Peter,

Now the jumpers are as follows:
5i25 W1-Down, W2-Up, W3-Up, W4-Up, and W5-Up
7i76 W1-Left, W2-Left, W3-Left, W4-Left, W5-Left and W6-Left
and the separate 5V supply is disconnected.

However, now the 5V LED is off.

Swap out the HD? No. Yo can install quite a few copies of Linux+EMC on
one drive then chose which to boot from the boot menu. THIS is the safest
way to upgrade a running system: Make multiple partitions.

Then it is easy to copy from the old system, you boot the new one and mount
the old system read-only and copy from it.

Yes, and 2.5.5 is also plenty old. The biggie is to not
allow the OS to be updated, as that will lose the RT kernel
in most cases. If you are going to update, go to the latest
stable release. There are a LOT of important improvements.

But, if you are running on really old, slow hardware, then
2.7 and the associated newer kernels and Xwindows may not
run well at all on that.

My paranoid gene tells me to ask.

Your paranoia is GOOD! I would not update the system. If
you want to check out the newer version,
at the VERY LEAST, just swap out the hard drive, and install
a completely new system from the ISO.
If the computer is pretty old, it might be time to update
the hardware as well.
You can copy over your config file set and machining
programs from backups, or using whatever removable media you
have available. Most likely, you will have to make some
small adjustments to your configs files to make them work on
the latest LinuxCNC version. The release notes usually
describe what needs to be done accurately.

This is the safest way to do things.

[Emc-users] Gcode extents

2018-08-23 Thread Ken Strauss
After loading a gcode file the extents (max/min x,y,z) are displayed at least
in Pathpilot. Is there any way to access these values from within the gcode?

There are some small config changes needed from 2.5.4 to 2.7.14 and
some major config changes needed from 2.7 to 2.8

But it is likely that the update manager is suggesting updating from
2.5.4 to 2.5.5 and that should certainly be safe.

2.5.4 is really quite old.

[Emc-users] update version on working machine

2018-08-23 Thread Ed

I have a lathe that is running 2.5.4 and runs well.

I get offers from Update Manager to do an update. Can this be any danger
to operation or to any of the ini or hal files or operation?

My paranoid gene tells me to ask.

Ed.
