[EVDL] 2020 Nissan Leaf SL+

2021-03-24 Thread AL SWACKHAMMER via EV
Good afternoon folks. Have a question for you. Having a 2020 Leaf SL+
delivered by Carvana. Looks like a driver left it on while traveling from IL.
subsequently draining both the traction battery and the house battery. They
replaced the house battery and was able to charge HV battery. But the dash
cluster did not boot up. Has anyone had this happen or know of a reset
process? Thanks in advance.

So, I'm updating my F250 to use Nissan Leaf modules.
3 modules in parallel, 40 sets in series.
Trying to figure out bus bar size I'll need.
Truck cruises at 60mph, at about 125A.  The 2 mile steep hill from the ferry
will probably be more like 400A (possibly more.)
Would 3/16x3/4 be big enough?

Good morning Dennis,  Thanks for the nice words.  I sent both the Zivans into
Greg at Zivan.  I did not pull any punches and should have told him I had one
less cell than I do.  Honesty sometimes gets in the way.  For what ever reason
they just won't set them up the way we want.  I run them in parallel and one
goes off at 210vdc and the other goes off at 216vdc and does the float.  At the
moment I have the 216v charger not working and need to see why.  Hopefully I
answered your question.

On a side note the DKW is for sale.  So if you know anyone interested it will
be going on Bring a Trailer in the near future.  Al

I had this exact problem and discovered that the controller was programmed at

your 164V pack and see if that solves it.

Re: [EVDL] Azure DMOC Not spinning motor.

2013-11-15 Thread a . swackhammer
Dennis,  You can eliminate the float because the 210v charger does just that.
It shuts off and the 216v charger continues to charge till 216v and then
floats.  I have used these now for three years and have not had any issues with
the cells.  They are really balanced all the time.  I have not heard from
anyone besides Jack Recard (sp) to not float the lithium's.  I have read at
times of folks that have adjusted the chargers themselves.  It seems it has to
be done with the cover off and LIVE.  Everything in these chargers are HOT.  So
be very careful.  I went to a blog on adjusting Zivan chargers and found the
pots for voltage and current I believe.  I have not done any adjusting.  You
can only go so far.  If you let Greg know that is how you want it he will do
that for you.  The ending voltage seems to be the issue, if you only tell him
how many cells you have.  Most people I have talked to or read about say the
voltage he determines is too high.  So they have started to tell him they have
one less cell than they do.  Or add an extra cell to their pack.  Much more
work than to just tell him one less.  Al

Al;

Thanks for the reply.
The problem I see is the float stage. I've heard that you should not float
these lithium's, but shut down the charger when the current gets to ~ .05C.
Phase 1 should charge to 3.5 - 3.6V, and then Phase 2 should hold the voltage,
and taper the current. Looks like you're right there with the voltage.
Do you know where your current is at when you switch to the float stage ?

I have a Zivan NG5, and I may attempt to readjust  this myself, if I could get
some guidance.

Anyone on the list have any experience adjusting these Zivan chargers, and do
you know if you can eliminate the float stage ?

Thanks;

First time posting. After much research I am going ahead with my conversion.
Also, have decided that it would be best if I have it converted by someone
else.
I have a 98 honda civic 5 speed. A 40 mile round trip work commute. Morning is
no traffic approx 20 min. Evening is 40 min with traffic. 90% freeway at
60-70mph. This is in Houston. So Air conditioning is a must.

I had pretty much decided on a HPEVS ac-50 system with 36 LIfepo4 200ah cells.
Then I came across several posts regarding acceleration- an issue I had not
given much thought to - ( achieving the speeds seem to be no problem). Several
places mention a 0 to 60 of 18 seconds with the ac-50 systems. This would be a
problem getting onto the freeways- lots of honking and angry stares ( also
safety). I don't need really high performance, just enough to get on the
freeways in a safe manner without effecting surrounding traffic.
I don't really need the regen benefits of AC in this city- really really flat.
- is the 0 to 60 I have quoted for AC-50 systems accurate/ reliable?
- is a DC system ( warp 9 with zilla 1k) a good alternative?

