[Elecraft] New K2 Owner

2010-06-08 Thread Eugene Balinski
All,

I just acquired a (new to me) K2/100. It is a phenomenal
little radio.

The manual is not the clearest I have seen, so I do have a
few questions.

1) When I tune in a CW station and narrow the CW filter
with XFIL switch, I need to re-tune the radio to recenter
the signal. Is this an issue with the alignment,
or are there other settings that may be in play ?

2) Memories. How does one toggle between the memories and
the VFOs ? I would like to load the 60M frequencies in the
memories and be able to toggle back to the VFOs for general
operation.

3) VFO Mode track. When changing the VFO from A - B, the
mode does not change. In other words, if I have CW mode on
VFO A, and I swap to VFO B, the modes remains CW until I
manually change it to SSB. If I change the VFO back to VFO
A, the mode will stay SSB and does not return to CW as was
first entered. Is this normal for this rig ?

4) I understand that there is a preferred replacement for
the main tuning knob from Kenwood ? Can someone point me
in the right direction ?

Thanks in advance

 Hi everyone,
As a recent purchaser of a factory built K3/100 with the
lot (except for the second receiver) I'd first of all
like to thank the folk at Elecraft and in particular
Wayne and Eric for making this wonderful radio.
I have used it for a little bit on HF but it's mainly
been on 6 2M here with fantastic results!

I don't know if this is the right forum to ask, but has
there been any consideration given to creating an
internal 70cm band transverter ala K144XV?

I know that the main focus of the radio is for HF
operation (which it does admirably) but having
experienced the internal 2M transverter performance I
cant help but wonder if there has ever been an internal
 70cm option floated.

Whilst some of the good folk on this reflector may
eschew the 'band in a box' idea, for someone like me who
operates predominately portable it does indeed make sense
 to go down that route.
The less external cables and things I have to go wrong
or get lost / misplaced the better. :-)

If you're interested, here are the details:

A new REF-lock module would be designed that plugs into
 the small 8-

 10-MHz

 the TMP

 the DSP/

A microcontroller on the REF-lock module would be clocked

 microcontroller would
continuously measure (and average) the frequency of the
 49.38 MHz
oscillator, obtaining a value to the nearest 1 Hz.
 Hysteresis would be
applied to prevent hunting, so the actual accuracy spec
 would
probably be +/- 2 Hz. This translates to about +/- 1 Hz
 in operating
 frequency on 20 m.

Approximately once per second, the module would report
 the actual
reference frequency to the K3's main MCU via a slow
 digital data line
(labeled 100HZ on the RF and KREF3 schematics). The
 main MCU would
use this to calibrate the REF CAL value normally entered

There would be no noticeable impact on performance.

[Elecraft] K2/100 RF Power Output Control (SSB)

2010-06-20 Thread Eugene Balinski
All,

Still new to the K2/100 (6k serial number). I have a
question about the power output control in SSB mode. I
was hoping to be able to vary the RF output from QRP all
the way to the 100W level, however when I advance the RF
Power knob past the 12W indicated on the display, I hear a
relay click and the radio goes to the 100W+ output level.
This causes the power supply (RS-20) to actually go out
of regulation (more than 22A) on voice peaks.

Is there an issue with the PO control, or does it
behave differently with the 100W amp ?

  73 and thanks in advance,

It would also be simple enough for the manufacturers
to solve the polarity problem by using a bridge rectifier
at the power input, although that has a definite downside
 as well.

It sure does have a downside. The 1.4 volts drop would
seriously hurt the maximum low-distortion power output.
13.8 volts is bad enough for clean SSB at the 100 watt
 level.

For the K3, there are now close to 20 upgrade bulletins
 from Elecraft. It
may make sense to number the bulletins in Collins fashion
 (e.g., SB-1).
It's a lot easier to track and document changes by

 document installed

In the traditional sense, LINE was a broadcast and
recording industry standard for FIXED signal at 0dBm, and
600 ohms. It was used to interconnect various pieces
equipment and was supposed to relieve the engineers of the
need to determine what the signal level was and what the
source and destination impedance levels were.

IMHO all manufacturers should return to the tradidional
definaton.

Re: [Elecraft] SO-239 Concerns -- Another Perspective

2010-07-23 Thread Eugene Balinski
I have also been bitten by the non-captive center pin on
Type N connectors. In my particular case, I had 100 feet
of RG-213 runing outside from the shack to a roof mounted
antenna. Type N connectors on both ends.

