Re: [Elecraft] K3 - TX gate issue
Hi Terry, I've only noticed this if the gate is set too close to the background noise. Imho, with a noise gate you want to set it as high as possible without causing pronounced clipping or shortening of spoken syllables. What you are likely to be hearing are spikes in the background noise, which cause the noise gate to open for a short fraction of a second. With differing noise environments or microphone and/or speaker changes, it will be necessary to readjust the microphone gain and/or noise gate settings. vy 73 de toby, DD5FZ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 eHam review after 2+ years
Hi Julian, I also think you have a fair point with regards to the transmitter. A radio with the K3's receive performance is going to be used very often to drive some high powered linears. Full ack. But the K3 was also designed to be a portable radio that could run off a 13.8V supply. And it does a wonderful job doing so. That I believe is the real limiting factor to the TX performance. It's all about compromise. Again full ack. But this got me wondering, especially as Elecraft apparently has not fully abandoned QRO PAs, according to mail from Wayne shortly after Dayton. Could the low power transverter output be usable (with minor modifications) to excite a highly linear, higher supply voltage, low noise, QRO TX amplifier chain and might this be a possible Elecraft product for K3s being used in a fixed fashion? Also one must not forget that the IMD at c. 20W generally speaking will be markedly better than at c. 80W. So the decision process of which external high power amplifier is to be used, should not only include how much driving power it requires but, more importantly, imho, how well the exciter behaves at the required drive level. vy 73 de toby -- DD5FZ K2 #885, K2/100 #3248, K3/100 #67 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 VFO tuning hash
Hi John and the List, What I've discovered and reported to factory tech support is a very noticable hash noise while in the receive mode with any bandwidth centered around 28.000 MHz to 28.050 MHz. And, it is also present while tuning RIT. I noticed something like this after adding the secondary receiver to my K3 many months ago. At least in my case, the actual physical layout (routing) of the cables to and from the synthesizers, the reference and the receivers turned out to be critical and rather touchy. After a fair amount of fiddling I managed to reduce the hash to a point where it was below the noise level from the antenna on a quite, inactive band. Apparently something was coupling into and then elsewhere out of the shields of the coax wiring around the synthesizers. If I remember correctly, the smallish knob for the secondary RX was worse than the big main knob, and when the two receivers were tracking the hash was much stronger then when they weren't Because I do not do 5MHz or 50MHz, I can't really comment about these bands. vy 73 de toby -- DD5FZ (ex 4n6fz, dj7mgq, dg5mgq, dd5fz) K2 #885, K2/100 #3248, K3/100 #67 DOK C12, BCC, DL-QRP-AG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Dual Receive Surprise
One curious phenomenon I've noticed is comparing digital versus analog TV signals. My cable service uses the same channel on cable as the over the air VHF channel for the local broadcast TV stations. All signal en-, trans- and decoding will require at least one to two frames. At work the broadcast signals of the same program which leave our company will often have a delta of a second or so depending on what kind of processing was necessary (i.e. satellite broadcast, terrestrial broadcast, internet stream, etc.). Also any resynchronizing which may occur in the various system the signal is passed through also costs time. This is most likely what you are noticing. vy 73 de toby ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] KRX3 Installation ; ERR VCO 00227
After installing the latest firmware, I installed the KRX3 that I just received yesterday. All went smoothly until I went to Calibrate KsYN3 (p 43 in KRX3 Manual). I keep getting ERR 00227 VCO. I also received the ERR 00228 VCO one time. Before calling Elecraft, you could try pulling the synthesizer, check that nothing could be shorting to the shield and then reinstalling it. After I installed my KRX3, my original synthesizer was giving me similar error codes. In an act of wild desperation, I pulled it and plugged it back in, adding two washers (one left and one right, if I remember correctly) so that it was tad further away from the shielding. Since then I have not had any more problems. I assume that it was moved a tiny bit closer to the shielding while I installed the KRX3, bringing it close enough to make contact. The two washers I added were in the installation manual for the KRX3's VFO but not in my (early) construction manual for the basic K3 (#67). Re: [Elecraft] K3 ADAT ADT-200A by HB9CBU
