Re: [Elecraft] ] Elecraft] KPA500 to K3 control cable
And yet anonther trick that works: If the AUX cable is too short for you, you may EXTEND it using a normal, 15 pin straight-through cable (provided no wires are connected together or to ground). This can do no harm since the required interrupts are in the AUX cable. But ONLY as an extension, of course, not alone!!! 73 Richard - HB9ANM Steve Kercel wrote Another trick that works: If you're using a K3 and KPA500, there are only 9 lines needed, and two of those are grounds. A CAT5 cable has 8 lines. If you use one line for ground and connect it to both ground pins at each end, you have the necessary 7 lines left. I used this scheme to build a 15 foot jumper. It works perfectly. I discussed this with Eric before I tried it. 73, Steve AA4AK On 10/7/2012 7:44 AM, David Robertson wrote: Jim, The cable Elecraft sells is of top quality but is only 3 feet long. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Problem
That's right, Fred and Mike - This is exactly what I have been mentioning ever since I got my KPA500 a year ago. It only occurs when BND CHG is set to STBY, which I think is safer. Elecraft was able to reproduce it and said it would be corrected in a future release. The bug is supposed to be on the K3 side. IMHO, this is important to all, rather than AM (seldom used) and ESSB (I'd never do that!) 73 Richard - HB9ANM AC6JA wrote Fred, There is a known firmware issue which causes the K3 to sometimes forget to go back to 100W when switching the KPA500 from OPER to STBY. So far the K3 remembers to go to the preset PWR output levels when the KPA500 is in OPER. Elecraft is supposed to address this issue in a future firmware release. Don't worry, John, you can still use the K3 buttons as usual to change bands, but I would still recommend setting BND CHG to STBY on the KPA500 for safety if you are using a manual tuner. Spot on, Jim! I have NEVER used ALC with any PA. BTW, most ACOM amps for instance do not have an ALC output - they must know why! And one of two outputs switchable between balanced and unbalanced. Now we'll had to add a balun at the output, which arguably is suboptimal. On the other hand, I wonder why Elecraft should go into the trouble and expense of developing a high-power balun. AFIK, there are some good products already available... [Elecraft] Firmware Releases
I enjoy my K3 and KPA500 very much. But I notice there has been no new firmware releases for a fairly long time. IMHO this could mean: 1. Both the K3 and the KPA500 are so close to perfection that they are not easy to improve on (I tend to believe this...) 2. Wayne, Eric, Lyle et al are so busy with the KAT500 and the KX3 FW they don't have time for anything else (which I can understand, too!). I must say that some of the suggested features on the Reflector are rather marginal - or already implemented - not willing to offend anyone of course but sometimes, a spot of manual reading would solve a few issues. K3 FW 4.42 has been a Beta for over three months, which is rather unusual... Nevertheless, I'm happy with FW 4.39, not needing 4.42 anyway as I don't have the K3EXREF (I think the K3 is more than accurate and stable enough!) [Elecraft] KPA500
Two fellow hams and myself have found our KPA500's current draw to be just below 12 A at 58 V (i.e. less than 700 W) when putting out 500 W (as measured on a Bird and other Wattmeters). That would be the equivalent of 72% effectiveness... Amazing, to say the least! I wonder how accurate the KPA500's Ammeter is. Anyone else tapped HV and Current at 500W output? Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 fault
Hi Len My KPA500 is normally set to PWR ON = STBY, which is the factory default setting. But after setting it to OPER for a test, I noticed the same thing. I suspect this is a timing issue, just like leaving the K3 at low power on band change if BAND CHG is set to STBY. The next FW release is supposed to solve the problem. Re: [Elecraft] VGA Cables
It is clearly stated in the manual (as mentioned several times on the Reflector) that commercial VGA cables are NOT suitable for use with the KPA500 as some wires are grounded and/or connected together. The KPA500 will work with ANY radio providing PTT to ground. No cable required, except PTT! I do have the special cable between the K3 and the KPA500 but I also tried removing it and connecting the PTT cable only. Since the frequency sensor in the KPA500 supersedes any other band switching means (RTM!), there is no need, really, for a special cable when using non-Elecraft rigs. And the sensor does work, instantly and with only a fraction of a watt drive - even with the KPA500 in standby! I've just ordered another KPA500 for a friend (an Icom user), that's why I tried this out. So if you have anything else than a K3, don't worry, go PTT. The sensor will take care of the band switching just in case you forget. 73 and have fun with the KPA500 Richard - Richard - HB9ANM -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/VGA-Cables-mate-to-K3-ACC-Jack-tp6671097p6672612.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] VGA Cables
