Jon,
Thanks for looking into this but I have it working now. By the
way, The Axiom card is a Digital I/O card supported by HAL. I was kind
of surprised that everyone assumed that it was a video card. The card is
the Axiom AX5214H as described in the Linux CNC Docs. The problem was
caused by an ATI Video driver that was not removed when I pulled the old
video card out a while back.(Long before the DIO card was installed)
Don't know why it caused a problem after the DIO card was installed but
removing the old video driver corrected the problem.

Thanks again,
   Dave

Sorry if I caused such an uproar just asking a simple question! GEEEZ
Guys! Just kidding.Yes I should have given more info as I knew
better being a service tech for CNC machines myself. Sorry, it wont
happen again! Turns out that long before I installed the Axiom card I
removed a Visiontek ATI X1300 graphics card and forgot to remove all of
the drivers and ATI Catalyst software. I installed the Axiom DIO card
yesterday. The Axis GUI worked up until that point then everything went
haywire and the only GUI that would work was tkemc. I removed the ATI
drivers and Axis started working again as well as the Axiom card. The
computer is a rack mount single board with an ISA/PCI backplane. The CPU
is a pentium 4 2.4 Ghz with 2 Gig of ram. Currently using the embedded
graphics port.

Sorry for the trouble and please don't spankenz me with that hair brush
again! ;-)

Re: [Emc-users] Fanuc Serial encoders

2010-03-22 Thread Dave Keeton
Jon,
These encoders are made to have a battery backup attached to them
so they can retain position when shut off for long periods of time. When the
machine is powered up it sends a request on one of the lines for the encoder
to send it's position info back to the control so it can start updating
position. It works a lot like the Heidenhan Serial scales.

[Emc-users] mux

2010-03-04 Thread Dave Keeton
All,
Quick question - If I am using more than one mux (2 for example) ,
would I do it like this?

#Basic example of use
loadrt mux2 count=2
addf mux2.0 servo-thread

#The first mux
setp mux2.0.in0 25
setp mux2.0.in1 100

#The second mux
setp mux2.1.in0 25
setp mux2.1.in1 100

I am assuming the "count=2" is how many mux's I am using?

Re: [Emc-users] Probing with a gimbled head.

2008-11-30 Thread Dave Keeton
Thanks Stuart,
I have been asked to build a machine that can digitize
complex parts (Landing gear). The catch is that it needs to be a "Lights
Out Operation" - fully automated. The only way I can see to do this is
with a gimbled head and probe on a custom built machine. Thanks for
looking into it. I think EMC should be able to do this.

Re: [Emc-users] Serial IO Interface

2008-10-23 Thread Dave Keeton
Question, do you mean that version 7.124 can be compiled into emc now or
do you just want us to play with it aside from emc?

Re: [Emc-users] ModIO, Serial IO Interface

2008-10-23 Thread Dave Keeton
Sorry Kirk, I wasn't referring to recent postI should have specified
that. A while back the discussion started out with digital I/O but if I
remember correctly it went to issues of timing and servos. I believe it
was dropped because it was thought to be unsafe. The only point I was
trying to make was that the option to use it or not should remain with
the end user and integrator, and that careful planning is required by
the integrating person(s) to ensure the safe operation of the machine
for the sake of the operator and machine. I think that safety is being
being addressed by all involved in this project and great lengths are
being taken to provide that safety. My goal is not to offend, only to
help in any way possible to help progress with EMC. Again, offense is
not my goal and you have my apology! I do agree with your view on
spindle operation timing. I just wouldn't trust it with servos. Just my
view.

Thanks for your comment,
 Dave

2008-10-23 Thread Dave Keeton
Thanks Chris, I know you and I have talked about modbus and classic
ladder before. I did find a version on source forge that is version
0.8.2. How would I go about getting version 7.124 to work with the
current version? Are there a list of instructions some where? How do I
get from CVS?

