[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, It has been a pleasant week. A number of new birds arrived: a female Black-Headed Grosbeak, a Yellow Warbler, a Gold Crowned Kinglet, and a turkey vulture. Those were only the ones who got my attention. I am sure there are many more since the forest is producing insects and flowers. The sun has not slowed down its activity. A near X-class flare today with others earlier in the week. There are plenty of ions available. Now to find a moment between RF black outs. QSB should be deep and varied in frequency. Late spring thunderstorms will add a layer of static. Please join us on (or near): 14050 kHz at 2200z Sunday (3 PM PDT Sunday) 7047 kHz at z Monday (5 PM PDT Sunday) 73, Kevin. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, It was a cool, partly sunny week. Temperatures were warm enough for hummingbirds to actively defend the feeder. New growth, a fresh crop of insects, and drier weather brought many new birds. I expect to see the elk return to take advantage of the grass. The sun is active; three X class flares so far have caused RF black outs. They have been arriving with an approximate 12 hour interval. It looks like we can slip both nets in between them. There will be no shortage of ions to relay signals. There will also be a wealth of QSB. Please join us on (or near): 14050 kHz at 2200z Sunday (3 PM PDT Sunday) 7047 kHz at z Monday (5 PM PDT Sunday) 73, Kevin. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report
Good Evening, Conditions on 20 meters were poor. I got a chance to ask if the frequency was in use. Then the op running it came out of the noise to reach S6. This was true for 2 kHz in either direction. I listened for a while before I got back to chores. 40 meters also had deep QSB but the contesters had ceased operations so I could hear deeper into the noise. Signals varied by three to four S units. Weather reports seemed cool for the last week of May. The sun is rising earlier and setting later, warmth is due any day now. Good Evening, It has been a chilly, wet week. The cold weather has affected the hummingbirds. The males don't fight very much, not even a tail display. They just give each other angry glares as they feed. The sun is a little less active. We are between the most active groups which last for multiple passes. One of those is due on Monday if I'm not mistaken. Then we're back to X class flares, RF black outs, with a chance of southerly aurora. So, for a limited time there may be poor to OK propagation. Good Evening, The sun remains quite active. Solar flux is above 200 and the sunspot number is over 160. However, the large group from last week is no longer facing our way so the CMEs should slow down for a while. Hopefully there will be better propagation tomorrow than that of the last few weeks. The ferns are growing rapidly. The bracken fern were only a foot tall a week ago, now they are six feet and taller. Just today I noticed they are starting to unroll. The forest is very green with new leaves. New growth on the fir trees showed up today too. Those deer will be back soon to prune that growth from the lower branches. The sprouting sword fern are preparing new mats to keep sleeping deer above the wet forest floor. Good Evening, The ongoing geomagnetic storm has dropped to G1. Tomorrow they are predicting another round at the G5 level. Communications below 30 MHz will probably be impaired. Hopefully the two nets will be unaffected during a lull between CMEs. The snow from last week was replaced by a few days of 80 degrees. The daffodils had an eight week run so they did pretty well. I noticed a tiny hummingbird this morning. It took a few moments, processing a stack of memories. "The same thing happened last year." The Anna's Hummingbirds have returned with the heat. Good Evening, Spring is progressing. I finally saw the hummingbird which is emptying the feeder. I also saw a doe with a yearling eating their way across the new undergrowth. Their winter coats make them quite visible. They were back again today. Then the doe found a dry spot under a cedar tree and napped all afternoon. Around 5:30 she shook herself and got back to eating. The sun has been quite active this week. Multiple CMEs were created, some of them hitting the earth, some passing close by. Good Evening, Some weeks nothing goes right, this was not one of them. Light rain then sun and mild temperatures. More flowers and more birds. Snow is melting above me so streams are full. The ground was dry enough to let me check the forest. I have much less damage than my neighbors. Their trees are quite a bit younger, they snapped where green wood met more mature timber. Clear growth assures trees will survive; any kinks or forks can be fatal to them. The sunspot number is low and the flux rate is lower too. However, the sun has been quite active this week. There is still a possible earth effective flare from 3615. I expect a more quiet band than we have had lately. Less roaring. There may even be less QSB. Good Evening, It was sunny and warm today. Most of the snow has melted so I went for a walk to check the damage to the forest. A few dozen broken trees ranging from ten inches in diameter to twenty. Good Evening, Both nets had OK propagation. Both bands also had QSO party participants. I know Wisconsin was having theirs but it sounded like a number of other states were having theirs too. The CW bands were being utilized :) Weather reports were uplifting. Almost everyone else has sun with warm temperatures. Only Dwight and I are experiencing the tail end of winter. I expect my snow will be gone by the end of the week. My daffodils were about six inches tall when the snow started falling. They will be ready for sun when they're uncovered. KD5ONS - I have written some code to simulate a wind tunnel. It is far from mature. What I want it to do differs from what I am telling it to do. Gradually I am taming various features as I learn the algorithms of the Lattice Boltzmann method. Here is a link to screen shots of a variety of profiles in a wind stream at a Reynold's number of 100.0 : http://bacona.design/tunnel.html The lattice Boltzmann algorithms can also model electric and magnetic fields. A way to model antennas and their propagation fields. Or see how inductors interact. Test how orienting your toroids will lessen their effects on each other over a range of frequencies. Lots of interesting code to write :) I wrote another page to partially document my elastic mesh ideas: http://bacona.design/mesh.html This one is quite large so it will take a long time to load if your net connection is slow. