Re: [Elecraft] Dead K3 RX, no Power Out

2016-06-11 Thread Don Wilhelm

Martin,

I would try giving each of the TMP cables a slight twist.
Secondly, I would remove and reseat the front panel board.

No guarantee that will correct it, but it is a good starting point.

I wonder why the circuit breaker tripped in the first place, though.
There's usually a reason, which can lead to unpleasant surprises.

Hi Todd,

Has there been a power cut?

No seriously, check if your rig is getting power OK.

Always start at the Power Station and work your way forward.

Check connectors and fuses.

Re: [Elecraft] Dead K3 all of a sudden

2016-03-20 Thread Gary Smith
Unsure of what may be the issue, but it would maybe be a worthwhile
thing to restore from your last good configuration that you stored
with the K3 utility. If you do that and there is still a problem,
then it is not something with your software setup and if so, the
answer would be outside the K3 or a failed part within the K3.

At least that would be one variable to be excluded.

[Elecraft] Dead K3 - Comes Alive!

2012-08-01 Thread Dr. William J. Schmidt, II
Well sure enough, the buys at Elecraft (Thanks Harold!!!) shipped me parts
overnight and my K3 came to life. They very smartly shipped a new Q2 (bad)
and the "K3 12DC Current Mod Kit". While my radio had the kit installed
from the factory, the kit had two very important parts. D35 was shorted in
my radio. D34 comes in the kit but is the same as D35. so there's my
replacement. But one additional part. the self-healing 1A fuse became my
bridge across the empty Q2 spot to test out the rest of the radio before I
installed the new Q2. It all worked perfect, and my K3 is back on track to
be on the air starting Saturday afternoon on J6. Now more than ever, I'm
looking forward to the trip. Don't let anyone tell the service at Elecraft
isn't first class.

[Elecraft] Dead K3

2012-07-30 Thread Dr. William J. Schmidt, II
Well after talking with support today, I returned home this evening and
removed D35. Sure enough, shorted. Then plugged in the radio and tested
it. Nothing. Made voltage checks around Q2. 13.8VDC at the source, 2.5V
at the Drain and 2.5V at the gate. Gate stays at 2.5V (well drops to 2.4V)
whit power on button pressed. but drops to 0V on the other side of R77 so I
know the front panel circuitry works. Definitely a bad Q2. Gotta get one
quick. Cant test beyond that. Elecraft Technical Support is simply second
to none!

That is odd. About the only thing one would expect to cause that is an
external power source of reverse polarity connected to J11...but then one
would expect F2 to blow before D35 was destroyed. Strange, especially when
nothing at all has been connected to J11.

But, how are you sure, short of disconnecting one end of D35 and measuring
resistance forward and reverse, that it *is* D35? Shorts anywhere downstream
of D34 would show identical results. C272 could be shorted...a trace in
the path could be shorted...C220 or J11 could be shorted (but then F2 should
blow).

Were it mine, there's no doubt what I'd do immediately...cut one lead of D35
and verify that the short is cleared on both sides of D34. If no fault is
detected, apply DC power and see if the radio will power up properly. That
would show no damage has been caused to Q2.

If there is still a ground fault shown, I'd cut D34 to isolate all of the path
to J11. It could be that D35 isn't the problem after all.

In any event, the solution should be trivial and quick since you don't need
to supply anything from J11. Worst case, cut D34 (not D35) to isolate all
possible faults and troubleshoot the short, some time later.

I was able to do some diagnostic work to determine that D35 is shorted. How
this could happen is a complete mystery? I've never had anything plugged
into J11 (the 12V accessory out jack), so don't quite understand this. The
trace from the end of D34 to RF choke RFC48 is a little over-heated but
still usable (well, I never had plans to use external power for anything so
it won't be a problem). I'll discuss this with tech support in the AM and
this may be as easy as lifting D35 and it's good to go. Maybe...

OTOH, since you are in a bit of a hurry (laving on Friday), and support has

In the meantime, check the obvious - remove the APP from the back of the

is a problem with the DC power cable. If you assembled that power cable,
take a look at the end of it - the blades of the connectors must be clipped

Thanks Don... In my haste, I omitted the "K3" off the front of the
"K3Support" email address on my post... so no telling where it went. My
fault.