Hello Julian, Technology is wonderful, but I still have an extreme reluctance to adopt any kind of SDR that is based on general purpose computers... The one of the interesting things about using personal computers for SDR is imho that generally more people can take part in their development in major or minor ways. This is why I just recently decided to purchase the QS1R - it is open source, which, if I so decide, will allow me to tinker with it. I've got a hankering to unite a panadapter with information from the WinTest band map, DX-cluster spots and maybe a few other goodies. No idea when and if I'll actually do this, but with this kind of an open system I (much more easily) can if I want. I understand your concern about the rapid rate of obsolescent in the PC world. I would argue that with a clever choice of which interface to use, some concepts will actually survive many hard- and software cycles. This way at least the hardware of the radio wouldn't have to be changed. The software would likely be less stable, but otoh as the hardware becomes more powerful, newer software come become more complex and offer new features. Other than that there is the simple fact that general purpose computers are not as stable as dedicated hardware and you have all the hassle of keeping them free of viruses etc... The easy answer is: Never fix a working system, don't install anything you don't really need and don't use the computer for anything else. But then we are getting close a dedicated solution. I don't really care what goes on inside the box but I want my radio in a box marked radio with its own independent controls... I personally dislike black boxes. I want to know about what is going on inside. The choice of user interface has a lot to do with what one wants to do with the radio, and is one one of the reasons I really love my K3. That being said, if you have ever worked in a well designed professional video editing suite or control room, then you soon realize that while much of equipment on the market do have reasonable user interfaces, they are not nearly as good as they could be. Especially when you look at the sum of all equipment in the average shack. It often has to do with little things, like what position does your wrist have to be in to push a button, move a slider, how far do I have to move my hands to perform an operation and how many steps are involved, etc. Adding knobs, buttons and putting the SDR in a box may or may not be the best way to go. vy 73 de toby ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Hi Larry, I have lots of experience with video editing suites, both traditional, and high end workstation based systems. They each have their advantages, and I haven't noticed any speed advantage for either when it comes to post-production. When it comes to live production, however, buttons and knobs win hands down IMO. The point is not so much *if* buttons, sliders, knobs and the like are better, but how the operating controls are arranged. For example, I would hate to think of doing a live edit of a sports event if everything is mounted a vertical plane. Otoh, I was involved in a live sports magazine show, which was produced in a virtual studio - this would not have been possible without a context sensitive GUI on a computer screen. For a contest situation I would like a little of both, especially if my hands do not have to wander around to operate various parts of the station and at the same time do the logging. vy 73 de toby PPS: Amazing how my innocent question whether the ADT-200A had been tested somewhere, has resulted in a wonderful thread dealing with many aspects of modern radio design... ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 ADAT ADT-200A by HB9CBU
Hi Phil, There is no inherent reason why the MDS could not be that low in direct sampling SDRs. It is mainly a matter of design decision/implementation. This may be a stupid (or at least ignorant) question, but if the dynamic range of the ADC itself is defined by the number of bits it resolves and a maximum voltage must never (should never) be exceeded, wouldn't improving MDS by 10 to 15db create major problems with the high end of the scale? I would tend to think that analog solutions could be more forgiving or that the K3 path which provides an AGC to protect the ADC might be (at present) a better way to go. Or are you suggesting using much faster ADCs so that you have a higher level of over sampling, allowing more process gain during decimation? vy 73 de toby ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 RX AGC right after a transmission
