[Elecraft] OT National Hearing Test

This test not unlike most of our “pick the signal out of the noise”
experiences.

Re: [Elecraft] OT National Hearing Test

2015-12-21 Thread David Ahrendts
Nope. I’m in the evil, ugly TV news business. I plead guilty to promoting
things I find interesting and this was one — it is a hearing test based on
ambient audio interference and sequences of three numbers progressively buried
in the noise. Not unlike what we do everyday in amateur radio. Based own your
answers, you get an average result. Mine: a little hearing loss on both ears.
Slightly concerning because the XYL (or Gawd I used that term — surely lighting
will strike!!) says I do not hear her all the time. Then again, I used an
iPhone. I will try again with a dedicated land line. It is genuinely an
interesting listening experiment.

[Elecraft] K3S + SteppIR Controller+ MacLoggerDX

2015-12-28 Thread David Ahrendts
If you’re running a K3 or K3S with a SteppIR controller and MacLogger DX, I’ve
got a question for you: RS232 frequency data from my P3 is split with a Y-cable
between the SteppIR controller and the Elecraft KUSB cable that runs to my Mac
Mini. However, to allow MacLoggerDX to initialize with the K3S, I must briefly
disconnect the SteppIR controller (MacLoggerDX finds the K3S no available),
allow MacLoggerDX to initialize with the K3S, and then re-connect the SteppIR
controller to the Y-splitter cable.
Anyone have a work around? They do share frequency data very efficiently once
initialized.

[Elecraft] OT Mystery QRM Help (Video)

2016-01-22 Thread David Ahrendts
Stumped. Need your guesses. What is this mystery, rhythmically pulsing, urban
S7 QRM: https://vimeo.com/152779708 <https://vimeo.com/152779708>

Factors: captured 5:30pm Friday (Sunset was 5:15). Densely packed Los Angeles
neighborhood — could be next door or a block away. Occurs regularly at night or
near dusk and not prime 20M day time. Occurs only on 20M. I’ve noticed it from
Fall on to current Winter time. Seems to be a mechanical device (pool pump?).
60-degrees falling to 50-degrees tonight -- a heater system? Eventually just
fizzles away slowly. Elecraft K3S + P3, SteppIR DB-11.

[Elecraft] Fwd: OT Mystery QRM Help (Video)

2016-01-23 Thread David Ahrendts
A bit more: I watched this mystery QRM pretty closely for an hour Friday
evening as 20 meters closed for the day (by 6:30pm PST). The cadence of this
noise changed. It slowed. Then faded away with the band. I’m scratching my
brain to try think of a mechanical device that would create that kind of
rhythm. And as always as I check 20 meters at 11am Saturday, there is no sign
of the QRM.
Will listen again late afternoon today. May experiment moving the DB-11 around
to see if it is directional.

Re: [Elecraft] Filtering RFI from LED & flouresence Dimmer Switches

2016-01-25 Thread David Ahrendts
Thanks to all who have posted on this thread. Very informative. I have an
entire house full of Lutron dimmers — all servicing halogens — circa 2001
design (pre-LED). And being a green guy with solar panels on the roof and
plug-in hybrid, I was considering LEDs for the whole house. Will step very
carefully now because of this discussion. Curious, does anyone have an example
of LED noise recorded?

John, I’ll concur with Larry. I have several D-Link gigabit switches using CAT6

[Elecraft] OT Apple Airport Extreme RFI

2016-02-28 Thread David Ahrendts
Just replaced an older circa 2012 Apple Time Capsule with a new Airport Extreme
in my home gigabit network. And in the category of “it’s always something,” I
discover that the AEX powers down with my K3S/KPA500 at 500 watts. Just shits
off. Admittedly, they sit just feet away from each other, but care is taken to
separate RF lines from audio lines and network lines. The newer AEX introduces
Apple’s 802.11ac protocol. Any guesses?

