Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Question - Manual Mode Light is Flashing
Andy, I kept the KAT500 in auto tune mode & I think I solved the problem...1) a loose plug in the back of the KAT500 & 2) probably snow or frozen participation on the antenna connection. Not sure what finally solved it, but all seems to be well During the contest so far. [Elecraft] KAT500 Question - Manual Mode Light is Flashing
"When I have the Tuner in By-Pass Mode for an antenna with a low SWR, even when making small changes in the frequency, the Tune switches to MAN (Manual Mode) and the MAN light is flashing. How do I get it to stay in By-Pass Mode." One reason for flashing MAN is that KAT500 has entered auto tune mode and is waiting for sufficient power to start the solution search. I don't know if this is the reason in your case. Do you have the ability to log the commands your Flex is sending to KAT500? Is it possible your Flex commanded autotune (FT;)? I never run my KAT500 in BYP mode after I found defects in the antenna selection logic when BYP mode is active. I always run in MAN mode and MAN mode with bypass active is electrically identical to BYP mode as far as the tuning solution is concerned. [Elecraft] KAT500 Question - Manual Mode Light is Flashing
Set up: Flex 6500 with KAT500 & KPA500 using Elecrafts recommended settings When I have the Tuner in By-Pass Mode for an antenna with a low SWR, even when making small changes in the frequency, the Tune switches to MAN (Manual Mode) and the MAN light is flashing. How do I get it to stay in By-Pass Mode. This recently started and not sure what changed? A setting in the KAT500 Config Mode? I've never used an AUX cable between any of my Elecraft gear, only the keying interrupt lines (as RCA-RCA cables). Frequency detection in the tuners and amps is plenty good enough to switch near instantaneously and call up memorized settings. A dit or a bang on the mic is more than enough. What IS needed is to either switch the keying interrupt line or loop it through both amps, depending on the keying logic for the other amp. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 question: using the KAT500 with multiple transceivers using a coax switch
I use two transceivers with my station. The K3S, P3, KPA500 and KAT500. Also have a Tentec Eagle which is the 2nd transceiver. I have a A / B switch in the coax line between the transceivers output and the input to the KPA500. The AUX buss is connected in the K3S configuration. The Eagle has only the RF coax to the A / B switch as does the K3S. There is also an AMP KEY line from the Eagle to the KAT500. {See Fred Cady book on this point.} This assures the Eagle when in TUNE mode does not activate the KPA500 as the PTT line is opened in the KAT500. I can switch radios without any issues. However, If I choose to use the Eagle, the K3S must be OFF. Otherwise the system is seeing and responding to the frequency of the K3S VFO supplied by the AUX Buss. When using the Eagle, the Amp and ATU respond to the applied RF. Thus...only one radio at a time is powered ON. This also prevents transmitting into a dead short thus from having the A / B switch in the wrong position. With this configuration, the KPA500 and the KAT500 will switch bands and resolve a match automatically. But..you must understand the station you wish to use must be ON and the other station OFF. I'm sure there are other ways to do this but mine works for me. 73 Bob, K4TAX On 6/1/2019 11:18 AM, Nr4c wrote: The KAT500 has no clue what provides the RF when sensing the Freq. Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 question: using the KAT500 with multiple transceivers using a coax switch
No, but it does respond to frequency changes from the K3 which may provide some strange results. If the K3 is on and you spin the big knob while using the KWM2, the KAT will respond to the K3’s QSY. If you change bands on the K3, BOTH the KAT and the KPA will also change bands. And (most strangely), if you power off the K3, shortly the KPA will switch to 60 meters. The latter occurs because the K3 pulls the band lines up to internal Vcc (0V when power is off), which is the combination for 60 meters. In other words, leaving the aux cable connected from the K3 to the KAT and KPA may have some unintended consequences. The best description for connecting multiple transceivers to the KPA500/KAT500 combo is in Fred Cady’s book “The Elecraft KPA500 Amplifier and KAT500 Tuner". You might want to refer to it when setting this up. 73! Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 question: using the KAT500 with multiple transceivers using a coax switch
True. However, the advantage of the K3/KAT500 (assuming you have the AuxBus connected) is that the KAT500 will follow the K3 frequency without transmitting. KPA1500 tuner does the same thing. [Elecraft] KAT500 question: using the KAT500 with multiple transceivers using a coax switch