I'll get the K3 apart tonight so I can do some troubleshooting from the
schematic. Will determine first if there is power inside the radio and how
far in. Then give support a call in the AM as you suggest.

The unfortunate part is that I spent weeks prepping for this trip and
thought I had everything working perfectly (including the antenna, radio,
and all of the laptop software and interfaces). This will be a full week
for me at work ahead of vacation so I won't have the time to really spend
troubleshooting like I would otherwise.

We will go back in November though...

Re: [Elecraft] Dead K3

2012-07-29 Thread Don Wilhelm
Bill,

Your "cc" to k3supp...@elecraft.com did not show on what I perceive as
your original post, so you may want to send something separate.
OTOH, since you are in a bit of a hurry (laving on Friday), and support
has to wade through the entire weekend's worth of email, you may do
better to phone 831/763-4211
first thing (8AM) California time - well, leave enough time for Dale
and Howard to settle down to their work positions and have a few sips of
thier morning beverage.

In the meantime, check the obvious - remove the APP from the back of the
K3 and check the voltage with your DMM - there is a possibility that
there is a problem with the DC power cable. If you assembled that power
cable, take a look at the end of it - the blades of the connectors must
be clipped securely over the spring fingers in the housing. If you need
a diagram of how it should look, check figure 29 on page 37 of the XV
transverter assembly manual -
http://www.elecraft.com/manual/Assembly%20Manual%20XV50,144,%20222%20Rev%20D.pdf

Re: [Elecraft] Dead K3

2012-07-29 Thread Dale Boresz
Another possibility is that the /PWR_ON line that biases on Q2 is not
being pulled low by the associated line to the Front Panel board due to
an intermittent connection on connector J30. Maybe try disconnecting and
then reconnecting the Front Panel board from the RF Board.

My guess from your 995 ohm resistance check, is a dead Q2 FDS6375. It will be
interesting to see.
I would post the K3 to Elecraft and have it when you get home. Good luck on
the trip.

Yep. Have three different supplies, tried all three (all power my other
radios just fine). I have the scope/ VOM/ current meter on the input now
looking for transients, etc. Nada. No crowbar on the power supply either
(so no short). I'm gonna have a look at that LP fuse now...

Re: [Elecraft] Dead K3

2012-07-29 Thread Dr. William J. Schmidt, II
Nope. Now when I push the power button it does nothing... no relay
clicking... nada... For a while, at least I heard the power relay close...
now nothing.

This is very irritating. I've tried three radios and power supplies in the
last year... to put something together that was a little lighter than
dragging my heavy Icom 756 proII with me... All three (different companies)
have failed either while in service or (in this case) before! In each case,
I spent a lot of money thinking I bought the best that could be had. I just
don't even know what to say. Now don't get me wrong, I have not given up on
the K3 yet... but things don't look good...

Thanks for the tip... Measured about 995 ohms at the connector, so it
appears D28 is still intact.

If you can, check the resistance across the K3 "12VDC IN" Power Pole
connections (after you've disconnected your Power Supply of course).

On my K3, an internal zener-like diode (D28 on the RF Board) evidently gave
up its life to protect the radio from an overvoltage, and evidently the
failure mode is a short circuit. This diode goes straight to ground
immediately after the 6A inline fuse. I think the fuse is an auto-resetting
fuse, so you can probably assume it is still completing the circuit for the
purposes of your resistance measurement. If you measure a dead short, the
culprit is likely D28.

Re: [Elecraft] Dead K3 Hi Jacked thread...

2008-10-19 Thread Ken K3IU

Good afternoon, Tom:

You haven't said, but are you using a "regular" 9 pin serial cable or a
USB-to-serial connection?
If you have the capability, use a "regular" serial cable between the
computer and the K3.

If you have not done so, I suggest that you re-download from the
internet both the K3 Utility program and the firmware elements. After
you download the firmware, check on your computer to see that you have
successfully downloaded all the elements. Check the help files in the K3
Utility program for guidance in troubleshooting.