Hi Lyle, Yes, AGC is suspended during transmission, then resumes during receive. The assumption is that the band hasn't changed that much in the milliseconds (CW QSK) to several seconds (SSB voice). I've noticed this in SSB contests - I'm not sure if we exchanged mails because of this or not. The effect sounded as if the K3 had become hard of hearing and took a second or so to recover. What I am no longer sure about, is whether I had set AGC to slow or fast. While the assumption that during transmission reception levels have not changed, generally tends to be correct, at times it is not. I wonder if it would be too complex to return from transmission in an AGC fast mode and then switch to the mode which the user has chosen after say 100mS or so. I could imagine that with a bit of tweaking, an automatic change of the AGC timing shouldn't be noticeable except for the fact that the recovery after transmission would be masked. Just an idea... vy 73 de toby -- DD5FZ (ex 4n6fz, dj7mgq, dg5mgq, dd5fz) K2 #885, K2/100 #3248, K3/100 #67 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. has anybody done a serious test of the ADT-200A transceiver yet? When I asked this question, I sure did not expect the very educational discussion which has broken out. I'm very thankful, as a photographer who programs graphic systems for television, many good points were made which I might not have thought about on my own. From a purely amateurish SWL point of view, I have had the chance to play with a few very expensive high end LW/MW/SW receivers, designed for use by the government, military, etc. One thing which has struck me, was the often poor IMD2 behavior of these radios, unless if they were using good, fairly small-band input filters. Also a real world test of a radio, would also have to deal with aspects such as the user interface as well. This is one of the reasons I did not upgrade from the Flex-1000 to the Flex-5000. I did however upgrade K2 to K3, and despite whatever inherent minor weakness it might have, I'm not sorry that I did. vy 73 de toby -- Real radios don't care whether they have knobs or not... Re: [Elecraft] K3 and Perseus SDR as a 2nd RX
Hi Gerry, There is no need for additional filtering since the Perseus has 9 six pole front-end bandpass filters (1.7 - 30 MHz.) plus a 3 pole low pass for 10 kHz. - 1.7 MHz.) I hope you don't mind my being at slightly sceptical that a low pass filter is enough for serious LW/MW work. If one has a medium wave or long wave broadcast stations in the vicinity, then additional filtering will almost surely be needed. Also it will be interesting to read how well the IMD behavior of the SW front end filters themselves in such a small enclosure is. Small sized toroids can, from what I know, be a weak point in a receiver with high dynamic range. From what I've heard radios such as the Perseus appear indeed to be very interesting but as always, a new technology, like good wine, needs time to mature. vy 73 de toby ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Questions about ARRL review
Hi Doug, Can someone explain to me why the above/below results for these two filters are so disparate at these narrow spacings? Let me speculate... you might want to read the description by PA3AKE, especially the chapters on his development of his roofers: http://www.xs4all.nl/~martein/pa3ake/hmode/index.html He talks about, among other things, how important clean surfaces are for good IMD performance in crystals filters. - Quartz and IMD The surface finish plays a big role in the linearity of the quartz. Particles (micro dust) polluting the surface of the quartz are known to cause IMD. To make things considerably worse, the IMD they cause is not following 3rd order law by any means. (from the PA3AKE website) - Sherwood also mentions this in the information (in one of the audio files, if I remember correctly) available at his web site. If one of the crystals in the filter is dusty then you ought to see an immediate difference. My 2700Hz filter, if our numbers (DD5FZ DK4YJ) are really correct, is better than the ARRL filter but the difference is not major. I assume this is due to normal variance which occurs during the production process (and minor differences in the calibration of the measurement equipment). Also the 8 pole 2800Hz filter is likely to have a bit more attenuation in the passband than a 5 pole filter, which may have a minor affect on the amount of IMD in the post filter IF amps and second mixer. All of this could combine to explain the differences at 1kHz and 2kHz spacing. On the other hand, at 20kHz both filters are almost identical, so a dusty quartz crystal may not be part of the reason after all. review suggests that the observed asymmetry is quite unusual For many filter topologies the asymmetry is perfectly normal. Not to forget that in a design such as the K3, it's the first 20dB to 30dB of stop band attenuation which are really important. The final total selectivity comes from the DSP filter and not from the roofing filter. This said, I am playing with idea of rolling my own roofing filters for my K3 for three reasons. Firstly, can a couple dBs be tickled out by using extremely good crystals (expensive!)