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Good Evening, The snow is no longer in the trees. It has all fallen after pruning the forest. A few small trees are down, a few large tops, lots of branches, thousands of cones, and millions of fir needles. A good supply of lichen is on the snow attracting the deer. Squirrels are busy processing the cones. The sun is active with a new crop of sunspots. The sunspot number is below 100 but some of them have mixed magnetic fields. Those are always interesting. A few glancing CMEs during the week and another due quite soon. I expect a variety of types of QSB. Good Evening, The sun had an active week sending numerous flares and CMEs. There were a few RF blackouts but the CMEs mostly missed us. There are fewer sunspots though plenty of ions are flowing our way. Expect a variety of QSB, some ion static, and those odd noises which whistle through the bands. My forecast ranged from no snow to six feet of it. Reality settled on six inches which did not survive the following heavy rain. The fir trees are happy, the ground is quite soggy. No hummingbirds yet but they react to my Christmas cactus which just started blooming. They can't be far off, the snow probably kept them at lower elevation. Good Evening, After a series of very cold days winter has returned to normal. In other words it is raining, foggy, and the snow is melting. I expect the snow to be gone by Wednesday at this rate. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, It was the day before the day before Christmas. The clouds settled into the valleys with the sun skimming the southern horizon. It held little warmth due to the grazing angle. My walk was more brisk than usual to generate some heat. However, I did not startle a bird, deer, or elk. Too cold for the spiders to parachute from the trees, but there were no insect flying either. The sun is active with a number of large sunspot groups. In a week a very large and unstable group is going to point in our direction. The new year will begin with a number of flares, maybe into the X class. 2024 will be interesting. Tomorrow we may miss another CME and have good conditions. Good Evening, Twenty meters was full of ongoing QSOs when I searched for a frequency. Thank you for finding me; I'm sure propagation assisted you all. Conditions were better than I had hoped for. Noise was low on twenty meters and not much higher on forty meters. QSB was moderate on twenty but signals were strong enough to limit any problems. Forty meters had just a little more, some of it fast. Sunset had passed me but the ionosphere had not yet settled down. Good Evening, Terrestrial weather has been partly sunny, windy, and chilly. Solar weather was more intense. Multiple CMEs are on the way spawned by a single sunspot. Good Evening, Good Grief! I predicted propagation conditions correctly :) Both bands were fairly quiet with mild QSB. One op mentioned all bands being good. Good Evening, It has been mostly sunny but cool. The first snow of the season fell yesterday. Early in the week I heard branches breaking so I went outside for a look. A herd of elk was spread through the forest. The younger elk were chasing each other around the clearest areas breaking rotting slash. Two dozen cows were busy ignoring them and eating. A medium sized bull was trailing the group. A cannibalistic CME struck our ionosphere this week, many prominent aurora glowed in both hemispheres. More CMEs are coming due to a number of active sunspot groups. There is also a hole in the sun's atmosphere aimed right at us. The sun is no longer quiescent; the next few days should prove noisy. Good Evening, It was a much less gloomy week. In fact it was downright sunny. Cold though, at least for here. Last night it dropped into the high teens. It did get above freezing today but not by much. The bird basin has not thawed. The elk have carved a new path just inside a younger stand of trees nearby. The hunters have been plentiful so they change their habits and don't cross the roads until well after dark. The sun is quite speckled, active with current and impending events. The sunspot number and the solar flux are both high, 184 and 178 respectively. We are also in the midst of the CQ WW DX contest. I may not be able to find an open space for the twenty meter net. Good Evening, It has been a wet week. The sun did come out for a few seconds but the rest of the time it has been foggy, rainy, and gloomy. Almost all of the bracken ferns are yellow, gold, or bronze. Leaves have mostly changed to some shade of yellow with a slight tinge of orange. Birds are scarce. There are aurora but with constant cloud cover it is hard to see them. I am also too far away from the magnetic North pole to see them on a regular basis. Good Evening, Twenty meters was pretty good. Some slow, mild QSB with a little noise. Forty meters was OK too with a little storm noise. The KH1 was mentioned but a KX1 checked in from a backyard. