Re: [Elecraft] Whaddayaknow... passed the Extra...OT
I've taught two general and two extra class classes. I love doing it. I've also taught the tech class's, but the general and extra are fun. Those taking the class get very committed to not failing their classmates. Last Extra class I had 10 students, all ten took and passed, including one ham who is blind. One of the best nights I've ever had in ham radio. Re: [Elecraft] Whaddayaknow... passed the Extra
My response to your question, Jim, echoes Don's. I expected to teach electronics - basic RF and dc circuits - and ended up studying all about various operating practices I had never explored. Things like satellite communications (including calculating orbits) and a whole bunch of digital modes. I don't recall anything in the Extra test that would qualify the individual to work on a rig, much less troubleshoot or design a basic rig like we had in years previously. But that's not limited to Ham tests. Years ago I obtained a commercial radiotelegraph license - the license required to operate CW at shore stations and aboard ships. It was heavy with questions testing my knowledge of RF circuits and how to properly adjust, troubleshoot and repair transmitters and receivers. More recently, I obtained GMDSS operator's and maintainer's licenses. GMDSS is what replaced the radio officer and his CW rig on ships. It replaced CW on 600 meters with SSB on the "short waves" as the primary means of communicating with shore and other vessels in an emergency. Again, there was nothing asked of circuit knowledge as in the former radiotelegraph licenses. Instead, it was all about interfacing "boxes" and how to "troubleshoot" problems in digital systems (including demonstrating the ability to convert between Binary, HEX, Octal and decimal number systems using a pencil (no calculators). On the operating side were extensive questions about how to choose the best frequency across the HF spectrum to communicate over the required distance depending upon the time of day and point in the sunspot cycles, etc. "Radiomen" (and women) today - Amateur and Commercial - are no longer expected to know much about what goes on "under the hood" of the gear, even those licensed to "maintain" critical systems. "Maintenance" has become a process of diagnosing which pc board or box has failed and replacing it. That doesn't mean that it's not important for *someone* to know how circuits work, just that the FCC is no longer testing for that knowledge. Re: [Elecraft] Whaddayaknow... passed the Extra
Jim, If I can jump in here with some comments please. The current Extra class (and all other classes as well) are more oriented toward operating practices than to detailed technical knowledge. Basic electrical laws and knowledge are not really required to pass the test. So, questions about ohms law or how to calculate power can be ignored if the applicant can excel at answering all the questions about operating and FCC rules correctly. I cannot judge whether this is all good or bad, but the engineer in me says that the Extra class candidate should possess at least some knowledge of basic electrical laws, formulas and circuits - that is what sets the Extra class apart from the other license classes. Quite another point is the multiple choice question format - it is an easy matter for those with a good memory to simply memorize the question pool with no understanding of the principles behind the questions. To really administer a test with drawings and other facets that communicate a knowledge of the subject requires examiners who will impartially evaluate the tests with the many variants that can arise from different applicants - it requires informed judgment, and that is not a task that can be trusted to the current group of VEs since they are not trained that way. So I see the exam as sitting between a 'rock and a hard place'. Decisions must be made for the sake of both the applicants and the examiners. The majority of new Extra Class hams are no longer the experimenting kind, but they should be informed operators, and (much to my disappointment) they are not the 'techies' of electronics that the Extra class licensees used to be. It is obvious from some of the questions posed by Extra Class hams that they simply memorized the question pool rather than attempting to understand the basic principles, and that part is saddening to me. Unfortunately, I do not know of an easy cure other than reverting to the qualified FCC examiners of old times. 73, Don W3FPR Jim Wiley wrote: > So, Ron, what do you think of the Extra exam today? I would be interested in your honest assessment, mostly because I am curious, and also because I am one of the members of the NCVEC Question Pool Committee that wrote the questions for the current pool. We always value comments (good or bad) from instructors, as it gives us an opportunity to fine tune the pools to better reach our intended audience. If something is too easy, we need to know that, and conversely, if something is too difficult or obscure, we need to know that too. Mostly, we care whether or not, in your opinion, a person who passes the exam is prepared to assume the responsibilities of the license. Not an expert, to be sure, but with a clear understanding of the rules and privileges, as well as the technical challenges presented by the license. However, be careful when evaluating the questions, because it is easy to forget that persons such as yourself tend to have years of experience, and the person taking the test probably doesn't have anything like that to fall back on. In other words, an exam question or concept that is "dead nuts