Re: [Elecraft] OT Apple Airport Extreme RFI

2016-02-28 Thread David Ahrendts
That did it. Many thanks, Steve. I took it a couple of steps further also. Got
out a bunch of snap on ferrites and made a couple of one turn wraps on the AEX
power cable. Further, I had intended on installing the MFJ 1164B AC Line RFI
Filter (a 4-plug rugged RFI filter with a separate external ground), so I
plugged it into a separate AC circuit and that combination made the AEX happy.
500 watts no problem.
Like so many people, I have several Mac computers, two printers, an audio
system, lamps, misc. gear all in proximity to the K3S and KPA500, and even
though I do run a separate AC line for the ham gear, the non-ham gear is
powered with a hodgepodge of power strips and extension cords. Clearly I need
to get those in order also. So, case closed — happy to advise anyone who might
have the same issue on my steps to resolve it. Back to my Oscar party. :—)

Re: [Elecraft] OT 20M Moving QRM (Video)

2016-03-03 Thread David Ahrendts
Thanks, everyone, for weighing in. I’m armed with $95 of ferrite snap ons and
chokes and two MFJ heavy duty AC filters! Saturday I plan to carefully
re-design all of the AC wiring in my office/shack which is, admittedly, a
hodgepodge of extension cords and power strips with at least 5 wall warts. I
suspect the offending switching PS runs the brand new LG display used with the
K3S SVGA. It’s a small, light little thing. Runs very hot. Most likely will be
replacing it with a linear wall wart or something cleaner.

I found this article that explains the differences between linear and switching
power supplies:
http://www.clever4hire.com/special-articles/home/ac-dc-power-supplies---using-wall-warts

Will report back.

[Elecraft] OT Cat 7 Ethernet Cable

2016-03-07 Thread David Ahrendts
A quickie as I work through my RFI house cleaning. Anyone have experience in
using Cat 7 cable vs. Cat 6 in a home network? It’s my understanding Cat 7 is
extensively shielded while Cat 6 is not which ought to help that ethernet
“hash” issue.

[Elecraft] P3_SVGA Refresh Rate

2016-03-20 Thread David Ahrendts
I am LOVING the SVGA display option with the K3S and P3. Instant visual window
on the band. Quick question for which there is an obvious answer that I just
cant see: the refresh rate for me appears to be a little slow (maybe
twice/sec) compared to the P3 display which is real time very fast. Sort of
staccato rather than smooth. SVGA set on 1080x1920 on a very sharp 23-inch LG
display.

Re: [Elecraft] RFI resistant Monitor

2016-04-11 Thread David Ahrendts
Gerald, I’ve been on the RFI noise hunt for several weeks with my system. Added
the SVGA with a very nice LG 23-inch LED monitor (M45 23M45D). Perfect size to
fit above the K3S and P3. I’ve managed to lower my noise floor to typically
well below S1, and do notice the LG producing a tiny high pitched noise from
it’s switching power supply. I would use my 12V PowerWerx, but the LG switching
PS produces something like 27 volts. I’m confident I can reduce the tiny noise
some more.

Re: [Elecraft] RFI resistant Monitor

2016-04-11 Thread David Ahrendts
May I encourage everyone to study the excellent work from Jim Brown, K9YC — he
weighed in here and you’ll see his link below. I’m also taking his suggestion
after careful study to replace the parallel zip line red-black cable with
shielded twisted pair cable (18 AWG ) with the Anderson Power Poles connectors.
The theory being that anything twisted will resist RFI while parallel cable
invites it and generates it. A fist full of ferrites helps also. Getting
surgical, but it really helps.

Re: [Elecraft] New K3S

2015-07-27 Thread David Ahrendts
K3S #10125 was born Saturday, July 25th, 3pm. It’s companion PX3, yesterday.
Still calibrating, but I just wanted to send five stars to everyone at Elecraft
on yet again another wonderful experience in kit building. So much detailed
thought goes into packaging, the assembly manual, and of course, the style and
design. If you’re new to Elecraft and you’re exploring building a kit, just
know you are expertly guided through the build process by thee best people in
this business. I do admit I confused a 4.0mm spacer with a 4.8mm spacer, but
that was in hour 7 of the build. I’ll forgive myself for that! :—) Five stars
people. Bravo, bravo, bravo.

[Elecraft] K3S Power Up Audio Pop

2015-08-13 Thread David Ahrendts
Audio experts: I have a pair of AudioEngine 2 powered speakers servicing my
beautiful new K3S (an excellent combo). On K3S power up and power down, there
is pretty major audio surge pop that, I am sure, is not healthy long-term for
the powered speakers. Can anyone suggest a small speaker connection
modification to prevent or lessen that power up pop?
It occurs to me the simplest thing to do is to power up the K3S and then power
up the speakers.