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, More color changes and fewer leaves let me see the birds more easily. During a burst of heavy rain I watched a number of Varied Thrushes using transient puddles to wash up. I thought birds sat under cover when it rained; they were enjoying the downpour. Two CMEs may hit today. The sun is mostly bare. There is a lower rate of flux too. The bands should both be capable of comms. There may even be less QSB if those CMEs don't hit us. Dense fog slows or stops my Internet connection though HF gets through OK. Twenty meters has been open to middle California for the last few weeks. Which of those 100 new KH1s will be the first to check in with us? Good Evening, The rainy season began early this year; the last week was chilly, foggy, and wet. The sun returned today highlighting new color changes. With temperatures dropping to the mid 30s some shrubs are getting ready for winter. Some crows were ridge soaring over me today. With their slender wings they can't hang in one place very long. They made multiple passes instead. The solar forecast is for calm and steady conditions. I expect thunder storms to modify that prediction. But low QSB would be nice. Good Evening, I was pruning begonias when an Oregon Nuthatch landed on the lip of the water basin next to me. Three common species are the Oregon Junco, the Oregon Chickadee, and the Oregon Nuthatch. Each of them has a patch of rusty brown on them. Otherwise they are like their cousins out east. It is starting to smell like fall, the birds are dropping lower in the trees. Squirrels are racing along the highest limbs freeing them of their cones. As they fall they bounce off of every limb beneath. Great dispersal mechanism, but you need a hardhat to walk around. The sun snuck a CME into the flow of earthward ions. It is due tomorrow so there may be a blackout, or there may be more noise, or there could be more QSB. We shall see, it could miss us entirely. Kind of like those cones falling from the sky. I will switch between my 20 m dipole and the 40 meter vertical. The reason I have not used a dipole for the net is because they are too directive. An inverted V grabs a wider swath and sends a weaker signal. One of those engineering trade offs where there are no real winners, only compromise. Please join us on (or near): 14050 kHz at 2200z Sunday (3 PM PDT Sunday) 7047 kHz at z Monday (5 PM PDT Sunday) 73, Kevin. KD5ONS - I banged on some code until it mostly works. This is a video of the direct contribution to the electric field of a resonant one-half wavelength horizontal dipole. It starts with a series of still shots taken as I edited, compiled, and ran the application for a sequence of heights above ground. Then I demonstrated the application at yet another height. Finally I recompiled with a vertical (monopole) antenna pattern. I am currently working on code for the reflected portion of the E field. If I map the direct and reflected parts separately, then add them together with a ground reflectivity coefficient, I can model the E field over various soil types. http://bacona.design/video.html topmost video. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Good Evening, My "new" antenna worked very well. More noise, which was expected, and more contacts, which was gratifying. I built the dipole from recycled antennas. Most of my antennas fail at the feed point due to limbs bending under heavy snow loads. Others fail due to limbs flying in the wind. In any case I build up a stock of 1/4 wavelength wires for 20 and 40 meters. In the last year I built a 1/4 vertical with 20 1/4 wavelength radials, an inverted Y for 40 meters, as well as the most recent 20 meter dipole. I have a few more lengths of wire plus the fixings for a 40 meter resonant flat topped dipole. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, After a wet, cool week today feels very nice. Sunny skies, no wind, temperature rose to 79 F. It is nice to walk outside without the bugs around. The spiders eat them. The Canada jays are migrating to lower limbs eating more bugs. A few followed me around today as I inspected the cleared area. Elk found the opening last week and are locating what's edible. The sun did not send many flares this week, but there is a steady stream of ions on the way. When the sun dried things out I laid my newly built antenna on the roof, routed some coax from the outside into the radio room, and knotted guy rope on either end. I tied one end to the rope holding up my 1/4 wave vertical. I tied the other end to the rope holding up my other vertical antenna. Thus I did not need to waste a day shooting, and losing, sinkers to guide leader lines. I have never tried a resonant, flat topped dipole before. I've always had a rope at the feed point as well as one at both ends. This normally gives me an inverted V. So this antenna is more directive. It favors a swath from Upper Michigan down to northern Florida. On RBN I find a 6 dB difference between my 1/4 wave vertical and this new dipole. Good Evening, Rain gave the soil a fresh, spicy scent due to its heritage. The last of the large cedar trees were cut before WWII but the soil is made from generations of their needles and fallen timber. I took my laptop out into the forest to call a Pileated woodpecker. Good Evening, Conditions were so so. Moderate, slow QSB with a steady hiss. On twenty meters the signals were all down a bit, but my reach was better. Forty meters was noisier with deeper QSB. I rewrote some antenna modelling code I created a long time ago. Unwrapping the dipole algorithm was not too difficult. Then I got to the 1/4 wave vertical algorithm. The electric field equation has an exponential raised to an imaginary power. Euler's identity unwraps that into real