Re: [Elecraft] Can the K3 make power without activating Key Out?

2021-05-31 Thread ke9uw
That inhibit is what I was always nervous about. I always put the KPA500 on
standby and then push TUNE on the K3 and then push TUNE on the KAT500.
Otherwise it's kind of scary...pushing TUNE first on the K3 puts high power
out on the KPA500. I guess if I pushed TUNE then on the KAT500, the KPA500
would drop out?
So I guess the correct sequence would be to press TUNE on the KAT500 and
then push TUNE on the K3 and the KPA500 would not KEY. Correct?
Why not have pushing TUNE on the KAT500 initiate the whole sequence...unkey
the KPA, start the TUNE on the K3 and tune?

[Elecraft] Dummy Load with integral digital wattmeter

2021-04-30 Thread ke9uw
I have recently built a GRPoMeter which has a 16 Watt dummy load with a
digital SWR/Wattmeter in it. It’s great...but only reads up to about 14
Watts.
I would like a similar dummy load meter with a digital meter that reads say
0-10, 0-100, and 0-1000 watts full scale. I like and use the Elecraft 500
watt amp and tuner, so 1000 watts full scale would be perfect..
Too much to ask for. 0-2000 would be acceptable if it had the 3 ranges.
Definitely not single range analog meters like MFJ and Palstar have
Anyone know of a product like this?

Re: [Elecraft] Speaker upgrade

2021-04-24 Thread ke9uw
I bought a couple of 6X9 Jensen speakers with whizzer cones at Best Buy years
ago along with some rectangular fuzzy boxes that are designed to mount them.
These speakers used to be the ones that were the rear seat speaker in the GM
cars in the 60's. They sound great and I use them wired as stereo on the K3.
Turning the AFX on sounds great too.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 upgrade notes not found on Elecraft site...

2021-02-28 Thread ke9uw
That’s an informative link. But what is missing from the upgrade firmware
listings is the history of the upgrades. And they are not shown in the area
where you buy the upgrade chip. On the K3, the latest firmware upgrade lists
all the upgrade information from the beginning. Not so on the K2 upgrades.
Only the last firmware upgrade lists the details for that upgrade. And it’s
not easy to find...I forget where I saw it as I write this.

Re: [Elecraft] Difference between a K3 and a K3S

2021-01-26 Thread ke9uw
I bought a K3S and then I upgraded my #4XXX K3 which has two receivers with
every upgrade that Elecraft offered. It was mostly just a fun project, but
it's also a backup for the shack. One thing though, I swapped all the
filters and just put the 2.7KHz ones I got with the K3S in the K3. And I
also swapped the digital voice recorder. So I was trying to be somewhat
frugal.

[Elecraft] Installing KBPF3MDKT MOD FOR LOW FREQ CUTOFF

2018-12-09 Thread ke9uw
The Elecraft site states the new Synthesizer KSYN3A is required to modify the
original KBPF3 to KBPF3A specifications.
However, Fred Cady's book, "Upgrading the Elecraft K3 with K3s Components"
does not make this requirement for the KBPF3 to 3A modification.

Why does Elecraft require the KSYN3A and Fred Cady not require it for this
band pass filter mod?
Anybody have insight on this?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 internal connectors

2018-03-23 Thread ke9uw
My K3 was purchased in 2010 which seems to avoid most of the early required
mods.

The optional mods that came after 2010 are:

the 12vdc current update at the rear panel,
the additional speaker audio output protection,
the additional bandwidth capacitor from 100KHz to 500KHz (which requires the
new synthesizers as well),
the fan noise additional filter capacitor,
the new synthesizers which requires a mod to the KREF3 (a single resistor)
to increase it's output,
the new USB Sound and Comm port capability,
Also a resistor to increase the output of the 6P6C connector on the front
bottom of the K3 to power the K POD.
None of this is mandatory. The cost of these updates would cost about $1100
in parts kits.

recorded and kept tract of all the mods and updated parts. I ordered and set
aside crystals, firmware (didn't even use one of the chip sets) and other
mod kits. I edited the assembly instructions as time went along and in about
2010, I got the kit and parts out, refreshed my understand of the assembly

worked perfectly. I have had opportunities to sell it, but somehow it seems

Is it possible you need the KPAIO3MDKT? This cures some issues with electrical
fan noise getting into the transmit signal under some conditions after the
KSYN3A is installed in all K3 radios and K3S radios before serial (about) 10730.