[Elecraft] Multiple KUSB Connects

2015-08-24 Thread David Ahrendts
In a multiple Elecraft device station, I’m curious if anyone connects all KUSBs
to a USB hub semi-permanently so that when you need a connection you already
have that hardware access? Realizing you cannot run two Utility programs
simultaneously (at least I haven’t had success with that), what is your setup?
I have attempted with a USB hub into a Mac Mini with marginal success. Please
opine.

Re: [Elecraft] Multiple KUSB Connects

2015-08-24 Thread David Ahrendts
Yes, Phil, you’re probably right. Probably over-think here. But there are
KAT500 parameters that can be more easily managed in real time with the KAT500
Utility, so I thought I’d give it a try. Dunno, in the bigger picture, might
this be he precursor to the idea of software control or software monitoring of
Elecraft devices? Maybe. My problem is when I connect five KUSBs they all have
10-or-12-digit names that I have to go through manually to find my device that
I want to control (I know, I know, poor me!!!). AND they are power hogs. Mac OS
X shuts ‘em down: too much power suck combined. So, you need a powered USB hub
to connect a few.

My friends, thank you for your many responses to this question. Clearly I’m not
the only one thinking of multiple semi-permnanent KUSB connections to multiple
Elecraft devices simultaneously. Lesson: all things are not equal when you
select a USB powered hub.

Among the responses that I found most valuable was this one sent directly from

Mac setup — sharing it here with everyone:

2GB memory) to an early 2015 Macbook Pro Retina 13" at 2.7GHz
with 16GB memory (and 250GB of SSD). I had used a powered USB hub
from an "office superstore" that ran at USB 2.0 speeds, and had
Sabrent USB/serial cables (which explicitly use FTDI chips) running
to the K3 command port, the KPC 3+ (which went to another rig for
VHF packet use), the Trimble Thunderbolt GPSDO's NMEA port, plus
the SignaLink USB's cable.

When I upgraded to the Mac, I also shucked the old USB hub in favor
of a Sabrent 4-port USB3 hub. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium under
Parallels 10, and the Mac is running Yosemite with all the latest updates.
(The Acer Netbook ran Windows 7 Starter). I've had this setup running
for a couple of weeks now, and I'm extremely pleased. In fact, just
yesterday I swapped out the SignaLink for an Asus Xonar U5 sound card,
which Jim, K9YC recommended on the list - it works perfectly. Last night, I
was able to take the rMBP, an old Alinco handheld, the KPC3+, the
special cable to run from the Alinco to the KPC3+ and one of the USB
cables with me to an ARES meeting. It all plugged in and played WITHOUT
having to fuss with COM port designations, etc., etc. Came home, spent
5 minutes (maybe) reconnecting everything and all came up smiling.

That said, I don't quite know what to tell you except that one thing
that helped maintain some sanity with my old hardware configuration
was to mark each and every cable and every USB hub port and never, ever
plug them in "wrong". Otherwise, Windows would go off and assign a new
COM port number to a given cable and I'd end up chasing my tail. I'm a
retired UNIX software QC engineer, so my tolerance for that sort of
baloney is minimal. One thing that bit me frequently, and took me months
to finally nail down, was that for whatever reason, Windows would insist
on spontaneously downloading, installing, and running a Ballpoint Pen
device driver for the Thunderbolt, basically taking over for the mouse,
resulting in all kinds of cursor movement and "clicks". I had to figure
out how to outfox it, get into Device Manager and disable that driver.
I later found a brief discussion on the Time-Nuts mailing list about it,
and a few other guys had had the same problem and disabling under DM was
apparently the only viable solution. (The Thunderbolt runs at 4800 baud).

That said, I've been amazed that I was able to pull everything last night,
go to the meeting with just the KPC3+ and then reassemble perfectly. Since
you're going to be dealing with multiple K3s, and will probably want to
run them both/all at 38400, you may go nuts trying to figure out which is
which. Remember that the K3 Utility does display the serial number in the
title bar, and you'll need to assign a different COM port for each rig,
so I think some patient labelling and record keeping could help there. I
rarely run the Utility anyway - only long enough to download and install
firmware - so I don't (personally) see the need to run two copies
simultaneously. However, you will need to figure out how/where to store
the configuration files for each rig separately; I can't remember what the
normal default file locations are offhand. But it should be possible to
bring up the Utility and manually change its COM port so that it's talking
to Rig B instead of Rig A. (Or there may be a configuration file for the
Utility as well, so that it knows what COM port, etc. to use or it may be
possible to invoke a specific COM port on the command line, in which case
you could create two desktop shortcuts, one pointing to one rig's COM port,
the other to the other - Lady Heather, the control program for the GPSDO
does that, as do many other applications). BTW, under Parallels, you can
force it to grab the various ports, including the external "sound card",
away from OS X and assign them quasi-permanently to Windows, so that Windows
will always be able to drive those devices.

