[Elecraft] K4 Front Panel Phones Jack
When I plug my AKG K240 headphones into the front panel jack, my K4D produces static when transmitting. Removing the headphones plug, my transmitted audio is normal. If I use the rear jack with these same headphones, there is no problem with my transmitted audio. The Elecraft K4 operating manual (rev 17, March 10,2022) states some headphones will not work with the front panel phones jack unless a resistor is added in parallel. The front phones jack depends on the transducer providing a resistance path to ground when inserted.I hope this can be fixed in a future firmware update. Considering the high noise level on the 75 meter band, has anyone had to use both 21 db of attenuation with PRE/ATTN button and additional attenuation with the RF/SQL encoder? [Elecraft] K4D Receiver Question
I find my receiver is very noisy. I know this time of the year receiver noise can be very high. I have to use all 21 db of reduction from the PRE/ATTN button and around 30 db reduction on the MRF encoder to get the radio quiet enough to hear hear signals adequately on the 75, 40 and 20 meter bands on my G5RV antenna. I can significantly decrease the noise with the NR set to a high level, but the signal is also degraded and reduced. The receiver auto attenuation is ON in the menu. All AGC settings are set to factory default. I am using the current R30 firmware, and all transmit and receive parameters check out OK. I would like to know if it is normal to have to use the MRF/SRF encoder to get the noise down on the receivers. All of the pics I have seen show the MRF/SRF set to zero (default). My K4D is equipped with the KAT4, KPA4 and 2 KSP4 speakers. This is a wonderful radio, and I want to operate it correctly. I get good reports on my signal. I have been told the CESSB increases my audio by 8db and the bandpass skirts are sharp and clean. Thanks for your thoughts on how I am operating this great radio. I am using CW in SSB mode in my K3. After changing frequency or band I tap my paddle to tune the KAT500 to the new memorized frequency. When I was using KAT500 F/W v1.42, I could use the dot side of the paddle to bring the KAT500 to the new memory frequency. When I programmed F/W v1.54 and tapped the dot side of the paddle, the KAT500 would go into bypass mode (the KAT500 AUTO LED would start blinking). The KPA500 did not like this and refused to amplify or go crazy. I now tap the dash side of the paddle, and the KAT500 likes the extra length of RF and makes the necessary changes to work correctly. Apparently the CW dot did not provide enough time for the KAT500 to complete the necessary parameters to work properly. All is well now, and I thought I would share this with everybody. [Elecraft] KPA500 Power Supply Module Issue
FYI When I received my KPA500 kit, one of the three U3 leads on the Power Supply Module was very brittle and broke when I tried to reposition the heat spreader during installation. I obtained a new U3 and installed it. The amplifier did not work when the new U3 was installed, and the heat spreader became very hot. I found out the power supply PCB is a double sided board, and the three U3 leads must complete the path from top to bottom of the board. Upon removing (desoldering) the broken U3, I broke the path of one or more of these solder-through holes. I corrected the problem by soldering all three leads on each side of the board. The heat spreader temperature returned to normal, and the KPA500 came to life and has worked well since. Changing CONFIG: TUN PWR back to NOR and reducing K3 PWR has helped to keep the amp from tripping to STANDBY from OPERATE when changing frequency within the same band. Occasionally the fault light might come on, but the amp does not trip to STANDBY. Holding the K3 TUNE button a second time will cause a click and clears the fault condition. The KAT500 is then ready to operate. I have removed the RCA cables and find they are not necessary in my case. Thanks again to all for the help. Hello Chris, Your video shows what I am experiencing also. Firmware v.1.15 seems to have been distributed to field testers to deal with the key line problem. So far v.1.11 is all that is available to us at this time. [Elecraft] [KAT500] Cabling Diagram
I have connected the cables as shown on page 6 of the KAT500 Automatic Antenna Tuner Owner's Manual, revision B3, November 20, 2012. I am connecting the K3, KPA500 and KAT500 using the DB15 interface cables and the two RCA (yellow end) cables for the separate key line. This diagram shows the key line interrupter inserted between the DB15 cable and the K3 ACC socket. I have not inserted the key line interrupter, and the system seems to work fine. However, I DO have to change the KPA500 from OPERATE to STANDBY when changing frequency because leaving it in the OPERATE position may cause the amp to FAULT when I hold the XMIT button on the K3. I believe the tuner is trying to search with high power. I wonder if inserting my key line interrupter would prevent this. All frequencies had been previously memorized by the KAT500. Thanks. [Elecraft] [K3] PSK31 Problem
