[Elecraft] KX3 WSJTX Split

2020-04-10 Thread vk4tux
I recieved this email from Japan ;

"I decode you FT8 on 1840kHz that I send the JPG file to you.
JAs are working split RX 1840kHz and TX 1908kHz.
Please CQ JA on 1840kHz and RX 1908kHz if possible.

The 160m frequency in Japan,
  1810-1825kHz and 1907.5-1912.5kHz

DATE Sunrise (GMT) in JA3
Apr 07: 20:34Z

We hope to see you on 160m soon.
TKS 73
Mas JA3FYC"

I tried this, however on enable TX the VFO A and B become the same
frequency on TX from wsjtx.
I have cat ptt and cat control enabled, with rig split set.

If I use the mic to key etc, the split remains, however something about wstx
causes the VFO's to match on TX losing the split ?

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] How to set up the KX3 as a Panadapter with almost any transceiver

2020-02-02 Thread vk4tux
Playing with my v5.24 HRD, it all works well with the KX3 under the K3
profile, apart from activating the ATU which doesnt work with ATU or Tune
buttons.

Has anyone modified the program cat control to do this if they could share
please, thankyou.

Re: [Elecraft] HDSDR Mirrored spectrum

2020-02-02 Thread vk4tux
I had similar issue. i used a 3.5mm to 2.5mm audio cable (each end three
segment), from a Yaesu SCU-39 cable kit I was not using which looked perfect
for the job.

However it turned out the centre segment was not wired, with same results as
above. Initially I thought my line-in was possibly not stereo on rear of my
Dell PC as it is a combo pink/blue mic/line in jack.

Found a stereo 3.5mm cable and luckily a 2.5/2.5mm adaptor for one end.
Looking much better, the display better than any of several others I have
tried incl non free.

I have found the Omni-rig cat control a little buggy sometimes, losing mode
control, and freq readout offset.
Re; setup and restart seems to get it back good.

Early days, and I think i just need more practice. I am using a realtek
sound card at the moment set 192KHz, and have ordered an ASUS Xonar U7 and
an stereo isolation lit with audio lines.

I would like a PX3 , however not at current pricing, and looking at a used
unit if some one is selling.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 ATU

2012-09-18 Thread vk4tux
Don, When you say The ATU will tune the antenna to an acceptable SWR, you
are contradicting yourself, because as you rightly said the tuner does not
change the antenna feedpoint swr.

So we tune the transceiver to the feedline length feeding the antenna. that
feedline length is important
regarding the 'measured' swr. A 1/2 wl will show the antenna feedpoint swr
or impedance (with analyser).
At the connection to the transceiver before any builtin or ext tuner. The
indicated swr on the transceiver or ext tuner display shows the feed side of
the tuner swr.

In theory the swr along the feedline maintains value, but it's a very
different story when you measure it.
The 1/2 wl feedline connected to a high swr antenna feedpoint shows high swr
at the tx feedline end, but cut the feedline at the 1/4wl point and measure
there for a much different 'indicated' result.

As the swr detectors in the transceiver or atu use this method also, it
becomes obvious that feedline/coax length becomes a factor in showing the
transceiver a good match when the antenna feedpoint impedance is other than
50 ohms..

The best thing you can do in a multiband antenna setups where antenna
feedpoint impedance gets way off desired on certain bands, is to use the
lowest loss feedline possible., because this is where most of your losses
are, not the tuner. Remember only resistance can lose power as heat, not
reactance.

Every signal pass back up and down the feedline until sync radiation release
occurs, loses power with every pass depending on the feedline
specifications.

Lucia,

The Elecraft tuner (I don't care if it is a KAT2, KAT1, KXT1 o KXAT3)
cannot change the the SWR of the antenna itself. The ATU will tune the
antenna to an acceptable SWR so the PA transistor in the transceiver
are happy. If you measure the SWR between the Tuner and the antenna,
you will not see any change. The internal tuner does change the
impedance that is seen by the PA transistors, and that is the goal of
antenna tuners.

Don W3FPR

Re: [Elecraft] K3 JT 65-HF transmit?

