As I have mentioned before, Debian is trying to incorporate the
p[ipewire system only as a sound server in a Gnome-specific way, which
makes the pipewire system, as I have often said, a very special
structure not found anywhere else.

The fact that you can't install pipewire-alsa (which is created as a
module that performs an important function), or that you don't have to
include libcamera, are just a few examples of this.

pipewire-alsa is installed, it has always been. What i can't install is
pipewire-media-session.

It is out of line to say that there is a problem in trying to use that
particular pipewire system for enlightenment, isn't it?

It is, at least for me.

I tried to boot my system with my headphone already turned on, i've
never did it before, and i found that it connects to the laptop when gdm
starts. After gdm exits and the enlightenment session is started my
headphone are disconnected for a few seconds and then reconnected. My
guess is that this disconnection happens because the sound server is
restarted between session change and the mixer module is started in that
little time, so it doesn't find any server. Is there a way to run
pipewire in a system wide way so that it doesn't need to be restarted
when launching a Xorg session?

Enlightenment itself does not incorporate the pipewire system at all,
and yet I believe that it is in the realm of self-responsibility for
us, the users, to dare to use the pipewire system.

Regards & Good Night

Tell me the product name and manufacturer of the bluetooth device you
are using.

It's a dongle, lsusb identifies it as follows:
ID 0a12:0001 Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd Bluetooth Dongle (HCI mode)

The laptop has an internal usb device that some time ago stopped
working, so i had to buy this dongle and also had to deactivate the
internal chip via this udev rule:
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="04ca", ATTRS{idProduct}=="3018",
ATTR{authorized}="0"

Anyway the mixer issue was present also when the internal usb was working.

You may be right, but pipewire makes libcamera necessary and
indispensable.
The pipewire is not just a sound server like pulseaudio, but a server
for processing audio, video streams, and hardware.

Don't you have libcamera installed?
It should require it to be installed due to dependencies.

I really don't understand debian.

Yes, create it.

I don't know about debian, but in my case, there exist files in the folder
/usr/share/pipewire/media-session.
If it's the same as this,  execute follows;

$ sudo cp /usr/share/pipewire/media-session.d/with-pulseaudio
/etc/pipewire/media-session.d
$ sudo cp /usr/share/pipewire/media-session.d/with-alsa
/etc/pipewire/media-session.d
$ sudo cp /usr/share/pipewire/media-session.d/buez-monitor.conf
/etc/pipewire/media-session.d

If the different place, you can find them;

# cd /usr/share

# find ./ -name with-pulseaudio -o -name with-alsa -o -name bluez-monitor.conf

As I keep saying, your problem is not one of enlightenment, but of
pipewire.

If you ask Google, she will show you a number of reports of pipewire
problems involving bluetooth.

I'm having a hard time supporting you because you haven't shown me how
well you've done what I've shown you.

I told you to create a "with-pulseaudio" file, did you create the file?

If you did, then execute this;

$ sudo cp /usr/share/pipewire/media-session.d/bluez-monitor.conf /etc/pipewire

I don't have such file nor any of the files you did mention, i guess it

reboot to see if it works.

If you did, then execute this;

$ sudo cp /usr/share/pipewire/media-session.d/bluez-monitor.conf /etc/pipewire

reboot to see if it works.

Regards.

Re: [e-users] enlightenment audio default device issue

2023-03-03 Thread Massimo Maiurana
Update: looks like my problem is not actually mixer not recognizing
pipewire, it's just that the mixer icon is not working after E starts.

Mixer itself is working as i can click on the shelf icon, click on
"mixer" button to open the dialog and there i can see that all is fine:
soundcard is recognized, bluetooth is also there, all sliders and
checkboxes are working.

What's not working is the shelf icon. It doesn't display available
soundcards nor bluetooth devices and it lacks its blue circle
representing the volume level. I cannot even change volume scrolling on it.

Also, i don't see the mixer icon that is usually on the titlebar of
windows which requires access to audio control, for example firefox on
youtube. But i can see the slider for firefox volume in the mixer dialog
when i open a youtube video and i can adjust its volume as i like.

Reloading mixer module makes all working again as expected.

As you can see, in your case, the sampling rate is 48Khz, which sounds

However, I do not know under what conditions a bluetooth device will

AFAIK xinit is not used if Xorg is executed via a display manager. I
don't have any xinitrc file in my homedir. For system wide configuration
there is /etc/gdm3/Init/Default and i don't know if an user

Reloading mixer is not an annoying task as i don't reboot frequently my
laptop.

Thanks for your help!

Massimo

  Next is breaking the curse for bluetooth.