When I transmit my buffer I am told that the first four characters of the first word in the string are not being transmitted. The string on my K3 display shows that all characters are scrolling correctly. I went into the setup screen and changed the timeout from 0 to 3000 thinking that would cure this problem, but it appears not to have corrected it. What would cause the first word to be shortened, and what might be the cure? Also, when I go from one data mode to another the cursor can change several Khz up or down from the center frequency. I am sometimes able to get it back to center if I change the mark and space pairs with the PITCH control. Once the cursor is centered I can go to other data modes and it stays near the center line. I am new to the data modes so I must not be doing something right. Any help to enlighten me would be appreciated. If the KAT500 is placed below the KPA500, this combination will have to sit level on the desk because the KAT500 doesn't appear to have a bale. If the KAT500 sits on top with one or more coax connections and the KPA500 bale is extended, it seems this might cause the tuner to slide backwards as has been previously stated. The K2 sits on top of the KAT100-1, but there are two anti-slide brackets bolted on the top panel of the KAT100-1 to keep it from sliding back when the KAT100-1 bale is extended. It seems that anti-slide brackets would prevent the tuner from sliding if placed on top of the KPA500. Just a thought. Thank you, Ron (AC7AC). The Radio Shack P/N 274-284 plug does indeed fit the STEREO/MONO jack on the back of the K3. The Radio Shack package shows it as a 1/8 Stereo Phone Plug. Nevertheless, it fits the K3 jack without wiggling around. I find it very hard to eyeball the difference between the 1/8 and 3.5mm plugs. [Elecraft] [K3] Speaker Plug
I am using two speakers with my K3. My plug fits loosely into the STEREO/MONO jack, and I have to be careful when I touch it or I lose the audio in one or both. I have looked through the owners manual and do not find the size of this plug. I would appreciate this information. [Elecraft] KPA500 240v Power Cable
The 240v 15amp power cord that can be plugged directly into the back of the KPA500 can be purchased at Datacomm Cables, Inc. (Cables.com). The 6 foot cable is listed as: C13615P-6 NEMA 6-15P to IEC320 C13 - 15A - 6 Feet. Gauge: 14, Wires 3, Jacket: SJT, Color: Black. Total price shipped: $18.25 This is a very nice molded cable, and I am using one on my KPA500. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 - key down current on CW
There is a 4 watt discrepancy between the 39 watts dialed in the K3 and the 43 watts that is shown on my PowerMaster meter. The PowerMaster coupler is attached directly to the output of the K3 (using a double male connector) with a 5 foot length of RG8 coax to the input of the KPA500. The PowerMaster reading is probably more accurate than the dialed in power. This could be factored into the efficiency equation. Calibration of the K3 power is not linear. Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 no RF until power cycle
Hi Jack, Thanks for the info, but TX INH was also off in my K3 as well. Something else appears to be causing this. Thanks again. Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 no RF until power cycle
Roger, MW0IDX Do you have the KEY Cable and the KPA3AUX cable BOTH connected between your K3 and KPA500? Jeoff, G3UCK is using the KPA3AUX cable only. As I understand it, on occasion he is still having no KPA500 RF until power is recycled. I am trying to find out if eliminating the KEY Cable when using the KPAK3AUX cable is supposed to cure this problem. Meanwhile, I am removing the KEY Cable from my K Line. [Elecraft] KPA-500 no RF until power cycles
Tonight I also experienced the KPA-500 not putting out power in SSB mode while the amp was in OPERATE mode. All parameters in the amp were normal. The K3 set power output correctly indicated 39 watts. With the amp in STANDBY mode the power went correctly to 100 set watts. I put the amp in OPERATE mode and pushed the TUNE button on the K3. The amp then started to work normally. I am using both a PA Key cable and the KPAK3AUX cable. The amp is set up for 240V operation. This is the first time I have experienced this. I also am wondering if this is a relay problem. [Elecraft] [K3] Using Both VFOs on 60 Meter Channels