Then came the cold weather. One day, no receive signal,
and funky SWR. Hmmm. After a brief investigation, and a
trip to the roof, it was determined that the non-captive
center pin had been pulled out of its N connector and
therefore, the mating N connector, by the apparent
contraction of the coax copper center conductor in the cold
weather. What a pain.

Therefore, whenever I use Type N connectors for
professional or amateur use, I specify captive center pins.
Failing that, I use another type of connector.

All usual disclaimers apply. Your milege may vary. Void
where prohibited, taxed, or otherwise snarled at...

 Joel,

How do you respond to this blurb from a DX Engineering
 guru?

I have been bitten by the non-captive center pin
 migration problem
(almost impossible to find) and won't use N connectors
 again for any
non-UHF high power application. This migration if enough
 creates an
open circuit. It is hard for me to tell the difference
 in captive pin
and non captive pin N connectors. Also I prefer the
 larger center
conductor surface area of the UHF center pin connectors.
  They are
proven to have very little heat generation beyond UHF.

 73 de Brian/K3KO

For example, DX Engineering does not offer the RR-8
 series switches with
N connectors. Using UHF type connectors, this system of
 remote relays
offers superior port-to-port isolation and power handling
 from 1.8
through 54 Mhz at low loss and low SWR. Only due to
 superior engineering
is this series of Remote Switches usable at 144 Mhz with
 slightly
elevated SWR and reasonable loss of only 0.25 dB.
 However, these units
are not intended and cannot be used on UHF, so N
 connectors are
 intentionally not available.

There is no question that the constant impedance
 characteristic of the N
connector make it a superior choice for low loss VHF and
 UHF applications.

However, it is a fact that on HF frequencies, very high
 power at high
duty cycle modes will heat the small diameter center pin
 of the N
connector. Heating can cause the center pin to migrate,
 ruining the
impedance characteristics of the connector and, at
 continuous high
power, potentially cause a short circuit. If this problem
 were to happen
during testing or operations, one might mistake high SWR
 or high loss as
a defective of the switch, rather than a problem with the
 connector.
This cannot happen with PL-259 and SO-239 connectors that
 are properly
installed. At low SWR they can handle several kilowatts
 of HF RF.

This is not to say that you cannot use N connectors on
 HF. Rather, the
question becomes What are the benefits derived versus
 the cost of
changing to N connectors for HF, where constant impedance
 is
 unnecessary?. The answer

This is not a concern if you already have N connectors,
 though. You may
use adapters or short coaxial jumper assemblies with
 differing
connectors at each end, as offered by DX Engineering,
 with custom
lengths available by telephone. These would cause
 negligible losses on
HF, and would allow you to experience the superior
 port-to-port
isolation of a DX Engineering RR-8 series Remote Antenna
 Switch immediately.

Let us know if you need any additional information. We
 look forward to
 hearing from you.

 Thank you and 73,

  2. The other potential problem with UHF connectors, in
 my opinion, is the
integrity of the shield connectivity through the

 connection either at the

This can be an issue in

Note that a type N, C or BNC pair makes it's shield

[Elecraft] KAT-100 Calibration Question

2010-07-25 Thread Eugene Balinski
All,

I am in the midst of calibrating my KAT-100 antenna
tuner. I have it all set up per the manual and have
started the process including setting the tuner to CAL and
running the RF from the K2 backwards in to antenna port 1
on the tuner with the dummy load on the tuner radio port.
Note, the antenna tuner was set up to antenna port 1
before I put it on to CAL.

My question is: What should the K2 be indicating for
SWR in this configuration ? When I press the TUNE button
on the K2, the SWR is showing Hi SWR then 9.9:1. I was
expecting a pass through to the dummy load with a 1:1.
Does the high VSWR on the K2 indicate a problem somewhere,
or should I just continue with the cal ?

Thanks es 73,

All,

The Radio Shack Minimus 7 speakers came highly
recommended. Unfortunately they are not available new

The other 2 speakers that are efficient are the Heath

  I found a pair

Re: [Elecraft] K3 audio speaker jack

2010-10-27 Thread Eugene Balinski
All,

Ok then, so the optimal solution then would be to
build a stereo to mono adapter where one side of the stereo
audio and the ground would get wired to a mono jack (pick
your size)tip and ring for use by the mono speaker, and the
other audio channel from the stereo connector would be
connected to ground via an 8 ohm, 2W resistor. In that
manner, all parts of the audio amplifier are properly
terminated.

get the radio to meet a certain market price point. The

To us, the answer is yes. To others, the improvement

the manner is which they operate. Also, there are plenty
of hams that can just not afford a $3,000.00 + radio no

The phase noise on the original Icom IC-751 (not the A

number of bands when transmitting-.