When ready to upload the new firmware to the K3, get out of Advanced
Mode (View menu) and click on the "Send All Firmware to K3" button.

If you have tried all of these things and still have no luck, then I
suggest you send your problem to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: [Elecraft] Dead K3

2008-10-19 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Wow, I'm very sorry to hear that Gentlemen. I trust you've sent messages to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Dave, your experience with the K3 PCB has been addressed. A shipment of
boards with protrusions on the sides of the PCB in the wrong places was
received from (I understand) a new vendor. Obviously, that was missed when
the parts were received.

Check Errata B-4 to the KRX3 Assembly manual:

http://www.elecraft.com/manual/KRX3_Errata_Rev_B-4.pdf

It instructs builders to *carefully* file down the nubs that strike the
sides of the enclosure so the pcb fits properly.

Also, with reference to VFO B encoder issues, it's been discovered that a
small number of K3s can develop a short between the pins on the back of the
encoder and the main DSP board. The short is caused because, when plugging
the front panel assembly onto the main chassis, the force required to engage
the multipin connector J51 on the DSP board near the encoder can be enough
to flex the board forward to it strikes the pins on the little encoder
board.

The "fix" is also discussed in the above errata since Elecraft wants
everyone who installs the KRX3 to implement it if it wasn't done during the
initial build. It's in two parts. First, the pins behind the connector on
the back of the little pc board attached to the encoder are trimmed flush to
the board (there's a photo in the errata). That fixes the issue 99.9% of the
time since the main DSP board has to flex much farther to touch the encoder
with the pins trimmed. Secondly, Wayne added a nylon standoff to the design.
It mounts on the main DSP board near that connector and rests against the
front panel board so the DSP board cannot flex toward the encoder. An option
to the standoff is to add a bit of foam tape (like the white, double-sticky
Scotch "mounting" tape used for pictures, etc.) that is a few mm thick over
those pins. Leave the protective covering over one side and stick it onto
the pcb over the trimmed pins.

If you trim the pins and add a bit of insulation on the back of the encoder
pcb, the standoff should not be needed. Wayne included it to be absolutely
sure the problem was handled. If you'd like to install the nylon standoff,
I'm sure Elecraft will provide the parts if you drop a note to

hindsight, I wish I hadn't. The KRX3 did not go together well. There

I had considered either filing them off or drilling new holes in the
metalwork. However, I'm glad I didn't as my K3/KRX3 was returned to
Elecraft under warranty and I thought that making any changes might have
invalidated the warranty.

Someone mentioned this recently, and Eric's response was that they had
switched PCB suppliers and there was a issue that boards had 'pips' in
the wrong places.

He advised filing these off, as there are enough in the correct
locations to hold the board in place. It's important that the metal
cover and shield box make good contact, so if you have one of these
boards it's a good idea to do this.

K3 #250 here. I started up the utility 1.1.6.3 and the prg showed the
following: MCU 02.24; FPF 00.02; DSP1 00.00 and DSP2 NA.
I downloaded 2.46 and tried to upload the firmware. I had to do a
forced download and when it got to FPF, it failed as did the DSP 1 and
2. The Activity log shows:

Sending firmware file hppf0002.hix to FPF
Send FPF firmware failed at load address x
FPF progam load failed.

K3 still has no sound nor signals and HI RFI still in B window...

Re: [Elecraft] Dead K3

2008-10-19 Thread David Pratt
You have my sympathy, Tom. I had a perfectly working K3 until I
installed the KRX3. After I installed the KRX3, screwed everything back
together again and returned it to the shack to plug it in, I found all
sorts of error messages. As Elecraft were unable to resolve the problem
by e-mail I was asked to return it to Aptos for attention. That was two
months ago. Not only have I been without my K3 for two months but, it
cost me a small fortune to return it. Also, being outside the USA I will
be expected to pay for return shipping.

Understandably, I wish I had not bothered to get a KRX3 and will
certainly NOT be recommending anyone else get one unless they have a
specific reason for a sub receiver.
