Re: [Elecraft] Parts swappers -- is this a real "thing"

2021-10-29 Thread Carl Jón Denbow
Tony: I think it’s just an excuse that some hams use for saying they won’t
accept returns. I’m sure it’s happened on rare occasions, but I’ve bought and
sold a lot gear on qth.com, and a few other places, over the years and I’ve
found the vast majority of hams to be honest. I have dealt with a few
scammers, but that’s a different issue. They are invariably non-hams who are
posing as hams. In all the time I’ve engaged in online trading of ham gear,
I’ve only run into one dishonest ham, but he seemed to be suffering from some
kind of mental disorder. If you insist on being paid via PayPal you’ll be
protected. That’s my two cents worth. — 73 de Carl

[Elecraft] Strange behavior of K3 on FT8

2021-06-19 Thread Carl-N8VZ
Dear OM or YL: Today I did a successful POTA activation using my K3. I
usually use a smaller, lower wattage rig, but decided recently to use the K3
portable. I've used the K3 for POTA activation three times before this week
-- but all on SSB. Today, I used FT8. I first was on 20M and everything
was quite normal. Then I switched to 30M, and I was hearing nothing and
friend who I was texting who lives fairly close to the park wasn't seeing my
CQs. I had the MODE set to DATA. The friend suggested I switch to USB
mode, and lo and below I started seeing signals on my screen and completed
several QSOs. I had used DATA mode on 20M and it worked FB. I also later
used DATA mode on 40M. Why didn't DATA mode work on 30M? Is there some
setting where I have to declare USB or LSB for each band separately for DATA
mode? All of this seems very strange to me. I used my K3 before for data
modes in the shack, and I don't recall this issue. Any suggestions would be
greatly appreciated. -- 73 de Carl N8VZ

[Elecraft] K2 #7997 is alive

2021-05-07 Thread Carl Clawson
I'm 20 years late to the game but I finally built a K2. What a satisfying
project to build, and a delightful rig to operate. It doesn't have all the
performance and features of my fully-updated K3, but it's a great little
radio nonetheless.

I finished the final alignment and test Tuesday and have used it a couple
evenings now.

Now to build the SSB adapter and the 100 W amp.

[Elecraft] Another way to pass time waiting for my K4 - building a K2

2021-04-13 Thread Carl Clawson
I was late getting in the queue -- I ordered it after I flew home on the
Tuesday after Dayton 2019. It'll be interesting to see when it comes and
what serial number I get.

So I bought a K2 and am now building it. I was on the verge of doing that
in 2007 when the K3 was announced so I built the K3 instead. The K2's time
has finally come. I just got to the first test stage.

I don't know what I'll do with it once it's built. Sell it, keep it as a
loaner for new HF ops in one of my clubs, who knows?

I love the smell of rosin in the morning.

[Elecraft] KPA1500 with a Yaesu FTdx101D

I’m trying to get the KPA1500 utility to work with my Windows 10 PC and my

I have downloaded the FTDI driver, run setup, and received a message saying the
driver is on my PC.
But when I run the utility it only sees COM3 and COM4, ports provided by a
Yaesu driver for WSJT-X and fldigi.
Obviously it cannot connect to these ports. I expected to see a port from the
FTDI driver install.
Any help would be appreciated.

Bob,

In the newer firmware, it's a menu setting. I don't remember what it is,
(Radio not accessible right now), but the firmware notes via the utility
should tell you.

Now I can't. A fast press of Sub brings up SUB. A long press brings up

Mind you, since I frequently use WSJT-x in split-mode, maybe I really
DON'T want the two Vfo's to track.

My two cents: FT8 is a bit more than using a computer to make contacts. Believe

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 power per frequency bin

2020-06-02 Thread Carl Clawson
Regardless of how it would have to be implemented, Hank hit the nail
squarely on the head here. As I go up and down the band (especially low
bands where the antennas are skinny and every increment of power is to be
treasured) I have to either dial back my power when the KPA ATU is working
harder, or accept lowered power on those frequencies where the ATU is
loafing.

It may be too late for the K3, but Elecraft software guys, please figure
out how to make the K4 and KPA1500 talk to each other and make this happen.

Your customers will appreciate it!

It’s power dependent. Loud at full power, hum reduces as power is lowered. Not

[Elecraft] KPA3 in K3S mostly not working

2020-02-03 Thread Carl Yaffey
When I get my K4 (hopefully May . . .), I currently plan to send in my K3S for
repair. I have already talked with support.
The symptoms are:
1) In transmit mode, no power when raising the power above 11 watts. This
happens about 90% of the time. So the 100w amp is not totally gone.
2) In receive mode, sound drops considerably when raising the power above 11
watts. This is, of course, coincident with the 100w amp failing.
I haven’t found anything that causes the amp to come and go. Seems random. In
can be OK while sending and the suddenly fail.
Also, the transmit calibration fails.

Anyone have this problem? Is there a “fix” without sending in the rig?

Re: [Elecraft] Wayne and his company...

2019-12-15 Thread carl
Let me add that both Wayne and Eric are men of great integrity, and have
developed a "corporate culture" that places honesty as a key component.