 John, KI6WX ki...@pacbell.net wrote:
The ARRL is aware of this issue. This problem was
 discussed in my 1988
articles on phase noise in QST (March April issues).
  The article notes
that a high phase noise transmitter degrades the
 performance of a low phase
noise receiver to that of the transmitter. This article
 started the ARRL
 making composite transmit noise measurements.

A strong signal (S9+50dB) from a transmitter with
 broadband -130 dBc
composite noise in a 500 Hz bandwidth reduces the
 receiver's blocking
dynamic range to 103 dB. Most top notch receivers show a
 blocking dynamic
range of around 140 dB. In this case, the dynamic range
 is reduced because
 the noise floor is increased.

I don't think most hams are aware of the problem. If you
 have a nearby ham
running high power and your receiver doesn't work well
 when they are
transmitting, you just assume that the signal is too
 strong for your
 receiver.

This problem is like splatter or key clicks. It doesn't
 impact the owner of
the transmitter, but instead degrades the receiving
 environment of those who
live near them. There is little incentive for the owner
 of the high
composite noise transmitter to improve their equipment.

 -John

The FTDX500 wouldn't be the only one, if a -130 dBc
 composite noise
number defines failure. If you have access to QST
 reviews, compare:

  Flex 5000
  FT-2000
  Orion II
  IC-7700
  K3

all of which plot tx composite noise at 100 or 200 W
 out to 1 Mhz. You
can draw your own conclusions, but the FTDX5000
 apparently isn't
exceptional in that regard. The Flex is no better than
 -120 dBc out
to 1 MHz, the FT-2000 is slightly worse than the
 FTDX-5000, and the
Orion II is no better than -130 dBc out to 100 kHz. The
 Icom rigs seem
to do a little better. The K3 performance indeed far
 surpasses the
others. I could find no comment on these numbers in the
 reviews.

  Bob NW8L

Why is this not sent to the Editor and Technical
 Editor or QST as
well as the lead test engineer at the ARRL lab?  What
 was their
   response?

If the radio's transmitted phase noise is that bad,
 Yaesu should be
forced to recall all units currently in the field.

We are well past working from our basements.:-)

 A few data points:

 1. Since shipping our first K2 from Aptos in January of
 1999, Elecraft
has grown into a healthy multi-million dollar high-tech
 company with a
broad product line. We have -zero- debt, own all of our
 inventory, and
have a healthy, and very stable, balance sheet. We build
 our products
here in California, just outside of Silicon Valley. We
 are structured to
be here for a long time, and certainly longer than most
 hams keep a
particular rig. We want Elecraft to outlast both of us.

 3. How did we do that? Elecraft designs great, high
 value, products that
are fun to use. And our products, like the K3, continue
 to improve and
get new features even -after- you buy them. We run a
 stable and tight
financial ship - carefully trading off an internally
 financed growth
rate versus risk and cash needs. We work hard. We hire
 great people who
continually amaze us with their intelligence, creativity
 and work
ethic. Our customer support team is one of the best. And
 we enjoy our work.

 4. We also carefully listen to, and interact with, our
 customers daily.
We are focused on being the most responsive, and fun, ham
 radio company
 to buy from - period.

 5. Wayne and I are both healthy guys - a very long way
 from retirement.
We are having a great time bulding and running Elecraft,
 and plan to do
so for some time. But we are not the only people who
 continue to make
 Elecraft successful.

 6. Our well staffed engineering design team is diverse
 and strong. I'd
wager that it is as large as, or larger, than many HF rig
 design teams
at our competitors. We are well past two guys doing all
 of the design in
our basement labs. Our engineering, support,
 manufacturing and
management people are top notch, with a lot of depth. We
 have a great
team and plan to keep building it for the long haul.

 7. We haven't been a 'QRP Only Company' for some time.
 Yes, in 1999 we
first targeted at the QRP market since it was tightly
 focused, easily
marketed to, and was our fastest path to a first product.
 Its still a
great market, too. But we always planned to also offer
 100W
high-performance rigs, both kit and factory assembled, to
 compete
against the best HF rigs from other QRO manufacturers.
 That's the major
part of the market. I think you can agree we have more
 than succeeded in
that area with the K2 and now the K3.

