RX IN ports together with a BNC T connector and then to the RX Antenna. Works
just fine.

[Elecraft] Elecraft QSK

2017-02-28 Thread wb6rse1
The Elecraft KPA500 silent QSK is achieved without expensive PIN diodes but
rather with relatively inexpensive switching diodes. I’ll guess that the 1500
watt Elecraft prototype amp of some years ago used a similar inexpensive,
silent design.

Avoiding QSK should be because of operator preference not because of fear of
relay failure. In the case of operating non-QSK, it’s vital for the operator to
keep calls short and not be caught in a cycle of doubling with the DX that’s
heard all too often.

My Alpha 87A of 17 years or so has never had a PIN diode failure. When the 87A
was first introduced there were indeed PIN diode failures. This was attributed
to a bad batch (or batches?) of PIN diodes. Subsequent runs of 87A's ceased to
exhibit PIN diode failures. Yet the urban legend persists that 87A’s should be
avoided because of the PIN diodes - which are expensive to replace.

The real question is why amplifier manufacturers continue to use vacuum relays
when inexpensive switching diodes can do the job. Thank you Elecraft.

Getting “hosed” can be a self-inflicted wound. Early adoption of the latest and

OS upgrade enhancements. Always make sure that all critical applications and
hardware drivers you use are compatible with any new OS before upgrading. Many
hw drivers often lag an OS release. Always make a complete system backup to
allow reverting to an earlier OS version if disaster strikes. If the're going
to be any problems others will have discovered them first. Then plan for sw and

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Beta 5r10 and LINK

2015-02-16 Thread wb6rse1
The CPU between my ears is what the L vs R phase difference processes in
Diversity mode. I can get a somewhat similar affect using AFX (or the
equivalent with a Heil headset that has a phase reversal switch) but
significantly without the benefit of the phase difference of the received
signal from two different antennas in Diversity RX.

I never use LINK. When my K3 is in LINK mode, I stare at the front panel until
I realize it's operator error. I’ve seen this all to often when a DXpedition
using a K3 thinks he’s split but is actually working guys on his TX frequency.
An unfortunate bonanza for the all to eager lid police.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Splitter for Loop RX Antenna ?

2013-09-12 Thread wb6rse1
A simple BNC T connector (IE wire-or) from the RX antenna to the KXV3A RX IN
and to the AUX IN of the SUB RX works fine. No amplification necessary. In
diversity RX, the Main RX switches to my TX vertical and the SUB RX swicthes to
the RX Antenna - loop, beverage etc. I had first tried a Magic-T splitter but
found it to be unnecssary vs the T.

It's wise to use a front end protector like an Array Solutions AS-RXFEP in line
with the RX Antenna if it's close to the TX antenna. An Preamp like a KD9SV
BF981 can also prove useful as well as an Array Solutions W3NQN brick wall
Broadcast Band filter if local stations overload the front end on 160.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and Alpha 87A SWR

2012-08-22 Thread wb6rse1
Alpha shipped a 6ft length of coax to use between the exciter and the 87A. With
new tubes, the input SWR on all bands should be 1.5 or less. As the 3CX800A7s
hours add up, the tubes gradually require more RF drive for the same output.
Alpha recommends keeping the grid current between 20 and 50 ma. Brand new tubes
will require between in the low 40s to high 30s (watts) at 35 ma of grid
current for full output depending upon band.

Go ahead and use the K3 ATU inline. It's not a problem. But do watch for the
gradually increasing drive and grid current demands of the 87A over time. If
that means keeping the drive down as the tubes age, 1200 vs 1500 watts output
will never be noticed.

With very heavy use, a pair of 3CX800A7s can last 10-12 years.

YMWV.

Use the V M and the M1-M4 Quick Mem buttons. EG - M1 CW, M2 Data, M3 SSB.
You're on 20m CW and want to go to 20m SSB but want to come back to the same
spot on 20m CW. V M then M1 will save the CW freq (and sub RX and split
settings etc). And V M then M3 will do the same for the SSB freq you just
went to. Then M V and the M# button will easily let you toggle between
freqs/modes. Do it a few times and you won't even think about it.

[Elecraft] PTØS and KX3

2012-08-05 Thread wb6rse1
George, AA7JV, is just back from a recon trip to St. Peter Paul rocks for the
PTØS operation coming up in November. The rigs will be K3s with a combiner of
two SG500 amplifiers for one KW at one of the operating positions. This is the
same scheme that George and Tomi, HA7RY, have used successfully in the Pacific.

