Re: [e-users] distrobutions
quote who=Carsten Haitzler if i had the time... i'd do a distro. just for myself of all people! :) i'd love to actually do a distro that's stripped down - no apache no mysql no openldap in fact no gimp, etc. basically just what u need to install, log in, and run a terminal, download some files, maybe browse a website or 3, read e-mail. all things like gimp would be add-on packages (of course an easy to use package fetcher would be included), but all of this is a side-line. i'd like to make it ULTRA FAST to boot. make it boot in about 3-5 seconds to your login manager. this is perfectly possible. in fact it can be done in under seconds if you REALLY want (it's been done) :) Many including me use Gentoo which fulfil above requirements for precisely those reasons. The bare time to boot has been 10-15 seconds before I added cups, apache and other stuff to run levels. And that's with framebuffer and bootsplash. I know that evidence can use LOTS of add'l packages, but doesn't require them. I tried to go with the bare minimum of what it requires and couldn't get it to compile. Looking I checked out the entire e17 tree and compiled almost everything in the order specified on http://www.enlightenment.org/pages/cvsnotes.html using optional configure parameters from README files in directories checked out. However, it is true that you need much less for evidence. I got entrance, evidence and examine working though and was playing with all of them. I was intending to do a how-to on this whole issue but time is very short these days. The idea by Andrew Elcock was a very good one and I also did what he said. I emerged under Gentoo those packages which were not specific to E and checked out everything that was E related just before compilation. However, I would not suggest that one rely on gentoo packages for E-cvs related stuff as they frequently go out of date and if installed can be messy to keep up to date in combination with cvs checkouts. --- This SF. Re: [e-users] Loading of special fonts for new 16.6 themes?
John C wrote: question, is there any specific configuration file to edit to have access to the fonts I just extracted from the tarball? Thanks for posting the themes and fonts, but I'm not quite sure I know how to have access to the fonts, although I know E will find the themes right away... Thanks, John C. The tarball produces a folder called myfonts containing all the fonts. Move that folder to where your X server stores fonts and add that location or fontpath to your /etc/X11/XF86Config[-4]. This location may be something like those below. /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ /usr/share/fonts/ Then go into the directory 'myfonts' and run `mkfontdir` and `mkfontscale` and restart your XServer to load new fonts. Now view the file fonts.dir in the 'myfonts' folder. The second column for each line contains the keyword that you must feed to Eterm. So for the line which says 'mints-mild.pcf.gz mints-mild' you can do `Eterm -F mints-mild` to get Eterm to use that font. You can of course combine that with other parameters to Eterm to produce the desired effect. I much prefer .tar.gz over .etheme unless I'm doing something horribly wrong. What is the proper way to use them? I just put them in ~/.enlightenment/themes/, reload E and run the theme but that doesn't work.