The majority of our rigs go out the door at 100W. We are
 continually
designing a diverse product line, ranging from QRP to
 QRO. The KPA500,
now going into field test, is definitely -not- QRP;-)
  But stay tuned
 for more QRP offerings too!

 9. Most important, we have incredibly enthusiastic and
 supportive
customers. You make it fun for us! By telling your
 friends about
Elecraft, the K3, and our other products, you keep us in
 business every
 day.

You are our best salespeople. The more you
 enthusiastically tell your
friends about our products, in person and on the air, the
 more new
products we can design and sell. In today's economic
 environment, more
than ever, this is incredibly important to us. Please -
 keep up the
great work. We really appreciate it!

[Elecraft] [K2] Microphonic 18.157.9 (+/-) ?

2010-12-11 Thread Eugene Balinski
Hi All,

I ran across an interesting thing with my K2. I have a
very pronounced microphonic at 18.157.9. There is a
carrier (birdie?) on that frequency and when I tap on the
top of the radio, the tapping is clearly audible in the
speaker.

Has anyone else noticed this ?

Thanks in advance,

Check the power supply to see that it is staying within
regulation when under load. Try the supply on another

APP connectors can be a real pain if not done absolutely
correctly. I ended up purchasing a ratcheting crimper
from HRO as I could never get just the right force on the
manual one. It was either too weak and the wire would fall
out when tugged, or I would mash it too hard, and the
contact would not fit in to the plastic housing. The
ratcheting crimper is first time, every time, at least for

APP connectors can be a real pain if not done absolutely
correctly. I ended up purchasing a ratcheting crimper
from HRO as I could never get just the right force on the
manual one. It was either too weak and the wire would
 fall
out when tugged, or I would mash it too hard, and the
contact would not fit in to the plastic housing. The
ratcheting crimper is first time, every time, at least
 for
 now

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Why MH2 mic seems dead

2013-06-28 Thread Eugene Balinski
Electret Condenser mic elements are typically very
sensitive to their mounting location. A small movement the
element can make a huge difference in the sound. You may
get better performance if you move the element to the front
of the foam directly to the rear of the mic screen...

SSBA to 2 or 3 is
does pick up audio but I think that's because it is so
 sensitive it is also
picking it up from the top.

When I opened the mic, I saw the mic element in foam, in
 a compartment below
the top screen and practically isolated from the screen
 if front of the mic.
In fact, that front screen looked like it was just a
 plastic facade.

Is that how mics are suppose to be made? My only guess
 is, by putting the
capture area on top, it avoids speaking directly into the
 mic if you are
expecting it to pick up via the front screen.

I have that 600 ohm dynamic Kenwood mic that is often
 used with the SGC-2020
(up/down buttons on top). I thought about replacing the
 MH2 with it - mainly
because its slimmer profile would allow it to fit in the
 Pelican case with
 the K2.

Can someone tell me it that Kenwood would be a direct
 replacement or would I
have to rewire something. It doesn't have a model number
 on it but I think
it is MC-43s. What about audio quality - the K2 is only
 the QRP-ish model.

[Elecraft] [K2 ] RF Out/DC power Issues

2011-03-15 Thread Eugene Balinski
All,

My K2/100 (s/n 6k) has an issue with RF output control
vs DC input power. When operating in the range of 1 - 10
watts (lo power), I draw what seems to be a reasonable
amount of DC power, and the tune control works as it
should, reducing the output power to approx 2W while the
KPA-100 does its thing.

Once I set the radio to 11 watts or above (hi-power),
all bets are off. I am drawing approximately 15 A for 11
watts out pulling over 24A at 30W, and the tune function
no longer reduces the output power while tuning. If set to
20W out, the tune function indicates no reduction in and
will tune at 20W. The same for any other power range.

My question is, besides D-16 and D-17, where else should
I be looking for issues? Note, I do get an occasional Hi
Current warning while operation in the 1 - 10 watt range.

Thanks in advance for ay help,

Re: [Elecraft] marine frequencies and k3

2011-03-23 Thread Eugene Balinski
George,

The ** best ** solution would be for her to get her ham
license. In that manner, she would be able to work the
14300 Maritime Mobile Service Net as well as a number of
other maritime nets throughout the world. It will also
give her access to other hams throughout the world. This
could save her life. There are a number of weekend
license courses that could help her along the way.