I mean, this is a trick to prevent pipewire from not recognizing
bluetooth devices.

Ok.

Please return the pipewire-related status to the status indicated by

Then reboot, and immediately after boot, do the following and show the

Following is the output and it's pretty much the same both before reboot

this would be a pipewire issue (or deeper down - kernel, udev? some device

e's mixer doesn't even remember what audio device was used last - it does not
try to restore it. it leaves this up to pulse audio. yes - i know you use
pipewire. from e's point of view, it's talking to pulse audio - so it uses
libpluse to do that. :) pipewire can emulate pulse in this way so anything that
deals with pulse can just work with pipewire.

Well, I didn't know e mixer doesn't remember audio device priority. I
have to know why, sometimes, priority changes. May be because,
sometimes, i launch two X session in same time... I use pipewire-git and
wireplumber-git ; they work fine, much better than pulseaudio in my
case. I have to investigate then I'll report this issue upstream.

Thanks

I had heard rumors that debian's packages were peculiar, but I am

the pipewire's bluetooth module.

I don't have any problem with bluetooth. Now i installed pipewire-alsa,
removed pulseaudio included its bluetooth module and still mixer doesn't
detect the audio server at startup. Reloading it makes it see it. The
only bluetooth module installed is now libspa-0.2-bluetooth and my
bluetooth headphones are still working.

It seems to me that pipewire is still in the testing phase in debian,
though?

Basically, it is a debian problem, not the enlightenment problem, so
you should ask the debian ML.

Your package configuration is incorrect.

First, the following packages are missing;

pipewire-alsa

Trying to install this it asks to remove the whole pulseaudio installation.

pipewire-module-x11

Not present in debian

pipewire-spa-plugins

Not present in debian

pipewire-tools

Not present in debian

pipewire-spa-tools

Not present in debian

alsa-plugins-pulse

Not present in debian

pipewire-aptx (if exists)

Not present in debian

Second, the following package is unnecessary;

gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio

What did you decide the configuration based on?

I've never decided to install pipewire explicitly, it must have been
pulled in by some other package installation.

The idea that it is good enough if it just works should be stopped.

Under the pipewire, at minimum, you will need to install the
libspa-0.2-plugins  package, remove the pulseaudio-module-bluetooth
package, and then either reboot your computer or restart the PipeWire
services, otherwise device connections will fail with "Protocol not
available".

libspa-0.2-plugins is not in the list of available debian packages. Look
here for available pipewire packages in bookworm:

https://packages.debian.org/search?suite=bookworm=pipewire

Your package configuration is incorrect.

First, the following packages are missing;

pipewire-alsa
pipewire-module-x11
pipewire-spa-plugins
pipewire-tools
pipewire-spa-tools
alsa-plugins-pulse
pipewire-aptx (if exists)

Second, the following package is unnecessary;

gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio

this would be a pipewire issue (or deeper down - kernel, udev? some device
being unplugged and plugged in?).

e's mixer doesn't even remember what audio device was used last - it does not
try to restore it. it leaves this up to pulse audio. yes - i know you use
pipewire. from e's point of view, it's talking to pulse audio - so it uses
libpluse to do that. :) pipewire can emulate pulse in this way so anything that
deals with pulse can just work with pipewire.

How do you know the daemon is running?

As i said, if they weren't running the mixer module wouldn't find them
not even after reload. Instead it does, so i assume it finds a daemon to
talk to, and indeed i can see they are up and running:

max@diamante:~$ ps aux | grep pipe
max 2346  0.3  0.7 182864 93708 ?Ssl  feb20  25:37
/usr/bin/pipewire
max 2351  6.1  5.7 1444696 701900 ?  SLsl feb20 412:31
/usr/bin/pipewire-pulse

If the daemon is running, it should work with doing this;

$ systemctl --user start pipewire pipewire-pulse wireplumber

What Distro are you using?

Debian testing

Usually, the usage in Linux is as follows;

   $ systemctl --user daemon-reload
   $ systemctl --user start pipewire pipewire-pulse wireplumber

It is essential to start the pipewire daemon.

The daemons are running of course, if they weren't running the mixer
module wouldn't find them not even after reload.

I just go to the modules dialog (Menu/settings/modules), select the
mixer module, click on unload and then on load (maybe in english they
are named differently).

It looks to me like the pipewire server execution needs a bit of extra
time so after e starts it's not already available; reloading it after e
is up and running make the module find it, and since i don't reboot
frequently i can live with it :)

On my Arch system, e mixer module always detect audio server. I never
met your problem. Mentionned below issue happens randomly, even after

About your case, if you need to unload and reload e mixer module to get
audio server working, it's not normal, it's an issue
