I've not had any trouble with that as I ignore the index from the omron
encoder on the motors back shaft, instead using a screw glued to the
side of the spindle to trip an ATS-667 hall effect for an index pulse. I
scale change from the tally switches on the gearshift knob. So my tach
display is dead accurate in either gear. I say dead accurate, the scale
was determined by subtracting the encoder count at 3 turns from the
encoder count at 103 turns and dividing that by shifting the decimal
point two digits left, instant 1% accuracy in either gear.

I finally did find my round tuit and measured my column tilt, worst case
was x, off about 3 thou in the height of that circular square, so my
major error is tramming related. On the go704, that tilt is very hard to
correct, no vernier available.

I have used one of the 30A20AC drives, and there was another used to
pump hydraulic fluid at work. Both of those came with heat sinks from
the factory. Neither got particularly hot. I think I would still add
a heat sink.

In the FWIW category Jon, 143 watts at full song says they almost have
to be ancient analog designs.

With electrolytic caps that are probably well past their use by date.

Whereas your own pwm-servo I've got 3 of, doesn't run anywhere near that
much heat in normal
operation spinning a spindle motor. Ultrasonic switch mode stuff doesn't
make a lot of heat.
I don't want to guess at the knee weight  on the b-port, but the xy
can be handled with a pair of
the 3NM 3 phase stepper/servo's, by direct drive to the screw. Ought to
be able to get 100 IPM for

rapids.

Are you going to motorize the quill too? It can move faster than the
knee in most cases but with

limited travel.

I think you might be underestimating the bearings.

If we assume that they are 40mm bore angular contact bearings:

https://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/p20530065/UKF-719USS40A21I1L-Super-Precision-Angular-Contact-Spindle-Bearing-40x62x12mm/product_info.html

Rated dynamic load (for a single bearing) is 10,800N or 2500lbf.

So you wouldn't want to go to 5000 bushel-cubits[1] very often, but
it's not orders of magnitude out.

[1] Don't bother, it's not dimensionally correct,

These match the current specs of the NC400's that came
with the machine.  But, for the Z axis, maybe less current
would be fine. I'm guessing that 30 A into those motors
with a 2:1 belt reduction would likely give 1000 Lbs of
linear force on the table.  It seems that would be enough
to damage the spindle bearings.  I have no way to know
what the current limit on the existing Z amp was set to,
but I am assuming it was set quite a bit less.  So, I'm
looking at an AMC 16A20 amp for the Z (16 A peak 8A
continuous).

One data point, on my old 1J head machine, the power
downfeed was set to kick out at 200 Lbs.  I have no idea
what the limits of the BOSS 8 machine are, but I would
guess they sure don't want more than about 500 Lbs linear
force on the spindle bearings.  Am I on the right track?

YIKES!  I did the measurement of motor torque at the
leadscrew, and with 3 Amps applied, I got 10 Lbs force on a
fish scale at 1.625" radius.  (There's a 2:1 reduction
between motor and leadscrew.)

Doing some calculations on that, I get that 30A (peak
rating) will get 5110 Lbs linear force on every axis.  I
guess this is needed to get good acceleration on the XY axes
due to mass of table and saddle, but that seems VERY
dangerous to the spindle bearings.  So, I think I answered
my own question that the lower-rated servo amp should be
totally sufficient for the Z motor.  I did measure the pots
on the old servo amps and they seemed to all be turned up to
full current limit.

but peaking during a direction reversal (rigid tapping) at 165-170 volts,

Re: [Emc-users] R2E3 retrofit

2022-07-02 Thread John Dammeyer
Hi Jon,
Last year I bought a stepper motor driver off Amazon that had an annoying
whine. And it was one of the more popular brands. Couldn't stand it.

I contacted Bergerda in China, who's servos and drives I now use, and asked if
their stepper drivers had the same problem since the outside of the box looked
the same. Got an interesting response about companies that copy and resell at
much lower costs over there.

So since I wanted a new servo for the knee motor on my mill I had him also
include a couple of stepper drives. And yes, the inside of the box is
dramatically different. Now that's the steppers of course.