Re: [Emc-users] ModIO, Serial IO Interface

2008-10-23 Thread Dave Keeton
I think that using Modbus to operate a vfd for spindle control is ok,
but again the discussion is going back to issues of timing critical
functions such as motor and drive control. Simple digital I/O functions
would be a much better use for modbus. In my view functions such as home
and overtravel switches, E-Stop and power on and off circuits as well as
feed hold should be handled by the servo board I/O pins. This brings the
hardware watchdog into play on motion critical I/O. The modbus would be
useful for things like hand wheel pulses (MPG), external tool and pallet
changers and other operator push button functions that are not timing
critical. Work lights and coolant on off are not timing critical to the
motion control. Machine operators are not consistant in the speed at
which they press a button. The software and hardware that reads and
writes these functions does not need to be accurate within 20ms. The
integrator has to use his head in selecting what I/O point in the entire
system is used for what purpose.

I agree. Every time I have mentioned it the discussion ends up with
"It's a bad idea to run servos from modbus". I couldn't agree more but
it could be very usful for simple digital I/O very safely.

Re: [Emc-users] Parrallel Port Breakout Board

2008-10-19 Thread Dave Keeton
Just for info, I made a breakout board using 10k ohm resistors and
terminals. I used it to hook up an MPG encoder to the parallel port with
selector switches for axis selection and increment. I built it for
testing but plan to implement it for a control refit.

Re: [Emc-users] Using the MPG to change overrides

2008-05-25 Thread Dave Keeton
I looked over all of the info all of you recommended and based on what
you have shown me I think I can make this work! Thank you very much.
Looking at the WIKI it says to use lspci -v to find the address of my
parallel port. I have a Dell Diminsion 8200 I am working with with an on
board port and it is not showing it. is this an issue? I assume it is
because the port is not on the PCI bus. I think that it is 0378 in the
bios so I guess this is what I use in my HAL file.

Thanks again...

[Emc-users] Using the MPG to change overrides

2008-05-25 Thread Dave Keeton
Looking at the integrators manual in the halui section I found the
following under Feed and Spindle override.

(S 32) halui.feed-override.counts - counts from an encoder for example
to change FO

(S 32) halui.spindle-override.counts - counts from an encoder for
example to change SO

The plan is to use the MPG to change the overrides. I have seen this
done on other PC based controls. Is there an example somewhere on how
these are used?

Dave

2008-05-16 Thread Dave Keeton
Here is a questionWhen looking at the pci address list, I have two
National Intruments devices showing1 is the DIO96 card, The other is
named bridge. The "bridge" shows 3 different I/O registers. Do I write the
driver to talk to the bridge? I noticed a file called plx9030.h in the
source. The bridge device is a plx9030. how would I use this or do I even
need to?

Since I'm still working on that driver for my DIO96, Is it very difficult to
compile the new driver into emc? I am fairly new at C programming so this is
a learning experience for me.

[Emc-users] Comedi drivers?

Can comedi drivers be used for EMC? If not, would it be hard to convert one to
a HAL driver?

So, am I correct in assuming that the card does not have to be there for hal
to load the driver for the pins? Everything is in hal show as it should be
except I don't have the card in..I take it we are probably going to have
to write a driver here? I am not a C programmer but I'll try anything

Re: [Emc-users] 8255 driver

2008-05-03 Thread Dave Keeton
I tried a switch and resistor as shown in the NI manual. I set all of the 48
pins to input before I did this in the hal file. Using hal show/watch I
couldn't see any change in the pin status for all of the 48 pins. Could this
be an address issue? the pci address for the DIO 96 is showing as ff0. My
board doesn't have a jumper W1. The manual for it covers 3 different boards.
It is my understanding that if the hardware is not there then the pins won't
show at all in hal. Could this driver be somewhat different? If addressing
is this issue how do determine what to put in the loadrt command?

   Thank you for your help,
   Dave

Re: [Emc-users] 8255 driver

2008-05-03 Thread Dave Keeton
So here is what I have done.(Recommended by another user)

The pci_8255 showed up in both components and functions
but nothing in pins under Hal Configuration. So I commented it out and did
this...
 In the m5i20_io.hal file -
loadrt hal_ax5214h cfg="0x220_iiooiioo"(Copied
from demo_mazak)
Now I show 56 I/O points in Hal Configuration and Hal Meter under
pins.Does this mean it worked I assume? Do I have to modify the driver
to get the remainder of the I/O points in pins? Do I need to go ahead and
hook up a switch or led to confirm?