Greetings all and thank you for a great list with lots of great information! Help me understand something on the KAT500. I have the Elecraft “Dream” setup as I think it is called with the K3s, KAT500, KPA500, and P3. I love it. I have trained the KAT500 according to instructions. My question is, now that the KAT500 is trained, can I plug in any source (transceiver) and the tuning will be remembered? That is, it really doesn’t matter what the source is, the KAT500 doesn’t know or care and the source device will get the benefit of the KAT500? What I want to do is take the cable that goes from my KPA500, run it through an Alpha Delta 4B coax switch, then to the KAT500. Another connection to the coax switch will come from a Collins KWM-2 I recently purchased. I want the KWM-2 to get the benefits of the KAT500 tuner. So I just change the switch to decide which transceiver is connected to the KAT500. Sound correct? If not, suggestions? Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 question
Jerry: Here’s an approach that I use for K3 remote operation (including control of the KAT500) that you may find appropriate for your needs as well. I use my K3 almost exclusively through the K3/0-Mini. The radio site is in Southeast Georgia and my primary residence is in Massachusetts. I’ve configured my HF station with the following: 1. K3/0-Mini controls the K3 through Remote Rig’s RRC-1258Mkii devices. 2. The Remote Rig RC-1216H provides a web-based control of the KPA500, providing a web screen that looks like the front panel of the KPA500, allowing me to control the amplifier as if I were in front of it without using a PC in the shack. 3. For the KAT500, I’m using a Lantronics Serial-to-Ethernet converter that allows me to run Elecraft’s KAT500 Utility software on a computer in Massachusetts controlling the KAT-500 directly in Georgia through the KAT500’s serial port. The Elecraft software provides all of the status information of the KAT500 plus control of all functions, such as turning the unit on/off, setting which of the three antenna port to use (e.g. dummy load, yagi, etc.), bypassing the tuner, noting the SWR of the antenna/band I’m on when transmitting, etc. A prime reason for taking this approach is so I can ensure that the KAT500 antenna port selected when shutting down the tuner is port 1 which has a dummy load attached. Since I’m not at the radio site, selecting the dummy load provides at least some additional isolation for the KPA500 and K3 between the Polyphaser attached to the grounding system at the ground plate entrance where all coax cables and DC lines (rotor control, Preamp on/off, etc.) enter the shack through various Polyphaser devices. A dummy load also provides an appropriate load for testing power output before going ‘live’ with the Elecraft software providing real time measurement of performance. 4. The Orion rotor’s serial port is also fed through the Lantronics Serial-to-Ethernet converter (it is a five port device; I’m using two), allowing me to run PstRotatorAz.exe to control the rotor directly from Massachusetts. 5. I can turn on/off devices in the shack using the West Mountain Radio R4005i which allows web-based control of up to five separate devices by providing a 12 VDC output to on any of the five available ports. The Orion is turned on/off through this device using West Mountain Radio’s PWR AC Controller attached to Port 1, which is a device using 12VDC to switch 120VAC. Anderson Power Poles provide connections to the R4004i’s five ports and the PWR AC, and each of the five ports of the R4005ican be individually configured for when the ’soft’ fuse on each port is opened. There are some network configuration setups required at the radio site’s router, such as configuring port forwarding appropriate ports to various devices to make this work, plus DDNS to allow for connection from the outside world (WAN) without having to know the external IP address at the radio site. An alternative would be to run the KAT500 software on a computer in the shack and then connect to that PC through remote access software such as Team Viewer or LogMeIn. This approach would probably be simpler to set up than what I’ve done (no setup of port forwarding within the router), but prefer my approach because PCs can fail and require reboot which can be problematic if you’re not at the site and won’t be there for some time. Note that I don’t need any PC to be on in the shack to have total control of my HF Station. Overall, I’m very satisfied with this approach. I hope in the future that Remote Rig will provide a firmware update to the RC-1216H to add the ability to control the KAT500 through a web interface just as is done for the KPA500. Such an approach would eliminate the need for a Serial-to-Ethernet converter as well as allows control of the KAT500 with a iPhone or iPad. You don't have to play with that 15 pin acc. or anything else. There is a program on the Elecraft site that you host to the control site. Just pecking a button in the program will turn it on/off. Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 question