Re: [Elecraft] New Firmware (k3fw5r57) Causes Odd Sound

2017-02-23 Thread ke9uw
I set the TX GATE to ON 10 and the complaints have been eliminated...although
one fellow is still straining to hear something. I have always had the TX
GATE set to OFF 0 and have over the years gotten complaints of almost
imperceptible "ghosts on the audio", and then this "tiny rattle". Maybe I
always needed to have the TX GATE set to ON. I don't have any noise in the
room, fans or anything, kind of wondered about magnetic noise in the Shure
57 mic from all these monitors, wifi, etc. around here that you can't hear
with human ears.

Re: [Elecraft] New Firmware (k3fw5r57) Causes Odd Sound

2017-02-22 Thread ke9uw
To clarify, the issue is there with r57 and not there with r53. I did restore
the configuration of the rig to a previous configuration which was free of
the anomaly, just to reload any parameters that might have changed with the
install of r57, but that did not help.
So...since it's so small and hard to notice by the casual, I won't worry
about it, but thought that it was worth mentioning as an unwanted artifact
of r57. And I don't know which portion of the newest firmware is causing it,
the MCU, FPF, or DSP1,2.

Re: [Elecraft] New Firmware (k3fw5r57) Causes Odd Sound

2017-02-22 Thread ke9uw
The issue went away when I reloaded r53 firmware and came back with r57. I
emphasize that the effect is very small and would be missed by most
listeners except for some very critical listeners. One friend said it
sounded like a clatter mechanical noise rather than a fan. Once you are
aware of it, you hear it routinely. It's not a deal breaker, just an anomaly
that might be explained and eliminated by the firmware guys.

[Elecraft] New Firmware (k3fw5r57) Causes Odd Sound

2017-02-22 Thread ke9uw
I updated from the r35 to r57 firmware and received reports of an almost
imperceptible but noticeable zizzy sound when I quit talking and before the
vox drops out on 80M sideband. The listeners say it sounds like a fan in the
background, but I have no fans or noise in the room.
I reloaded the r35 and the issue was gone.
Anybody have any ideas? Elecraft?

Well...the whole idea of the SVGA option is to have a simple big screen. I'm
using an ACER S202HL monitor. 20 inch. Works well...no computer, sound card,
dodads, or other stuff involved. Two wires, power and video cable.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S audio board for K3 upgrade?

2016-03-22 Thread ke9uw
I had a 480 and did not care for the sort of pinched up audio compared to say
the 850.
I am using a couple of 6 by 9 speakers in enclosures on the K3, one on each
side of the stereo and the sound is just fine. As they say, opinions vary
and have so many variables like speakers, what/how/where you operate,
physical hearing anomalies, etc. that audio reviews are just about useless.

I have a pair of Jensen 6 by 9 speakers each one in one of those rectangular

but the ones with those "whizzer" cones. Great for speech.

No, it's because Joe (and I) know microphones quite well, and we know
what good stuff costs. Joe is a retired broadcast engineering manager,
I'm retired from four decades in pro audio, including work as a
recording engineer. I'm also a member of the AES Standards Committee and
the Working Group on Microphones.

otherwise Heil would not be in business.

Heil is in business for the same reason that Bose is in business -- they
spend a lot of money on advertising, and their customers don't know
enough about the product they are selling to know they're being
suckered. In the audio biz, we say of Bose, better sound through
marketing. The same applies to Heil.

When I got back on the air in 2003, I was still very busy running my
audio biz, so I bought a used K2/100, which came with a Heil PTT mic
(MH2). I opened it up and found an inexpensive electret capsule that
couldn't have cost more than a buck or two wedged into an opening with a
piece of foam behind it.

Re: [Elecraft] KBPF3 upgrade kit and instructions [Corrected]

2015-06-25 Thread ke9uw
Hmmm...
Before I order (and I am anxious to order something), I need to sit down and
check several links on the Elecraft site to figure out what I have and what
I can order to upgrade. And check the forum as well.
While the Elecraft folks are just hanging out looking for something to do
:), I long for an interactive link on the Elecraft site that I can just
enter my K3 serial number into and it displays all the upgrades that I could
benefit from and why.

