Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Sub RX audio to right Line Out SOLVED

2014-04-30 Thread Buck - k4ia via Elecraft

In the interest of future readers, here is what I found.

I had the LIN OUT menu item set to NOR 10 as recommended. In fact, they
warn of going over that level. However, when you turn on the SUB RX,
the signal is split and you lose 3db. This can be heard in the
headphones. It seems it also affects the Line Out.

When I increased the LIN OUT level to 35, the Sub Rx could be heard in
the right channel of the Line Out. I have no idea how linear the LIN
OUT level setting is but I suspect that increase to 35 is what was
needed to overcome the attenuation that occurs when the Sub Rx switches in.

Now the issue is, the output seems unbalanced with the Main Rx signal on
the left channel of the Line Out jack being louder than the Sub Rx
signal on the right channel. I am able to compensate for this by
turning down the Main Rx gain control on the MicroHam MKII. I wasn't
able to even them out with the RF Gain control on the K3 but I will play
around with that some more.

Sub Rx works fine in the headphone jack on the front. This is the

Sub RX audio is present *only* when the SUB icon is displayed on

Check for audio directly at the LINE OUT jack and at the pigtail

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Sub RX audio to right Line Out SOLVED

2014-04-30 Thread Mike Harris

Sorry Buck but it doesn't sound solved to me.

I've been following this thread and have just for sanities sake done the
following test:

Line out = 7

Main and Sub RX set to frequency of my XG1 (approx 7040kHz)

XG1 set to 1uV out

Spectrogram set to stereo input

Windows sound mixer balanced L R channel

Both Sub and Main RX on CW both with 500Hz roofers and 400Hz DSP, both
filter gain compensation setting 4dB

Main RX level from Spectrogram = -82dB

Sub RX level from Spectrogram = -85dB

If it turn off Sub RX, main RX level increases to -79dB

Clearly there are measurement calibration issues here, I didn't inject a
fixed level test tone into each of the LR channels on the PC to check
the balance.

Never the less I would conclude there is still something very wrong with
your line out.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Sub RX audio to right Line Out SOLVED

2014-04-30 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

Mike's observations are the same as mine. Using the XG-3 on 20 meters
and slow AGC, I see no change in audio output on left (Main RX) when
dual RX is enabled. With dual RX enabled, both audio channels are
the same level. MENU: LIN OUT is NOR 10. and MK II has RX Main/RX Sub
at the same point (12:00 for measurements/comparisons like this -
typically 10:00 for normal operation).

Windows Sound Control Panel - Recording Devices - Line (microHAM CODEC)
Levels tab line level is set to 40 and balance is set for 40 on each
channel. Advanced tab |Default Format is set to: 2 channel, 16 bit,
48000 Hz (DVD Quality).

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Sub RX audio to right Line Out

2014-04-29 Thread Arie Kleingeld PA3A

Hi Buck,

You are talking about Line-out of the K3.
First question is: is it working ok with your headset on? So can you
hear the subRX that way?

If that is working as it should then do the next check:

First thing to look at: To what is the line-out connected?
If you connect it to a stereo computer speaker set, that is a good way
to check.
(Checking it by connecting it to a laptop mic-input is not a good check.
Some laptops have a mono mic input.)

page 37 of manual tells all the tricks

SUB AF gain normally sets the sub’s volume
level. Alternatively, SUB AF can be used as a
main/sub balance control (see CONFIG:SUB
AF). With stereo headphones or dual speakers,
you'll normally hear main on the left and sub on the
right. CONFIG:L-MIX-R selects various alternate
combinations of main/sub audio mixing.

CONFIG:SPKRS must be set to 2 if you use
stereo speakers; otherwise, set it to 1.
SUB RF gain normally sets the sub receiver’s
RF GAIN level. If this knob is assigned to main/sub
squelch (CONFIG:SQ MAIN), then RF gain for
main/sub is controlled by the main RF gain control.

hope that helps

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Sub RX audio to right Line Out

2014-04-29 Thread K4ia via Elecraft
I played with that setting to no avail. I am going into a Microham
KeyerII which has a separate audio line for the Sub Rx. If I plug
headphones into the Line Out jack on the back of the K3, I hear signals
on the left side but nothing on the right so I am convinced it is the
output from the K3 that is missing, not an issue with the computer or MKII.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Sub RX audio to right Line Out

2014-04-29 Thread Don Wilhelm

Buck,

Either plug known working computer speakers directly into the line out
jack or play some source into the input of the MicroHam KeyerII to make
certain it is working as you expect.
Often added devices do not behave as we expect them to. Check those out
before concluding the K3 is the problem.