   Thanks,
 Dave

2008-05-01 Thread Dave Keeton
Well, I looked through the list of drivers and found the ones you are
discussing. I will try them when the board arrives. After researching it a
bit and looking at the board specs, It is an 8255 pci board. Is the hal
driver for the 8255 limited on the I/O? I would like to access all 96 bits
of my board if I can...

   Thanks,

Thanks John

I looked at the Axiom card and I thought it was ISA only.
The only PC I have that has an ISA slot is old AMD K6II 475... It is a
little unstable but I might play with it some. So you can use any combo of
I/O boards with out conflict?

Re: [Emc-users] Classicladder

2008-04-26 Thread Dave Keeton
Thats OK Chris...I'm just trying to find a way to expand the I/O
capabilities of EMC. It seems that the servo hardware that has been chosen
is pretty much limited to 32 ins and 16 outs. Hardly enough for big iron
with pallet and tool changers, quills (W) and indexing and rotary tables all
on one machine. Maybe I am looking in the wrong place! I will continue to
look into the MODBUS and keep you posted. My config file is pretty much
identical to yours. When I hooked it up to Mach3 it took about ten minuetes
to configure everything and it worked great! I just hate tying up I/O for
things like worklights, chip conveyors and wash down systems when I/O is in
such short supply. I have one machine at the shop that has 127 inputs and 72
outputs! What other options are there? None I could find unless you want to
add 4 Motenc-Lite cards to your system. Hardly cost effective.

Just to clarify, Has MODBUS been enabled in classicladder in the latest
EMC release? If so, how exactly do you enable it? I understand how to
enable it in TCP in but I haven't quite figured out the serial in the
stand alone version. Can some one point me to a reference for how to
set up the config file, I thought it was supposed to be 9502 for the
serial but this locks up classic ladder. Has anyone done this in either
the stand alone version of classicladder or with EMC. I am using the
latest versions of both. A documented example would help. I know the

Re: [Emc-users] Powerdex Tool Changers

2008-03-08 Thread Dave Keeton
Kirk,
You are correct, This actually done with with a cam. The turret
reaches position and then reverses direction for 50ms. This allows a
solonoid fired locking pin to disengage. The pin is used to locate the
turret on position while the curvic coupling is engaged to lock it in
position. The squence goes like this..
   1. Unclamp the turret and engage the motor starter for
say clockwise rotation
   2. When the turret is in between the called tool and the
position before it, engaged the locking pin and let it ride on the cam ring.
   3. When the turret reaches the called tool, the locking
pin drops into the cam ring slot to stop the turret.
A proximity switch is used to confirm this has
happened. Clockwise starter disengages.
   4. Counter clockwise motor starter is engaged for 50ms
to allow the locking pin to retract and the indexing pin to engage in its
hole. Proxy switches are used to confirm both has happened.
   5. The motor counter clockwise starter disengages, the
motor brake is applied, then the turret clamps into to the coupling and the
index pin is retracted.
   6. The tool position is reported to the CNC software and
the proper tool offset is called up.
   7. Cycle complete.

As the turret rotates a 200ms timer is used between each tool position to
drop out the motor if a collision occurs during rotation. The timer is reset
while passing each tool position during rotation. Most electric turrets have
a thermal cut out on the motor to protect it from being damaged if a
collision occurs. There are 6 bits on the encoder...
TPS 1,2,3,4,Parity and Strobe the first 4 are positional Bits,
Parity is used to confirm The first 4 bits are correct and strobe is fired
once per tool position.

  Dave

Our Mazak Lathe has a turret that uses a belville spring washers in a
friction brake. The nice thing about it is that when a collision occurs the
turret is pretty easy to get back on centerline. It uses a shot pin to
locate that is pulled back out when it is clamped. It is hydraulic
though. It has live tooling also.we never use the live tooling except
tapping every so often.. If you use pins to locate and hold the tool
drum in place it is more difficult to align after collision.I am not to
sure about the disc brake idea.Seems like tool pressure might make it

On the two direction motion thing, Both Barrafaldi and Duplomatic will work in
both directionsI programmed mine to take the shortest route to the called
up tool..There is more to this than just rotating a tool into place. You
should be able to call up the tool like this.

