Looking for South Africa ICASA telecom license holder

2008-09-30 Thread Daniel Roman
All,

I am seeking a resident company in South Africa that will act as an agent to
hold our terminal equipment licenses from ICASA. Does anyone know of any that
they might recommend? An Internet search (10 pages deep) did not return
anything but I’d rather use someone that someone else has experience with
anyway!

Thank you in advance.

Re: Shielding setup for conducted emission prescans

2008-09-30 Thread pat.lawler

Hi David,

I had that problem once (broadcast stations were located a few miles away). I
was able to eliminate it by simply connecting a strip of copper tape from the
spectrum analyzer chassis to the groundplane used for conducted EMI
measurements.

Hi,

As a sanity check of your shielded enclosure and LISN, conduct your CE test

You will learn'how' in great detail. 'Why' is far less certain: many
tests have grown up as 'lore' over the years. The IEC 62368 project is
an attempt to replace lore with logic, but it's proving a very rough
road indeed.

You can only 'design in' safety unless you want to lose lots of money by
imposing it on 'finished' designs. This means that your design engineers
need to know the safety standard(s) in depth. As the resident safety
expert, you **DAY-TO-DAY** train the designers, do the tests and make
sure that the designers did a good job. Outsourcing that function is a
recipe for disaster.

RE: Safety Testing Training

2008-09-30 Thread Brian O'Connell
I suffered similar trauma almost 10 years past when I went from a
happy and simple-minded code monkey to a confused and amazed
safety/compliance guy (and the 'confused' condition is a
permanent change).

Attend the annual PSES symposium, then stay for one of the UL
courses.

Read all back issues of the IEEE PSES newsletter.

Do not limit your studies to 1010; also, this standard has a few
problems. Look at some CDFs for your company's existing
products - note the ratings and the specific standards required
for components - become familiar with these.

Be familiar with electric codes and how they will affect regional
use of your product.

Develop a good working relationship with senior agency engineers.

Talk to the safety/compliance engineers of your component
suppliers - if you buy component power supplies, specifically
strive to develop a good relationship with your power supply
safety engineers.

If your employer has other safety engineers, ask many questions
about both the 'how' and 'why' of Type Tests.

Expect positions, that perform only safety engineering, to
eventually be outsourced.

luck,
Brian

RE: Shielding setup for conducted emission prescans

2008-09-30 Thread Gert Gremmen
Most important is the filtered AC connection.
Create a good ground point of a wiiide connection
and connect it to your required reference plane = ground of
receiver.
Other wires connected to the EUT are in general too short to generate
substantial
signal on 50 ohm. While we do carry out these tests in our
shielded room, I never found ANY difference between
door open and door closed. I remember in the past that conducted measurements
ware only causing me headaches with measurements on location, where
no filtered ac was available.

Don't forget to include a low-pass filter for the AC powerline where it enters
your shielded work area.

Another alternative might be to find a used TEM or GTEM cell. It will give you
shielding, plus you can also do radiated emission and immunity pre-scans too.

These 'rabbit hutches' have been used for years. Use mesh with holes
less that about 1 cm diameter and solder all joints between panels. You
need ingenuity to construct a door that maintains the screening. Think
'sliding door'.

If you use 2 layers of mesh, one on the outside of the frame and one on
the inside, the screening can be quite effective.

Another possibility is a disused cold room, for rather larger EUTs.

Shielding setup for conducted emission prescans

2008-09-30 Thread Gelfand, David
Hi all,

I do conducted emission prescans, but do not have a shielded room. A few AM
radio stations come in loud and clear. I was considering building a wooden
frame and covering it with mesh to shield the setup. Our products are mostly
smaller than a breadbox. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks,

David