Again, I'm NOT a Windows expert, but I do hope that this provides some clues,
and if you have further questions, please feel free to e-mail me, and I'll
try to help.

Very 73,

Bayard R. "Brandy" Coolidge, N1HO

Just took delivery of the KUSB for the KPA500. Discovered I am up to speed on
FW and saved the config. Left the KUSB connected. Did a 30W K3S tune up and
EVERY RED LIGHT on the KPA500 came on. Awesome experience. Sorta like LA’s
notorious 405 most nights! Checked everything. Did a quick 30W tune
transmission again. KAT500 says 1:1.2 or less. W2, the same. RED LIGHT city
again on the KPA500. Removed the cable and we return to sweet green all around.
So: ya don’t operate the KPA500 with the KUSB attached, right?

2015-08-26 Thread David Ahrendts
Interesting, Jack. K3S to KPA500 to KAT500 and a W2 to MA5B typically 1:1.2.
Perfecto!
Connected the just received KUSB-KPA500 cable to the amp and to a USB port on
my Apple Thunderbolt 27.5 display running with the MacMini.
Downloaded KAT500 Utility and checked to see I have current firmware. I did.
Saved the config. Left the cable in place.
Did a low power (amp in stand-by/amp in stand-by) 20M tune just to check if the
KAT500 needed to adjust. Every red light lit up on the amp. Did not dare engage
high power. No red lights on the KAT500 or the W2.
Removed the KUSB cable and all was back to normal.
Has to be RF traveling back through the new cable to the KPA500. Let me
duplicate the situation again taking great care to separate the KUSB cable from
any coax, and I’ll report back.

Re: [Elecraft] Multiple KUSB Connects

2015-08-26 Thread David Ahrendts
Jack, reporting back, as promised:
I could not replicate my red light experience tonight. Carefully keeping the
KUSAB-KPA500 cable well away from any coax, I connected as I did yesterday to
the Apple display and Mac Mini.
Did a TEN WATT xmit (KPA500 in stand-by). All green lights. Same for 20 watts.
Engaged OPER at 25 watts. Produced 500 watts from the KPA500. Smooth as silk.
I clearly laid the KUSB right smack on top of the power out coax. No other
explanation.
So, case closed.

And in the words of the very wise moderator of this list, Eric Swartz, (he’s
thinking of this right now), “let’s close this discussion on Multiple USB
Connects.” Thanks much. Thread closed.

What do you regard as “high power?” Is our beloved KPA500 at 500 watts a high

[Elecraft] Elecraft Mac People: KUSB Issue

2015-09-07 Thread David Ahrendts
What can ya do to keep your fabulous Mac OS X device (in my case a Mac Mini)
from kicking off the KUSB when it goes to sleep? Trying to keep MacLogger
connected to the K3S via it’s KUSB for several days at a time (like Labor Day
weekend). It appears to get kicked off for inactivity as a power drain which
requires (I know, poor me!) re-starting the Mac Mini to re-initialize the USB
port with the KUSB. Not a big thing, but maybe there is a way to refresh the
USB devices connected (a Mac issue). Anyone?

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Mac People: KUSB Issue

2015-09-07 Thread David Ahrendts
Many thanks for the half-dozen direct responses off list. Most of you run a
powered USB hub for the KUSB (or several). May I ask what type/brand powered
hub are you successfully using with your Mac device for the KUSB or multiple
KUSBs?

It appears the chip in the KUSB can be interpreted as a real power hog, and the
Mac Mini, MacBook Pro, iMac will protect against unusual drain. It just shuts
off the USB port after a little warning. A powered hub would certainly remove
that load from the Mac.
I will also admit to being one of the million or so Mac beta testers and we’re
currently on OS X El Capitan beta Version 10.11 (15A278b). And believe me,
there have been/are plentiful Mac sleep-wake issues before they finalize.

