2022-10-21 Thread Chris Albertson
I run Fusion 360 on Linux inside a virtual machine. I use VMware and then
Windows 10 and then Fusion 360. This works well if you have a computer
with enough RAM and CPU cores, and a good enough graphics card. I keep the
VM image on an M.2 FLASH memory that is very fast
Inside VMware, you can specify how much RAM and how many CPU cores to
assign to the virtual Windows computer. Fusion needs maybe 4 cores and 24
GB RAM to function acceptably. Linux continues to run on what is left over.

I have also run Fusion 360 in a 2011 vintage iMac with a 4-core i5 CPU and
32 GB RAM.Fusion 360 has comparable performance on both computers.

The largest project I did on Fusion 360 with the above is a CNC conversion
of a Harbor Freight mini mill. I modeled the entire mill and also all the
add-on parts.

I use F360 too, though rather hate myself for it.

But I have been using Autocad in various guises since the 1990s and at
this point I don't need yet another hobby.

Having come from Inventor, I use the free version of Fusion 360, and
find the interface suits me (most of the time). I agree that any CAD
package requires lots of learning time.

I go from 3D to GCode in one of two ways (and sometimes mix them):
1. Scripting from scratch, or more usually, stringing together some
parameterized routines I have on disk.
2. Using Vectric VCarve Pro, although this is mostly for 2.5D. I used to
use Cut2D, and agree it is good value. But I upgraded. That was some
years ago, when there was no Post Processor for LinuxCNC, so I created
my own.

The problem with Fusion 3690 CAD_to_CAM is the additional cost: 1000GBP
per year. Way too much to justify for what I do. I would pay the 300GBP
for Fusion, but I'm simply not willing to pay for the add-ons. Pity.
In practice, a package like VCarve Pro costs around 300GBP per year if
you take the upgrades, which I do.
I had a friend who bought Vectric Aspire, and used it for his router.
Nice package, but very expensive.

I concur with the Vectric recommendation. I use their VCarve and it also
handles thread milling, chamfers a little 3D and rotary work. I've rewritten
their post and now get proper peck drilling, T/C tapping and other goodies.

FreeCAD barely does CAD either ... best avoided. If you have used SolidWorks,
trying FreeCAD is like slamming your gingers repeatedly in the desk drawer.
Last time I tried it, if you removed a feature from the stack, the remaining
features re-numbered themselves, but didn't renumber the way features were
attached, so a hole that was in the top of something would now be in the side
etc. Complete unuseable madness and the developers argued it was "right"!

For CAM I use Cut2D+ from Vectric. Very good, very cheap. I am still looking
for an affordable true 3D cam package, but for "2 and a half D"
Cut2d is fantastic. Pocketing, profiles, drilling, tool libraries, even so
level of automatic feature recognition and machining strategies through their
"templates" system. Perfect for my small mill and my 8x4 router.

I use Fusion 360 paid subscription that I got several years ago at an
introductory rate that they said would never go up. So far so good. The
only other that I have used is pro engineer / Creo. I think Fusion 360 is
good for the cost and easier to use. I like that the post processor can be
customized - which I have made a few tweeks to the ready made LinuxCNC post
for my machine and the way i like to use it. The post processor writes the
file directly to my LinuxCNC machine. If I need to go back and change
something like material to leave to fine tune my part it's quick and easy
to do.

Re: [Emc-users] CAM software

2022-10-21 Thread Robin Szemeti via Emc-users
FreeCAD barely does CAD either ... best avoided. If you have used
SolidWorks, trying FreeCAD is like slamming your gingers repeatedly in the
desk drawer. Last time I tried it, if you removed a feature from the stack,
the remaining features re-numbered themselves, but didn't renumber the way
features were attached, so a hole that was in the top of something would
now be in the side etc. Complete unuseable madness and the developers
argued it was "right"!

For CAM I use Cut2D+ from Vectric. Very good, very cheap. I am still
looking for an affordable true 3D cam package, but for "2 and a half D"
Cut2d is fantastic. Pocketing, profiles, drilling, tool libraries, even so
level of automatic feature recognition and machining strategies through
their "templates" system. Perfect for my small mill and my 8x4 router.

2022-10-21 Thread Feral Engineer
Freecad's interface isn't even similar to freecad's interface. There's no
rhyme or reason as to why you need to pick an edge before you can create a
feature and create a feature without picking an edge first. I've spent the
time to learn some of the nuances of freecad, but it's still not as
intuitive as solidworks or f360.

Solidworks, FreeCAD, Fusion360 all are pretty much the same in terms of the
user interface. If doing serious work, just buy the paid version of
Fusion360 and sign up for real classes, Actually do the exercises. It is
normal for it to take weeks or months of daily use before you get good at
it.

Fusion is pretty much seamless from design sketches to working g-code.

It is like a piano. It would be silly if I said "I've watched 3 youtube

kind of the same with state of the art CAD/CAM systems. Give it 100

[Emc-users] CAM software

2022-10-21 Thread John Dammeyer
That FreeCAD subject has once again prompted me to ask how people are using
their CAD/CAM to generate G-Code.

For the first time in about 10 years (or maybe more now) I've refused to update
my support for MecSoft Visual CAD/CAM because their response to my question was
_probably_never_.

The question was: "When are you once again going to be able to import the
.AD_PRT files from AlibreCAD?"

Way back AlibreCAM was VisualCAM from MecSoft and was integrated into Alibre.
They had some sort of falling out because Alibre is also no longer interested
in supporting VisualCAM stating that it's MecSoft that makes the decision as to
whether to integrate. I feel like it was a painful devorce…

I'm stuck with using the 2020 version of AlibreCAM (with the occasional error
message) on the current version of AlibreCAD. I will tell Alibre this year
that I no longer feel the need to pay support after way more than 16 years of
support payments (I have drawings from 2006).

From what I can see FreeCAD doesn't do CAM. I have no interest in using
Fusion360. Both Fusion360, FreeCAD and the VisualCAD user interface confuse
me. Just can't seem to learn them while I find AlibreCAD easy. But then I
could never really effectively use AutoCAD either which is why Alibre was so
great when it showed up.

What is out there for CAM G-Code generation? Preferably integrated with with
the CAD package so one can go back and forth to tweak a drawing for better CAM
without having to start all over again with the CAD.

Thanks
John