I am sure that he HF radio and antenna coupler on her
boat will cover the complete 3 - 22 MHz band and may go to
30 MHz. It may have to be keyboard/reset enabled. That
would give her easy operation.

Also, please DO NOT suggest that she use a ham rig for
her primary marine HF radio. Most ham rigs are not set up
for the rigors of marine operation and with the salt air
and moisture, corrode very easliy. Marine HF radio have
the commericial frequencies with correct T/R split already
in NV memories. This is especially important for distress
frequencies. These are normally a 1 button push.

No it is not legal for you to communicate with her via
HF on the marine band with out getting a commercial station
license for you, and having a commercially certified radio
at your station.

 license.

Beyond this, it seems there is a potential marketing
 opportunity for
Elecraft in the marine community. Ocean sailors use SSB
 and many of
them also end up getting a HAM license so they can also
 use HAM
frequencies on voyages. The Elecraft K2 and K3 are in
 some ways ideal
for marine use because they are small and have relatively
 low power
 consumption.

The stresses on a marine radio are huge and most of them
 have been made
water and shock resistant. Also, marine radios require
 extreme
simplicity of operation because they occasionally have to
 be used by an
 inexperienced operator during an emergency.

Maybe none of this makes practical sense.

Someone educate me, that is what this forum is about.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Hardened K2 for HFPack?

2011-04-02 Thread Eugene Balinski
Actually, I was hoping that something like that would be
the next Elecraft product.  Maybe a K2-field, or a K2-A;
a ruggedized, updated, version with lessons learned from
the K3. Perhaps in a SG-2020 like package, with 20W and a
antenna tuner mounted on the top with both a front and rear
RF connector to allow use of the radio with a whip antenna
in a pack. Use the external KPA-100 with KAT-100 for
non-portable operation. Battery could mount inside the
radio or on the bottom.

Just a thought.. : - )

I've always thought that Elecraft should come out with
 a VHF/UHF all
mode rig based on the K3.

Yes, I know about the outboard transverters but I'm
 talking about some
thing like the old Yaesu FT-736 or Icom IC-910 based on
 the K3.

I've never liked the FT-847 or TS-2000 approach of
 stuffing a radio with
DC to daylight. If something goes wrong with the rig
 you lose both HF
  and VHF/UHF.

Elecraft has all the parts sitting in stock. Use the
 guts of the
transverters and integrate them into a K3 sized box
 with the same DSP
and control boards. Getting 100W out on 2m/70cm will
 need a new PA
  design (50V???).

I guarantee it's more complicated than that and it's
 not something that
I'd want Elecraft to waste time doing if it means
 putting something K3
on the back burner. It all depends on if there's a
 market niche that
needs filling. I think there is but could be wrong.

Re: [Elecraft] K-3 Noise Reduction

2011-05-16 Thread Eugene Balinski
All,

For basic noise reduction operation, the ADSP-2 unit in
the venerable SGC SG-2020 is about the best DSP I have
heard. IMHO it sets the bar for all DSP NR units.

The NR has 2 levels. The first level is excellent for
electrical noise and QRN removal along with a great
auto-notch function to remove tones, all without fatiguing
digital artifacts.

The second level is a deeper version of the first and
can be used during strong signal high QRN/noise situations.

The NR chip and algorithm are now quite old in
electronics terms, but the technology is still valid and
offers a great launching point upon which to improve.

There has been a flurry of questions about the KX3. I do
not remember seeing this one. Does anyone know if the KX3
will mount to the 100w PA/ATU to create a single unit for
fixed operation ?

USPS is my preferred shipper. As I have mentioned before,
they are local, they are generally helpful, are probably

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 vs. K3 and other rigs?

2011-06-06 Thread Eugene Balinski
All,

The improvement in communications effectiveness of 20
watts verses 10 watts is valid - much more than the 3 dB
increase in power would seem to suggest. I have seen the
same results as with my SG-2020 as was mentioned below.
Part of the effectiveness of that particular radio is the
VOGAD speech processor as well. A similar algorithm for
the KX3 speech process might be something to consider
later.

A small 30W PA with antenna tuner that would mount to
the back of the KX3 would be simply amazing. Include a
larger rechargeable battery pack and it probably couldn't
get much better - IMHO

The point you make about the added complexity is valid.