I had a situation a few years ago that demonstrates this. I had a piece of
Elecraft gear that was having serious problems but was out of warranty. It
had a long track record of problems going back several years. This is a
very convoluted and unusual history that I will refrain from going into.

I wanted to send the unit back in and have it fixed and asked that it be
treated as a warranty repair. I emailed Wayne and Eric directly (something
you can't do at most other ham radio companies), and in a long email related
the very long and sordid history of this piece of equipment, with proper
documentation. They agreed to my request. I sent the equipment back to the
mother ship. Now, comes the truly amazing part of the story, when the tech
examined the equipment he noted not a bad part, but two "missing parts."
This was a factory assembled unit! Now, how many companies would admit that
they had shipped a unit with "missing parts." They might report that in an
internal memo, but in a message to the customer? I was impressed! Once
these missing parts were installed (two resistors, if I remember correctly),
the unit has worked flawless since.

Last year at Dayton I personally commended Wayne for how this was handled.
He just kind of shrugged it off as "no big deal." Well, it was a big deal
to me, and made me an Elecraft customer for life!

73,

Carl
N8VZ

P.S. I should add that I'm sure that it's a very rare occurrence that
Elecraft ships gear with "missing parts," but it's reassuring that when it
happens, they'll admit to it, and make it right!

As I sit on the road I watch the mail about Wayne... Then you have to think
of the quiet one .. Eric - WA6HHQ, who also is the other intense one.
Those lead the team to create the goodies ... Wait .. they are the CEO's,
and they keep track of the list and the pulse of Amateur Radio.
And have a personal life .. read the list ... and make sure they cover any
issues..

And what was the last time any other leaders kept track of their company
this close..

Re: [Elecraft] K4 RX routing?

2019-11-18 Thread Carl Clawson
Further on this:

Please include a comprehensive description of RX antenna routing in the K4
manual. I could never understand the K3 with much confidence until I read
Fred Cady's KE7X (SK) book, and sadly Fred will not be writing a K4 book.
Just try figuring out what "RX Ant Out" does by reading the K3 manual. You
can GUESS what it does but a manual shouldn't leave you guessing.

Re: [Elecraft] QRP FD KX2 Batteries & FT8 Report

Thanks, Bob. Useful information on the current releases.

I believe you meant to say that FT8 is 15 seconds between overs and FT4 is
about 8 seconds. At least that’s what Joe Taylor K1JT said at the Flex Radio
Banquet was the plan for FT4. Sounds like an exciting contest mode.

Re: [Elecraft] QRP FD KX2 Batteries & FT8 Report

2019-06-25 Thread Carl Jón Denbow
Thanks, Gentlemen. I guess I must not have the latest version of WSJT-X, or I
somehow missed that feature. I do have a 2.x version. I wish I had known
about that because I was running a low power 1B station on SSB with a very
compromised antenna system and would have done much better on FT8. Maybe I can
try it out for Winter FD.

When I read that thread about all the hoops those guys were going through it
discouraged me from pursuing that option. I’m kind of angry at myself at this
point for not pursuing it more diligently!

Re: [Elecraft] QRP FD KX2 Batteries & FT8 Report

2019-06-25 Thread Carl Jón Denbow
Peter,

I am curious how you got FT8 to do the proper FD exchange? I read a post where
some hams were discussing this and it sounded very difficult and complex, so I
decided against trying it. One guy actually had two FT8 programs running
simultaneously, with one connected to HRD, which somehow enabled him to do the
proper exchange. His description made absolutely no sense to me, so though I’m
an experienced FT8 op, I decided to forgo FT8 for this FD. I’m curious how you
accomplished this feat!

According to what I was told, the Greene County Fair Board has agreed to put in
air conditioning in the three main buildings if the the Hamvention folks will

Re: [Elecraft] My "MFJ Posting"

2019-04-10 Thread Carl Jón Denbow
Since when did nationality = race? Why do you assume Ken’s comment was based
on how Martin looks? He may have never seen a photo of him. I certainly
haven’t, that I can recall. His name sounds like it’s Asian. Is his ethnicity
Chinese, Japanese, Korean? I have no idea. Ken may have assumed, I gather
incorrectly, that he was an immigrant from one of those nations. Each of those
nations certainly have different cultures, with different sets of cultural
norms. Ken made a very awkward statement. Not one I would make. But, I think
branding it as racism is more in the eye of the beholder then the pen of the
author. 73 de Carl N8VZ

Re: [Elecraft] My "MFJ Posting"

2019-04-10 Thread Carl Jón Denbow
What gets me is that Ken was not commenting on a race but a culture. He was
completely wrong in his assessment of the culture to which the head of MFJ
belonged, but that’s another issue. It should not have been implied he was a
racist for that comment. An apology is due, IMHO. The word “racist” is thrown
around too frequently today in ways that are on the verge of rendering the word
meaningless. At that point real racists take cover under the umbrella thus
created by the misuse of the term. That’s very unfortunate, because real
racism is hideous and needs to be forcefully countered and confronted
everywhere it raises its ugly head.

