[EVDL] Battery size for a 40 ton 18 wheel truck with a 200+ mile range

2015-11-03 Thread Larry Gales via EV
I'm trying to determine the battery size for an 18 wheel (40 ton) truck
with a 200+ mile range. There is a 20 ton bus (see:
http://www.byd.com/na/auto/40feet.html ) with a range of >155 miles and a
battery size of 324 kWh. So, for 210 miles that would be about 463 kWh.

According to a graph (figure 7) in:

http://www.goodyeartrucktires.com/pdf/resources/service-manual/Retread_S9_V.pdf
the MPG declines from 5 to about 4.2 when the weight goes from 20 tons to
40 tons, so I would estimate that the truck would need about a 550 kWh
battery.

Does that sound reasonable, or am I missing something?

Thanks,

Re: [EVDL] Battery size for a 40 ton 18 wheel truck with a 200+ milerange

2015-11-03 Thread Cor van de Water via EV
That sounds exactly right.
My truck does a litle over 1/2 kWh per mile at minimum freeway speed due
to
Wider than standard tires, thick oil and most importantly, the
energy-robbing
Automatic transmission. Similar light trucks that I have seen and driven
had
Lower kWh per mile numbers (closer to 400Wh/mi) while a continuous 55
MPH
Could be maintained with only 15kW of power, which gives you an absolute
Minimum energy requirement of 15/55 = 272 Wh/mi but this is not taking
realistic
Driving conditions into account, so I will stick with a more realistic
worst case
Of 1/2 kWh per mile for a light truck that in ICE version achieves 20-25
MPG.
Since your 40 ton truck achieves 5-6 times higher consumption (4.2 MPG)
the
Expected electric energy consumption can be expected to be 2.5 - 3 kWh
per mile.
For a 200 mile range, you are looking at between 500 and 600 kWh of
batteries,
Exactly like you calculated.
Regards,
Cor.

Extrapolating on their design ...
(210mi / 60mi = 3.5), (3.5 * 112kWh = 392kWh)
 a 400kWh pack might provide a 200+mi range @25mph.

Since you are likely going to drive at 55mph, much more power would be used
at those higher speeds, thus a larger than 400kWh pack will be needed.

Once you have chosen a pack size, you will need to be able to charge it. A
50kW charger on a 400kWh pack it would take 10 hours. So, you will also need
to look into a high powered EVSE to recharge it. I would not bother with a
CHAdeMO or Combo EVSE (unless you had other uses for it and you have money
to burn). Perhaps a Siemens EVSE, see

It sure sounds impossible, without a "trick" of some sort. For example,
maybe the roof is covered in PV panels and they will make the trip at 10
mph. Or it's a "racing shell" that looks like a bus but only weighs 10%
of what a real bus weighs. Or it's literally stuffed clear full of some
unobtainium superbattery.

Nevertheless, 1000 miles on a single charge *is* possible. It's been
done a few times, with special vehicles on closed tracks at very low
speeds. Here's the latest example:

Student Built Motorbikes

The number of buses, taxis and other vehicles on Kenya’s roads is growing
every day.

Now, the country’s first electric-powered motorbike is being made. The bike
is designed to cut down on pollution and aimed at low-income communities.

Most motorbikes used in Kenya depend on gasoline as fuel. But not this new
motorbike. Its energy comes from sunlight.

Three university students developed the new ecotran bike. It captures the
sun’s energy, stores it in batteries and uses it to charge the electric
motor.

Robert Achoge is one of the student inventors.

"Our hope is that by the fifth year, we will be able to cover the whole of
Kenya with the electric motorcycle so as to conserve the environment and
provide affordable transport."

The students have set up a ‘fueling’ station for the motorbikes in Nairobi.
Riders can plug the bikes into any electrical outlet. The small battery can
run for 70 kilometers when fully charged. Once the power is used up, the
motorbike has to return to the fueling station while another charged battery
is connected to the bike.

The U.S. African Development Foundation is providing financing for two
solar-powered charging stations in the Kenyan port of Kisumu.

Each ecotran bike costs about $700. One motorcycle taxi operator says the
new bike costs less to operate than bikes running on traditional fuel.

"When it comes to buying fuel there's no need. It's basically good for
various errands. Even though you won't carry quite a heavy load, you can go
with it anywhere."

A Nairobi dealership is selling the ecotran bikes. Businessman Kennedy
Kusimba hopes they will become popular.

"We also know they are more reliable compared to the gas-powered bikes. They
are more efficient and they tend to last longer."