Re: [Elecraft] Power Supply for KX3?

2015-09-09 Thread David Ahrendts
Jock, I asked that very question of the Elecraft people a year ago when I built
my KX3. PowerWerx was their recommendation.

<http://www.powerwerx.com/power-supplies/>
I now have two — one powering my K3S (or KX3), and the other powering
everything else, except the KPA500 which has a dedicated house AC line.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S + FLDIGI + Mac Mini

2015-09-20 Thread David Ahrendts
Gentlemen, thanks. Answered my own question moments after posting. And I am in
awe. With ONE USB cable on the K3S, you have rig control, audio in and audio
out. Short answers:
1) In FLDIGI config, Hamlib, find your port and initialize it. That’s rig
control.
2) In FLDIGI config, Audio, select PortAudio, USB Audio Codec for both Capture
and Playback.
3) Select FLDIGI mode PKTUSB which moves the K3S to DATA mode. Otherwise it
likes to default to USB.
4) On the K3S, MIC control becomes Line level and mine likes to be around 6
before tripping too much ALC. The P3 showing a clean PSK31 signal. Sweet.

Now, my Mac Mini is a beta tester for Apple El Capitan, and version 10.11 Beta
(15A278b) is a little buggy with FLDIGI. Many screen freezes which I’m sure
will be ironed out in time.
There was this cautionary issued on 9/11:

<http://www.machamradio.com/blog/2015/9/10-fldigi-and-upgrading-to-os-x-1011-el-capitan>

Thanks, as always. Happy to answer any question off list also.

[Elecraft] K3S + SteppIR DB11 Connections

2015-10-12 Thread David Ahrendts
Quick help on connecting the SteppIR SDA 100 controller to the K3S for brand
tracking, please. Is it the SteppIR Y-cable from the K3S ACC? Or does one use
the Elecraft KPAK3AUX cable set Y-connector?

Re: [Elecraft] K3S + SteppIR DB11 Connections

2015-10-12 Thread David Ahrendts
For the group, here is the archive that Jim, KK1W, posted in August on
connecting the K3S with a SteppIR controller if you’re using the K3S USB port
for computer control:
https://www.mail-archive.com/elecraft%40mailman.qth.net/msg183939.html
<https://www.mail-archive.com/elecraft@mailman.qth.net/msg183939.html>

Many thanks, Jim. Pretty cool to get an aeronautical mobile answer on this list
from 36,000 feet.

[Elecraft] P3 Amplitude vs. K3S S-Meter

2015-10-19 Thread David Ahrendts
Noticeable difference between the K3S S-Meter level and the displayed S-level
on the P3. An S-9 signal on the K3S is seen as much less, maybe an S-3 on the
P3. So its not REF LVL, not SPAN. What?

Re: [Elecraft] Final attempt at SOS !!!!

2015-11-29 Thread David Ahrendts
David, you’ve gotten some great advice here. In the last year I’ve built: KX3,
KPA500, KXPA100, PX3, W2, KAT500, K3S and a P3.
Best advice I can give is to make a place/space where you can separate all of
the parts into understandable cups or trays, or something of your choice, and
then label them. You’ll be dealing with lots of small screws and nuts and
washers. Many look a like, but they’re not. I used my wife’s muffin trays —
couple of them — and then you can quickly separate everything before you begin
assembly to make sure when they call for a specific screw and a specific
washer, you’ll know where they are in an instant.
Know the Elecraft assembly manuals are very good. Really first class. They do
ship a black-and-white manual, but I believe the download PDF is a color manual
which does help in some rare instances. Best of luck with your K3S. Do not
hesitate to reach out on this list or directly. Happy to assist.

[Elecraft] OT Architecture of Radio App

2015-12-03 Thread David Ahrendts
"Architecture of Radio" app in the Apple App Store. Rather interesting
visualization (mostly art) of radio waves present around you. BUT, it appears
to try to accurately geo-locate cell towers and satellite locations based on
your coordinates. Tried it on my iPad Pro and was rather impressed. Here’s the
Endgadet review with the link to the app:

High fives to everyone who helped a dig-newby get up and running. Happy to say

detailed help. Had my first PSK QSO LA to Alberta last evening. Love digital

Re: [Elecraft] sudden change in drivers for Griffin iMic used for PSK & RTTY

2015-01-22 Thread David Ahrendts
Julie, I can’t speak for the Windows side of this(I’m a Mac), but in my recent
experience in coming up to speed with digital for the KX3, I too acquired an
iMic, but ended up using my older SignaLink sound card with a modified home
brew cable (which works wonderfully for FLDigi). The iMic’s were hard to find.
Apple has discontinued selling them. Amazon was in “1 left” status. And Ebay
was sparse.