I removed the shorting strap across the entire original RC circuit (2K with .3

It receives good reports now and looks fairly full across the entire 3kHz.

As for the K3, updates will continue to be for both, I think, and it's worth
checking to make sure the K3 doesn't suffer because of the specific K3S
additions or changes...even if the update does not add anything for the K3.

[Elecraft] Odd WWV and K3 frequency issue...

2014-12-17 Thread ke9uw
I have calibrated the TCXO using the WWV and Spot method outlined in the
manual. It also agrees with my HP counter which is good to 10^-10 or so. I
have also done the VCO calibration outlined in the manual which seems to
have completed it to the satisfaction of the K3.
BUT, when I look at WWV on 10.000 MHz, the carrier is down about 70 Hz from
the center point on the P3, and when I switch from USB to LSB, I can hear
the 70 Hz on LSB and cannot hear it on USB of course because it's below my
audio passband on USB. Any idea what causes this anomaly?
Just curious...I probably don't understand the K3's guts as well as I
should.

Re: [Elecraft] Strange K3 KPA500 Issues fixed with a longer coax cable?

2014-11-19 Thread ke9uw
The RF in the shack answer always makes me think that if I put RF in the
shack of someone on the other side of the country, then I surely have RF in
my shack too.
I think the real question is if the RF in the shack, everybody's shack,
getting into something like the mic wiring or it's preamp.
When I read the longer cable response, I thought that it's just a change to
the RF getting into something. If it is more inductance that helps, then
what effect does RF Ferrite clipped onto a short coax have? Just a thought.

I am a ret. EE and years ago I bought a new Drake 2B. When I sent the

issues with them.

I bought a couple refurbished Edgeport 4 port serial to usb converters.
Around $40 to $60 each. They installed, or the Win 8 installed them without

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 TUNER WOES

2014-05-20 Thread ke9uw
Sometimes when the weather changes, the match changes. There was a thread
like this awhile back and it was noted that the different residual
capacitances and inductances when using the KAT500 versus the ATU in the K3
makes a difference in being able to find a match with certain loads. It was
also pointed out by Elecraft that the tuner values in the K3 ATU and the
KAT500 are the same.
Changing the length of the feedline sounds like a plan.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 #6951 It's Alive!

2014-05-19 Thread ke9uw
Hi Don,
My kit is #1089 March 2000, but I was responding to a post by kit owner
#6951.
Sorry I said 2M when I meant xverter interface.
I bought these changes and mods in July 2003, but hadn't really gotten much
built by then...
BFOMDKT
VFO ALC/10M mod parts kit
K2 Temperature Compensated PLL Reference Upgrd
K2 MCU and IOC firmware upgrade
K2 Rev A to B upgr parts
2nd Filter Upgrade for the K2
then in October 2009, I bought these mods and upgrades getting ready to
build the rest of the kit...
K2 MCU and IOC firmware upgrade 2.04
KSB2 B/W Upgrade Cap Kit
Matched Filter Crstals (14)
then in later October I bought these options...still planning to re-start
building...
KAT2
K102
Built the K2 by 2011 incorporating all the changes and mods without removing
and resoldering anything...
then I bought KAF2 and KBT2
The K2 works perfectly...
Thanks for the reply and your excellent help on the forums...

Re: [Elecraft] K2 #6951 It's Alive!

2014-05-18 Thread ke9uw
I took about 10 years to finish mine. I started it, put it aside and then saw
lots of mods and so forth, so I noted them and fit them into the
instructions. When I finally got back to it, I didn't have to unsolder
anything to fit the mods in. I did have to toss a firmware chip that had
never been installed in favor of a newer one that I ordered also.
It all worked when done! All the options installed but the 2M and the 100
watts.

Re: [Elecraft] Anti Static Mats

2014-04-09 Thread ke9uw
Hard to figure out what he is trying to prove. Finally on the antistatic mat
issue, his point was that it doesn't affect measurements made with circuits
lying on the mat. I guess I was thinking that he would show us how the mat
is antistatic, as he did with the bags.

Greetings, all.

Dave Jones, who runs the EEVblog, has a few videos relating to anti-static
bags and mats. The first one that talks about anti-static bags is worth
watching. It shows the difference between the common pink anti-static bags
and the silvery static shielding bags. Those pink bags and the related
anti-static chip carriers don't do as much to protect your components as
you might think.

http://www.eevblog.com/2012/03/01/eevblog-250-anti-static-mat-myth/
http://www.eevblog.com/2014/03/02/eevblog-585-lab-bench-esd-matting-upgrade-tagarno-hd-microscope/

The first part of the third video (mainly starting around 2.5 minutes in)
talks about ESD matting that Dave was putting down on his lab benches.