? Secondly, it should be educational. And most importantly, HAMs just wanna have fun. One thing the ARRL report does show, and I agree with this after having a 2700Hz filter in my K3 for about a year now, the five pole 2700Hz filter is plenty good. An 8 pole filter (i.e. the 2800Hz filter) does not appear to be necessary. vy 73 de toby -- DD5FZ (ex 4n6fz, dj7mgq, dg5mgq, dd5fz) K2 #885, K2/100 #3248, K3/100 #67 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Questions about ARRL review
Hi Geoff, Not to forget that in a design such as the K3, it's the first 20dB to 30dB of stop band attenuation which are really important. Maybe, assuming that the IMD performance of the roofer and ALL stages which follow the roofer is good enough at those spacings. It also depends on whether you are talking about signals within the pass band of the roofing filter or signals in the stop band. I would argue that within the roofing pass band the K3 does have weaknesses, but if the roofing filter bandwidth is close to the DSP bandwidth, then these become secondary as other aspects such as TX and RX phase noise will start to become limiting factors, especially at narrow bandwidths. Something to bear in mind is that the passband insertion loss of a quadrature type roofer using good crystals is less than that of most roofing filters of the same bandwidth, which will increase signal levels at the IF's input all other things being equal. The difference can be as much as 6 - 8db in the case of a 500 Hz roofer. Which could be taken care of by using a 6dB resistive pad, should the lower loss become a problem. I rather doubt that a quadrature type will fit into the space which Elecraft has alloted per filter. It could be the largest challenge if I decide to go the path which you and Martein have. disc ceramic capacitors - bad for IMD! Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Questions about ARRL review
Hi Lyle, If you look at the larger values of attenuation (134 vs 115, or 113 vs 93) the result is mostly due to the difference in shape factor of the roofing filter. Expressed differently, an 8-pole filter is likely to have a steeper slope in its selectivity curve than a 5-pole filter. But on the other hand, AFAIK, an 8 pole filter will tend to be more likely to create higher distortion of the Nutzsignal due to group and phase delay, ringing, etc. at each pole. So more poles is not always better than less poles. vy 73 de toby ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Hi Geoff, Which could be taken care of by using a 6dB resistive pad, should the lower loss become a problem. A pity to lose any potential improvement in overall noise figure by doing that, especially on the higher bands! Yep. It would be nice to avoid the resistive pad but any gain on the high bands could be detrimental on the lower. A problem if your two favorite shortwave bands are 160m and 10m. Of course front end attenuation is only a button push away... Putting aside the K3 and thinking in the context of receivers in... Re: [Elecraft] K3: New (Jan 2009) ARRL review
Careful reading of the review will reveal that the particular 1.8 KHz filter was probably defective. Elecraft run much higher signal levels in the first IF filter than other radios. That higher signal level can cause filter generated IMD if the crystals are not absolutely clean. I've had two sets of filters (2x 2.1kHz and 2x 1.8kHz) and all four filters showed more or less similar dynamic performance to what the ARRL has seen. My filter setup is as follows: FM, 2700, 2100, 1800, 400 in the main RX and in the KRX3 6000, 2700, 2100, 1800, 400. I agree with you about the possible cause and I do know that Elecraft has been working hard on improving this, but all four of these filters did not prove to be terribly detrimental in any of the shortwave SSB contests my K3 has been used in or during the pile ups when it was with us on the Faeroe Islands (OY). To use German expression: Lets leave the church in the village. In other words, there is no need for storm in a tea glass. While the dynamic range is not as good as one might want, these filters are still very good for fishing out a weak one, stuck between two big guns. vy 73 de toby ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Strange problem on 10 Meter SSB with power