Re: [Elecraft] KFL3C-400 offset?

2019-02-27 Thread Carl Jón Denbow
To put a wrapper on this thread: I ended up ordering two 400Hz filter direct
from Inrad. They had them clearly marked as eight pole and said they were
mount-compatible with the K3. I had email exchanges with K3 support, most of
which were helpful, but the question about a KFL3C-400 eight-pole filter went
unanswered. They seem to have a problem in this area. Not exactly sure why.
Uncharacteristic. So, I have two 6-pole 400Hz filters for sale! You can find
an ad for them on qth.com:

2019-02-23 Thread Carl Jón Denbow
Bill,

Thanks for your response. This filter, unlike the others, is exposed and there
are six crystal cans. Does this mean it’s a five-pole? I was sure I ordered
an eight-pole filter? When I do a search on the KFL3C-400 everything I see
indicates it’s an eight-pole filter. Are there two types of KFL3C-400 filters?
As you can see I’m still confused.

I’m assembling a KRX3 second receiver for my K3. One of the filters I’m
installing is a KFL3C-400. When I ordered it, the order form said it was an
8-pole filter. I purposely only ordered 8-pole filters. It was my
understanding that 8-pole filters have no offsets to worry about. Why,
then, does the KFL3C-400 have an offset (-0.79) listed on the filter when
the others do not? I’m confused. Can someone clarify this for me? 73 de

[Elecraft] RIT switch number?

2019-02-22 Thread Carl

Mark,

The RIT SW# is SWT47;

There is also a RIT command, RT

RT (RIT Control; GET/SET)
SET/RSP format: RTn; where n is 0 (RIT OFF) or 1 (RIT ON). RIT is
disabled in QRQ CW mode.

There are a few others, see page 23 of the programmer's manual Vers. G3.

[Elecraft] K3 Speaker Audio Quit

2019-01-13 Thread Carl

Jim,

Check this, you could have bumped the "1" button!

line"> the CONFIG:SPKR+PH menu
entry. Tap ‘1’ on the numeric keypad until you see PH.R SW– . The minus
sign (-)indicates inverted switch
logic for the jack for the newer KIO3 audio board. Exit the menu and
re-save your configuration using K3 Utility.

[Elecraft] K3 for sale

2019-01-13 Thread Carl
I have decided to sell one of my K3's. So there is no confusion, it is a
K3, late 3000 serial number. It is a 100w kit. Options include standard
2.7k filter, KDVR3 voice recorder, KXV3A interface (RX antenna, IF out
and Xverter ), KAT3 antenna tuner (adds 2nd antenna input), power cable,
and a spare KSYN3 board so a second receiver can be added. A new second
receiver will come with an upgraded Synth board, and both synth boards
need to be the same. You could add the new board for $280, or use the
old ones until you wanted to upgrade. It also has the mod to be able to
power a K-Pod from the front panel jack. Of course, spiral bound manual
included, along with assembly instruction manual. The radio is in
excellent like new condition. Hardly a scratch on the case. Lightly used
and well taken care of, non smoking and pet free home. This would be a
great starting point for someone looking for a radio to build up as they
wanted.I'm asking $2000 shipped in the US. I could meet locally,
(Burlington, Vt. area) and adjust the price.

Please contact off list: AB1DD @ ARRL.net. (adjust the spaces!).

Re: [Elecraft] Ideas for an FT8 Radio

2019-01-02 Thread Carl J. Denbow
While it's legal to run maximum power on FT8, or any other weak signal
mode, it's certainly not in the spirit of the weak signal mode ethos
Most weak-signal mode enthusiasts pride themselves on the worldwide
contacts they can make with low wattage.  Many feel that 100 watts is
QRO on these modes. Personally, I usually run about 35 watts, but I've
had QSOs with stations in far-flung regions running power in the
milliwatt range with a dipole up 20 feet.  That's the real attraction of
these modes to many. And, until the advent of FT8, you heard very few
stations running more than 100 watts on these modes.  FT8 seems to have
attracted a whole different crowd.  Some of these, I think, view FT8 as
a "the new RTTY" and operate according to the accepted operating
procedures of that mode.  I view this trend as very unfortunate.

Re: [Elecraft] [FS] KX3

2019-01-01 Thread Carl Jón Denbow
I used to think the same way. I would say simply, “price includes shipping to
any US address.” Then I sold a Kenwood rig to a ham in Hawai’i and the
shipping via USPS was astronomical. It was too big for a flat rate box. And,
I’m not actually sure the flat rate to Hawai’i is the same as to CONUS. At any
rate, to be safe I now say “price includes shipping to CONUS.” I’ll negotiate
individually with any Alaskan, Puerto Rican, or Hawai’ian potential buyer.

Re: [Elecraft] Shipping high value items by UPS

2018-09-25 Thread Carl Jón Denbow
Never had a problem like that at UPS, and I’ve shipped many high value items
with them. I did have a problem like that, but not as severe, at FedEx once.
They opened the box because I said the value was about $4000.00. They had to
insure the packing was sufficient. I’ve avoided them for high-value items ever
since. 73 de Carl