Say it is on tool #3 and you want to go to tool #8 with offset #4..Your
command would be T0804.The turret should unclamp and rotate the shortest
route to tool #8, clamp the turret and load the offset #4 to the cnc
softwareWith an electric turret this is a pretty easy thing to do providing
the control (Ladder) has the compare function and the cnc side of the software
can read ladder data tables to get its tool offset from...

what about sliding a pin into the turret when its in place to lock it? then
no lifting is needed, just rotate about it's axis and lock. maybe pins coming
in from the sides in multiple locations to help rigidity? a mechanism similar
to the self centering thing on tap wrenches, the outward spiral type guide...
then you rotate that ring to engage the pins... taper the entrance to the pin
holes on the turret to allow it to pull into place if it's indexing isnt the
greatest. I would try to rough out a quick drawing to try to help depict my
thoughts but i guess i dont have any cad installed on this computer, so i hope
you're able to visualize what im trying to describe. it actually looks kinda
purdy inside my head, assuming the mechanism would actually work.

on a side note... when you huys see HAL, do you think of it as 3 letters,
like LED or SUV, or d oyou think of it as a single word, like the name...
kinda like shallow Hal? noticed you referred to it as "an HAL module" and i

I have my Hardinge HNC turret working through an HAL module. Part of
what makes EMC and HAL so cool is that it allows someone with my skills
to make it work.

I am looking for general design examples, in order to try to come up
with a design for lathe tool changers for Sherline and bench-top class
machines. The issues that are bothering me now are how to stop the
turret in eight positions, with high accuracy and rigidity. The Hardinge
accomplishes this by having just one broad and short zero clearance
interface between the movable turret table and the carriage. Plus a
pneumatic piston which clamps evenly across the table. I won't be using
pneumatics, so I can't utilize the Hardinge design for clamping. And the
other examples I have seen don't have the two direction motion (rise
rotate, park) of the Hardinge, suggesting a different internal design
altogether.

Checking the Barufaldi and Duplomatic links:
http://www.baruffaldi.it/eng/interne/prodotti/macchine_utensili/index.html
http://www.duplomatic.com/duplomatic/auto/uk/2/frame2.html
reminded me that I need to worry about live tooling too. ;)

Re: [Emc-users] Powerdex Tool Changers

2008-03-07 Thread Dave Keeton
Kirk,

I believe this turret will only lock in one of the 8 tool positions
due to the internal mechanism. It probably has a Curvic Coupling to locate
it. The electric turrets in my experience and my situation (I have about 8
of these in my shop) are much more reliable than the hydraulic and pnumatic
models.

Re: [Emc-users] Powerdex Tool Changers

2008-03-07 Thread Dave Keeton
If it is like a Barrafaldi or a Duplomatic I can help..I have installed
both of these...It looks alot like them and I would assume they use the
same kind of encoder. Reading the encoder is fairly easy using ladder, If
you happen to have FAPT Ladder III editing software I can send you what I
wrote for this. I installed a Duplomatic turret on a Fanuc 21i TB controlled
lathe about 6 months ago. Alot of these turrets are built and operate pretty
much the same. I can get you the time and operation sequence if you need it.
Timing on these turrets is critical. Control (including propagation delay)
should be very accurate to +- 10ms or it will mis-index. What questions do
you have?

I have a Dell Inspiron 2600 Pentium III with 384 Megs of ram. It is setup as a
dual boot - Linux/EMC2.1 BDI and Windows XP Home. It runs my stepper drivers
just fine out of the printer port. I bought it new about 5 years ago or so.

Thanks for the responses on EMC laptops. But surely there must be at least
one specific laptop that does work? Is there any success story out there at ALL

2008-02-24 Thread Dave Keeton
Another point. If these are Tape scales, The biggest issue you will have
is cleanliness. We have for CMM machines, 2 are servo driven and 2 are
manual. If you have tape scales try claning them with denatured alcohol and
a lint free cloth. This will fix most scale issues on this type. The read
heads on these scales must be tuned with a scope in X-Y mode. All of our
CMM's have tape scales.

Re: [Emc-users] Cordax CMM

2008-02-24 Thread Dave Keeton
Are these inductosyn scales or A quad B type? Inductosyn scales usually have
a board that converts the signal to A quad B. The signal is like a
resolver, Sine/Cosine. A quad B scales (Like a glass scale) have a A/Not A -
B/Not B signal. The black box (or EXE box) controls the signal amplitude and
monitors the bulb on the reader for the glass scale. The EXE box does a
little more than that but thats the nuts and bolts of it. Most controls want
to see the A quad B type pulses. This is how they can track direction,
position and speed. Glass scales give a feed back like a hand held OEM mpg
unit.