Hi Lyle, I do not know if we all might be talking about various ills with similar symptoms. It might be that more than effect might be behind the various observations, imho. What I have, to the best of my memory, observed in various firmware versions is that there is/was a tendency for the K3 to have lower output in SSB on both(?) sidebands than in CW or tune modes. The output is at times 1dB less and at times 6 or more dB lower. This effect is stronger at lower power levels than at higher and usually occurred after changing the power level request while in SSB. This was at times a major fubar, but in the newer versions of the K3 firmware on my K3 (#67) the situation has greatly improved. Because I had sent more than one mail to Elecraft, in the distant past, about this and the situation, at least for me, has been improving, I did not want to harp about it. For example, during our expedition to OY in early July such weirdness only popped up very rarely. I have not tested the newest beta firmware for this (yet). I have the 2.7kHz filter in my K3. vy 73 de toby, dd5fz Lyle Johnson wrote: The problem I have been aware of is the LSB/USB power output difference. Re: [Elecraft] K3 6m pre-amp
Hi Bob, It looks like you may have gotten your column headings reveresed :-) Yep - mea culpa... I read the K3 comparison the BCC group did earlier. You mentioned you would be trying out the K3 in the 160m contests. Yes we have and we have also used it in several other contests. Did you ever write up a report on that? I'm very curious to see your experiences on 160m with the K3. Not really, but to give you a feel for the general opinion of the BCC members who have used it: The K3 is a very capable contest rig. During the Russian DX contest, DL8OBD said he was not always happy with the AGC. He was working mainly CW and I did the SSB parts. I have not had a chance to talk with him after the contest yet, to find exactly what he did not like. All others, e.g. DL2MLU, DL6RAI, DK4YJ, DG7RO, DK3YD, etc., have been happy with the default values for and action of the AGC in CW and/or SSB. One wierd comment was that one OM did not like the way some of the knobs, e.g. PWR/CMP, feel. He said they feel wobbly to him. This has never bothered me. I can not remember any other negative comments, apart from the SSB modulation, which is well on its way to being solved in the last couple versions of the firmware. I hope the SSB power level offset will solved soon as well. What else can I say... During CQ 160m CW the K3 was used as a secondary RX. I did not partake in this contest but was told that everything which could be heard with the K3 could also be heard with a TS-850 and vice-versa. And during the 160m SSB contest, the highlight was DL6RAI and DG7RO working Ducie Island about 20 minutes or so after our local sunrise! We could hear them working stations in the south western part of the USA, and that they heard us says a lot about the rigs (K3s), antennas and operators at both ends. Without having a direct A/B comparison, during a 2-meter contest I really had the strong impression I could still read SSB signals, which I would not have been able to read with a TS-850 as the backend. The transverter at our club station is a bit on the old side, but still quite good. The 2m contest was otherwise a bit of a disappointment, because the TX/RX switch of the 144MHz 500W PA malfunctioned. I was also very happy with the K3 in the RTTY WPX. I could get very close to a very strong local station and still dig out weak signals. The 400Hz roofing filter performed well in this role from our local club station, where we have a large contest station less than a mile away. I did not miss having a smaller roofing bandwidth. The dual passband RTTY DSP filter was not as useful as I had expected. It was nice to have, but I don't think I ever really needed it. vy 73 de toby -- DD5FZ (ex 4n6fz, dj7mgq, dg5mgq, dd5fz) K2 #885 K2/100 #3248 K3/100 #67 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Configuration
Hallo Ian, In the manual, once you have finished the calibrations, it says to turn off TECH MD. You don't really have to turn off the TECH MODE. The manual, imho, tells you to (suggests that you) turn off the TECH MODE, so that the chance of changing a sensitive menu item by mistake is reduced. I sometimes have it on and sometimes have it off. The SSB power level problems discussed recently on the reflector don't appear to be caused by the calibration at 1mW, 5w and 50W. Elecraft is, afaik, working on a fix, and I assume it will have been dealt with in the next major firmware update. fingers=crossed vy 73 de toby -- DD5FZ (ex 4n6fz, dj7mgq, dg5mgq, dd5fz) K2 #885 K2/100 #3248 K3/100 #67 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 and linear amp