easy" for you because you have been using that formula or method every day may be brand new (and difficult to grasp) for a person taking the exam. Consider each question as if you had never, or at least only in the briefest sense, encountered that particular subject before. And yes, every time I teach a class, I learn a whole bunch more than the students! Whoever said that the best way to really learn a subject was to teach it hit the nail on the head! Oh, and by the way, I passed my Extra in the early 70's too. I was originally licensed as a novice in 1959, then onward to Tech a year later, then General about 2 years after that, then Advanced in the late 60's. Getting to be an OF. Thanks. - Jim, KL7CC Ron D'Eau Claire wrote: > I passed the Extra back in the 1970's. Twenty years later my local Ham club > was looking for license class instructors. Re: [Elecraft] Whaddayaknow... passed the Extra
I passed the Extra back in the 1970's. Twenty years later my local Ham club was looking for license class instructors. I thought it'd be fun to do a whiz-bang demo of basic circuit theory for new Novices or Techs. But they wanted someone to teach Extra theory. Okay, that's what they needed and I was there to help. Had I known what I was getting into I might not have been so agreeable. (Isn't that true of most things?) I suspect I learned a lot more than my students. I've always subscribed to the theory that a good teacher has to know at least 10X what he/she intends to teach so I was soon digging through piles of texts on the various subjects touched upon in the study guide - and the Extra exams had changed greatly since I passed the test. It's said that we teach what we, ourselves, most need to learn. It was a real boon to me. Not just in getting 'up to date' but I got a real feeling of satisfaction to hear from each student as he/she passed the Extra test. So, if want to learn and the opportunity arises to help someone pass the test... Re: [Elecraft] Whaddayaknow... passed the Extra
It was exciting, years ago, when I upgraded to General (at the FCC office) and was a lot of work to get Advanced, but I found Extra to be rather anti-climatic. After passing the Advanced written test, I found the Extra written to be somewhat unchallenging. While waiting for the Advanced test to be given, I took and accidentally passed the 20 wpm code test. A month later, I passed the Extra theory and that was that. My license upgrades had come to an end. Looking back, I'm glad to have my Extra. It makes life much easier. Congratulations! I just received my ARRL Extra Class study book yesterday and hope to one day post a similar message to the reflector. I originally intended to just get a Technician license a few years ago so I could use 2m on my motorcycle. I had such a great time I went and took the General test the following month. Didn't use it for 2 years and then finally got an HF antenna up in October and used an old ICOM transceiver borrowed from a friend. The K3 was purchased a few months later. Now I'm studying for the Extra Class. Guess I'm hooked. Just wanted to pass along my congratulations as well. I recall very well the day I passed my Extra class and how exciting it was. For me, it was even more motivation to be the best I could be at whatever it was I doing with regard to amateur radio. And, I am still not the best I can be at anything. It is a continual journey and that is what makes this hobby so much fun. Again, congratulations and I hope to run into you on the air whether it be CW, SSB or whatever and it is the whatever that is important. Re: [Elecraft] Whaddayaknow... passed the Extra
I'll throw this comment out before I get to reading all the replies...my method 20+ years ago was to get on the air every day no matter what. Practice makes perfect in anything you do. CW is no different. Get on the air no matter how slow or fast or crappy or perfect you send or receive. Someone out there will respond back to your CQ eventually and there is no looking back from that day forward. You'll miss letters, words, ask for repeats, miss tons of info but don't give up or get pissed off. Keep at it and you will see by the end of the summer that you will be hauling bootie with smokin fast CW. I went from 0 to 31 WPM in the first year that I was licensed (1987). Re: [Elecraft] Whaddayaknow... passed the Extra
If you can copy *most* QSO's on the Ham bands, you're more than qualified to work anyone on the Ham bands. I'm a commercial and amateur radiotelegraph licensee. To get my commercial I had to be able to copy 20 WPM code groups, not plain text: letter and punctuation combinations that meant nothing such as :;!() as a code group. (Yes, back then we had to know all the arcane punctuation marks). That got me past the FCC examiner, but it's no measure of my ability to work CW, either as a Ham or as a commercial operator. It is, at best, an indicator of some CW proficiency. >From the standpoint of a "commercial" CW operator, someone who can exchange contest QSO's at 40 WPM may well be a CW "Idiot". Computers are idiots and some can do as well. CW competency means you can think and talk using Morse just as you can using your native language. You can "listen" to the other station and you can reply and ask questions just as if you were in an "eyeball" QSO. Many extremely competent contest and DX-chasing CW ops cannot do that. If contesting is your interest is in contesting and DX-ing, focus on learning to follow a very simple exchange. But, if your interest is in exchanging information beyond the "formula QSO" you need to think and talk Morse. In that case you will find that 99.99% of Amateur