However from a communications effectiveness point of
  20 watts is a
much more realistic power level, especially for SSB
 QSO's. Most of
the Mil Manpacks use this output power level.

I operate portable using mil HF manpacks with the power
 varying
  between 20 and 30 watts. I also have a SGC2020. 95% of
 the time on
the first call I can get through and have the standard
 cookie
cutter qso's and move on. If you try and do the same
 with 10 watts
its very frustrating and much more of a struggle. These
 are NA Q's
not local stuff. 5 to 10 watts is good power level for
 CW. For SSB
20 watts is far more effective, even with simple whips.
 Everyone
will say its only 3db, however that 3db makes a huge
 difference when
using simple antennas especially on SSB.

While the AMP might be the answer, looking at the
 projected images
and size, it will be a huge hassle carrying another box
 around. If
you consider the size of Yaesu FT857, which runs a full
 100 watts of
output and its design is very neatly integrated into a
 tiny
package, the KX3 with an external amplifier will be
 awkward by
  comparison.

A FT857 with some AA batteries was carried to the top
 of Mount
Kilimanjaro by HB9BXE. The operator successfully had
 many qso at 20
watts of output. He probably would not have packed a
 KX3 and
amplifier if it was available then.

I dont see why a duplicate of the KX3's PA could mot
 be offered as
a piggy back box with another set of 8 batteries. I
 would rather
follow that option than the 100 watt linear option. It
 certainly
would be a lot smaller and portable than the 100 watt
 PA. I am sure
many homebrewers will explore this option.

Anyway time will tell. There is always the
 hombrew/modification
option. The KX3 has a lot of potential and the design
  is 98% there.

Here are a couple of additional
  factors to consider.

  1. Increasing the output power to 20 or 30 watts would
 have
  an impact on
either the weight of the KX3 (more batteries needed to
  maintain a
desired battery life) or the battery life (the
 existing
  batteries would
not last as long at the higher power level).

  2. It is much easier to add an external power
 amplifier, if
  desired,
than to significantly improve receiver performance at
 a
  later date.

While its nice having great receiver specifications,
you do have to be realistic about the real world
requirements that is placed on the receiver when
 operating
  portable.

For me battery life, convenience and power output are
very important requirements rather than world beating
  receiver specifications.
I would gladly have 30 watts output over
ultimate receiver performance. Most military manpacks
 run 20
to 30 watts for good reasons.

10 watts and a wire in the tree type of operation
 does
not demand a receiver with 100db of IMD dynamic
  range.

If the KX3 does deliver incredible receiver
performance for a bargain price I wont say NO, however
 I can
live with lesser receiver performance when operating
 with
  marginal antennas.

What I would prefer to see is an antenna tuner that
will tune a 9 to 13 ft whip on all bands, or
 alternatively a
end fed wire on all bands. A low noise figure receiver
is important when using short portable antennas.

We all waiting for the KX3 tech specs with

In response to a few questions on this topic:

 The KX3 has a 4-circuit 3.5-mm jack, allowing for UP/DN
 and PTT
controls as well a mic audio shield ground. The MH3 has a
 matching plug.

However, the mic jack can also be used with mics having a
 3-circuit
(stereo) plug. These will not provide PTT or UP/DN
 controls, but can
still be used with VOX or the XMIT switch (equivalent to
 PTT). Two
menu entries are provided for mic configuration: one to
 turn bias on/
off and another to turn the UP/DN buttons on/off.

Heil headsets with two stereo plugs (one for stereo
 receive audio, the
other for the mic) can be used. Generic computer headsets
 with these
 two plugs will also work.

There are very small, pivoting mics available from places
 like Fry's
that have a 3-circuit plug. These are compatible with the
 KX3's mic
jack, too, and in fact allow you to use the KX3 like an
 HT (in a pinch).

We'll expand our list of compatible mics over time.

In your case, if you can hear the noise on a portable AM

 which one kills the
noise. Good luck in playing noise detective!

the CM-500 cannot be plugged directly into the KX3 jack.

 Tip and ring
 together for the AF connection.

It MAY work, but it is not a certainty, the KX3 function
 of the ring
contact is three-fold - PTT, UP and DWN.
the audio level on the ring may or may not induce one of
 those functions
depending on the voltage and current.

