Re: [Elecraft] Can the K3 make power without activating Key Out?
That inhibit is what I was always nervous about. I always put the KPA500 on standby and then push TUNE on the K3 and then push TUNE on the KAT500. Otherwise it's kind of scary...pushing TUNE first on the K3 puts high power out on the KPA500. I guess if I pushed TUNE then on the KAT500, the KPA500 would drop out? So I guess the correct sequence would be to press TUNE on the KAT500 and then push TUNE on the K3 and the KPA500 would not KEY. Correct? Why not have pushing TUNE on the KAT500 initiate the whole sequence...unkey the KPA, start the TUNE on the K3 and tune? - Chuck, KE9UW -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] Dummy Load with integral digital wattmeter
I have recently built a GRPoMeter which has a 16 Watt dummy load with a digital SWR/Wattmeter in it. It’s great...but only reads up to about 14 Watts. I would like a similar dummy load meter with a digital meter that reads say 0-10, 0-100, and 0-1000 watts full scale. I like and use the Elecraft 500 watt amp and tuner, so 1000 watts full scale would be perfect.. Too much to ask for. 0-2000 would be acceptable if it had the 3 ranges. Definitely not single range analog meters like MFJ and Palstar have Anyone know of a product like this? Re: [Elecraft] Speaker upgrade
I bought a couple of 6X9 Jensen speakers with whizzer cones at Best Buy years ago along with some rectangular fuzzy boxes that are designed to mount them. Re: [Elecraft] K2 upgrade notes not found on Elecraft site...
That’s an informative link. But what is missing from the upgrade firmware listings is the history of the upgrades. And they are not shown in the area where you buy the upgrade chip. On the K3, the latest firmware upgrade lists all the upgrade information from the beginning. Not so on the K2 upgrades. Only the last firmware upgrade lists the details for that upgrade. Re: [Elecraft] Difference between a K3 and a K3S
I bought a K3S and then I upgraded my #4XXX K3 which has two receivers with every upgrade that Elecraft offered. It was mostly just a fun project, but it's also a backup for the shack. One thing though, I swapped all the filters and just put the 2.7KHz ones I got with the K3S in the K3. And I also swapped the digital voice recorder. [Elecraft] Installing KBPF3MDKT MOD FOR LOW FREQ CUTOFF
The Elecraft site states the new Synthesizer KSYN3A is required to modify the original KBPF3 to KBPF3A specifications. Re: [Elecraft] K3 internal connectors
My K3 was purchased in 2010 which seems to avoid most of the early required mods. The optional mods that came after 2010 are: the 12vdc current update at the rear panel, the additional speaker audio output protection, the additional bandwidth capacitor from 100KHz to 500KHz (which requires the new synthesizers as well), the fan noise additional filter capacitor, the new synthesizers which requires a mod to the KREF3 (a single resistor) to increase it's output, the new USB Sound and Comm port capability, Also a resistor to increase the output of the 6P6C connector on the front bottom of the K3 to power the K POD. None of this is mandatory. The cost of these updates would cost about $1100 in parts kits. - Chuck, KE9UW -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

I edited the assembly instructions as time went along and in about 2010, I got the kit and parts out, refreshed my understand of the assembly and inserting mods, etc, and finished it in about a week or so. Re: [Elecraft] New Firmware (k3fw5r57) Causes Odd Sound
I set the TX GATE to ON 10 and the complaints have been eliminated...although one fellow is still straining to hear something. I have always had the TX GATE set to OFF 0 and have over the years gotten complaints of almost imperceptible "ghosts on the audio", and then this "tiny rattle". Maybe I always needed to have the TX GATE set to ON. I don't have any noise in the room, fans or anything, kind of wondered about magnetic noise in the Shure 57 mic from all these monitors, wifi, etc. around here that you can't hear with human ears. - Chuck, KE9UW -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/New-Firmware-k3fw5r57-Causes-Odd-Sound-tp7627264p7627299.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] New Firmware (k3fw5r57) Causes Odd Sound
To clarify, the issue is there with r57 and not there with r53. I did restore the configuration of the rig to a previous configuration which was free of the anomaly, just to reload any parameters that might have changed with the install of r57, but that did not help. So...since it's so small and hard to notice by the casual, I won't worry about it, but thought that it was worth mentioning as an unwanted artifact of r57. And I don't know which portion of the newest firmware is causing it, the MCU, FPF, or DSP1,2. - Chuck, KE9UW -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/New-Firmware-k3fw5r57-Causes-Odd-Sound-tp7627264p7627279.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] New Firmware (k3fw5r57) Causes Odd Sound