Thank you
-VS

Three LEAFs - Conversions are fun, but factory-built EVs carry the best
support and warranties
]

Nothing beats the feel of converting your own car to electric, but it's not
always easy to do.

Just five years ago, anyone wanting to own an affordable, highway-capable
electric car faced a difficult decision: find a used previous-generation car
like the RAV4EV, or undertake the time-intensive process of converting a
gasoline car to electric.

With a wide range of factory-built electric cars now on the market, the vast
majority of first-time EV drivers favor the ease of buying an electric car
from a major automaker over a home conversion. Meanwhile, the conversion
market is still alive and well, supported by a growing community of creative
hobbyists.

A Huge Undertaking

Just like working on a vintage car, building a custom motorcycle, or
restoring a hotrod, converting a car from gasoline to electric is a large
undertaking. A self-converted car is more than a car: it’s a hobby. A
passion.

If you’re thinking of converting your car to electric, you’ll need to
understand some basic car maintenance, have somewhere to work on your car,
and have the necessary tools to carry out a conversion.

In the case of common conversion candidates—such as an old Volkswagen Bug or
a Ford Ranger pickup truck—you’ll be able to buy most of the components you
need from specialist vendors offering off-the-shelf conversion kits. For
more unusual or complex conversions, parts often have to be hand-made, so
metal working skills are a must.

Alternatively, it’s possible to share the work. For example, it’s possible
to send your car to the local auto shop to have major bodywork done, before
installing the electrical components yourself.

When it comes to cost, it’s possible to build your own electric car for
$10,000 or less. For decent performance and range with the latest battery
packs, motors and power electronics, you’ll be looking at spending at least
$25,000 or more.

Cottage Industry

Despite the caveats, not to mention a lack of overall warranties for things
like battery packs and drivetrains, people all over the U.S. are still
carrying out conversions, thanks to a strong online community, which even
has its own TV show.

The brainchild of Jack Rickard, proprietor of EVTV Motor Verks in Cape
Girardeau, Mo., the sometimes meandering weekly Electric Vehicle Television
show covers everything from basic conversion techniques to understanding
advanced battery chemistry. It even spawned its own annual EV conversion
convention.

As with any cottage industry, the EV conversion market is well supplied by a
dizzying array of parts suppliers. While some are aimed toward industrial
vehicles like fork lift trucks, an increasing number are specializing in
electric car conversions, offering everything from smart dashboards to
J1772-compliant chargers.

Something Unique

If you already have a vehicle in mind to electrify, and the skills to do it,
converting it yourself can be a rewarding, fun, and educational process.

Thanks to an almost unimaginable number of online websites, forums and
YouTube channels devoted to the subject, learning how to convert your own
car is easier than ever before, but be warned: it isn’t easy.

Speaking from my own experiences, I know the sense of accomplishment from
working on my own EV conversion and the joy driving it for the first time.
But I also know the pain. When things go wrong, spending hours in the
garage, working late into the night to get your car back on the road can be
mentally, physically, and financially draining.

Conversions are fun, but factory-built EVs carry the best support and
warranties.

If you want an EV that just works, never requires input from you, and is
covered by a comprehensive set of warranties, head to your local dealer and
put a deposit down on a factory-built car. Don't even think about converting
your own car.

On the other hand, if you want the challenge of building your very own
electric car and have the skills, time and resources to tackle the
project—not to mention some friends who don’t mind helping—there’s nothing
quite like driving a car you helped liberate

Did you set it the same as your other NG3? Are you sure both are
programmed the same in the first place? I had my NG3 reprogrammed for
my LiFePO4 pack and it looks the same as it did before I sent it in so
just looking at the setting won't necessarily tell you anything about
another NG3.