QSOs happen at less than 20 WPM. Actually 15 WPM is FB almost all the time. So, once you have enough speed to copy *most* QSOs, get on the air, and just being on the air will increase your CW speed dramatically. Back when I worked on passing 5 WPM for my Novice ticket, I spent over a *year* just learning all the characters. I passed my Novice test at an FCC office (this was in '52 when all license tests were given in front of an FCC examiner) in the Spring - probably in April - and got my license in May. My license was good for only 1 year and was not renewable so I had some motivation. But my *only* training was "on the air". I passed the 13 WPM General Class license exam that August - 4 months later - before the next school term started. It was a few years later - about '57 - that I passed that horrendous 20 wpm test complete with all those punctuation marks and it *was* tough because Hams didn't use punctuation! I had to do it the hard way - practicing on my own. My point is that there's no training like just using the skill on the air! 73 & have fun! Especially L I think it might have been on the 5wpm Gordon West tape, he said to think of 'la LA la la.' Works great for 5wpm! But not at 20. I can hardly hear an L and not say that in my head while the next character is coming at me. I seriously wish I could erase all the code in my head and start from scratch at a faster speed. Retraining is really hard! Congrats on the extra... that's fantastic! Very definitely Don't even think of dots and dashes, or of shorts and longs. Think of it as learning an alphabet (which you already know!) of sounds which is all you have to learn Instead of a visible written symbol for the letter, you're learning an audible pattern for the letter. An "e" sounds like "dit". A "t" sounds like "dah". An "i" is "didit" and NOT "dit dit". "didah" is an "a"... etc. Some people learned by little phrases that sound like the characters. Example: "Charlie got it" (dahdidahdit = "c", or "charlie") This requires translating the sound into a phrase, then translating the phrase into the letter. That's an extra mental step and I don't recommend it. > Hopefully > if I get good enough, I can decipher entire words just by how the string of > code sounds instead of listening for each letter and copying that way. That will come eventually, once you are completely familiar with the alphabet, numerals, and a few punctuation marks. Most of all, it's practice that makes perfect... unfortunately true here, too. Re: [Elecraft] Whaddayaknow... passed the Extra
Hi gang, Just so you all know, I am in the process of learning CW. Not because I have too as someone else mentioned, but because I want to learn something that I feel is an integral part of the amateur experience. Hopefully within a few months, I'll be proficient enough to send and copy at 15wpm. I'm actually learning at 25wpm, but I don't want to burn myself out too quickly. Interestingly enough, I actually find it easier learning the alphabet for how it sounds as a complete letter, and not as dots and dashes. Hopefully if I get good enough, I can decipher entire words just by how the string of code sounds instead of listening for each letter and copying that way. 73, James KC2UEE On Mon, Mar 9, 2009 at 3:41 PM, Bruce McLaughlin wrote: > Congratulations James on your fine accomplishment. Re: [Elecraft] Whaddayaknow... passed the Extra
I couldn't agree with you more, Dick. What really impresses me is the number of obviously new extras I hear on the air sending very slow speed CW. It almost sounds like the old novice band. Obviously, they are learning CW, much like many of us learned CW by finding the courage to practice new found skills during on the air qsos. My hat is off to those operators. They are attempting to become proficient in CW not because they were required to but because they really want to. That is real motivation and they should be congratulated for it. Come on, the CW versus no CW war is long over. Times change. Need change. It's way past time for us to also change. Congratulations James, and if you want to practice your cw... email me.. or catch me on the air.. I'd be happy to match your speed, and practice with you... K? And you know, there are a lot of extra's around that passed the written part, first.. then passed the cw test later.. and I don't necessarily mean the cw test administered at the test session.. although there were some that did that too... but the cw test that comes around ever qso.. and that is simply having a fun converstation with someone. Good for you James, hang in... and if you care to try cw for speed try a bit of a contest here and there... that works pretty well too... FB James You're certainly in a situation that calls for some innovative thinking to have a working antenna. I hope the MP-1 and Buddipole at least let you get on the air. Best wishes for a new house with a good rf QTH. 73, Bob N6Wg - Original Message - From: "James Sarte" To: "'Bob Tellefsen'" ; Sent: Sunday, March 08, 2009 11:54 AM Subject: RE: [Elecraft] Whaddayaknow... passed the Extra > Hi Bob, > > Thanks for your email! Hi Bob, Thanks for your email! Not sure what I'll do for an encore... I think I'm pretty set for now. Perhaps my next move will involve buying another house (sold my first one, and now in an apartment), where I can actually put up a real antenna instead of my little MP-1 or Buddipole. :) 73, James KC2UEE -Original Message- From: Bob Tellefsen [mailto:n...@comcast.net] Sent: Sunday, March 08, 2009 2:52 PM To: James Sarte; elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Whaddayaknow... passed the Extra Congratulations, James.