It would be better to create a homebrew adapter that
 would accept the
CM-500 AF on the tip and ring, and connect that only to
 the tip of the
KX3 jack, and at the same time add a small box with a
 pushbutton for PTT
and also pushbuttons (with the appropriate resistors) for
 UP and DWN).

In other words, the stock CM-500 *may* work, but it may
 not depending on
the levels presented at the ring connection.

This situation may also be present in microphone designed

computer use - they may be OK, but if they create funny
 PTT or UP or DWN
conditions, blame it on the connection between tip and
 ring on the
 microphone jack.

The answer is quite simple ... the tip and ring of the

The supplied battery box has no connection to the ring

Re: [Elecraft] Power Cord Questions

2012-03-09 Thread Eugene Balinski
Lee,

What size wire are you using ? Should not be smaller than
#12.

The length should be as short as comfortably possible.
That means as short as possible with enough extra length
to dress the cable around the operation bench if/as needed,
and to be able to pull the radio out of its operation
position easily with out pulling the power cord out of the
radio either on purpose or by accident. No need for any
more length.

Also, Be sure that the connections at the power supply
terminals are solid. I used to work summers at a power
supply house. They made very high current regulated power
supplies for the military. There were instances where the
customer would connect the test load to the PS with clip
leads, and when the voltage at the load was out of spec,
send it back.

There was nothing wrong with the supply. The clip leads
had too much resistance, and at the rated load, would drop
too much voltage because of the bad connection at the PS
terminals. Be sure your connections to the PS are clean
and tight.

Fuses should be mounted close to the supply, just like they
are in your house. In the event of a short, you want to
break the circuit before a fire starts.

Present (currant?) thought says to fuse both leads. Use
low loss auto blade type fuses. Other fuse holders can
have a lot of resistance, and under load, drop the voltage.
I have seen the cheap clip type de-solder a fuse cap !
You can get the auto blade holders with red and black
leads at your local auto parts store to build your own, or
buy them from Quicksilver Radio
http://qsradio.com/index.htm or Powewerx all made up.

 1. Do you need fuses to be in both the positive and

 positive lead?
Currently, I have both leads fused.

 2. What length should the power cord beconsidering
 that there will be some
power consumption (voltage drop) in the line which is
 longer than shorter? My
current length is over 6 feet.

 3. Should the fuse(s) be mounted at the radio or at the
 power supply?
Currently, mine are right at the power supply.

The reason why I am rebuilding the power cord is that I
 am getting somewhat of a
voltage drop on key down. According to the K3, the
voltage is at 13.8 but goes
to 11 volts at key down at 100 wattsaround 21 to 22
 amps. So, I suspect
something might a tad glitchy in the power cord. Maybe I
 just need to reinstall
 the Anderson Power Poles.

 new product it
takes time to work out the manufacturing and test issues,
 but our
 throughput should increase rapidly.

Those who receive the first batch of KX3s should be aware
 of a few
 things:

 - Some firmware features are still being added or
 improved, and we
could be releasing new beta code as often as every few
 days. You can
load new code whenever you find it convenient.

 - There are some last-minute hardware items that will be
 shipped after
the radio itself. This includes the battery charger
 (probably a few
weeks away). Any such items will be very easy to install.

 - The printed owner's manual will initially be at
 revision A3. The
electronic version of the manual will be updated much
 more often,
including the errata sheet. Of course the electronic
 version is also
 searchable.

 - Because of last-minute changes, the first edition of
 the kit
assembly manual is probably out another week. We have to
 test the
assembly and configuration procedures to make sure
 everything is
 working.

No doubt we've overlooked a few things in firmware or
 documentation.
We'll answer any questions as quickly as possible. But
 we're very much
looking forward to getting your KX3s shipped!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 or KX3 on my sailing yacht?

2013-01-21 Thread Eugene Balinski
All,

IMHO, no amateur series transceiver should ever be used
as a safety-of-life marine transceiver. Only marine style
radios should be used for same.

The main reason is the highly corrosive environment in
which the radio lives. Most amateur radio sets are not
sealed in the same way that a true marine radio is.
Continued exposure to salt air/moisture can rapidly
corrode a radio leaving it useless when it is most needed.

Other items in favor of a pure marine transceiver are
the built-it ITU channelization, and single button distress
system - Digital Selective Calling (DSC). DSC has the
ability to be connected to the ship's GPS and to
auto-broadcast the ships name and position with the push of
a single button. Depending upon the system, the DSC may be
able to broadcast the type of emergency as well.

