[Elecraft] KAT3 ATU Problem

The relative adaptationspeed of the control algorithm and the TX powerramp-up could certainly cause interactions thatmight slow the ATU convergence, but I wouldthink that once the TX output power stabilized, the ATU control algorithm would be receivingvalid SWR readings as it flips relays. When you say it takes seconds to ramp upto full (TUNE) output power, does this happenon every TUNE button press? Does it also occurwhen you send CW from the paddle/key? Canyou watch the RF envelope on a scope to timethe power ramp-up?73,Mike, K8CN >* Mike, Thanks for that and I do understand what you say about the possibilty of the control algorithm getting confused by the slow ramp up of power. Last week Rob at Elecraft Support had me using a 50 ohm dummy load with the KAT3 bypassed. Set PWR to 5.0 W and hold down XMIT to TUNE, this performs a Tx gain calibration. Then set to 11.9 W and TUNE again. My results were 5W immediately but rising from 8.4 to 9.8 W in about 6 seconds Rob then had me checking WMTR LP setting in CONFIG menu (TECH MD ON). This was set to the default value of 70 which he suggested I increase . (I'm not at all sure what this is doing). Increasing this value to the maximum of 180 gave me 10 W increasing to 12.0 W in 2 seconds, faster but still quite a delay. This does happen on every TUNE button press but I don't have any problem during my daily use of the rig on CW. I have not fired up my old Tektronix scope yet to look at the keying envelope. Elecraft Support have gone quiet this week so no further progress. 73 and thanks for your help, Tom G3OLB __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] KAT3 ATU Problem
Mike (K8CN) and others - thanks for your inputs. I'm talking to Paul at Elecraft Tech Support who, by the way, is being most helpful. He reckons I have a problem with the Low Power Amplifier which takes a few seconds to come up to full output power. I'm not at all sure how that affects the SWR measurement and ATU setting, but I'm going to follow along with his advice and see where it gets me! Then perhaps I'll start looking in detail at the SWR bridge components. [Elecraft] K3 Auto ATU Problem
Thanks NK7Z, NK7I and K8CN for responses. Dave and Rick indicated that running the K3 at a higher power level during the ATU Tune sequence might solve the problem however, as far as I can see, the power level is fixed at 5 watts during auto tune and cannot be altered. Mike, there is no problem with the Ant 1 and Ant 2 ports and manual selection of L & C works OK. The ATU just won't end up with the right settings for lowest SWR. [Elecraft] K3 Auto ATU Problem
I'm wondering if someone can help with a KAT3 ATU problem on my K3 S/No.01434? When bypassed, the K3 SWR indication agrees with that on an external SWR meter. This is also so when the KAT3 is replaced with a KANT3 board. When in AUTO mode it goes through its relay rattling sequence for each band, but ends up with a mis-match as indicated by the K3 meter. For example, with a 50 ohm load, in BYPASS the K3 indicates 1.0:1 SWR on all bands as it should. When in AUTO mode the indicated SWR is anything up to 4.4:1. I have tried a different KAT3 with the same results. I have also re-loaded the firmware (version 05.67/2.88/2.88/1.26). [Elecraft] Trees eating wire
Wayne's problem with a tree eating his wire reminds me of an incident some years ago when I was attempting to get an antenna halyard over a tall oak tree. I used some braided nylon cord with a probable breaking strain of several hundred pounds, which was attached to a drilled golf ball. My catapult put the ball and cord over a branch somewhat lower than intended so I attempted to pull it back. Of course the inevitable happened and the ball wound itself around the branch. No matter how hard I pulled the cord it wouldn't come. So I wound the cord around a piece of wood and with my heels dug into the ground, gave it my full body weight plus some. Finally it released itself and the golf ball shot towards me hitting me in the right foot and breaking several bones. I had literally shot myself in the foot! I'm just thankful it wasn't 2 or 3 feet up otherwise my voice would now be an octave or so higher. Heard the guys sniggering behind the curtain in the hospital A department after I told them I had shot myself with a golf ball. XYL not at all impressed at having to drive me to the salt mine for 6 weeks. Lead weights used by anglers could be even more lethal. Needless to say I don't use that method any more and now use a compressed air device with weighted tennis balls which works a treat! 73, Tom G3OLB __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Aged K3 - connector replacement