Re: [Elecraft] New KX3 Accessory

2014-04-05 Thread ke9uw
PX3 photo can be found here:
http://www.elecraft.com/manual/PX3%20Data%20Sheet%20rev%20B1a.pdf

I notice that the Elecraft Order site shows the PX3 only, no accessories. I
am wondering about the cables for connecting it to the KX3 pass thru and so
forth. I would assume that there will be cables and I would want to get them
with the PX3 included in the same shipping cost :). Not a big deal, just
sayin'.

Also, I am an accessory guy...I like to look thru the accessories and see
which ones I may ever need.
Listening E guys? Big margin on those items and I like them.

I said one word and the KPA500 went to standby. No red lights. I returned
it to operate and everything worked well. Forgot about that...not a problem,

the KAT500 goes back to the saved tune setup for that frequency.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500

The reason is that the KAT500 has more coarse component values... the values
of capacitance for example are not as fine as on the K3. So the values on
the K3 sometimes cannot be duplicated on the KAT500.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 vs K3 ATU

2013-08-05 Thread ke9uw
The K3 has values of reactance which are smaller in size than the KAT500.
Therefore there are some instances of antenna and frequency where the KAT500
cannot tune and the K3 can. In that case, you could place a reactance on the
feedline to bring the KAT500 into tune. You can find those values since both
tuners display their values when tuned (or are unsatisfactory tuned).

Re: [Elecraft] [KAT500] Help with KeyLine Interrupt on KPA500 (Video)

2012-12-09 Thread ke9uw
From what I read in the manual, although it would be difficult to satisfy in
every way all the non-Elecraft amps, there are some thoughtful safeguards
built into the KAT500 which should help. One that comes to mind is that it
doesn't drop the key line if the power is over a certain amount (29 watts
default). While that would not hurt the KAP500, some other amps would be
damaged if the key line was to be opened when they are producing full power.
The KAT500 manual is on line and addresses the use of other than Elecraft
amps.

Re: [Elecraft] [KAT500] Help with KeyLine Interrupt on KPA500 (Video)

2012-12-08 Thread ke9uw
The PTT is generated by the transceiver. The KAT500 passes it thru to the amp
unless the KAT is tuning a high SWR. The problem is that the amp goes into
fault before the KAT can OPEN the key line. Firmware in the KAT with some
delay is not the answer...it's already too slow for the amp. If there is any
programmable delay in the KAT, then a firmware change might be to speed that
up if possible. But I doubt that it is possible since it's a relay opening
in the KAT which requires some milliseconds.
I'm guessing the only Elecraft solution is to delay the amp's response to
the high SWR so it doesn't Fault giving the KAT time to open the key line.
So the change in firmware we are waiting on is for the KPA amp.
Help me if I'm missing something here.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500

2012-08-21 Thread ke9uw
Umm...
I want one of these but I have an MFJ998 which works well. One thing I like
is seeing the values that it selects for the L network. It seems to have an
almost reliable memory and tunes in a few seconds without a lot of clatter.
Probably the best MFJ item I have ever bought. OT, don't ask me about the 75
amp clean switching power supply that put birdies all up and down 75
meters. I enacted the no-questions-asked return policy on that.
I'll get the KAT500...any chance that it's possible to observe the tuner
values on VFO B on the K3...or the VGA display etc? That would be so nice.
I'm not asking if it's in the works, just if it can be done in future
programming by Elecraft. Any ideas?

[Elecraft] KX1 battery holder screws too short!

2012-06-06 Thread ke9uw
The supplied screws have about 0.1 inches of thread. The battery holders use
up most of that save about one thread to screw into the bottom cover. Not
enough. I would like about 0.15 or 0.16 inches which is what I used. Works
great. Uses all the threads in the bottom cover.
Small issue, but frustrating finding suitable 2-56 screws...any one like to
try finding them at your local Best Hardware store? 4-40, yes, 2-56 no!

[Elecraft] KX1 ATU causes power to drop off...