The issue went away when I reloaded r53 firmware and came back with r57. I emphasize that the effect is very small and would be missed by most listeners except for some very critical listeners. One friend said it sounded like a clatter mechanical noise rather than a fan. Once you are aware of it, you hear it routinely. It's not a deal breaker, just an anomaly that might be explained and eliminated by the firmware guys. - Chuck, KE9UW -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/New-Firmware-k3fw5r57-Causes-Odd-Sound-tp7627264p7627272.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] New Firmware (k3fw5r57) Causes Odd Sound
I updated from the r35 to r57 firmware and received reports of an almost imperceptible but noticeable zizzy sound when I quit talking and before the vox drops out on 80M sideband. The listeners say it sounds like a fan in the background, but I have no fans or noise in the room. I reloaded the r35 and the issue was gone. Anybody have any ideas? Elecraft? While the Elecraft folks are just hanging out looking for something to do :), I long for an interactive link on the Elecraft site that I can just enter my K3 serial number into and it displays all the upgrades that I could benefit from and why. - Chuck, KE9UW -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KBPF3-upgrade-kit-and-instructions-Corrected-tp7604292p7604297.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] Odd WWV and K3 frequency issue...
I have calibrated the TCXO using the WWV and Spot method outlined in the manual. It also agrees with my HP counter which is good to 10^-10 or so. I have also done the VCO calibration outlined in the manual which seems to have completed it to the satisfaction of the K3. BUT, when I look at WWV on 10.000 MHz, the carrier is down about 70 Hz from the center point on the P3, and when I switch from USB to LSB, I can hear the 70 Hz on LSB and cannot hear it on USB of course because it's below my audio passband on USB. Any idea what causes this anomaly? Just curious...I probably don't understand the K3's guts as well as I should. - Chuck, KE9UW -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Odd-WWV-and-K3-frequency-issue-tp7596086.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Strange K3 KPA500 Issues fixed with a longer coax cable?
The RF in the shack answer always makes me think that if I put RF in the shack of someone on the other side of the country, then I surely have RF in my shack too. I think the real question is if the RF in the shack, everybody's shack, getting into something like the mic wiring or it's preamp. When I read the longer cable response, I thought that it's just a change to the RF getting into something. If it is more inductance that helps, then what effect does RF Ferrite clipped onto a short coax have? Sometimes when the weather changes, the match changes. There was a thread like this awhile back and it was noted that the different residual capacitances and inductances when using the KAT500 versus the ATU in the K3 makes a difference in being able to find a match with certain loads. Re: [Elecraft] Anti Static Mats
Hard to figure out what he is trying to prove. Finally on the antistatic mat issue, his point was that it doesn't affect measurements made with circuits lying on the mat. I guess I was thinking that he would show us how the mat is antistatic, as he did with the bags. Greetings, all. Dave Jones, who runs the EEVblog, has a few videos relating to anti-static bags and mats. The first one that talks about anti-static bags is worth watching. It shows the difference between the common pink anti-static bags and the silvery static shielding bags. Re: [Elecraft] K3/KPA500/KAT500 revs 4.83/1.38/1.58
Oh yes, I remember now yesterday I got a soft fault on the KPA500. I turned on the K3, the KAT500 went to the pretuned setting on 40M and then I turned on the KPA500 and clicked it into operate. I said one word and the KPA500 went to standby. No red lights. I returned it to operate and everything worked well. I did some testing and on auto the KAT500 will tune (tune wrong) if I hit it with the a possibly flat topped 500 watts. When I put the KAT500 on man it goes into bypass. Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 vs K3 ATU
The K3 has values of reactance which are smaller in size than the KAT500. Therefore there are some instances of antenna and frequency where the KAT500 cannot tune and the K3 can. In that case, you could place a reactance on the feedline to bring the KAT500 into tune. Re: [Elecraft] [KAT500] Help with KeyLine Interrupt on KPA500 (Video)
From what I read in the manual, although it would be difficult to satisfy in every way all the non-Elecraft amps, there are some thoughtful safeguards built into the KAT500 which should help. One that comes to mind is that it doesn't drop the key line if the power is over a certain amount (29 watts default). While that would not hurt the KAP500, some other amps would be damaged if the key line was to be opened when they are producing full power. Re: [Elecraft] [KAT500] Help with KeyLine Interrupt on KPA500 (Video)