Mark, I’m just a few months into the wonderful KX3 + PX3 + KAT500 (brag) — love

Re: [Elecraft] Using external sound card for digital modes

2015-01-29 Thread David Ahrendts
My friend, I had the same type of problem in bringing the KX3 up to speed for
digital. The rig would begin wildly scanning when connected to an Mic sound
card. My solution was to use my old Signalink sound card instead with a home
brew cable. Does a very nice job. In trouble shooting the iMic (which I never
got to work), someone mentioned checking the mini-plug type. Remember the KX3
microphone plug is a tip-ring-sleeve plug (TRS). Presumably a mono or stereo
plug would cause unexpected things to happen.
My two cents for you.

Re: [Elecraft] Using external sound card for digital modes

2015-01-29 Thread David Ahrendts
Also, part of the magic of using FLDigi and a SignaLink card is that the
software does all of the work by design. The KX3 remains in SSB mode for PSK or
RTTY, so it becomes a quick cable swap to plug in digital or plug in a
microphone.

Re: [Elecraft] Hot KXPA100 Amplifier

2015-01-31 Thread David Ahrendts
Would second all of this fine advice. I run the KX3 + PX3 + KAT100 into an
Ameritron ALS-600S. And those clamp on chokes are essential. Using them
liberally, and also making sure all the control mini-cables come no where close
to the high-power coax outputs or the output from the KX3. Tidy things up
nicely. Keeps the RF going where it should go.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 power supply "brick"

2015-02-10 Thread David Ahrendts
Lynn, I have used and was very happy with the PAE-Kx33
https://proaudioeng.com/products/pae-kx33-ac-power-supply/
<https://proaudioeng.com/products/pae-kx33-ac-power-supply/>
However, I acquired a few more Elecraft devices (PX3, KAT500, W2, and a relay
for a larger amp), so I consolidated all of the 12VDC devices using a Power
Werx 30 amp (more than enough) power supply
http://www.powerwerx.com/power-supplies/
<http://www.powerwerx.com/power-supplies/>
with Anderson Power Poles and the red/black zip line. Very neat. It was
Elecraft’s recommendation to use a single amp rather than several smaller
bricks. They use Power Werx in the field. Appears the single DC amp is the
quietest and cleanest.

Re: [Elecraft] Ham enthusiast arrested

2015-04-01 Thread David Ahrendts
Super secret documents now reveal that Elecraft intends to skip the K4 and K5
and move straight to the K6. “Twice as big as the K3 with twice the knobs, and
really big screws!” the design team said in a draft announcement scheduled for
release in a drought-stricken central California town on April 18th.
“Huge…really huge,” one observer with inside knowledge said while emphasizing
the K6 will be water-cooled and peddle self-powered with enough reserve to
power several other devices simultaneously including an optional ham-equipped
self-driving autonomous Tesla specially designed with Levitation Mode for those
occasions when you just need a 500 foot legal limit perch to break through that
pile-up with Asiatic Russia. The same source produced patent applications from
Apple to include an entire remote system for the K6 on the soon-to-be-released
Apple Watch. “Imagine,” he said, “working DX from your wrist!”

The soon to be announced K6 (see the April 1st posts) will routinely manage
HDCWH mode (Hyper-Drive Cosmic Worm Hole mode), a perfect match for the W1REJ
OCF High Voltage power line Dipole. Oh, and it’s in the new 10kHZ super ESSB