2012-09-10 Thread vk4tux
Tony, brilliant advice! I also cant understand why anyone would waste money
on an interface for use with a K3 when one is not needed, and I have done
every data mode out there incl JT-65 with the K3 direct to PC.

A ext good quality usb soundcard is handy, but that's about it.

A German ham emailed me with a similar problem and I told him the same thing
and he was astounded at
the fact the K3 does not need an interface, Everything you need is built in,
and now he is a very happy camper.

Take the mickey-ham-ears out and try direct OM.

Adrian ... vk4tux

Tom, make sure your PC is generating audio out. Unplug the audio cable from
the PC's line out and try to transmit. You should hear the audio tones
coming out the speaker.

If your K3 is set correctly and the PC is making audio, then the problem is
that it is getting lost in whatever is between them. Whenever anyone posts
a problem like yours, I always recommend the same thing: first, get it
working with no interface. The K3 does not require a Microham or a
Rigblaster or a Signalink or anything else to do digital modes. Take it
out, hook the K3 to the PC with audio cables and key the K3 via CAT, and
get your digital modes working that way. Then if you wish to re-insert an
interface into your setup, you will more easily pinpoint problems if they
arise.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 JT 65-HF transmit?

2012-09-10 Thread vk4tux
`Comments interweaved;

First. the microHAM microKEYER II is a high quality external sound card
with lower noise floor and higher dynamic range than standard OEM sound
cards in many computers and better performance than the commodity USB
sound cards used by many - including some of the 'made for ham radio'
USB sound products.

`There was no question on your product quality.

In addition, most microHAM interfaces provide USB
to serial rig control interfaces, many include a K1EL WinKey based
keyer, *true FSK* support rather than a jitter prone software hack
and several other station control options (including isolated Icom
CI-V transceive emulation which allows automatic band switching of the
Icom PW-1 from most non-Icom transceivers).

`That's nice.

There is no reason for you to be disagreeable about other users choices
in accessories. While you may find something unnecessary, others may
have good reasons for using them.

`See on an interface for use with a K3 when one is not needed needed
being the keyword,
`hence when it is not needed then it is not necessary. There is no
disagreeable on my part.
`Some ops buy this stuff thinking it it is necessary when it is not, and do
not realise the effort Elecraft `have put into the K3 built-in isolated
audio interface.

`You outlined the specific area's where the Microham may be useful
splendidly.

`You represent Microham Joe and good for you, but please do not see that as
a critique on the device `itself.

Re: [Elecraft] Antenna static charge precautions - any tips?

2012-09-09 Thread vk4tux

Unusual to see that as an issue withought using an amplifier, however the
high antenna feedpoint impedance on such setups produce a high voltage at
that point, despite the atu proving a 50 ohm impedance match to the
transceiver.

Baluns rated at 3-5 KW are so only at 1:1 swr. When swr raises to 5:1 on
certail bands on a ocf setup then really you should derare the power rating
by the denominator 5, such that a 5KW rating becomes 1KW.
This will provide a long life on ocf setups etc.

Recently I had to dismantle my antenna (brand name unnecessary) to take out
a burned gas discharge tube. I had been operating it on a Warc band for
which it was not designed, made possible by the efficient tuner of my K3. I
was told that the tube might have/probably burned out because it was seeing
a high SWR that, of course, was not actually corrected at the antenna (just
in my radio, as expected).

Now, if that was what happened, what is there to keep the same thing from
happening in my K3? Obviously, there must be something!

Scott XE1/AA0AA; AA0AA

Re: [Elecraft] Small got-ya to watch for when doing the K3 12VDC Out Current Mod

2012-09-09 Thread vk4tux

Ok, I was thinking the P3/SVGA drew less current at 15v than 12v, due to the
5/3.3/2.5/2.2 v pwr supply setup requiring less current at 15v input than it
does at 14v input or less.

I checked the K3 output with a 20 ohm/50w variable rheostat and it trips at
0.6amp or 600mA on my fluke 87.

What most people notice is that the P3 will switch off after a period of
operation when the resettable fuse finally heats enough to open. Your K3 may
have a defective resettable fuse in the 12V output line.