Ecotran plans to go to market with 40 bikes in 2016.

This guy has got skills.

French artist Sebastien “Mr.D” Boileau is a veteran graffiti artist with a
resume chock-full of impressive projects. One of his most recent art pieces
that really caught our attention is his awesome work on a BMW i3 Art Car.
The little five-door electric Bimmer is BMW's first mass-produced zero
emissions vehicle. The US version of the car has a range of 81 miles per
charge which can be extended to 150 miles with BMW’s optional
range-extending 170 hp gas engine. The i3 is an ideal city car and Mr. D’s
graffiti makes it stand out perfectly in an urban setting.

The artist absolutely covered the little hybrid Bimmer in bright colored
paint in his signature style using plenty of graffiti cans and paintbrushes.
The BMW i3 art car is officially up for sale or lease and all of the
proceeds from will be given to the Texan-French Alliance for the Arts’

[EVDL] EVLN: CNCDA gets CA-DMV threatening Tesla w/ using bird-dog-fees

2015-11-03 Thread brucedp5 via EV

http://www.sacbee.com/news/business/article41876934.html
Sacramento auto group claims DMV memo aimed at Tesla’s ad practices
October 29, 2015 Mark Glover

CNCDA says Palo Alto automaker misled public on prices
Blanket memo reportedly does not name Tesla
Trade group says it warned DMV of practices 2 years ago

Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk, above, got a letter from the California DMV
challenging a buyer incentive program.

The state Department of Motor Vehicles, which recently sent Tesla Motors CEO
Elon Musk a warning letter contending that the automaker’s “referral
program” violated California laws, subsequently sent a memo that a
Sacramento-based trade association claims is aimed at Tesla’s false
advertising practices.

The California New Car Dealers Association on Thursday issued a media
release saying that, more than two years ago, it alerted the DMV to
“numerous advertising violations by Tesla.” The association claims DMV
“finally issued a memorandum reminding manufacturer advertisers about
truth-in-advertising laws.”

The group said the memo was issued this month and authored by Timothy
Corcoran, DMV’s occupational licensing compliance unit chief. CNCDA says the
memo does not mention Palo Alto-based electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla by
name.

CNCDA said the memo includes a warning about advertising a “net price” for
the purchase of electric vehicles. CNCDA says the memo warns that
“manufacturers of electronic vehicles are advertising prices, which are not
the manufacturers’ suggested retail price or cash price, but rather the ‘net
price’ after deducting a potential federal tax credit, California rebate and
other ‘savings.’

“These are false advertisements (and) mislead consumers and violate
truth-in-advertising laws.”

“We couldn’t agree more,” Brian Maas, CNCDA president, said in a statement.

The memo, available on the DMV’s website, says the DMV will immediately
begin to “enforce advertising laws with accusations against manufacturers’
licenses, and with referral of such cases to local, state, and federal
prosecutors.”

“The DMV actively investigates complaints against occupational licensees,
and takes appropriate action in the interest of the public’s protection,”
said DMV spokeswoman Jessica Gonzalez.

Attempts to get comment from Tesla on Thursday were unsuccessful.

CNCDA said it asked the DMV in September 2013 to investigate Tesla’s website
marketing for leasing a Model S, in which Tesla included potential
availability of incentives as part of payment quotes.

Earlier this month, The Sacramento Bee obtained a copy of a Sept. 29 DMV
letter sent to Musk that said Tesla’s online-advertised referral program
violated California laws.

The program described on Tesla’s website said anyone ordering a “new (Tesla)
Model S before Oct. 31 using the referral link of a current owner will get
$1,000 off the purchase price. In return, the current owner will get a
$1,000 discount that can be applied to a new car, service center visit or
accessory. New orders must be placed prior to Oct. 31, 2015.”

In his letter to Musk, Frank Alvarez, chief of DMV’s Investigations
Division, described the Tesla offer as “a practice commonly referred to in
the vehicle sales industry as offering ‘bird dog fees,’ ” and warned of
possible state action if the practice continued.

A prototype all-electric bus that its developers say can be driven from
Melbourne to Sydney on a single on charge was unveiled in Melbourne on
Friday, ahead of a road-test on Saturday that will see it undertake the
interstate journey.

The launch, held at Yuroke, one hour north of Melbourne’s CBD, by
Australia-based company Brighsun, showcased a total of four prototype full
electric buses ranging from high range capacity route service passenger
buses to touring coaches.