The servo drives from Bergerda do not make the motors I have whine. They claim
that many of the cheaper motor/drive combinations also cut corners on things
like encoders. Donald Chen at Bergerda told me they use the more expensive
Japanese encoders. So I pulled a motor apart and looked up some numbers and
did some googling. Sure enough they are Japanese products but made in China.
So Donald wasn't stretching the truth there.

I've been so impressed with both the support and the quality of the Bergerda
drives and motors that now my mill is running with those instead of HP_UHU DC
Servos and Gecko driven Stepper motors.

The only other drive I have is a STMBL open source drive for the Harmonic
Drive. I bought my boards from Andy and finished the assembly here. It's an
open source project with reasonable support but not completely turn key. My
harmonic drive also doesn't whine.

Depending on voltage an current requirements the STMBL might just be the best
solution for you. I'm sure Andy can provide much more detail on how well they
work.

Well, now that I have all 3 servo amps connected to motors,
the whine is quite loud, and closing the cabinet makes
little difference.  My ear protectors are designed not to
cut voice frequencies, so the 5 KHz goes right through
them!  Ugh, they have got to go.  I have verified that all 3
of them work, so I ought to be able to sell them on eBay.
The X axis is pretty well stuck, only the ballscrew is
strong enough to move it.  I guess I will have to loosen the
gibs and try to lift and slide it off.  Then, I'll be able
to get into the lube orifices.

So, a bit more of a job to retrofit than I had been hoping
for. Of course, depending on 40+ year old servo amps to keep
on working may not have been a great plan, anyway.  I
ordered an AMC 30A20 servo amp (30 A peak, 200 V max) on
eBay, but I only found one at a reasonable price.  Anybody
know where to look for servo amps? HGR didn't seem to have
much, but maybe I was using the wrong search terms.

Sometimes, when I 'hear' something I will realize I felt the vibrations on
my skin.

The V2E3 I started with used to squeal mightily when the
amps were enabled.

Just an update.  I am jury-rigging power to various things
and finally got enough stuff set up so I had analog/logic
power on the servo amps and could put 84 V DC on the power
section.  I did hear a 5 KHz whine from the one amp that was
actually connected to a motor, but it was not very loud.
I'm guessing that with the cabinet closed and fans running,
it won't be all that bad.  Going from 60 - 84 V did  not
seem to make it much louder.  I was able to turn the offset
pot and make it move faster or slower or go the other
direction.  I'm only moving the Y axis as the lube metering
orifices seem to be clogged up, and Y is the only one that
is getting any visible oil.  I have ordered a bunch of
missing handles, way wipers, Kwik-Switch tooling and a
bigger VFD.  I think Stuart Stevenson's Dah-Lih at MPM had
NC400 amps, and the whine was astoundingly loud, even with
ear protectors on.  I was worried about that, and if it had
been even 20 dB less than that machine, I would have had to
replace my servo amps.

Awesome!

When I bought my Bridgeport R2E3 it came with a bunch of manuals, which
Stuart Stevenson kindly scanned into PDFs. I contacted Bridgeport and
got permission to redistribute them:

The V2E3 I started with used to squeal mightily when the amps were

I had to pull the rigid ram and head off the machine as an assembly,
to clear my doorway.  Does anybody have some hints on how to go about
reassembling that?  My plan is to remove the Z servo and the spindle
motor, then take the head off the ram, install the ram back on the
base and then hoist the head back up on the ram.  An issue with this
is that I have very limited ceiling height of about 92", so getting my
engine crane to lift it from above may be very difficult.  One
possible plan is to lift the head onto the table with some kind of
cribbing and then use the knee screw to lift the hear into position.

I am real familiar with the 1J head on my old mill, but don't really
know how to get the 2J BOSS-style motor off the head and varispeed.
Any suggestions on that are welcome.

Re: [Emc-users] R2E3 retrofit

2022-06-25 Thread John Figie
Jon,

I am not real familiar with the R2E3 but I have a Series II interact 2
with a fixed head. I have the Bridgeport manual that tells how to
remove the head and motor. Before I moved to my new location I needed
to remove the head from the machine to get it in and out of the
garage. From pictures I think the mechanical parts of the head R3E3
might be the same once the additional extra cowling is removed?

I had to pull the rigid ram and head off the machine as an