I have installed the same board with no problems, Running on the following.

Pentium4, 2ghz Dell Diminsion 8200 with 768megs of ram. First I installed the
card with default jumper settings and then loaded EMC 2.2.2. All I/Os work
fine. It should be set for board ID "0".EMC will not run at all with the
board removed using the Motenc config files. You should get error

  Hi,

You might try checking the board ID jumpers; it looks like both need to be in
place for board 0.
I don't have a -Lite board but do have the 8 channel board.
Try starting emc with the board not installed and see if you get a message
something like "board not found" or "board not installed". Usually almost the
last thing in the error window.

Then check the jumpers, install the board and go again.

The "Lite" board was used in the Mazak conversion at Fest and worked quite
well. Check the wiki for more information on the conversion.

  Good luck.

Re: [Emc-users] Additional I/O Modbus card.

2008-01-14 Thread Dave Keeton

Hi Chris,

I used the default port 9502, which is the serial port.
Please see the classic ladder readme file I have attached. The hardware is a
Comfile technologies Cubloc CB290. The CB290 has built in modbus
capabilities. It has been a while since I have done this but classic ladder
uses %B and %W bits and words tied directly to modbus registers. I do
remember following the classic ladder documentation and getting it working
with little effort. I don't remember specifying the port on the command line
but I remember setting it in the config screen for classic ladder once it
was running. I don't believe that the config screen in the EMC port is
working right. When I close it all of the classic ladder windows close when
EMC2.2 is running. I think the classic ladder docs say you can do it on
the command line though. I would be happy to test this on my hardware if you
would like. I greatly appreciate your efforts in this. On the cubloc all I
did was enable the modbus and enable the outputs to turn on (Outputs are not
allowed on the CB290 till you do this). Baud rate I believe was 115200 with
8N1 parity and stop bits. I saw no latency issues with classic ladder.
Through-put seem to be instant. The cubloc follows standard modbus protocol.

   Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave. Could you tell me how u configured Classicladder to use the
MODBUS interface? Did you need to specify the port on the comandline? The
first leg of adaption is going well (meaning classicladder V7.123 starts
and works with HAL pins) but I dont have any MODBUS equipment right now,
so I need to know what u used to make it work. Did you use a serial port?
As soon as i feel the program is functioning properly I will see about
putting it in CVS though I need to talk to the other developers about
whether making a new branch for this version is the way to go.

Thank youusing modbus through classic ladder is all I want to
do..I have the hardware and all I need is a way to patch it through
classic ladder. My plan is to use the Motenc Lite I/O points for timing
critical functions such as home switches, E-Stop and Overtravel Switches
and
the like and use modbus I/O points through classic ladder for operator
push
buttons for mode and jog functions. Weather EMC actually looks at the
modbus
points is not an issue as I can use classic ladder outputs to feed
signals
to EMC. I plan to use only digital I/O through modbus so if anyone can
get

classic ladder to read modbus I/O the rest would be easy...This would
give us almost infinite (relatively speaking) I/O. The device I have
worked

well in Mach3 so it should'nt be an issue. It also works with the stand
alone version of Classic Ladder. It is a Cubloc CB290 from Comfile
Technology. Look it up, It is pretty slick.

Fantastic...The new version of classic ladder has the modbus option in the
config. But the version with EMC 2.1.7 does not have this. This could open
up alot of I/O for me for a solid operators station. Can the classic ladder

  Hello,

I am new to both Linux and EMC. I am a maintenance supervisor in an
aircraft manufacturing facility. We do landing gear. I have a Motenc-Lite servo
board. I am pretty sure I won't have alot of problems with the motion control
section of this but was wondering about how to use a manual pulse generator and
jog push buttons. How would I tie hard pushbuttons to the soft buttons on
tkemc? Also, classic ladder does not start when I bring up the EMC2 Sample
config. How do I do this?