I use the exact same setup, K3, MH MKII keyer, sub RX set to main, headphones

As someone stated, do make sure the sub is set to MAIN and NOT auxiliary.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Sub RX audio to right Line Out

2014-04-29 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

Buck,

Where (how) are you connecting between the K3 and MK II?

You should use a the stereo audio cable supplied with MK II to connect
the 3.5mm pigtail on the LINE OUT plug of the DB3-EL-K23 or K3R
cable set to the Sub RX jack on the back of MK II.

Sub RX audio is present *only* when the SUB icon is displayed on
the K3 display (DUAL or DIVERSITY). If the Sub RX is on and you
have audio in right headphone connected to the headphone jack but
no audio in the right channel (ring) of the LINE OUT (or tip of the
pigtail on the DB37-EL-K23/K3R) I would check L2 on the KIO3 Audio
I/O board.

Check for audio directly at the LINE OUT jack and at the pigtail
in case you've snagged the pigtail and broken a wire in either jack.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Sub RX audio to right Line Out

2014-04-29 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

If I turn on the Sub Rx and plug a set of headphones directly into

only.

If you hear audio only on left/main when connected directly to the
Line Out jack you are probably correct but try a pair of powered
(computer) speakers to make sure the level isn't low.

So I don't think it is the MH cable pigtail

FYI - the Sub Rx pigtail is Sub RX only with audio on the tip to
match to the single channel connections of the Sub RX jack on MK II
(and MK2R+).

I will check L2. I guess you are telling me it could be open? Why
would that happen?

Yes, L2 could be open - of course you could also have bent missing
pins on the KIO3 boards and on the front panel. However, I have seen
several of the KIO3 RF chokes open and have never found a good
explanation.

[Elecraft] K3 - Sub RX audio to right Line Out

If no antenna tuner, must one install the BNC connector? I don't see ever
needing to connect the sub rx antenna to any but the transmit antenna. The

I'm confused. Isn't the antenna tuner connected to TX antenna? Are you saying
you don't want to be able to distinguish between the second RX and the MAIN RX?

Suppose I was working cross band and had it the way you want it. How would I be
able to determine which band I was hearing? Or if I were to work split in a
pile up, how would I know if that carrier I hear was on top of the DX or on his
listening frequency. That would really make it hard on the pileup police.

I really would like to know why you want to convert it to mono. No kidding.

This is for specifying the alternate antenna input for the KRX3. Not
selecting the alternate antenna input is none.

I've found all sorts of uses for the BNC that I didn't envision when I
installed it. Since you don't have the KAT3, I encourage you to
seriously consider adding the BNC with the KRX3. It comes with the KRX3
and only costs another 30 minutes or so in the installation.

I had my KRX3 initially set up with the KAT3. Later in the development
and testing cycle the BNC cable became available, and I installed it.

I'm leaving it with the BNC!

If no antenna tuner, must one install the BNC connector? I don't see ever
needing to connect the sub rx antenna to any but the transmit antenna.
The

firmware makes one choose either BNC or antenna tuner. There is no choice
for none.

I'm confused. Isn't the antenna tuner connected to TX antenna? Are you
saying
you don't want to be able to distinguish between the second RX and the MAIN
RX?

Suppose I was working cross band and had it the way you want it. How would
I be

able to determine which band I was hearing? Or if I were to work split in a
pile up, how would I know if that carrier I hear was on top of the DX or on
his

listening frequency. That would really make it hard on the pileup police.

I really would like to know why you want to convert it to mono. No kidding.

I'm not sure why you would want to select 'none' for the second RX antenna
 You wouldn't hear much.
It appears the SUB RX can have the same antenna as the first RX or the BNC
below ANT 2 for a separate antenna.

We used to go to Zone 2 up on James Bay for CQ WW SSB with either a TenTec
Omni D or a Corsair (it was years ago) and on 40M we would TX around 7050
and listen 7050 7195 with the remote VFO. It mixed audio to mono
headphones. Didn't really care what freq the station was calling on - just
work them. Hopefully the EU VE stations were on 7050 and the US stations
were on 195!

Some people might find left ear / right ear from main RX / sub RX .. I
used to find that very distracting before I kind of became used to it.

And . ask me my opinion in person some time about my thoughts on pileup
police . About the same as DX nets .. but that's not a topic for
here!  :^}

Me too, Kyle. I'm going with the BNC connector...