Re: [Elecraft] Use of wireless keyboard with P3/SVGA

This is a nice device for ragchew work, but could be risky on a rare contact
or contesting when the keyboard battery goes flat. However I see;

Hassle-free design: Up to 3 years of power without battery changes plus
simple setup with plug-and-play wireless receiver (Keyboard battery life may
vary depends on usage)

So maybe its not that big a risk.

I note the product info says;

Requires programming with Logitech's SetPoint software, free for download

Does it have to be programmed before use with the P3SVGA?

Bob, OK on the programming. I use it for RTTY. I hope to improve my type
speed, however as you go typing is not the best RTTY print on the RX machine
when sent by me.

If there was a way to have a programmable character entry buffer which
released at 45bps, once you have entered eg; 10 characters, or whatever you
wish maybe also using bt to fill spaces etc, it may improve sent print
quality. I use Vox send in svga config.

Of course if you are a good typer then you have no issue.

I have a few macro's and they are handy, but to have a decent qso, the
custom for qso keyboard entry is needed.
Having macro qso's on psk31 bored me to tears years ago, often the other
station will not type , but just send macro's incl 73.

Quite often an open will only attenuate a rx signal rather than silence it
altogether as a short will do.

I would probably go with 2 x 1.5KE51CA-ND inverse paralleled across the diode

[Elecraft] K3Util Firmware version

2012-08-21 Thread vk4tux
I would assume the default K3Util firmware lookup would point to;

ftp://ftp.elecraft.com/K3/firmware/

Could an option in K3Util provide old and beta defaults with a menu select,
such that to revert firmware the k3Util would look at;

ftp://ftp.elecraft.com/K3/firmware/old/

or to try beta;

ftp://ftp.elecraft.com/K3/firmware/beta/

Like a user repository select function in K3Util, giving the user quick easy
selection of older, current or beta firmware. The programming change should
be simple to enable deault ftp url links to menu description.

Is this a good idea for simplicity?

Some op's find the download , unzip then manual browsing for other than
current versions, etc a bit brainswelling.

Re: [Elecraft] K3Util Firmware version

2012-08-21 Thread vk4tux
Answered Inline;

Beta firmware should not be installable by accident. Should have to go
somewhere else on purpose, get it on purpose and install it quite on
purpose. Same thing for retrograde firmware.

~The current firmware would remain the startup default and beta or old would
need to be user selected from K3Util advanced submenu, by the user.

Needing to go backward on an Elecraft firmware release is really very rare.

~Not lately

Your particular issue has two sides to it as I have seen on the reflector,
and maybe a dozen or two or three out of 6000+ owners going back to 4.48.
That is not at all to diminish the complaints, but one needs to consider
the vast majority when putting up possibilities in the main utility
program. Mostly the utility has to be designed for new builders and newbie
owners.

~The k3Utility should be designed for any K3 owner. The user selects could
be a submenu of the advanced menu. Anytime new firmware does not meet
expectations, the user should be able to easily revert back.

I note that via the reflector copies of 4.48 were very quickly available.
You guys figured it out and fixed it quite quickly. You did not appear to
really need anything else to get squared to your satisfaction. Try that
with other brands.

Keep the utility safe for newbies and non-technical types.

~If there is nothing in the ftp beta folder then it can not be selected.
Elecraft obviously decide when a beta is ready for general release beyond a
test group and control what is their server.

~#Reverting to older software without downloading, unzipping and browse
located to load etc is a nice convenience.

~I have done it like # many times, and is of no issue to me however I would
be surprised if the general K3 user would not appreciate the feature (which
needs to be selected) of reverting back or trying beta software that is
available for download otherwise at Elecrafts discretion decision to have
it available.

~If you keep non-technical types wrapped up in cotton wool, then how will
they ever become technical or real hams?

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] PSK31 Problem

Hi Roy, Until you find the issue sending four dots before the message may
help, i.e.
cqdx etc, such that the rxer sees cqdx at least.

Yes the setup delay holds tx for that period at the end of tx input and does
not provide a lead.