 Thanks,
 Dave

Re: [Emc-users] Brushless Amps

2007-10-23 Thread Dave Keeton
I checkedThis is a dual winding integrated 6000 rpm 100hp VAC motor on
our Okuma MCV bridge mill. (Big Big Iron!)The Hall effect sensor is mounted
on top of the motor with the encoder rotor mounted directly to the motor
shaft. I have replaced this encoder before. The motor shaft bearing failed
and let the encoder rotor smack the sensor. The Z pulse is used for
orientation of the spindle for automatic tool changer functions on this
machine. The signal from this encoder on the A and B signals are sinusoidal.
The drive manual says they are used as a speed reference. Okuma says it is a
Hall Effect Sensor. I confirmed with their service department. Maybe it is
not a true Hall Effect? At least that is what they tell meThe sensor is
adjusted by monitoring the signals before they are processed in the
amplifier to adjust amplitude. The closer the sensor is to the rotor the
higher the amplitude. Is this different in a brushless dc motor? Again, this
is probably the extreme limit of my experience with them. Most our motors
(even brushless dc) use high resolution optical encoders. Most of our
systems are AC or permanent magnet DC. Out of 50 machines this the only one
we have now that has a "Hall Effect" (or so they say).

I think that Hall Effect sensors are sinusoidal output. At least
with my experience with them. The ones that I have worked with have an a,
not a, b, not b and z, not z. They are converted to TTL square wave in the
drive itself. They work more like an Inductosyn linear scale. Signal
amplitude is critical, to much and the drive will start clipping and giving
you false feed back or throwing alarms. I think plain old encoders are a
better bet for a bridgeport. Hall effect sensors are to sensitive and to
expensive to replace if you need to. Use a tach for speed and an encoder for
position.

Re: [Emc-users] Starting a new project

2007-10-22 Thread Dave Keeton
The answer would be no to the slow axis issue. All axis on this machine will
run a linear 250ipm. The problem is in the brains of the thing. It only has
5 lines of "Look Ahead". The way the arcs are being programmed is the issue.
Because the arc radius is not consistant throughout the profile of the cut
there are various arcs attached to one another through the cuuting path.
Each change in radius has to be recalculated by the control. At least this
is how Fanuc explained it to me. Because we already have the max look ahead
for this control our only option is to retro fit the control to something
else. This is the only machine in the shop that this issue is this severe.

Thanks, I will check that out.I do have a spare encoder channel on the

Re: [Emc-users] Starting a new project

2007-10-21 Thread Dave Keeton
Thanks Ray,

I will hopefully be working on that over the next few days.
Still building the panel (Gotta make it look good as well as work good.) So
far I am making progress and thats good. The goal is to get this up and
running so we can decide wether to put it on production machines or not. How
does this control handle 3d interpolated arcs? Anyone know? The reason I am
asking is we have a machine that has a Fanuc10M control on it. It goes from
80ipm down to about 20ipm while cutting these arcs. Almost all profile
cutting on landing gear is done this way. It's killing our job
ratesgoing to bed now.Dave is tired!

   Thanks Again!

Re: [Emc-users] Starting a new project

2007-10-21 Thread Dave Keeton
A quick question (one of many to come!),
would I change the line:

# Just uncomment the following line if you want a Software PLC
#loadusr -w classicladder --nogui ../configs/common/bridgeport.clp

To:

# Just uncomment the following line if you want a Software PLC
#loadusr -w classicladder --nogui ../configs/common/myladder.clp

To load the file myladder.clp into classic ladder when emc starts?

Re: [Emc-users] Starting a new project

2007-10-21 Thread Dave Keeton
Hi Ray,

Glad to be here. Thank you for the fast reply.

I can get classic ladder to come up in demo_step_cl and
demo_sim_cl. I guess my question is more about the configuration files for
Motenc card. When I look at the moten_io file it reads:

# Just uncomment the following line if you want a Software PLC
#loadusr -w classicladder --nogui ../configs/common/bridgeport.clp

So I edit it to read:

# Just uncomment the following line if you want a Software PLC
loadusr -w classicladder --nogui ../configs/common/bridgeport.clp

But I still don't get the classic ladder interface...What am I doing
wrong?

   Thanks,
Dave

[Emc-users] Starting a new project

2007-10-21 Thread Dave Keeton

   Thanks,