After deliberating for years about my ability to change the 28 way motherboard to front panel connector on my 10 year old K3 for a gold plated one, I finally plucked up the courage and did the job in about 2 hours. Elecraft supplied me with a replacement connector some years ago. I have to say it was a lot easier than I expected and hopefully will now perform without all sorts of random faults being displayed and regular removal and re-fitting of the front panel. So if, like me, you are not sure about doing the job, remove the front panel and top and front bottom panels to give maximum access. Remove the old connector by snipping the plastic between each pin one at a time, use a solder sucker and hold the pin while removing it with a small croc clip. When they are all out, clean solder out of all the holes with fine solder-wick braid and flux. The new connector should then push into place. Re-solder on the opposite side of the board to the connector and the solder will flow through and around each pin. My K3 appears to be working perfectly now, so am hoping it will now stay that way! 73, Tom G3OLB __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] [K3] Detuning Antenna Per Band and QSK
Brian, I think Jim is more concerned about his beverages losing their directional properties due to re-radiation of received signals from his transmit antenna. I don’t think there is a simple way of doing this and it’s probably best to abandon QSK operation when using the beverages and use a relay, operated by the K3 PTT output, which open circuits the base of the inverted ‘L’. 73, Tom G3OLB Another way to do what you want might be to switch some attenuation into the receive path during transmit. I assume you are using the RX antenna port for the beverages. The switching could be done with pin diodes with the timing tuned to allow QSK. Hope this helps. [Elecraft] K3 Erratic SSB Power Output (G8DX)
Jack, Each time I have had problems with my K3, including the one described by yourself, I have fixed it by removing the front panel, carefully cleaning all connector contacts and re-assembling. I put a thin layer of 'Contralube' (Maplins) on the connector pins which not only keeps the connector surfaces in good condition but also reduces the amount of force needed to remove the panel. I can do it with my thumbs now and don't have to use the little screw driver slot. Remember to remove that screw on the 3-D block on the lower left side. Good luck! [Elecraft] Inv-L joy
What bothers me about putting the actual antenna wire across the tree is that it is then very close and in fact touching the tree. I'm not sure what loss the tree would cause by having it so close. My inverted-L is held 85 ft up in an ash tree by nylon rope. I have a rope and insulator near the bottom which stands it off from the tree in the direction of the top section. I guess mine is 5 or 6 ft away at the top and further at the bottom. Nylon rope is pretty good from an abrasion viewpoint but it will still abrade. My L came down recently after well over a year of backwards and forward over the branches, so now my annual maintenance will include lowering the antenna, shortening the halyard at the top end to allow a fresh section of rope across the branches. Polyester rope is not nearly as abrasion resistant as nylon but looks very similar, so be careful what you are using! 73 Tom G3OLB __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] (K3) SWR Consistent - low or high power
My theory in these cases is that it's nothing to do with bad antenna connections, but more due to the rig putting out a higher harmonic content at higher power levels. [Elecraft] (K3) Headst/Mic
An alternative K3 headset in place of the Yamaha CM500, which appears to be unobtainable in Europe, is the Koss SB45. I just bought one of these from an internet supplier for 20 pounds (about $30) and it seems quite comfortable and it does have an electret mic element, not a dynamic one. The 3.5mm jacks plug directly into the rear panel Phones and Mic sockets. MAIN MENU: MIC SEL is set for RPL with bias ON. I have the MAIN MENU: TX EQ set for a rising characteristic (0,0,0,+3,+6,+9,+12,+15dB) and it sounds just great in the monitor. However on-air tests may show that a bass cut with flat characteristic (-16,-16,-6,0dB the rest) per K9YC recommendation may be better. 73 Tom G3OLB __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3 - SPKR+PH Fault