Since I have programmed VFO A for SSB and VFO B for CW on the five 60 meter memory channels, I find it necessary to eliminate the asterisk I originally used on these channels. This keeps me from messing up VFO B frequencies. With the asterisk assigned to each channel tapping MV allowed VFO A to channel hop, but VFO B would not follow to next paired channel. Eliminating the asterisk forces me to tap MV to keep the VFO frequency pairs together. Am I missing something? [Elecraft] KAT500
I believe the K3/KAT500 will be similar to the K2/KAT100-1. Surely the KAT500 will have a retractable bale similar to the KAT100-1. This will mean the K Line components will not line up at the same height. I believe Wayne means for the tuner to be placed UNDER the K3 or KPA500. I would not place the KAT500 on top of the KPA500 restricting air flow to the amp, nor would I place it on top of the K3 restricting the sound from the K3 speaker (if the internal speaker is used). Does the KAT500 have a bale? Roy Morris W4WFB The KAT500 matches the K3/KPA500 footprint, but it's very thin (1.5 -- same height as the W2 wattmeter). You'll be able to place the KAT500 on top of either the K3 or KPA500. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] KPA500 Kit Assembly Illustration Clarification
The illustration on page 32 of the KPA500 Kit Assembly Manual, Rev D states a 5/16 (7.9mm) split ring lock washer is placed over two 5/16 (7.9 mm) fender washers. The illustration either shows TWO 5/16 split lock washers or the single lock washer is reflected off the fender washer giving the appearance of two split lock washers. Which is it? Thanks. [Elecraft] KPA500 Hum
Referring to kit assembly instructions, Rev B, June 22, 2011: The following is on page 33. When placing the transformer on the chassis you are told to press it toward the Z-Bracket so it does not hit the rubber bumpers installed earlier. Then above figure 49 on the same page it says the bumpers press against the side of the transformer near the bottom. Maybe some are installing the transformer so it is resting against the Z-Bracket causing vibrations (hum) and not firmly against the rubber bumpers as it should be. Also some of the wires may be trapped (pressed) between the transformer and the Z-Bracket causing the Z-Bracket to vibrate. I snugged the transformer against the rubber bumpers, and I can see light between the transformer and the Z-Bracket. I have not experienced any hum at all. [Elecraft] Installing K2 Internal Mic Adaptor
My K2 is an early serial number (2###). I am getting ready to install a K2 Internal Mic Adaptor that fits between the control board and the front panel board. There is a rather large component I mounted years ago on RP5 to smooth the sidetone. This component (I believe it is a 47uF cap but not sure) needs to be removed or relocated in order to install the mic adaptor. Any suggestions would be appreciated. [Elecraft] Using GM-5 Mic with K2
I would like to know if the CC1-K cable connects the 5v on pin #6 from the K2 to pin #6 on the GM-5 creating an unwanted bias. There is a 4 pin mic connection on the CC1-K the GM-5 plugs into. Does one of these 4 pins supply bias to the GM-5? Re: [Elecraft] Using GM-5 Mic with K2
Hello Don, Thanks for the suggestion to remove the jumper from the K2 header to remove the function circuit which will give me a clean pin #5 to use. I should then be able to interchange my MD2, MH2 and GM-5 mics without worrying about the bias line. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 on 240 VAC in the USA?
I am using a separate 220v cable with a 15 amp plug. This cable can be purchased from Datacomm Cables, Inc. It is NEMA 6-15P to IEC320 C13 - 5A - 6 Feet. This is a 14 gauge 3 wire SJT jacket black cable. Cost is $18.25 shipped. This is a molded cable on both ends and works well with my KPA500. I can easily replace the 6 amp fuses with the 12 amp fuses, turn over the fuse block, install the 115v cable. I am then ready for 115v operation. I like this flexibility without having to open the amp to make this change. I have no connection whatsoever with Datacomm Cables, Inc. other than being a satisfied customer. [Elecraft] KPA500 Missing Screws
It was interesting to read that others have found screws missing from the KPA500 kit. I was missing all of the 4-40, 3/16 (4.8mm) Flat Head, Black screws. I was able to complete the build, but I was not able to button it up. I am dead in the water until the new screws arrive. I was able to scrounge a few of these screws left over from parts of other Elecraft projects but not enough to install the front and top panels. I am confident these screws will arrive soon.
