As far as I know, all of the Tesla’s are available without the Full Self
Driving and Autopilot software. Since you have to pay extra for those
features, they are cheaper. Maybe you meant something different?

Actually, all I have to do on my Tesla Y is use my thumb to push the right hand
knob on the steering wheel and tell the car what I want to do with the climate
control (“increase fan speed by 2” or “increase temperature by 3 degrees”). So
I don’t have to reach for anything or take my eyes off of the road to adjust
the climate control. That’s one advantage of having the “screen-based”
controls.

I know that the controls are different than the hardware-based ones. I’ve been
driving for over 50 years and it only took me a few minutes to understand and
work the new controls. Now they seem much easier to use. That said, Teslas may
not be ideal as rental vehicles for those folks who don’t own one.

Re: [EVDL] Why Toyota Isn't Rushing to Sell You an Electric

2023-05-19 Thread John Blair via EV
Toyota is listed on the New York Stock Exchange (as well as other stock
exchanges): TM. I held that stock for a number of years until I decided I did
not like their philosophy on EV’s. I owned a first generation 2002 RAV4-EV and
loved that car (I removed the rear seats to make it into a “micro-van”) and
still own a 2013 second generation RAV4-EV (EV parts designed by Tesla) which I
like very much. Neither car were great for long distance traveling although I
drove the 2013 multiple times between Northern California and Southern
California after the addition of a fast charging CHAdeMO port (by QC Charge).

Re: [EVDL] Ford F-150 Reveal - Great for everyone!

2021-05-22 Thread John Blair via EV
I’ve had two EV’s like that. The first was my 1980 ComutaCar that I drove for
20 years. It held two people and a few bags of groceries, hit 38 mph on the
flat for about 35 miles. It was a lightweight car, but I loved it. It was great
in a city. It was not great on hills so when I moved to a rural area with lots
of steep hills, I sold it. The next one was a used 2002 Toyota RAV4-EV. We
pulled the two rear seats out (it seats five) and it was a micro-van. I could
carry my fire gear and two wet german shepherd dogs without messing anything
up. It had a range of up to 100 miles and easily drove on hills and freeways.
I sold it after I bought my Tesla (needed the long range) and because it was
losing range and a lack of support. Both were great cars. In both cases,
service was ultimately an issue.

Re: [EVDL] [GGEVA] Electrify America, CCS & Bolt; ADA (from GGEVA)

2021-05-21 Thread John Blair via EV
I have both a Tesla Model 3 and a Toyota RAV4-EV. I had an aftermarket CHAdeMO
port added to the RAV so I could access higher speed charging.
I have driven both of them on long distance trips (around 1000 miles RT) and
the differences in charging experience are large. With the RAV, there
is often just one or two charging stations. About 25% of the time one of the
stations is down or the card reader doesn’t work. You use a RFID card
belonging to the station brand (like the old gas station credit cards). The
newer stations seem to have a kiosk added so regular credit cards can be
used. You have to read the instructions on the small screens to get the
charging started. Each brand seems to be different. The connector and cable
are quite large and heavy.

With the Tesla, you simply pull up and plug in. It is much faster and easier.
The station recognizes the car and automagically charges your generic
credit card on file, like the FasTrak system for the toll roads and bridges
here in California. The cable is much lighter (even though it carries 2-3
times
the amps) and shorter plus the connector is 1/4 the size. It would be much
easier for a disabled person to operate. I rarely find a broken Tesla station
and I find there are usually 10-40 stations at each location. The stations are
usually closer to main highways. Messages are displayed on the car’s large
screen rather than a small screen on the charging station. You can monitor
progress from inside the car.

In our area, gasoline stations are open 24 hours, but the store and attendant
are only there a much shorter time. So at night, you can only pay with a
credit card and not cash.

Re: [EVDL] EV1

2021-04-13 Thread John Blair via EV
In 1987, GM hired a small California R company to build the Sunraycer, a
solar-powered EV to enter into the first solar car race across Australia. That
company was AeroVironment, founded in 1971 and led by Dr Paul MacCready, a
world-renowned engineer and scientist. Paul had developed the Gossamer Condor,
a man-powered airplane that crossed the English Channel and won the Henry
Kramer prize. That was followed by several more aircraft including the Solar
Challenger, a solar-powered aircraft that flew from Paris to London. The
Sunraycer easily won the race. A year later, Alec Brooks, AV’s lead engineer
on the project, proposed designing an EV sports car to GM. They eventually
bought into the idea and the Santana project was born. The prototype was
finished in time for the 1990 Auto Show, but the name Santana was already
registered to Volkswagen. So GM chose the name “Impact”. It was immediately
ridiculed, so the name of the production version was changed to EV1.