George used a KX3 with a whip on the recon trip to determine the quietest
location for the low band receiving antennas. You can read about it in News
Updates here:

Your support of the DXpedition will surely be appreciated.

[Elecraft] KPA500 PR6 AUX Cable Pin 11

2012-06-24 Thread wb6rse1
I use the Y cable with the KPA500 AUX cable to connect the KPA500 and the PR6
6m preamp control line to the K3. The RX passthrough for the PR6 to use RX only
antennas doesn't work when the KPA500 is connected, powered on or off.
Searching the reflector archives, I was relieved to find that I was not alone
and that this problem had been identified.

The connection of the KPA500 to pin 11 changes the threshold that triggers the
PR6 on/off relay so that the PR6 remains on (and hence no passthrough function)
no matter what the menu setting of DIGIOUT1 on the K3.

Since the pin 11 inhibit function of the KPA500 isn't used at the moment, the
fix is to open pin 11 in the AUX cable. Rather than damage the cable, I used
HD15 M/M and F/F gender changers (I could not find a M/F locally) to create the
equivalent of an HD 15 M/F gender changer. I twisted off the male pin 11
creating a pin 11 interrupter essentially the same as the pin 10 interrupter
Elecraft supplies with the AUX cable.

The PR6 passthrough function and the DIGIOUT1 setting now work correctly.

[Elecraft] Elecraft PDFs vs Mac OS

2012-04-19 Thread wb6rse1
If you are using Mac OS 10.7.3 (Lion) and the Safari browser v5.1.5 and cannot
see/print PDFs, you likely have a conflict with an installed Adobe PDF Reader.

Do this:

Delete/trash all copies of Adobe Reader from your Applications folder.

From HDLibraryInternet Plug-Ins delete/trash these files:

AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin
AdobePDFViewer.plugin

Restart Safari. This also fixes the same problem with Firefox. Google Chrome
works without these deletions.

You can use the Adobe Reader installer to reverse the above if you wish.

[Elecraft] K3 Diversity Macro

2011-10-27 Thread wb6rse1
This macro simplifies switching the K3 into diversity receive mode. This K3
configuration and antennas are required:

1) KRX3 second receiver
2) KXV3A or KXV3 RF I/O module
3) The main TX antenna is used for receive along with a separate RX antenna. The
RX antenna is connected to both the KXV3/A RX ANT input and the SUB RX AUX RF
input via a BNC T adapter or Magic-T type 3dB splitter.
The RX antenna is the default receiving antenna - the RX ANT button's state
shows RX highlighted on the display.

Here's the macro:

SWT13;SWT13;FT1;RT0;XT0;UPB4;DV1;SWT25;

VFO B is set to VFO A all parameters; Split TX is enabled; any RIT/XIT offsets
are zeroed; the split frequency is set to 2 kHz up; diversity mode is enabled;
the RX ANT is disengaged to allow the main RX to use the TX antenna for
receive. Note SWT25; toggles the state of the RX ANT button. The macro assumes
it's enabled before switching to diversity RX.

If you have two separate RX antennas/arrays, connect one to RX ANT and the
other to AUX RF and remove SWT25; from the macro string.

To turn off diversity receive use this macro:

DV0;SWT25;

This OFF macro also switches the main RX back to the RX antenna from the TX
antenna or to the dedicated RX antenna connected to RX ANT.

I set the first macro to Tap-M4 and the second to Hold-M4. This dedicates a
single button to control diversity RX ON/OFF.

This diversity ON macro eliminates the need to hold the SUB button while the K3
syncs VFOs and enables diversity mode.

If operating split while in diversity mode, to hear and adjust your TX split
frequency, hold the REV button and tune with VFO A not the sub VFO B knob.
Release to listen to the station of interest.

If you haven't tried it, the K3's diversity RX capability is a very valuable
low band weak signal receiving tool.

Re: [Elecraft] K3s and P3s Can't Swim

2011-09-14 Thread wb6rse1
There was an Strays in QST MANY years ago about a Collins 75A series receiver
that had fallen off of a dock at a port in Africa while in it's crate. (Anyone
else recall that story?) The recipient retrieved the crate, removed all of the
tubes, washed every corner with fresh water and let it bake in the African sun.
Once dried and the tubes reinstalled, it worked perfectly. That was a Collins.

The K3 and P3 are different technologies of course, but you could do worse than
to try the cleaning suggestions already mentioned since you consider the K3/P3
a total loss anyway.