The PTT is generated by the transceiver. The KAT500 passes it thru to the amp unless the KAT is tuning a high SWR. The problem is that the amp goes into fault before the KAT can OPEN the key line. Firmware in the KAT with some delay is not the answer...it's already too slow for the amp. If there is any programmable delay in the KAT, then a firmware change might be to speed that up if possible. But I doubt that it is possible since it's a relay opening in the KAT which requires some milliseconds. I'm guessing the only Elecraft solution is to delay the amp's response to the high SWR so it doesn't Fault giving the KAT time to open the key line. So the change in firmware we are waiting on is for the KPA amp. Help me if I'm missing something here. - Chuck, KE9UW -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KAT500-Help-with-KeyLine-Interrupt-on-KPA500-Video-tp7566844p7566890.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500
Umm... I want one of these but I have an MFJ998 which works well. One thing I like is seeing the values that it selects for the L network. It seems to have an almost reliable memory and tunes in a few seconds without a lot of clatter. Probably the best MFJ item I have ever bought. OT, don't ask me about the 75 amp clean switching power supply that put birdies all up and down 75 meters. I enacted the no-questions-asked return policy on that. I'll get the KAT500...any chance that it's possible to observe the tuner values on VFO B on the K3...or the VGA display etc? That would be so nice. [Elecraft] KX1 ATU causes power to drop off...
I just finished the KX1 kit and without the tuner, power output into a 50 ohm load is about 10W on 80M, and 4W on 40M, 30M, and 20M using a Bird meter, 50W slug. However the ATU which seems to work well in all testing, all the relays click, etc., in TUNE the power starts out at a reading of about 3 watts (40, 30, 20...a watt higher on 80) and falls off in about 2 to 3 seconds to about .5 watts. The Bird meter shows exactly the same power fall off. Also the SWR reading in all cases reads 1.0 using the dummy load. So it seems like something is heating up (don't feel any heat anywhere) and the power falls off...but it still always reads an SWR of 1.0 when I go out of TUNE. When I remove the ATU and install the jumper the power is steady for all bands (just higher on 80M). When I activate L0 thru L3 and C1 thru C3, I get a significant change (normal) in SWR cycling thru L0 thru L3, but cycling thru C1 thru C3, the SWR seems to just change from 2.0 to 2.1 to 2.0 Not sure what to look at... - Chuck, KE9UW -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KX1-ATU-causes-power-to-drop-off-tp7557109.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] KPA500 audio muffled?
I have gotten a few reports of sounding like my audio is muffled as compared to running the K3 alone. It is true that with several listeners in different states, there is not a consensus of opinion on that. Some of the guys think it sounds just fine, and some say they can hear a slight muffled sound with the KPA turned on. The point of comparing it to K3 only and K3 with KPA500 is that the mic is not in the equation. The report is clearly that the amp sounds muffled. Not unreadable, just slightly muffled. I have a bias current of 0.4A...about the only thing I can think of to check. I think there was some discussion of setting the bias current here, but I can't find it again. What is the range of bias current for best linearity? I don't see any help in the manual. - Chuck, KE9UW -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KPA500-audio-muffled-tp6996649p6996649.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 audio muffled?
Oh and my HV starts out at about 81 vdc and drops to about 63 vdc at 400 watts out...that is about where I run it with vox ssb. I did just change to 240vac input which results in 81 vdc and drops to 70 vdc at 400 watts, but I haven't gotten any reviews on that...just did it to see. Bias still at about 0.4 A. - Chuck, KE9UW -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KPA500-audio-muffled-tp6996649p6996722.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 audio muffled?
Thanks Eric on the voltage being normal. I thought I'd change things to possibly get some more data on what it is not, and at least keep the pilot lights on the 120vac strip from blinking slightly. There was also a comment on my email (but hasn't appeared here) that I should look into RF getting into my mic input. I am doing that and I know that I have some RF floating around here having gotten into the pc monitor, etc. I like that as a possibility although these critics I mentioned are very good at recognizing RF in the audio. But maybe just a tad can produce the results they seem to have noticed. And the correlation with higher power is obvious. I think there is also some transistors just don't sound good...get yourself a four by one and do some real QRO. I am aware of that bias as well. I really like this KPA500 amp. - Chuck, KE9UW -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KPA500-audio-muffled-tp6996649p6997487.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

You have to remove the sub to install them...