Hello Paul, I have had a similar fault. Occasionaly at switch-on, there is no audio from the speakers. If I insert and remove the phones into the front jack, the audio returns. I would still like to fix the front phone socket issue as it is much more convenient for me to revert to Speaker from that position. [Elecraft] K3 Wish List - XIT tell-tale
I guess Elecraft are now beyond wanting to make relatively minor changes to the K3 as it is now a mature product, but how about this? On two occasions recently I have been in QSO with a weak distant station on 160 or 80 and a very loud EU has come up on the same frequency with a QRL? On my reply of 'R Pse QSY' the other station ignores me and begins a long and loud CQ thus wiping out the one I'm trying to work. Both times I established that the interfering station was using a K3 and had inadvertently left the 'XIT' function on, thus transmitting on a different frequency to that he was listening on. The yellow 'delta f' tell-tale LED is there to tell you that either the RIT or XIT function is on, but if you are already using the RIT function, there is nothing to tell you that XIT is also on. Would it be a simple firmware mod to make the lamp flash on and off when XIT is active? 73 Tom G3OLB __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] [K3] ERR PL1 has shown up
Jim, Don't know if you have solved this problem yet but it was one of the symptoms I was getting, amongst a lot of others, back a few months ago. Turned out to be corrosion on the front panel connectors - my shack gets cold and damp in the winter. I removed the front panel assembly, cleaned the connector contacts with some switch cleaner fluid, applied some electrical contact lubricant called 'Contralube', re-assembled and all has been well since then. An added advantage is that the lubricant stuff allows the connectors to mate and un-mate (?) much more easily and I no longer need a screw-driver/lever, in the slot provided, to remove the front panel assembly. 73 Tom G3OLB Date: Mon, 1 Aug 2011 21:11:09 -0400 From: Jim Spears n...@cox.net Subject: [Elecraft] [K3] ERR PL1 has shown up To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Cc: 'Gary Surrency' supp...@elecraft.com Message-ID: 003801cc50b1$104da820$30e8f860$@net Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Yesterday I got an ERR PL1 when changing to 12m. [Elecraft] Portable Wire Antenna Weight
A warning.be careful using a golf ball to put your antenna over a tree. I did the same thing about 15 years ago, except I drilled the golf ball and tied braided nylon cord through it. Inevitably the ball got stuck in the 'V' of a branch so I heaved on it, winding the cord round a piece of wood to give me more grip on it. That cord must have had a breaking strain of more than 300lbs and when the ball broke free, I literally shot myself in the foot, breaking several bones. It could have been even nastier if it had hit me about 3' higher! I can still hear the staff at the Accident Emergency Department sniggering when I told them I had been shot by a golf ball. My XYL had to drive me to work for the next 6 weeks while my foot was plastered up, bless her! These days I use a catapult and a lead weight which could be even more dangerous, but I use monofilament and am very, very careful if I have to pull the line back. Do it slowly and, with luck, the weight won't wind the line round a branch. 73 Tom G3OLB __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K£ - Multiple faults
I'm posting some detail of this long saga of faults on my K3 and the eventual solution, in the hope that it may help others with similar problems. My K3/100 S/No 01434 is just about 3 years old now and about a year ago intermittently started showing faults. At switch-on 'ERR BP1', 'ERR LPF' and a long string of error messages would be displayed as the MENU button was pushed. It would then return to normal operation except power output was limited to 12 watts. After a month or two, additional faults began to occur, 'HI RFI' displayed with no antenna connected and before transmitting. Internal relay clicking in time with keying, even when no separate receive antenna connected. High SWR indication on K3 bar-graph even with 50 ohm dummy load and perfect SWR on external meter. Transmit function inhibited. Uncalled for output power reduction from 100 W to 10 W during transmission. 'ERR PL2' (PLL1 *00, PLL2 *00) and neither Rx working. 