Lastly, many of the marine HF radios can be opened to
allow operation on the ham bands allowing check in on the
Maritime Mobile Net and others.

Once again IMHO. YMMV

Park your radio on 50.125 don't JUST listen, CALL CQ
occasionally! Make some noise. If everyone listens and
no one calls, no one will know that the band is open. By
calling, you may even run in to a few locals as well.

Also, remember the AM crowd. They are frequently on

Finally, spin your receiver through the beacon band from

band is open...

Re: [Elecraft] K3 power supply recommendations

2013-04-17 Thread Eugene Balinski
Another vote for the RM-35. I have had mine for over 30
years. Not an issue.

Note however that Astron over specs their power supplies.
They claim that the RS-35 will do 25A continuous. It will
not. It gets too darn hot. Given the heatsink, it should
do about 20 continuous. This is with static air cooling,
no forced air.

That being said, the RS-35 powered all 12 volt equipment in
my shack including the 120W HF radio, TNC, 50W 2m radio for
packet and dx cluster, and any othe vhf or other radios
that I wanted on. I have seen the ammeter move past 33A
when the SSB voice peaks combine with the transmit cycle of
the packet radio, with no issues.

 I have an accurate voltmeter.

Should I set the voltage with the voltmeter measuring at

 the internal

Re: [Elecraft] Power Supply?

2011-07-03 Thread Eugene Balinski
All,

Please be advised that Astron supplies are generally
over rated. The RS-20 is rated at 20A peak and 16A
continuous. It is more like 12 -14 continuous. I have
seen people try to use them at their continuous ratings,
only to have them fail. The heat sinking is just not
there. Be careful when using any of the supplies at their
top ratings. If you need to use one at rated, then put a
good fan on the heat sink.

  - 2 A min. peak output current
  - 13 to 14 VDC output voltage

Can you say in advance whether the Remoterig twinning
 (no computer
required at client or host site) concept will be
 supported by the K3?

 Yes.

The next release of K3 firmware will allow you to connect
 two K3s
together, with one acting as a terminal only, the other
 as the
remote radio. You can do this either with the RemoteRig
 control
boxes, which do not use a computer, or just with a null
 modem cable
going from one K3's RS232 jack to the other's. (A null
 modem cable
can be made with as few as three wires.)

The terminal K3 does not put out RF or audio -- that is
 handled
cleanly over the network by the RemoteRig hardware. The
 terminal K3
just sends switch/knob/potentiometer events to the remote
 K3. This
means it can be a completely stripped-down K3, like a
 K3/10 with no
options. If remoting K3s turns out to be very popular, we
 may in the
future offer a K3 that's front-panel-only to be used just
 as a
controller. The KX3 could also, in theory, be used to
 control most K3
functions, although it has far fewer controls, so it
 wouldn't be a
 complete emulation.

Virtually the entire K3 user interface is supported by
 the new remote-
control protocol. It really feels like you're using the
 remote K3
itself, including a 100% accurate emulation of the remote
 K3's LCD
(flashing icons, etc.). Over a long-distance network
 there might be
noticeable latency in the use of some controls. But with
 a direct
connection or a LAN, there's barely any lag.

You can manually go in/out of terminal mode, or let the
 RemoteRig box
 do it for you.

Additional details will be provided when the RemoteRig
 boxes become
 available. They're doing extensive testing.

[Elecraft] [k2] Computer Control Issues

2011-10-01 Thread Eugene Balinski
All,

Trying to get my K2/100/KAT-100 operation with N1MM.
Bought the Elecraft USB-Serial adapter. Installed the
driver from the FTDI web site. Seems to be operational.

Connected the cable to the computer (device found, etc).
Connected the other end to the radio/antenna tuner cable,
powered up the radio, and get the INFO 080 error.

Also, and the antenna tuner will not power up.The
serial cable is a Y configuration running from the radio
to the tuner and then to the db-9 where the serial- usb
converter is located. Turning off the radio and removing
the cable returns the radio to normal ops.

I disconnected the antenna tuner portion of the cable
and still get the same error. Reconnect everything with
out the serial-usb converter in the line and all works
normally.

This is not a stock serial cable. It is supposedly
one made especially for this application i.e K2 special
cable.

I guess I will start by ohming out the cable. I need to
find the correct schematic which is in one of the manuals I
assume.

Any other ideas would be appreciated.