Yes, of course there are several advantages to using the AUX cable and I also got to the habit of changing bands with the KPA500 buttons (whether in operate or standby condition) - and with the Y cable, the K3 still controls the antenna relays through the BCD-10 band decoder without a problem. Everything is done at the push of a single button and you are ready to go... Very convenient indeed. Especially when chasing ST0R on different bands! If you have a K3, IMHO the AUX cable is a must! [Elecraft] KPA500 - Fan Suggestion
If set to NOR, the KPA500 fan will switch to speed 1 at 50C, speed 2 at 55C etc. If set to speed 1 manually, temperature rise will be slower and it will take longer to reach 55C or even 60C. Then it cools down more quickly. Maybe not a bad idea to leave it at speed 1 all the time, the noise is hardly noticeable (my laptop fan is louder!). Especially if you are an RTTY contester! My KPA500 is working like a champ with my K3 and AUX cable. [Elecraft] [K3]: APF or Dual PB? You can have both!
Like some others have reported, I often tapped the DUAL PB button instead of holding it, thereby selecting the SSB filter instead of engaging the APF... To avoid this, I chose to assign the APF to setup II of the HICUT/WIDTH button, so an unintentional tap would only switch between HICUT and WIDTH... which is not so annoying. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Power supply
That's right, Ron. But I like 13.8 VDC rigs, mainly for portabilty reasons... My FT-1000MP (though a wonderful rig) was a chore to switch over 230 VAC/13.8 VDC. But many modern rigs also have (built-in) PSUs for specific voltages: FT-1000 MkV and even the new FT-5000. But for 200 W? Just 3 dB more - hardly noticeable. I run my K3 on a little PSU and on a 12V lead-gel battery when operating portable. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Power supply
Now, why should Elecraft build power supplies? Let them stick to what we know their good at: making transceivers and ancillaries, kits, ... There is a plethora of good, clean PSUs on the market. Just for info: I have two, rated at 28 A peak, from a German provider but they look as if they were from Jetstream! No problem, no noise, working flawlessly for two years. Purchased at Friedrichshafen Ham Fair for about $ 90 each - so what are we talking about? Our friends at Aptos are busy working on the P3, KPA500, ATU... Why should they go into the trouble of developing yet another PSU when there are so many to choose from? - just for the fun of having a matching box next to the K3/P3? Re: [Elecraft] [MM] W2 Wattmeter
The W2 does exactly what it is supposed to do. And it does it pretty well. Assembly went smoothly. The problem IMHO is that it was developed by people who know a thing or two about power measurement, accuracy, resolution, precision and the like. For people who may not always be familiar with such matters... or are just accustomed to needle meters. With the W2 Utility and/or the W2 PC program, it is quite easy (and for some people maybe comforting) to adjust the W2 to match the 5+% error of your BIRD which is by no means supposed to be a standard (even if recently calibrated), hi... 73 Richard - HB9ANM KM4VX wrote: W2 WATTMETER I was doing some research and considering buying the Elecraft W2 for use with my 2 K-2s and read the very negative reviews of the W2's accuracy on E-Ham. I think Wayne must have a rather long wish list by now, full of very different feature requests with very different priorities... IMHO, the K3 already has virtually everything a serious DXer needs. I'll second that, Ian! I'm lucky to live in quite, rural QTH with no computers around except my own... So the K3's inherent white/pink or whatever colour noise is certainly something that can be put up with, as in ANY other DSP rig. I must have had some good reasons. 73 Ian Maude wrote: Hi all, I have been following this thread with interest. This leads me to believe that I am simply suffering from a RX with a *lot* of gain. At home, I simply turn down the RF gain and it is amazing how quickly the noise lowers significantly! There is only about 30dB of isolation between antenna 1 and antenna 2 off the tuner which does not help the noise floor and as such I have simply stopped putting an antenna in ant2 for HF, I only have my 6m log periodic in there. Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Elecraft W2 Interface Software Strange behaviour