Not thru, but if you control a power supply from the K3, that will do it. I bought but haven't yet installed a West Mountain Rig Runner model 4020S+ that switches power to other outlets when one "master" device is switched on. Or use the K3 back panel RCA 12V connector to activate a relay that provides power to other station devices. The KAT500 can at times draw a bit more than the 500 ma or 1A provided by the K3 12V RCA connector. 73 de Dick, K6KR Sent from my iPhone > On Jul 13, 2016, at 14:10, Jerrywrote: > > Greetings all, > > > > Is it possible to be able to power on and off the KAT500 through the K3? > > > > Best regards, > > > > Jerry, W1IE > > __ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html > Message delivered to d...@elecraft.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Sounds like the frequency counter detects new frequencies and switches over to the settings stored for that new frequency (that's why you hear the relays clicking). Or it is going into self-protecting mode ... 73, Olli Contest, DX radio projects: http://www.dh8bqa.de Am 29.11.2014 16:54, schrieb Tom Blahovici: Hi Yes erased the 80m and then did a bunch of tunes across the band, all OK. Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 question
It depends on the antenna impedance (the unmatched or SWR measured with teh ATU in bypass). If the unmatched antenna SWR exceeds 10:1, at 600 watts, the ATU might be faulting to protect itself. What does your KAT500 fault table say? The ATU is rated to match antennas with 10:1 SWR at 600 watts, 3:1 SWR at 1000 watts. If the unmatched SWR exceeds 10:1, the ATU might disconnect the amp at a lower power to protect itself from destructive current through its inductors. It will not match a 20:1 load at 1000 watts. 73 de Dick, K6KR -Original Message- From: Tom Blahovici [mailto:tom...@videotron.ca] Sent: Saturday, November 29, 2014 7:54 AM To: Dick Dievendorff Cc: jsdroys...@nc.rr.com; elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 question Hi Yes erased the 80m and then did a bunch of tunes across the band, all OK. You don't want remnants of the erroneous settings in those memories, or you'll keep finding them. Then leave the ATU in mode MAN so that it selects from previously found tuning solutions as you QSY across the band. As for how you got there - I can speculate, but I don't know anything about your path from ATU to antennas. It probably matched a different impedance at some point in the past. I might get that result here by having an external antenna switch in the wrong position and use the KAT500 to match my 15 meter beam on 20 meters, and then change my antenna switch. You probably don't want the ATU in mode AUTO very often. After antenna configuration changes, erase the tuner memories on the affected bands, and tune at a few spots on the band. Then let the ATU choose from those settings by frequency, which it will do in mode MAN. 73 de Dick, K6KR On Nov 29, 2014, at 06:17, jsdroys...@nc.rr.com jsdroys...@nc.rr.com wrote: Our KAT500 (used with K3 and KPA500) seems to have forgotten its correct memories for the 20 m band or maybe developed new erroneous memories. Hi All - On the KAT500 - what antenna port is operational when the unit is powered off? Is it the last one selected prior to power off, or does it operate like the LDG AT-600 where it always reverts to a specific antenna port (in that model, ANT2) at power off? Yes, couldn't find it again ... and, I too have stumbled into that refrain many times and not just with Elecraft manuals. What would be nice are user manuals that are web-based (not PDF), that are heavily hyper-linked with cross references, side-bars, detail pages, and so on. It takes a lot of work to do such a thing but it is very nice when well done. I wonder if Elecraft is interested in pursuing such a documentation effort. I submit that it is useful for the larger more comprehensive manuals like for the K3 and KX3. Other manuals are so short with more narrow topics and limited extent that such hyper-linking is not as useful. Alternatively, maybe this would be something some customers might take on. I am retired and have the experience for such things having done it in the past for our company but I think I lack the depth and even width (OK, length too) of knowledge to do justice to the effort with Elecraft rigs that is needed. I should say though that it is a lot of work especially when you consider adding new material to an existing document for additional detail or new information. 73, phil, K7PEH On Jan 7, 2014, at 10:23 AM, Jim Bennett w6...@mac.com wrote: Thanks folks - I knew I read it in the manual at one time but couldn't find it again! Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Question
