Re: [Emc-users] Latency Warning Messages

I bought 3 different low profile video cards to try and get rid of that latency
message. The ultimate and best solution was to buy the MESA 7i92H. Does away
with the parallel port completely.

[Emc-users] Latency Warning Messages

2019-12-15 Thread Thomas D. Dean
My CNC computer was purchased several years ago from Sherline with CNC
installed.

I have two disk drives. One has linuxcnc-2.7.14-wheezy.iso and the
other has linuxcnc-stretch-uspace-amd64.iso.

On both OS's, I see 'unexpected latency warning messages', infrequent on
'wheezy' and 99% of the time at linuxcnc startup on 'stretch'. The
latency test shows jitter around 40us for 'wheezy' and 100us for 'stretch'.

The cpu is Intel Atom CPU D2500 @ 1.86GHz
It has 1G memory.
Lots of free disk space.

lspci shows:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Atom Processor
D2xxx/N2xxx Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0b)

and lspci -v shows:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Atom Processor
D2xxx/N2xxx Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0b) (prog-if 00 [VGA
controller])
Subsystem: Intel Corporation Atom Processor D2xxx/N2xxx
Integrated Graphics Controller

Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 29
Memory at 4010 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=1M]
I/O ports at 20d0 [size=8]
[virtual] Expansion ROM at 000c [disabled] [size=128K]
Capabilities: [d0] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [b0] Vendor Specific Information: Len=07
Capabilities: [90] MSI: Enable+ Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit-
Kernel driver in use: gma500
Kernel modules: gma500_gfx

Looks like the on-board video adapter shares main memory with the CPU.
Linuxcnc system requirements says this is a no=no.

Question: Will installing a PCI video card likely to reduce the latency
and eliminate the warnings?

Re: [Emc-users] linuxcnc versions

2019-12-15 Thread John Dammeyer
When you start up LinxuCNC you can click on an ICON that takes you to the
folder that has the .ini and .hal files. I have 2 icons on the desktop, one
for the parallel port version and one for the MESA 7i92H.

For the last little while the MESA card has been sitting on the side and the PC
parallel port cable goes to my BoB. I can then dual boot into either LinuxCNC
or WIN-XP/MACH3.

I'm holding off on a permanent solution until I get the spindle mounted. I can
do simple PWM to 10V analog with the single parallel port and the 7i92H can do
that as can MACH3.

But while I can easily change those two pins, PWM and DIR, to be STEP and DIR
under MACH3 there is no configuration file for the MESA that swaps a step
generator into the pins allocated for PWM. Hence the reason the MESA is
sitting on the side.

The port P1 pins for the step generator on the MESA aren't available on my
PMDX-126 BoB because the PMDX allocates those for their custom and proprietary
expansion boards. So if I want STEP/DIR with the MESA I have to build or add a
second BoB that can interface to the spindle motor step/dir inputs. With MACH3
I can use either a Smooth Stepper or the parallel port and in both cases set
the one pin to be PWM or STEP. The Direction pin can remain unchanged.

Anyway your .hal and .ini files will define your environment. You get to
choose which hardware pins, within the limitation of the hardware, do what. So
there's no reason you can't have your lathe and your mill wired up to the same
MESA I/O interface. You just can't run them at the same time. And given how
long some milling projects take I'm not sure I'd want to have my lathe disabled
because milling project will take 2 hours.

I'll bet in no time at all you'd duplicate the hardware you have and have the
two machines run independently. What you can do is add a switch that shares,
keyboard, mouse and display between two PCs.

Re: [Emc-users] 6i24 + 7i44 configuration

2019-12-15 Thread John Dammeyer
I understand. I'm running my DC servo's open loop with step/dir. So far any
issues that show up are caught by the drives following error fault so I don't
see any reason to close the loop inside Linux. And in any case then I wouldn't
be able to swap back and forth between MACH3 and LinuxCNC.

Hello John,

I don't know If I understand you correctly, but I already have the boards

only for the turret and also all the limit switches and some other switches

them for the convenience of the RJ45 jacks.

I planned to use the 7i33 to drive the servos and also the spindle but
since the servos behave excellent with step + dir (they work with 17 bit
encoders) and also I can simplify the mechanical setup I decided to use
them with step and direction instead of closed loop. So the 7i33 will be
used only to drive the analog spindle input on the VFD.