2012-06-04 Thread ke9uw
I just finished the KX1 kit and without the tuner, power output into a 50 ohm
load is about 10W on 80M, and 4W on 40M, 30M, and 20M using a Bird meter,
50W slug.
However the ATU which seems to work well in all testing, all the relays
click, etc., in TUNE the power starts out at a reading of about 3 watts (40,
30, 20...a watt higher on 80) and falls off in about 2 to 3 seconds to about
.5 watts. The Bird meter shows exactly the same power fall off.
Also the SWR reading in all cases reads 1.0 using the dummy load. So it
seems like something is heating up (don't feel any heat anywhere) and the
power falls off...but it still always reads an SWR of 1.0 when I go out of
TUNE.
When I remove the ATU and install the jumper the power is steady for all
bands (just higher on 80M).

When I activate L0 thru L3 and C1 thru C3, I get a significant change
(normal) in SWR cycling thru L0 thru L3, but cycling thru C1 thru C3, the
SWR seems to just change from 2.0 to 2.1 to 2.0

Not sure what to look at...

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 ATU causes power to drop off...

2012-06-04 Thread ke9uw
Oh and the ATU is in the CAL (bypass) mode. Of course it is in the TUN mode
for the testing of inserting different L and C elements and noting SWR
changes to see that all the elements are working.

[Elecraft] Building 3080 first...then KX1

2012-05-15 Thread ke9uw
Rather than unsolder a number of components by buildingd the KX1 first, I'm
going to build the 3080 and then the KX1 without the removed/subbed
components. I figure if I make no errors, no problems...or is there some by
me unforseen caveat?
I took about 10 years to build the K2...collected all the mods during that
time and incorporated them into the 2000 year vintage K1 which worked when
finished. I had bought two firmwear chips before i ever turned it on the
first time. The KX1 is not as big a job.
Comments?

Re: [Elecraft] KAT-500

2012-03-29 Thread ke9uw
The auto tuner I bought displays the values selected when tuned...the reason
I bought it. I have had some non-tunable portions of bands (low end of 160M)
and with the readout was able to easily identify and supplement the feedline
with a capacitor and tune up. Is there any chance with the KAT500, that the
values could be read out in the future?

[Elecraft] KPA has FAILED...high SWR reported by K3 when amp in Operate

2012-03-14 Thread ke9uw
My KPA500 causes a high SWR showing at the K3 when the amp is in transmit
operate. All else seems to work ok...reloaded firmware...checked
faults...something about power lost without controlled shutdown.

Any ideas? Pin diode?

[Elecraft] KPA500 audio muffled?

2011-11-15 Thread ke9uw
I have gotten a few reports of sounding like my audio is muffled as compared
to running the K3 alone. It is true that with several listeners in different
states, there is not a consensus of opinion on that. Some of the guys think
it sounds just fine, and some say they can hear a slight muffled sound with
the KPA turned on. The point of comparing it to K3 only and K3 with KPA500
is that the mic is not in the equation. The report is clearly that the amp
sounds muffled. Not unreadable, just slightly muffled.
I have a bias current of 0.4A...about the only thing I can think of to
check. I think there was some discussion of setting the bias current here,
but I can't find it again. What is the range of bias current for best
linearity? I don't see any help in the manual.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 audio muffled?

2011-11-15 Thread ke9uw
Oh and my HV starts out at about 81 vdc and drops to about 63 vdc at 400
watts out...that is about where I run it with vox ssb.
I did just change to 240vac input which results in 81 vdc and drops to 70
vdc at 400 watts, but I haven't gotten any reviews on that...just did it to
see. Bias still at about 0.4 A.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 audio muffled?

2011-11-15 Thread ke9uw
Thanks Eric on the voltage being normal. I thought I'd change things to
possibly get some more data on what it is not, and at least keep the pilot
lights on the 120vac strip from blinking slightly.
There was also a comment on my email (but hasn't appeared here) that I
should look into RF getting into my mic input. I am doing that and I know
that I have some RF floating around here having gotten into the pc monitor,
etc. I like that as a possibility although these critics I mentioned are
very good at recognizing RF in the audio. But maybe just a tad can produce
the results they seem to have noticed. And the correlation with higher power
is obvious.
I think there is also some transistors just don't sound good...get
yourself a four by one and do some real QRO. I am aware of that bias as
well.
I really like this KPA500 amp.