I have all editions of the KE7X manuals (K3 and KX3) since the beginning -- these are not hyperlinked. No, that is not anywhere close to what I am suggesting. Let me describe a few features of how such a thing is put together or at least this is the kind of thing I have worked with in the past. --- The document is presented both in forward form (just like reading the paper document for example) and inverted form. --- Inverted means that the document is fully 100 percent indexed. --- Indexed entries (remember, every single token/word is indexed are given attributes, some are automatically created. --- Automatic attributes include the tagging of words as being regular English parts of speech such as articles, verbs, etc. --- A database is created that contains all text (note, this is done differently for different kinds of documents). --- Part of this database are support of connections. For example, connected topics together into a hierarchical network. --- Connections are usually manually done so take time and a degree of subject knowledge and creativity. --- There are also external connections to other information of a related type. --- There are a variety of lookup and reading features such as keyword or topic and so on. Remember, most things are linked. I have used a variety of technology as the server side support for such hyperlinked documents. For example, both xml based data structures and relational database technology is used. The idea of this approach (from my experience) grew out of an analysis method called requirements tracing. There are some very good (and, very expensive) requirements tracing applications available. It takes a document (say, a defense department RFP) and generates the database, indexes, keywords, and so on. Some requirements are identified and tagged where as others need to be manually identified. Tracing means linking requirements together in a manner that allows extensions and back tracing. Back tracing is started from some deep and derived requirement statement to find the full ancestry of other requirements leading to this requirement. 73, phil On Jan 7, 2014, at 10:56 AM, Rose elecraftcov...@gmail.com wrote: Phil, Google KE7X manuals - I think you'll find just what you're looking for. 73! Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Question
Hyperlinking has its own limits; I have seen documents with so many hyperlinks so as to be difficult to read. Searching, on the other hand, doesn't require the author to try to anticipate all possible document uses and provides a cleaner interface. I opened Search in Acrobat 9 (name varies with version), entered bypass into the search box and had the answer in about twenty seconds. Note that this isn't a read the manual post, rather more of a there's already a solution for this post... [Elecraft] KAT500 question
Howdy K3' people: I have a KAT500. The Auto green LED is lit. I have previously tuned to the best it could get on 17m. This morning it is drizzling. The 450 ladder can sometimes act up when it is raining. So I begin a JT9, one-minute long, sequence. Next I hear a little chatter and see the Red-LED come on for SWR=3. The Auto LED is now flashing. No tuning is taking place and the one-minute transmission finishes. I press hold the XMIT/TUNE button and the KAT500 finds a nice SWR of 1.1 . Next sequence comes around and the K3 switches to xmit. The KAT500 chatters maybe once and the Red SWR LED comes on again. The Auto LED is now flashing. I can do nothing about this while the K3 is transmitting. Technically I should kill the XMIT and correct the SWR problem. We all know this. Fortunately I was running but 5 watts on the JT9-1 mode so I don't believe I did any damage. When I used my Palstar AT2K tuner, and it was raining, I'd see the VSWR climb, and knowing the cause, would just manually turn a knob and keep the SWR down. Bob, it sounds like rain is changing the characteristics of that ladder line and so altering the tuning solution required at the KAT500. The blinking MODE light says it's ready to tune once you apply enough RF power. Five watts won't do it. The KAT500 cannot tune with less than 10 watts of RF applied (20 watts is required for the most accurate tuning). 73 Ron AC7AC -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of KD7YZ Bob Sent: Monday, December 24, 2012 8:52 AM To: K3 List Subject: [Elecraft] KAT500 question Howdy K3' people: I have a KAT500. Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 question
You don't have to keep that power level, Bob. You only need it if the KAT500 needs to retune, and then only for the retune cycle. For that you might QSY a few KHz to a clear spot although between five and twenty watts you are only talking about a one S-unit difference in signal. The next thing is to find out why your antenna is so sensitive to moisture. There are treatments some fellows use on window line that help it repel water and so not detune it so much. Or is there a tree branch that touches the antenna when it's wet with fresh rain. Normally, rain alone won't detune an antenna enough to matter. 73 Ron AC7AC ---Original Message- On Monday Claire used a Straight-Key to send: -Original Comment--- The blinking MODE light says it's ready to tune once you apply enough RF power. Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 question
It seems like I've heard someone suggest that spray-on car wax does a good job of making the ladder line real slippery. I haven't tried it yet, but I have two ladderline pieces on my NVIS loop.