The thing is, I'm lacking the breakout board for the step+dir so I was
thinking about using the 7i47 which seems to do the job, but I wanted to
ask here because may be there's another one that suits better for the job.

Depending on how many axis you need, you could use

7I47 4 encoders (Diff only) + 6 step/dir
7I47S 4 encoders (Diff only) + 4 step/dir + isolated analog spindle interface
7I52S 6 encoders (Diff or TTL) +6 step/dir

(the 7I47S would eliminate the need to use the 7I33)

I don't know if it is ok to post a screenshot here, but this is what I
get to see in Debian (see attached).

Also, in linuxcnc, can I use two different parallel ports and hook a
mill up to one and a lathe to the orher and use

either one in linuxcnc (or does that mean I need to configurations,  one
for each specific parallel port?)

thanks,

The Wheezy ISO was updated to reference the archive repository on the
24th

of May. It sounds like your download was comfortably after that.

So that seems to indicate that the repository fix did not work. Which is
odd, as (and others) tested it.

I downloaded  and installed ten days ago.  The install went without
hitch.

Re: [Emc-users] linuxcnc versions

2019-12-15 Thread R C
I just down;oaded it again and did a diff on the one I had and the one I
just downloaded, they are the same

(the size if the same too).

-rw-rw-r--  1 rocr rocr 1212776448 Dec 15 18:29 linuxcnc-2.7.14-wheezy.iso

-rw-rw-r--  1 rocr rocr 1212776448 May 23  2019 linuxcnc-2.7.14-wheezy.iso

(looks like I had it for a good while).

A while back I also downloaded these:

-rw-rw-r--   1 rocr rocr 1339883520 Oct 27  2018
linuxcnc-stretch-uspace-amd64.iso
-rw-rw-r--   1 rocr rocr 1339883520 Oct 27  2018
linuxcnc-stretch-uspace-amd64-r13.iso

I'll try to install it again tomorrow.

I read earlier to use the txt install instead of the gui, because  one
can omit connecting to that repo, but when I do that, the installer asks
for an additional disk that I don't have. (It wants a disk instead of
connecting to that repo).

If I get a chance to install it tomorrow,  I'll msg here what happens.

thanks,

Ron

I downloaded it from here:

The Wheezy ISO was updated to reference the archive repository on the
24th

of May. It sounds like your download was comfortably after that.

So that seems to indicate that the repository fix did not work. Which is
odd, as (and others) tested it.

I downloaded  and installed ten days ago.  The install went without
hitch.

[Emc-users] Semi OT: Question about field power on Mesa 7i71 daughter card

2019-12-15 Thread Leonardo Marsaglia
Hello to the list,

I'm about to connect a 7i71 I bought a year ago to the 7i44 (wich is
plugged to a 6i24).

I've read in the 7i71 docs that one must not use a direct switch to drive
the field power on the 7i71 to avoid voltage to scalate too quickly.

My question is: is there any recommended voltage regulator for this task?
May be an FPGA dedicated regulator? I plan to use 24 VDC to turn on some
relays and I'm thinking about building the power source myself.

Also I would like to know if this setup should be used too for the 7i70 and
others... because I didn't find that recommendation in the docs.

Thanks as always for your help.

Re: [Emc-users] linuxcnc versions

2019-12-15 Thread R C
when I installed the 2.7.14 version,  it wants to connect to a repo that
doesn't exist.

It can't find some repo and aborts the install (doesn't even start thye
actual install)

The debian 9.5 one does install (although it doesn't install correctly
if there is more then 1 hard drive)

Do you have a link of a working distro?

It should be the one here:

http://www.linuxcnc.org/downloads/

Are you saying that that does not work?

Try the Stretch ISO first. Wheezy is problematically ancient.

Re: [Emc-users] (no subject) Position logger, sampler?

2019-12-15 Thread theman whosoldtheworld
@John Dammeyer actually not work with nml file but is connected
via modbus to linuxcnc in these days I work again for remove modbus
connection and use nml file instead.
I need only dro, start, stop, abort, pause, play and other some classic
cms and msg for run a robot I plan to add some custom nml command
(like kinSing ... an other similar stuff) ... no other yes for sure
after these you can communicate via CanOpen, c++/qt interfaces and
linuxcnc, directly whitout ethercat bu is not my ideas.