Federal environment minister Greg Hunt attended the launch, and confirmed
that the bus was officially certified, to international standards, to drive
a huge 1004km on one charge. The next biggest range our research efforts
could find for an electric bus was less than half of that, at about 402km,
in a US model.

The buses run on a high performance lithium-ion battery combined with
proprietary eMotor, battery management and a regenerative breaking system.

Brighsun CEO Allen Saylav, also a director of the ... Society of Automotive
Engineers Australasia (SAE), said the technology behind the bus – in
development for four years – had evolved from a desire to deliver clean,
sustainable public transport options.

“We believe this technology could change the face of public transport around
the world and with the use of the eVehicle propulsion system which creates
long lasting life in vehicles,” Saylav said.

The company also has plans to open manufacturing plants for the e-buses
across Australia. There was no information available, as yet, on the
charging technology the buses will use, or the source of electricity,
although comments from the company suggest renewable energy could be a part
of the plan.

“New energy is key to Australia’s auto industry revitalisation,” said
Saylav, “and we believe the eBus is the first step in the right direction
for this to happen.

“We chose the heavy commercial passenger vehicle to showcase how high
performance could be achieved in larger transportation options,” as well as
in passenger cars.

Also attending the launch were delegates from the US, the Middle East and
Asia, as well as key industry players including representatives from VLine,
Fleet Partners and SkyBus.

[EVDL] Hypermiling for better range

(Qualifier: there are likely other evdl members that are more experienced
than I on this topic, and I ask for their input and corrections)

I am thinking Lawrence' post is on the heels of his last post about the
SF<->LA L3 EVSE gaps. It looks like he is considering that rare long EV
trip that would benefit from a L3 charging ability and confirm how wise it
was to pay a little extra to have a full powered 6kW L2 charger on-board.
IMO no one should consider buying an EV that does not have both of these.
While most of the time L1 at home or work is fine, there are those few times
when it is nice to be able to push the quick charging envelope ( = lets you
enjoy your EV doing something you rarely do/do the least).

I first looked at what can be done to improve range, by tapping into the
many sites discussing this. Any site that discusses tricks and tips to
improve mpg (or mpge) would apply. Here are a few links:

But Lawrence is not driving a less efficient ice converted to EV (like my
former S-10 Blazer EV). He is driving a purpose built Nissan Leaf production
EV. For the price, the Leaf has already been optimized for efficiency by
design (even those frog eye like headlight lens are to help aerodynamics by
sending the wind around the side mirrors, etc.).

So, placing rear wheel well and front grill air dams will only help a
fraction. A better thought is to work with what you have. And to begin with
knowing what Wh/mile to expect of your EV. The following shows highway
Wh/mile rating for a few EVs, that will seem higher than what some have been
getting. But if you use them, you can not be hurt when planing a trip.

What really wastes energy is those pesky-human driving habits (racing to the
next red light, etc.). EAA old timers from the old PbSO4 conversion days,
when getting 40+ miles range @55mph was the norm, know that driving your EV
at a constant lower speed, and like there is an egg between your foot and
the accelerator pedal, maximizes range. There are many people that enjoy
maximizing their driving range (EV or ice). They are called Hypermillers.
Here is a link specifically for Leaf EV hypermilling:

hypermiling procedures

IMO I suggest Lawrence spend less time trying to improve the Leaf, and
mostly focus on learning how to hypermill his Leaf EV for maximum range.

Note: in my experience from long ago driving my 2ton lead-sled conversion EV
repeatedly on long trips to prove L3 quick charging was viable, all my
hypermilling tricks paid off on the first-time trip (slowly getting up to
and staying at a constant 55mph). But I found that on repeated trips on the
same route, I was much more comfortable about my range ability, and the
trips were more enjoyable.

When thinking about this during the recharging times, it seemed to me that
my human mind was over-thinking like a protection mechanism. It wasn't until
I actually had the experience did I know what could and could not be done.

After a few long distance trips (initially quite careful, and more confident
on repeated trips), I began to know my EV really well. This relieved me of
that over thinking, to now focus on having a plan of secondary charging
locations (encase the one I planed on was down or in use). Today with so
many EVs on the road, having a couple back up plans for charging is wise,
especially on long trips (thanks plugshare.com ).

I have a EV trip experience from a Leaf driver to share. A SJEAA member that
would be coming from deep in San Jose (Blossom Hill area, jct of Hwy 101 &
Hwy 85), wanted to make a round trip to Treasure island (its an island east
of SF in the middle of the bay).

At that time, there was no public EVSE on the island, and there was far less
public L2 EVSE