The only suggestion I have is increasing : CONFIG:TX DLY.value,

and/or Using a P3SVGA data tx method other than vox for psk31, where a enter
or cntrl key sends the stored text entered..

Since running the K3 at 15v there has been no misbehaviour.

My theory is the current sensor playing up at the lower voltage.

I just wondered if you ever condidered offering a
@elecraft.com service to your customers (at a fee of course). It sure
would be cool to have an Elecraft email address, and you would have a

I'm sure it could be done similar to the ARRL format example etc.
I guess it just depends if you wish to keep it to staff only or extend to
customers(at a fee).

For thought and input?

Re: [Elecraft] P3 TX Audio monitoring

2012-07-03 Thread vk4tux
Gary, I had replied to your post, perhaps it went to you direct and I am on
your naughty list ? ;)

Anyhow if the K3 baud rate (rs-232 config) is not 38400 then that will do
it.

Some versions of firmware in the past would sync the K3-P3 to 38400, but I
am not sure now.
Anyhow check the baud rate. I used that trick with a PF assigned to change
K3 baud rate to other than 38400 to chk my TX. It was good for one over and
then would re-sync back to 38400.

cheers

When you say PC, do you mean a personal computer board?

Why not explain yourself better if you in fact know what you are talking

If K3Util had a inbuilt config check box to prevent (meta)autoload then it
could be used simultaneously with other useful progs on the K3. I like using
the terminal on FSK-D RTTY, that's why I asked. I also want to try it with
W4P3.

Easy enough to clear a checkbox and reconnect direct for firmware/config
usage.

Other than that is a terminal only version of K3Util a possibility Dick?

Other than that I guess I can try Kcomm.

Re: [Elecraft] K3Util with LPBridge

2012-06-05 Thread vk4tux
Re:
If LP-Bridge had a checkbox to permit the K3 Utility, it could also be used
simultaneously with other programs, allowing the Terminal function.

I spent a couple of days of testing and removed the use of the AI command
wherever I could in the K3 Utility a couple of years ago (June of 2010 as I
recall, but I may be off a bit), informed N8LP, and he chose to make no
LP-Bridge changes to allow the K3 Utility to be connected.

Easy enough as you say, but my time was wasted, as LP-Bridge wasn't changed.

RF gain calibration fails if spurious input arrives, so it's still turned
off (and restored) in RF Gain calibration. That's the only place in the K3
Utility that AIn; is changed.

The K3 Utility has nothing in it that detects LP-Bridge and disallows use of
the K3 Utility.

May I gently suggest that it is the LP-Bridge author that might need to
offer the checkbox to allow the K3 Utility to use LP-Bridge instead of the
other way around? About the only thing you'd want to use it for would be
the terminal page.

Dick, K6KR

Thankyou Dick, that was very informative. So it seems it is possible
depending on LPBridge author etc.
I did find some archive on your work togather from a year or two back.

As you say the terminal function is what I want on collaboration with W4P3
etc, and I find it very good.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 psk D splater

2012-05-30 Thread vk4tux
I take it your running a typical 13.8v supply.

Running a stiff 15v supply cleans up the K3 TX IM3 dramatically.
The filter also keeps the key signals clean into the K3.

You say the guy was talking bars on the psk signal.
I guess he may not know what he is talking about.
Next time you get a bad report, ask them to email a screenshot
of your signal or report how wide it is.

PSK-D is usually exceptionally clean, and the fix items I mentioned will
ensure it stays that way.

Loud (bars) does not mean wide. Why do you take notice of idiots like that
with stupid non-sense reports.

If you turn down your power he has less bars and now your signal is clean.
Is that how this guy relates?

You assumed he was right regarding your signal,
because you asked here regarding answers, and it
appears you are not interested in improving your
TX IM3 dismissing the proven fixes.

etc.

Our concern here is why would a K3 put out a dirty PSK-D signal, Thats what
I commented on.

What is the K3 screen voltage indicator telling you?

NB:(Apologies to group for some bad spelling in earlier posts. Using nabble

Re: [Elecraft] K3, etc. Question.