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 And SignaLink USB

2015-04-24 Thread David Ahrendts
Hey Dale, I’m successfully using FLDigi on a Mac Mini, the SignaLink USB device
and the KX3/PX3. Use the RED TRS (tip, ring, sleeve) mini-plug (or any
similarly wired cable) and plug one end (the straight plug is my preference)
into the SPKR output of the SignaLink device, and the other end (right angle
mini-plug) into EARPHONE plug on the KX3 — this is receive line. For the
transmit line, you may have to home build, but it is easy as pie. In my case, I
have an RJ-76 out of the SignaLink device into an adapter that connects to a
right angle TRS mini-plug which plugs into the KX3 MIC plug — this is the
transmit line.
I prefer using the SignaLink device because it does a wonderful job of
isolating the KX3 from the Mac Mini (I think that’s important), and it
regulates input and output levels really well. I do place a cheap external
speaker on the SignaLink box, AUX output, so I can simply hear the digi-data
back and forth in the background at a really low level.
Happy to provide any guidance off list including photos, etc. The home brew
transmit cable cost six-bucks, a modified MIC cable.

[Elecraft] AFX MD Delay

2015-06-05 Thread David Ahrendts
Wayne and Eric, this is fabulous audio design and I really love it on my KX3
and, I’m sure, on my yet-to-be-shipped/built K3S. It appears to be more than
just a delay/reverb effect. Am I hearing just a delay left-to-right?
Quasi-stereo? Or…?
In any case, it is quite effective. Feels three-dimensional. Not flat. Very
nice. Especially with phones. And I’m building some EQ’d Audio Engine 2 small
speakers that really are effective with AFX MD Delay.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - KPA100 communication problem

2015-06-10 Thread David Ahrendts
A fine issue this is, Bernie. Couple of questions:
1) Tell us about the connection to your computer. What type? How are using the
computer with the KX3/KPA100/PX3?
2) Have you checked the software settings for the KX3 Utility, the KPA100
Utility and the KX3 Utility? All good there?
3) And just for the heck of it, have you tried swapping KUSB cables in the
event one of those may be the culprit?
Just my two cents.

Flawlessly. Perfectly. 30 watts out of the KXPA100 typically drives the KPA500
to 500 watts. Contact me off list if you wish.

Re: [Elecraft] PX3 / KX3 USB Problem

2015-06-25 Thread David Ahrendts
My KX3-PX3 (and KPA100) are connected to an iMac also. On the theory that it’s
the KUSB cable, or the chip in the cable, try swapping the KUSB cable with
another. Just a thought.
Sure sounds like a software switch somewhere.

Re: [Elecraft] Microphone Qusestion

2015-07-05 Thread David Ahrendts
Bob, you’ll get a hundred suggestions on this list, but the Heil PR781 is a
superb choice. Or the Heil Gold Elite. I use the PR781 with the W2IHY EQPlus
and 8-band EQ and the combo of the already top notch mich and EQ are superb.
Additionally, pushing that fidelity into Elecraft’s ESSB (up to 4kHz) produces
an extraordinary result. Best wishes. Happy to demo for you — contact me off
list and we can set up a 20M QSO.

[Elecraft] KX3 and the Heil Gold Elite Michrophone

2014-10-09 Thread David Ahrendts
Friends, you are an incredible group of amateur radio enthusiasts, and I am so
looking forward my KX3 kit and it’s companion KXPA100 arriving next week. I’m
transitioning from the Kenwood TS-480HX (no complaints about it at all) where I
use Bob Heil’s Gold Elite michrophone (little bit of a base boost to really
impress people, and a switch that allows you to narrow up the audio to push
through pile-ups). Heil does not have a KX3 cable or an adapter for the Gold
Elite. Does anyone use a Heil microphone with the KX3?
Many thanks. This list, BTW, convinced me to get on board.

[Elecraft] KX3 + KXPA100 and ACC1

2014-10-23 Thread David Ahrendts
KX3 serial 6-thousand something is born. Very impressed. What a tight little
machine. Maiden QSO last evening using the KXPA100 @ 110 watts. This is a very
efficient combo: under 5 watts easily excites the KXPA100 to it’s max. Here’s
my question: the KXPA100 cable takes up the ACC1 and ACC2 slots. I would really
like to use one of the software spectrum displays (maybe iSDR for the iPad, or
a Mac equivalent). However, they require ACC1 out. Can ACC1 be split somehow
for two devices?

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 + KXPA100 and ACC1

2014-10-23 Thread David Ahrendts
Indeed it is! Thanks for answering a newby.
Now, another question for all of you: is there any complication that typically
develops when running the 100 watt KXPA100 into a higher power liner amplifier.
In my case, an Ameritron ALS-600S. I am aware of the switching cable phono plug
on the KXPA100 that has to connect to the Ameritron external on-off relay.