I was lucky enough to be hired straight out of college by AV as an engineer,
scientist, and later manager. I was employee number 8. After suffering through
the oil and gas crisis of 1973, I knew I wanted an EV. In 1980 I purchased a
new ComutaCar and used it to commute to work. Paul MacCready saw it and
immediately wanted a ride. I like to think that I gave him his first ride in
an EV and perhaps planted a seed that bore fruit years later.

Besides Paul and Alec, a lot of other well-known EV names like Wally Rippel,
Alan Cocconi, and many others, perhaps some in this discussion group, took part
in this adventure. For a very detailed and interesting history of the EV-1,
read the book “The Car That Could”, by Michael Shnayerson ©1996 (ISBN
0-679-42105-X).

Re: [EVDL] Chademo still lagging behind on the west coast electric Hwy I-5 CCS adequate.

2018-07-30 Thread John Blair via EV
Hi Lawrence,

I am in a similar situation. I drive 4-5 times a year on a 1100 mile round
trip between Northern California and Southern California. I drive my RAV4-EV
with an aftermarket CHAdeMO port. It has an extended range of 125 miles. Even
driving at 60 mph, I don’t seem to get more than about 110 miles when it is
loaded with a couple of German Shepherds and all of our gear. I aim for a max
of 100 miles between charging stops and drive along Hwy 101. The difficult
spot is between Salinas and San Luis Obispo. You can just make it (I have been
told) if you drive 50 mph with a light foot in good weather. There are those
that do that. I spend the night in Paso Robles instead and charge L2 at the
motel overnight. I am ready for a break by then anyway. Because you are using
the maximum range each trip, you are having to spend a lot more time charging
in the “taper”, which is a lot slower than the “up to 50 kW” charge rate.
Typically, I have to charge twice for 45-60 minutes, overnight, and then twice
more.

I just got my new Tesla Model 3LR. It will shave a huge amount of time off of
the drive. I only have to charge twice on the way down: once for 15 minutes
and once for 20 minutes. I will not even use the extended range mode. Because
the charging sessions are short, I will be charging in the sweet spot at 115 kW
(approximately 475 mph). The Model 3LR has much better mileage than the RAV
(or even the other Teslas) and charges quicker as well. I can drive on I-5, a
shorter route and drive at 70 mph instead of 55-60. I will probably stop more
than twice just to stretch our legs, have something to eat and drink, and use
the facilities. As much as I like the RAV and it’s carrying capacity, the
Model 3 will work out much better for the longer trips.

[EVDL] Two EV's to Give Away

2018-01-28 Thread John Blair via EV
We are a four EV family now and that is two too many. We had arranged to
donate them to several schools, but they never followed through to pick them
up. Now it is time to move them on to new homes. We will give each of them
away. Priority will be given to the earliest pickup. Our only request is that
a good faith effort be made to put them back on the road as working EV’s and
not simply part them out. If we wanted to do that, we could easily donate them
to a local charity who would scrap them and we would get a $500 tax deduction
for each of them. Both cars are conversions (not done by me) that were done
with careful attention to detail. They come with notes and manuals to help with
the maintenance.

Until about a year ago, we kept them charged and drove them a mile or two
periodically and maintained while we waited for the school. After sitting for a
year or so outside covered in tarps, they undoubtedly will need some TLC. They
both ran and we had fixed everything that we knew was wrong (except a slow leak
in one tire). The odometer has been fixed in the Saturn. I don't know what the
current range is. Both have all of the details on EVAlbum:

We would prefer to donate to a school or school(s) that have an automotive
program. Second choice would be to a non-profit that will fix them up and use
them. We don’t want them going to an auction house where they would be sold
for scrap or cannibalized for parts. We have already done that with our old
Windstar minivan (our last ICE car).

We had arranged to donate them to a school and did a lot of paperwork for the