[EVDL] two chargers in parallel

2013-03-22 Thread a . swackhammer

Good morning,  I am going to run two Zivan NG3's in parallel.  Seems to be
pretty straight forward.  My pack is made of 60 Sky Energy, 100ahr cells.
Charger #1 is set to U1 @ 216vdc and float @ 207vdc.   I had charger  #2
programmed to U1 @ 210vdc and float @ 201vdc.  This is to get the main charge
up to 210vdc with both and let Charger #1 finish and balance.  Are there any
concerns that I should be aware?

the traction pack?? I understand it from a versatility position ( I.e. 110/220/
j1772) but do get the reason for running then at the same time??

Still learning!!!

I had six chargers in parallel on my S-10 Blazer. I have used ng3, ng5,
pfc-30, pfc-50, and more. As was already posted, when using charging in
parallel, only one charger can be un-isolated. Since ng3 chargers are
isolated, that does not pertain to you.

Assuming you are familiar with adjusting Zivan ng3 chargers and have
set yours correctly,  your posted plan to let both do the bulk
charging, where one ng3 stops at a lower set point voltage (~80%SOC?),
and the other ng3 is set to continue to finish the charge.

I do not know how to [adjust them] myself

That is why I mentioned it. Zivans have to be adjusted correctly. I have
the experience of how to do such adjustments, but I do not have the
equipment, nor the charger specific knowledge of the proper settings and
adjustment procedures to do it myself. It seems like we all have to rely
on the factory to adjust them correctly.

[EV-history - Way-back when I got my Zivans (circa ~1990's), there was
some serious dissing of them as a viable charger because some were
received with their settings wrong and their was no way to adjust them.
I knew of the Zivan distributor (at the time, Greg), and arranged an
appointment to drive up and drop by his shop in Sacramento (160+ miles
North).

I knew there was some settings that 'had to be right' or I would
cook/(under or over-charge) my PbSO4 pack when going on my long journeys
using multiple Zivan chargers (at the time, no one else was going on the
really long trips like it nor using multiple chargers in parallel
either). At the time, there really was no other off-the-shelf smart EV
charger options, so if I did not have any problems, then this charger
was still a viable option for the EV community to use (I was throwing
money and time at the issue for the EV-cause).

His shop was interesting. He had a hand-made rig that he used to adjust
the settings, and then he went through it again, for a total of three
different times, slightly adjusting each time. As a businessman he knew
that if we got this right, it would overcome the bad-rep that was being
passed around within the EV community (it would help his sales), so I am
sure you can imagine I got a little more attention than say someone that
had just shipped theirs in a box (face to face had more of an effect).
/EV-history off]

As it turned out, the chargers worked fine. The only issue was, as the
PbOS4 pack aged voltages will (and did change), but that was overcome
when the new pack was swapped in (only a few months of watching the
charging at the last part of the pack's life).

I do not have first hand li-ion pack experience. What I know about
li-ion has been taught to me by evdl member's and their experiences.
(Corrections requested) from what I have gathered, li-ion pack aging
will not be as a serious problem for you as it would be if you were
using the PbSO4 pack chemistry.

According to your EValbum page
http://www.evalbum.com/2430
You are in Edmonds, WA which has similar temperatures to the San
Francisco area (Seattle has a large body of water to keep temperatures
pleasant). But if you plan to go exploring in areas that have serious
temperature changes, I suggest you have some thermal management for your
pack (insulate and heat it when it is cold, and keep it cool when it is
hot).

A lot has changed since those old-days. I am reading on the evdl that
drivers that receive their chargers back from being adjusted, have had
no problems. But if I were in your shoes/situation, since the adjustment
work was not my own, I would recommend that you initially monitor your
chargers, so that you know they really do what you asked Zivan to adjust
for (that they shut down / off at the correct voltages). You always have
to factor in human error, and double check to know all is right/well.