'ERR KEY'. Power on/off button not working. Tx gain calibration showing gain errors and slow to reach 10 W and 100W. 'HI TEMP' displayed at switch-on and before transmitting. 'ERR I01' and no RF output when keyed. All these faults occurred regularly at different times over the last 12 months, interspersed with periods of no faults. The rig became quite unreliable, failing in the middle of a contest several times, and finally becoming virtually unusable. During this time I dis-assembled the rig, removing all the sub-modules from the main RF board, cleaned the connectors and re-assembled, 3 or 4 times. The fault appeared to be temperature dependant so I used a freezer aerosol on each section of each board without being able to replicate the faults. Putting the whole rig in the 'fridge at -1C caused the faults to re-appear (had to move the beer to make room for it). All calibration procedures were repeated as per the handbook. A month ago, John G3PQA kindly loaned me his K3 front panel along with some connector lubricant called Contralube 770. This was installed and the rig used for 2 or 3 weeks with no repetition of the faults even at low temperatures. My front panel has now been re-installed, using the connector lubricant on the 4 connectors and for about 2 weeks there has been no repetition of the problems. My shack is in an insulated room in a stable block and the temperature does get below zero at times and I guess the humidity must get high as well. The 4 front panel connectors on my K3 are not gold flashed like some of the other modules and I can only assume that I had a connector pin oxidisation problem. So if anyone else has a series of faults like this, remove the front panel, clean the connectors and apply some of this special connector lubricant. An added advantage is that the front panel can now be removed using just finger and thumb, no screwdriver needed as a lever. I have to say that throughout this saga, Elecraft post-warranty support has been superb, suuplying replacement modules and plenty of advice from Gary Surrency. Wayne even wrote some special FW with extra timing delays built in to try and resolve the issues. Despite all this, I remain convinced that the K3 is the best transceiver on the market. 73 Tom G3OLB __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3: Voice Fast Monitor
As the person, or one of them, who asked for the Voice Tx Fast Monitor facility which has been included in V.4.22, can I say 'thanks' to Wayne Lyle for this new feature? It allows sidetone monitoring of transmitted audio without the somewhat disconcerting delay, albeit without hearing any compression. If you want to hear the level of compression, a touch of one of the mic controls while you are transmitting changes the sidetone over to monitoring the true transmitted audio. Also the APF is going to be great for pulling out those weak topband signals. All I need now is a fix so the K3 will operate at temperatures below 15C, then I can get rid of the 100 watt tubular heater which burns continually underneath it! 73 Tom G3OLB __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] (Elecraft K3) KDVR
Re-the current thread on using the KDVR for checking transmitted audio: When using SSB I like to monitor my audio sidetone in my phones, probably because, like most hams, I like the sound of my own voice! I recognise that this may not be a true reproduction of the outgoing signal, but it does give me an idea of the level of residual back ground noise from fans, dog barking, wife yelling at me to get and do something useful and so on. That way I can make adjustments to the mike gain and compressor gain if neccessary. The trouble is that the K3 produces a slight processing delay between my speech and the sidetone, which I find most disconcerting. I usually end up using my old TS-850 for 'phone instead of the K3 because of this. Lyle, Thanks for the explanation. As with most hams, I like the sound of my own voice (!) and listening to a delayed version of my own voice on phones during a long contest, I find quite wearing. Would it be possible to menu-select the monitor output prior to any of the processing you mention? I've reverted to using my dear old TS-850 for phone operation because of this problem. 73 Tom G3OLB Lyle wrote: The delay is due to: audio input anti-aliasing filter in the A to D, TX AF filtering, phase shift network, interpolation filter (conversion from 12 kHz sampling rate to 48 kHz sampling rate) , post-IF clipper filter, decimation filter (conversion from 48 kHz sampling rate to 12 kHz sampling rate), reconstruction filter (part of the D to A). We thought it best to allow you to hear the effects of the IF signal processing, so delays are unavoidable. Most people do not notice as the K3 uses filters optimized to minimize delays. Note that Tx EQ adds zero additional delay. Like the Rx EQ, the Tx EQ just adds more constraints to the AF FIR filter generator. [Elecraft] Elecraft Support