[Elecraft] K3 APF Effectiveness

2010-11-17 Thread wb6rse1
There are many variables at work with regard to judging the effectiveness of
the K3 APF. In addition to the discussions of noise and careful tuning, there
are user preferences to consider:

1) Headphones vs speakers
2) Enhancing a weak signal to pop up that would otherwise be copyable with
adjustment of NR, NB, bandwidth/shift and/or the use of diversity RX.
3) Enhancing a truly weak signal that would otherwise be impossible to copy.

When commenting on the effectiveness of the APF, it would be useful to know
what other of the K3's tools are in use and how they are adjusted.

The ability to do it .001 with FINE tuning (or .05 in the next release TBD)
allowed me to tune to a peak a very weak 9UØA on 80m that was much more
difficult and less effective with the tuning at .01. Especially when the target

Yes, you can fine-tune (1 Hz) using either the VFO or RIT.

In addition, it looks like the next release may provide 5-Hz
increments for tuning the APF center frequency (presently 10). We're
testing that now.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 APF FINE Tuning

2010-11-03 Thread wb6rse1
I spoke too quickly. Wayne is referring to changing the AFP freq. I was
referring to tuning the RX. Tuning one or both is aimed at getting the desired
signal to the peak. .001 is very useful for really weak sigs. Having the shift
control move the APF 5 hz vs 10 hz would also help in combination.

In what circumstances if tuning the APF frequency useful?

If you look at the schematic of the SignaLink, you'll see that it is redundant

RX for split frequency DX chasing.

[Elecraft] K3 6M SWR

2010-05-06 Thread wb6rse1
Antenna: M2inc 6M5X. I'm getting much higher SWR readings from an LP100 vs the
K3. The LP100 shows a rather flat response across several hundred kc vs a
typical curve over the same frequency range using the K3's internal SWR meter.
The LP100 coupler is rated to 54 MHz.

Re: [Elecraft] CW/CW-REV config option

For DXers, the standard for CW has always been USB. IE a higher pitch tone
means a station higher in frequency. Very useful when looking for the spot

indeed CW REV. LSB CW, for DXing, is considered backwards. To each his own.

I had not noticed this but do now that I've looked. First time on DATA

This happens at lower and saturated ALC levels. My normal is set for
a 4-5 ALC flicker. My power out settings are by band (PWR SET = PER-

This is with Mac OS 10.5 and an iMic USB I/O.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: CW feature request

2009-12-02 Thread wb6rse1
LSB on the lower bands and USB on the higher bands is an artifact of
the mixing scheme, from the early days of SSB, of a 9 Mc IF mixed with
a 5.0 - 5.5 Mc VFO. (Yes, it was Mc in those days, not MHz.) Add and
you get 20m. Subtract and you get 80m. The subtraction results in
sideband reversal and so LSB became the standard for 80m. There is
really no reason now to not to just operate USB on all bands other
than tradition.

On CW, the standard among CW DXers has always been USB CW because it
means that the higher the tone, the higher the frequency. Intuitively
useful when tuning a split pile up. Just as clockwise rotation of the
VFO knob means higher frequency.

I operate USB on RTTY for that same reason, even though the standard
is LSB. The stations I work on RTTY don't know that I'm USB.

It is curious that normal CW for the K3 is LSB. I'm sure Elecraft had
their reasons. My K3 is always in CW REV mode.

[Elecraft] K3 Diversity RX

2009-09-15 Thread wb6rse1
My K3 includes the KRX3, KAT3 KXV3A.

On 160m and 80m, I use a shunt fed tower for TX/RX and a separate RX
loop that goes through an RF limiter and external preamp to RX ANT IN.
For Diversity RX, the loop has to be connected to AUX RF but it's then
not available to the Main RX. In order to have the flexibility to use
the RX loop with either the Main RX or the Sub RX for diversity, I
built a switch box to route the loop to either RX ANT IN or AUX RF. A
HOLD of the K3's RX ANT button toggles the antenna input to the Sub RX
to the correct BNC.

I considered using ANT2 on the KAT3 but it wasn't obvious that I could
achieve the same flexibility. Other solutions to allow the RX loop to
be available for both the Main RX or the Sub RX in diversity mode?

My tower and RX loop are very close. The RF limiter protects the RX
front ends from QRO. Caution! Your situation may be different.

While in diversity RX you can operate split and also check your TX
frequency with the REV button. Then use VFO A to find your spot. A
very elegant design feature!