2012-05-22 Thread vk4tux
The K3_EZ swr plotter points will be of the KAT-500 input over the tested
frequency range.

I am not sure why that would be useful, unless a high swr is observed on the
k3.

What swr tune points do you mean? It is an autotuner in anycase yes?

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Dayton- new hf rigs?

2012-05-21 Thread vk4tux
Yes the lower price is for the 6500 transceiver (not receiver)
;
FLEX-6500 Limited Edition Pre-Order Deposit Only - Total Introductory Price:
$3999 (deposit $1200)

The FLEX-6500™ Signature Series transceiver is based on a new hardware
architecture and SmartSDR software platform. This hardware uses Digital
Down Conversion (DDC) to convert from RF to digital and Digital Up
Conversion (DUC) to convert from Digital to RF. The FLEX-6500 uses a single
Spectral Capture Unit (SCU) for the RF to digital conversion and an ultra
high performance on-board signal processing and control system to perform
demodulation and modulation, filtering, and audio stream management. The
result is incredible receiver dynamic range and received signal clarity.

The FLEX-6500 model transceiver utilizes a single SCU for reception from
0.33 to 77 MHz and the ability to create up to 4 full featured independent
SLICE RECEIVERS. Optimized preselector filters can be selected for the ham
bands for greater out of band rejection.

SmartSDR is the ecosystem of the radio platform. It organizes all the
signal processing power in the radios into an advanced radio fabric.
SmartSDR understands the capabilities of each SCU and how to harness its
power. It also comprises of the presentation layer or GUI client that the
user interacts with. The FLEX-6500 utilizes an Ethernet connection for
high-speed driverless access to the graphical user interface (GUI).

The FLEX-6500 provides continuous duty 100W output across the entire 160-6m
band. The FLEX-6500 also includes an automatic antenna tuner (ATU) capable
of tuning antennas over 10:1 range (3:1 on 160m and 6m).

For more technical information on the FLEX-6000 series of software defined
radios, just download the FLEX-6000 Product Brochure.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 AM receive question

2012-05-14 Thread vk4tux
Joe, Doesnt the KFL3B-FM filer allow AM transmit, wnen you set it up as 6k
bandwidth in K3 Utility Xtal config?
I was under the impression from past posts that that was the case and
KFL3B-FM could be set back to 13k for FM use again?

Re: [Elecraft] Linux and K3 Utility

2012-03-22 Thread vk4tux
Do you run a nvidia linux driver? try nomodeset in kernel boot line.

To set kernel boot options, you must edit your grub configuration.
You can do this temporarily for a single boot by entering the grub menu.
If you do not get to see the grub boot menu after the bios automatically,
you may have to press SHIFT key after the bios logo to get in to grub:

Select the default ubuntu kernel (usually the top one), and rather than
pressing enter, press E to edit.
Press DOWN ARROW until you get to the line that starts with Code:linux /boot
and press END keys to position your cursor at the end of the that line
usually
ending with “quiet splash”.

Now you can type in additional kernel option: nomodeset

Press control+X to boot the modified grub entry

To permanently change the default kernel boot options, press ALT+F2 or open
a terminal from system accessories terminal.

Type in the following command:

Code:
gksudo gedit /etc/default/gruba text editor will open with the grub
configuration file. Near the top of that file you will see something very
similar to this:

Code:
GRUB_DEFAULT=0
#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2 /dev/null || echo Debian`
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=add your custom boot options to the
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line, so for instance:

Code:
GRUB_DEFAULT=0
#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2 /dev/null || echo Debian`
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash nomodeset
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=Save the file and exit gedit. If you have to add kernel
options that contain quotation marks, add them as such:

Code:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash nomodeset acpi_osi=\Linux\Now in
the terminal, run the following command to update your grub configuration
with the new default settings:

Code:
sudo update-grub

Saw your callsign, and would like to mention that if you ever
develop a hand mic for the K3 etc, please let us know.

The ic-7 mic kit I got from you years back works A1. Sorry for being
OT. Hope you enjoy the KX3.