[Elecraft] KX3 & KXPA100 into Ameritron ALS-600S

2014-10-25 Thread David Ahrendts
I want to run my just-born KX3 and it’s 100-watt companion KCPA100 into a high
power linear, my Ameritron ALS-600S. But we have some issues. For instance: the
combo easily produces 600 watts CW. But, on SSB it far too easily trips the
Ameritron load fault, or the KXPA100 high SWR shut down. This rather acts like
RF feedback. Maybe I just need to follow better RF hygiene here (higher quality
coax cables, making sure RF does not loop back on a power cable, etc.). Any
collective wisdom appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Questions

2014-10-31 Thread David Ahrendts
Larry, I assembled a KX3 and it’s companion KXPA100 amp 3 weeks ago, and it is
an outstanding combo. I’m replacing a Kenwood TS-480HX (an outstanding device
also) which I ran with an Ameritron ALS-600S 600-watt linear. With some
balancing and shielding I will be able to run the KX3 + KXPA100 into the 600
watt linear. So, I have my super compact QRP radio that I can put in my back
pack and sit on a lawn chair with a Buddy Pole on top of a mountain, or the
high power base station on my desk at home with the mini-beam. Cake and eat it
too. The KXP3 pan adapter for the KX3 arrives today — my weekend project.
I’ll suggest the roofing filter especially for CW. Did not get an antenna tuner
for either the KX3 or KXPA100, but might reconsider that later, since I have an
auto-tuner for the big linear. Had no interest in using the KX3 on 2M and
actually for the cost, you could probably find a very nice 2M rig.
Assembly suggestion: they provide you with a lot of little teeny tiny screws.
Get a cupcake pan or ice cube tray and separate all the parts and label them.
Very difficult to tell a 5/32 screw from a 1/4. Tweezers help. And the customer
support is extraordinary.

[Elecraft] KX3 Audio Compressor

2014-11-11 Thread David Ahrendts
Feeling rather chuffed to have my Heil Gold Elite 5.1 mich and my Dr. Dre Beats
ear buds with my KX3. Could run a disco! The Heil has very broad audio response
for amateur radio which I prefer for casual com. I’ve noticed that a ll of that
fidelity goes away when I invoke the audio compressor even at level 1. What’s
actually happening when the compressor is turned on? Is the audio intentionally
shaped differently? Highs and lows clipped off?

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Audio Compressor

2014-11-11 Thread David Ahrendts
Thanks, Gary. I will study up on this. With my really hip (and very effective)
headphones, the difference is quite pronounced. I too have always gotten “great
audio” comments using the Heil with my about-to-be-sold TS-480HX and TS-480SAT,
and I would run pretty full on compression in as full a fidelity as the unit
would produce. It was often described as “punchy” and would always push through
a pile-up. I fully get the idea that in major contesting, fidelity is not the
concern — you wanna be heard. But can’t ya have it both ways without sounding
“thin” and “tin-ee.”

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Audio Compressor

2014-11-11 Thread David Ahrendts
Wayne, I am loving the KX3, KXPA100 combo and have it now balanced and
operating virtually 100% into an Ameritron ALS-600S. And the Dr. Dre’s, I am
cooking! :—) On the audio thread, I also noticed a huge audio difference
between the Heil Gold Elite and the Elecraft MH-3. While the Heil was a
producing a beefy, rich audio presence, the MH-3 was present but quite thin by
comparison. I know these are subjective comparisons and there is no doubt the
audio shaping has been successful for lots of people, I’m just compelled to
raise the bar a little bit on audio shaping. Just my preference for routine
contacts. Love the rig.

[Elecraft] ESSB

2014-11-17 Thread David Ahrendts
Experimented yesterday for a few minutes with ESSB (carefully avoiding weekend
contesters), and it raised a fundamental question: As bandwidth is broadened,
is effective radiated power diluted? In other words, will 500 watts with a
2.6MHz signal be more effective (stronger, punchier, more DBs transmitted) than
500 watts with a 4MHz ESSB signal?

Yes, KHz, of course. Didn’t have the courage to consume 4KHz :—) but I did
answer the Elecraft net call at 1800z at 3KHz.

Well put, Al. Thank you. More watts per Hertz!