I would, once again, like to applaud Gary Surrency at Elecraft K3 Support for his patience and speed of response in helping me install a firmware fix yesterday. [Elecraft] K3/100 kit
If you don't like magnetic screw drivers, use a small piece of 'Blue Tack' on the tip of the driver to hold your screw. [Elecraft] K3 - Faulty VFO B encoder
Greg It's a faulty encoder - I had two of them go bad with these same symptoms. Talk to the guys at supp...@elecraft.com and they will replace it. 73 Tom G3OLB I have a K3 SN 1553 When I first power up the K3 the VFO B works correctly. After about 1 minute it starts to get eratic and then stops working completly. I have re-loaded the latest (non Beta) Firmware. I checked to to see that the VFO B encoder is properly seated to the connector. Seems like a temperature related problem. FP temp is normal 27 C Has anyone seen a similar problem or have any hints where to start troubleshooting? Thanks,? [Elecraft] K3: 60 metre coverage in UK
I think this subject has been covered before - so apologies for missing the reply: The UK allocated 60 metre channels extend down to 5.2585 MHz but my K3 will not transmit below 5.330 MHz and VFO B displays 'END'. [Elecraft] K3: Loss of VFO B Control
Rick Make sure you remove the screw from the 2D fastner at the lower right hand side of the panel - see Assembly Manual page 37, Fig 51. Having done it many times, I'm now an expert at removing/replacing the front panel and it only take a few minutes! 73 Tom G3OLB Rick, N6CY, asked: ...has anyone come up with a better solution for separating the front panel from the main radio, being kind to the paint job? I haven't ding'ed it yet after four attach/remove cycles, but the two insert screwdriver here slots just aren't cutting it for me! ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 Loss of VFO B control
Jerry I have had 2 failed encoders and am waiting for the second replacement. In my case, it was not due to any shorts occurring although I believe Elecraft are now advising the fitting of an adhesive rubber insulating pad behind VFO B encoder. Looks like they had a bad batch from the manufacturer, Bourns. Tom G3OLB I had a bad encoder assembly in the K3 I assembled recently - I proved it by swapping A and B encoders and observing the problem switch with it. Elecraft shipped me a new one which fixed it (after much sweat replacing it - that front panel removal is a PITA). I suspect Elecraft is not checking the encoders before shipping them to us. [Elecraft] K3: Removing front panel
But DO remember to remove the screw(s) from the 2D connector on lower LHS. Tom G3OLB It would be interesting to me to see somebody prying off the front panel assembly in video form. It's an easy job Brian. Just use a thin screwdriver placed as indicated in the instructions. Go back and forth between the slots on each side, prying it loose a little bit further each time. The connector pins are clearly visible so you can see the progress of the panel coming off. 3-4X on each slot and she's loose. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Elecraft antennas in trees
Another warning! A few years ago I used a catapult and a drilled golf ball with some braided nylon line over an oak tree. When it became stuck in a branch, I wound the line round a piece of wood and gave it my full weight to release it. The end result? I literally shot myself in the foot, breaking several small bones and was on crutches for 4 weeks. The braided line probably had a breaking strain of at least 300lb so I had devised a pretty effective self-destruction machine. I'm just glad it didn't hit me a few feet higher! The funniest part was trying to explain to the guy in the Accident Emergency Department how I broke my foot with a golf ball and then listening to his sniggers as he told the story to his colleagues. These days I use a lead fishing weight with some fluorescent mono-filament fishing line. I can get it to 60 feet plus, but if it gets stuck, I pull back very, very slowly to prevent it winding around a branch. Be careful!