The new software is really cool. It is now permanently on my screen and works nicely. A minor issue which will certainly be corrected in the future is than when transmitting at 20 W (which happens to be what the TUNE PWR on my K3 is adjusted to), the display jumps to 276...318 W and then settles down to 20 W. Tweaking the power around 20 W repeatedly sends it to such values, anything between 19 and 22 W with result in such unrealistic values - which then remain on display until I leave that range. This occurs whatever the range is set to and with or without AUTO mode, Not a big concern as otherwise everything is fine but I wonder whether anyone else noticed this? - Richard - HB9ANM -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/Elecraft-W2-Interface-Software-now-available-tp4179339p4182776.html Sent from the [K2] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] [MM] W2 Questions [pending firmware changes and software applications]
Very interesting, indeed! To all worrying about power consumption of the W2 (when connected to the K3's 12 V output), it hardly ever reaches 500 mA with LED brightness set to maximum - and some 100 mA when set to minimum (which IMHO is more than bright enough). We'll be making a number of improvements to W2 firmware in future releases (starting in January). Firmware updates are very easy to do on the W2, and the required serial cable is supplied. - Richard - HB9ANM -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/Re-W2-Questions-pending-firmware-changes-and-software-applications-tp4143406p4152397.html Sent from the [MM] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Yaesu copies K3's design
I am amazed at the number of things that can be said on this reflector about another brand's radio nobody owns... The K3 is and remains my radio. And if anyone thinks the Japanese copied the 9 MHz IF from Elecraft, let me mention that my Ten-Tec Omni-D had the same concept some 30 years ago... Of course, no DSP. Did Yaesu copy the Omni-D? Of course not. Only, the big JA's at last realized that you cannot have narrow roofing filters with an IF around 70 MHz! And they failed to copy some of the K3's features: The AC supply excludes any mobile operation and restricts portable operation to places where such power is available. I like to work portable from my car (with a separate battery) from any convenient site. No 100 W version? That must be the reason – those MosFETs need some 50 V... But with 200 W, who is going to notice the 3 dB difference (1/2 S-unit) on his S Meter? And how about a 2nd RX? Should a rig cost more than $ 10,000 to offer this feature? K3 owners know the answer. If some people (not) in the know think the FT5K will be priced at some $ 5,000, then you can afford a K3 and a few accessories to go with it (e.g. the W2...). The K3 is still The Only Affordable – and Portable – Elite Class Transceiver! 73 Richard - Richard - HB9ANM -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-Yaesu-copies-K3-s-design-tp4049475p4052441.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] W2
Assembling the W2 took less than an hour (coffee break included). Everything fits together nicely (as usual with Elecraft). And loading Rev 0.90 today went smoothly. The accuracy is quite satisfactory as checked against my Bird 43 (which, admittedly, has not been calibrated for some time but I'm quite happy with +/-5% which nobody will notice on his S-meter anyway!). It appears that the PK HOLD function, though very convenient and reliable in manual mode, behaves erratically in AUTO mode, always going back to 1 or 2... Further, the SWR meter will never show 1.0, the 1.1 LED stays on, whatever I do and even though the K3's meter shows 1:1.0 – even on a dummy load (no, I'm not an SWR addict! But I just wonder why…) I guess these minor issues will be dealt with in some future release... Thanks, Elecraft, for another very nice product! Re: [Elecraft] [MM] W2 review - and why the diode...
Hello David Why the diode? Well, any relay driven by a solid-state device should have a diode across its coil (in reverse polarity!) to short reverse voltage spikes. Transistor are rather fast switches... and such spikes would damage them. Never drive a relay from a transistor or IC without such a parallel diode! 73 Richard - HB9ANM David Ferrington, M0XDF wrote: Now that's a good idea.
