHO is more than
bright enough).

We'll be making a number of improvements to W2 firmware in future
releases (starting in January). Firmware updates are very easy to do
on the W2, and the required serial cable is supplied.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Yaesu copies K3's design

2009-11-23 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM

I am amazed at the number of things that can be said on this reflector about
another brand's radio nobody owns...

The K3 is and remains my radio. And if anyone thinks the Japanese copied the
9 MHz IF from Elecraft, let me mention that my Ten-Tec Omni-D had the same
concept some 30 years ago... Of course, no DSP. Did Yaesu copy the Omni-D?
Of course not. Only, the big JA's at last realized that you cannot have
narrow roofing filters with an IF around 70 MHz!

And they failed to copy some of the K3's features:

The AC supply excludes any mobile operation and restricts portable operation
to places where such power is available. I like to work portable from my car
(with a separate battery) from any convenient site.

No 100 W version? That must be the reason – those MosFETs need some 50 V...
But with 200 W, who is going to notice the 3 dB difference (1/2 S-unit) on
his S Meter?

And how about a 2nd RX? Should a rig cost more than $ 10,000 to offer this
feature?
K3 owners know the answer.

If some people (not) in the know think the FT5K will be priced at some $
5,000, then you can afford a K3 and a few accessories to go with it (e.g.
the W2...).

The K3 is still The Only Affordable – and Portable – Elite Class
Transceiver!

[Elecraft] W2

2009-11-19 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM

Assembling the W2 took less than an hour (coffee break included). Everything
fits together nicely (as usual with Elecraft). And loading Rev 0.90 today
went smoothly.

The accuracy is quite satisfactory as checked against my Bird 43 (which,
admittedly, has not been calibrated for some time but I'm quite happy with
+/-5% which nobody will notice on his S-meter anyway!).
It appears that the PK HOLD function, though very convenient and reliable in
manual mode, behaves erratically in AUTO mode, always going back to 1 or
2...

Further, the SWR meter will never show 1.0, the 1.1 LED stays on, whatever I
do and even though the K3's meter shows 1:1.0 – even on a dummy load (no,
I'm not an SWR addict! But I just wonder why…)
I guess these minor issues will be dealt with in some future release...

Thanks, Elecraft, for another very nice product!

Re: [Elecraft] [MM] W2 review - and why the diode...

2009-11-16 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM

Hello David

Why the diode? Well, any relay driven by a solid-state device should have a
diode across its coil (in reverse polarity!) to short reverse voltage
spikes. Transistor are rather fast switches... and such spikes would damage
them. Never drive a relay from a transistor or IC without such a parallel
diode!

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] No output in digital mode

2009-11-08 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM

No such problem here, serial number 586, FW 3.54...
Richard - HB9ANM

When operating in digital A modes after holding the TUNE button, which gives
the proper power out indication, the following happens when going into PSK
transmit:
1, There is no power out of the K3
2, The ALC readout is showing the usual 3 bars and can be adjusted
3, There is no monitoring tone ( I have the monitor set at 6 to monitor my
output signal on psk).