Hallo Roger, delay times. So far there's been no response from Elecraft concerning this subject after a few days of discussion on this list. We don't even know if they could easily make the modification in the firmware. Elecraft has said in the past, several times, that they will be adding this to the menus sometime in the future. Also The FAQ on the Elecraft web site has the following information (for at least 6 or 7 Months now): === Is there a relay output from the K3 to switch on an external amplifier? If so, is it done via the accessory connector on the rear panel? Yes; it has its own connector (KEY OUT) on the rear panel. The KEY OUT line is a MOSFET, open-drain (equivalent to open collector in a BJT device). It can handle a lot of current AND a lot of voltage. Exact specs TBD. Does the K3 have a variable delay (0-50ms) to control older amp TX relays (i.e., SB-220, L4B, etc.)? Yes. It also has a separate PTT input jack, so you can pre-switch the amp using a footswitch, etc. This delay is provided to prevent hot-switching of amplifiers and the adjustment range will cover any likely need. The variable delay is a feature that will be available after initial shipment. What is the voltage and current limit to control TX amp relays? The keying device is rated at 200 volts, 6 amps. === http://www.elecraft.com/K3/K3FAQ.htm vy 73 de toby ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Firmware 1.78
Hi Roy, Please work on increasing the SSB power output. I can get 1KW output on my amplifier with 28 watts from the K3 when tuning up. However, to get the same output in SSB the PWR has to be increased to 55 watts. I haven't had a chance to test the newest firmware yet, but this sounds a lot like something I reported to Elecraft a while back. The funny thing is that the power offset between SSB and CW is not always the same and usually worse at powers at the low end of the scale (c. 30 W). At the high end, 100W are 100W in CW and SSB. I found resetting the power several time helps. I've heard that they *are* working on a solution. We will have wait for the next major update I suppose. vy 73 de toby -- DD5FZ (ex 4n6fz, dj7mgq, dg5mgq, dd5fz) K2 #885 K2/100 #3248 K3/100 #67 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] [K3] KRX3 Status Update from Wayne
Hallo, http://www.elecraft.com/K3/krx3_update_from_wayne.htm === KRX3 Status Update from Wayne March 11, 2008 We expect to receive the initial batch (20) of production KRX3 modules this week. We'll post a photo as soon as they arrive. Subreceiver operating firmware is still in progress, but the basics have now been tested successfully on prototypes. I don't anticipate any serious issues with the production boards, so we should be able to start ramping up production in the next several weeks. Diversity receive is working (as you may have guessed when the VFO Linking feature showed up in the latest firmware release.) With headphones, it sounds a like an extra-rich version of our AFX function; but more important, it helps with fading if two different antennas are used. I also spent some time operating split -- listening to VP6DX in the left headphone channel (main) and the pileup (sub) on the right. No need to press REV to check the TX frequency! Re: [Elecraft] My wish list (of small refinements)
Hi, RX width Please make the K3 remember filter choice and width by band. Sometimes it doesn¹t and I haven¹t figured out when and why. It is a little annoying having to ³NORM² filters when returning to a specific band and mode after swapping around. Filter bandwidth by mode makes sense. I do not think bandwidth per band/vfo does. I would not want to see the present behavior changed. [Elecraft] [Fwd: [K3] Something which could be improved for blind Hams]
Hallo, near the venue of the Amateurfunktagung 2008 in Munich, there is a school for the blind. Several of the people from the school are Hams and used the chance to take a first look at the K3. Their general impression of the K3's usability by the sightless was good and they really liked the curved buttons, to help them navigate. Also they liked the tip and press use of the buttons. The one thing they did miss was a small embossment on the 5 of the keypad. This might be something which Elecraft could add they said, so I said I'll post it to the reflector. vy 73 de toby ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Hi Mike, I've not seen exactly what you are reporting, but I have seen similar behavior in the present and the previous firmware versions. These I reported to Elecraft. I suggest you send a detailed description to [EMAIL PROTECTED]. In my case, the misbehavior which was the most similar to yours, were power spikes when barely moving the PWR knob in SSB and using the transverter 0dBm output for a 144MHz transverter. Re: [Elecraft] K3 filter presets I/II: present and future functionality