and an imaginary parts. Normally you ignore the imaginary part. The resulting function creates its own problems by generating some unreal lobes. I'm trying to figure out how space can have a volume with less than no electric field. Hence the guards on my output. However, this code creates the electric field pattern of a 1/4 wave dipole antenna which matches standard antenna modeling images. Good Evening, It was a cool week with some fog, then a thunderstorm with an inch of rain. The forest enjoyed the moisture. Some of the ferns are turning yellow from a few 30 degree nights. Smoke has returned but not as thick as it was last week. The sun continues to be moderately active with no X class flares predicted. Solar flux is still high, it is simply less unsteady. Nonetheless, there should be QSB and some hissing. The sun is rapidly moving southward. Sunset is at 8:02 PM, forty minutes earlier than at the beginning of August. I posted the code necessary to calculate the electric field around a 1/2 wavelength dipole antenna. It will be used to create 3D mesh models of antenna radiation patterns; then animate them as the user changes any one of seven variables. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, The sun has numerous, complex sunspot groups. Curiously no strong flares are expected. That is an interesting point of view :) Flux is high and the auroral oval is bright. I expect a steady hiss interrupted by lightning static. Each morning this week the sky was red. Haze from the forest fires blew in after three days of hot weather. A cool breeze feels good although it is moving the smoke toward the Pacific. Rain would be nice but that's at least a month away. A foggy morning would lessen fire danger. I found the Gray Jays. In the winter they are common at the feeder and water basin along with Steller's Jays. In April they disappear. I started seeing immature Gray Jays when they dropped on the roof during flight training. That got me watching what is going on above me. The Steller's Jays stay mostly in the lower branches. The Gray Jays migrated upward into the mid to high canopy branches, 70 to 100 feet above me. I knew Band-tailed Pigeons lived up there, while crows visit now and then. Now I know the Gray Jays move up during spring and summer. I need to note when they drop down again. Scrub Jays do not live at this elevation. Good Evening, Twenty meters was open but filled with contesters. I was unable to find an open spot to run the net there. On forty meters there was room. There was also QRN from storms and moderate to deep QSB. I am grateful for my alarms; the heat was making me sleepy. The temperature jumped to near 100 degrees. It has since cooled to 96F. Good Evening, I searched for the name of the shrub outside my window. It feeds a lot of birds. I found oceanspray on the gardening link below. I have mentioned thimbleberries and huckleberries. The next link has a photo of thimbleberries. I found a few sites for red huckleberries too. The sun sent a few CMEs past us this week. An X class flare caused a radio blackout so the ionosphere is well charged. Solar cycle 25 is exceeding predictions. Another three to five years of high solar activity is possible. Good Evening, Both bands were better than last week. There was at least one storm on twenty meters with a few louder ones on forty. More QSB on forty meters but neither band was too bad. Mild weather reports with two incidents of rain in the Midwest. Both Ken and Roy mentioned substantial rainfall. Now they are on lawn duty for the rest of the month. I got little sleep this week. A curious rodent loves the night life, part of which is awakening me. About the size of a red squirrel; shaped like a kangaroo rat. Good Evening, It was a pleasant week. Temperatures rose to the low 80s. Humidity is high for the summer, around 60%. There was no rainfall but clouds touched the mountain for a while which is sufficient. Thimble berries and huckleberries are doing well. I have been sampling them one by one. Black raspberries are still in the future but it won't be long. The sun is well speckled and active. We are currently between CMEs. The next is due on Tuesday. I am hoping for Midwestern thunderstorms. They give me a measure of signals and provide a respite from their droughty conditions. I started smelling smoke around noon, this is the first time since mid April. Wind has been keeping it from NW Oregon. Solar flux should support comms. Good Evening, It was sunny and warm this week. I spent four days with saws improving my 2.4 GHz signal path. When we reset the dish earlier this year the alder did not have leaves. They grew to full size blocking the path. Now they are felled, limbed, and stacked; ready for the wood stove by winter. My work opened space for an inverted V, or doublet, and more sun. The sun tossed a few weak CMEs at us and is still spawning active sunspot groups. Oddly enough quiet conditions are predicted for this weekend. However, sunspot 3373 could send an X-class flare. And some days, he went on, were days of hearing every trump and trill of the universe. Some days were good for tasting and some for touching. And some days were good for all the senses at once. This day now, he nodded, smelled as if a great and nameless orchard had grown up overnight beyond the hills to fill the entire visible land with its warm freshness. Good Evening, There has been no rain this week. The last three mornings have been foggy but it was not dense enough to condense rain from the trees. Kevin, You were good on 20 meters with some deep QSB but OK copy. Then we got whacked by the sun pretty hard between nets and the story changed on 40 meters. I could hear you at first but your signal was below the noise peaks so your CW was getting chopped up and nearly uncopyable.