Hi Wayne, Before we make any changes, I'd like to know: - if you use presets at all - if you like the new proposal better (making them fixed) The easy answer is, allow both modi. The use can choose in a menu which way he wants the function. Up to now I have not used the I/II filters very much, but could easily see two configurable standard presets per mode as very useful. vy 73 de toby ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3-Latest K3 Review on EHAM
Hi Bob, I have yet to hear a K3 but no one else has noticed such problems? A small yes and a big no. Several BCC members (DD5FZ, DL6RAI, DK4YJ, DG7RO usw.) feel that the speech processor is not as effective as it could be and that for contesting the modulation is too nice and needs more punch. Apart from this minor gripe (I just got home from CQWW 160m SSB) K3 #67 does very very well indeed in SSB, TX as well as RX. Re: [Elecraft] Filter question
Hi Bill, You need the KBPF3 filter if the BBC is not broadcasting in or near a Ham radio band. The BBC generally does not do this. You also need the KBPF3 if you want to listen to medium wave. You need the 6kHz filter to listen to AM with good fidelity. Conclusion: Imho, you will want to have both. vy 73 de toby Bill Kimura wrote: Thank you Toby! Just so I'm clear, the 6kHz filter would allow me to listen to the UK BBC, etc. at full fidelity, and the KBPF3 module wouldn't be needed? Re: [Elecraft] Filter question
Hi Bill, The standard front end filters are tuned to the Ham bands only. Far enough outside of our bands the receiver will loose a lot of sensitivity because of this. To cover the regions used e.g. by broadcasters you need the KBPF3. This has nothing to do with the roofing filters. Depending upon your need to transmit AM and or listen to AM in a higher quality, you can use either the SSB filter for reception only (you listen to either the upper or lower sideband using SSB), or you need the 6kHz filter for real AM demodulation, which also gives you the ability to transmit AM. I wouldn't use the FM filter for this, but ymmv. For FM you will need the FM filter. Also if you want to add the second rx, don't forget that it needs its own filters. It does not share the KBPF3 or roofing filters with the main rx. Hope this helps, vy 73 de toby ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] K3 AM vs FM filter
Hi Björn, Has anyone tested the FM filter for AM broadcast reception? If so, what is The FM filter is not available yet, so no idea... Regarding AM voice operation, I do one AM contest per year. I guess it would be possible to use the FM filter also for AM TX and restrict the bandwidth on a DSP/audio level, or is this a bad idea? According to Eric Wayne (check the list archives) a questionable idea. The FM filter may not have enough image rejection (15kHz image). http://www.nabble.com/Re%3A-Re%3A-K3-AM-operation-with-%22FM%22-roofing-filter--to14077480.html#a14077593 vy 73 de toby ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] [K3] CQ WW WPX RTTY - a mini summary
Just got home from our local club station. For my first ever shortwave RTTY and my VHF RTTY experience is a couple decades old, i.e. before packet radio, I must say I am very happy how easy the K3 could be set up and how well it worked. Especially as an almost absolute beginner in this mode, there were no serious hick ups, not one. Mni thx to Ben, DL6RAI, who helped set up the laptop software. I did notice one strange thing, and am wondering if anyone else saw this. I used FSK and not AFSK, and when the FSK line is toggled, the power output goes up and down. The power meters in the K3, the PA, the matchbox and the SWR meter were a tad nervous while transmitting. As long as the K3 transmits an unmodulated signal the power level is stable. At any rate, after 930 QSOs and with a claimed score of just under 1.5 million, I can say I am one happy ham. vy 73 de toby BAND QSO DUP PFX POINTS AVG --- 80 274 0 1341026 3.74 40 492 0 2422076 4.22 20 164 0 52 400 2.44 15 0 00 0 0.00 10 0 00 0 0.00 --- TOTAL 930 0 4283502 3.77 === TOTAL SCORE : 1 498 856 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. So, K3 would put out 50W at first and than quickly go back to proper level of 25W. This would put my AMP in to fault every time. Does anybody know what am I doing wrong?
