I'd recommend Particle Fever although it might be old hat to some on this
forum.

Also The Congress based on The Futurological Congress by Stanislaw Lem,
I would say is worth watching, although probably not to everyone's tastes.
But probably to the tastes of most people on this forum!

*!!! SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE THE 13TH FLOOR AND SHORT STORY THE TUNNEL
UNDER THE WORLD BY FRED POHL !!!*

We have just watched The Thirteenth Floor :)

Wow!

...And I just discovered that the original book was written in *1964!*

Wow!!!

Thank you so much for recommending that, it was great.

(Of course when it ended I was thinking - Just stay put. Don't ever go too
far from home!)

Makes The Matrix look a bit passe.

Surely that was the first description of a virtual reality as such? (As
opposed to a world that existed as some sort of psychic or supernatural
illusion, as in various stories by Lovecraft, Hodgson, H G Wells etc.)

(The Tunnel Under the World by Frederick Pohl is earlier but in that the
people turn out to all be miniature robots.)

PS we watched Inception a little while ago - it was quite nicely
structured but somehow lacking humanity, I thought.

Yes, I enjoyed Inception but not as much as I thought I would, it's not
nearly as good as The Thirteenth Floor or Christopher Nolan's other movie
The Prestige. And if you liked those movies you'll probably like the 1998
movie Dark City.

Yes; and that is why the first person discourses differentiates

No one questions that.

Glad to hear that! You can move to step 4.

However, that an individual could anticipate both surviving and
drowning, and anticipate the certainty of both experiences in a
duplication context doesn't even approach logical impossibilty.

Exactly, in the 3-1 view. You talk about your (future) self from
outside, gently assuming the 1p consciousness to both. That is useful
to define the domain of the indeterminacy indeed, but is not related
to the experience effectively lived by any experiencers resulting from

In this instance, he will anticipate both.

Sure, excellent strategy, given that he will live with certainty only
one of that both. He will not anticipate living both at once in

I think we agree so, what about step 4?

The Groundhog Day may be also of interest for someone of you. The UDA
run wild in this film where a local semi-robust loop in time forces
the protagonist to do things like killing himself or mastering Rock
Roll piano.

Can loops in time produce personal duplications? In this case we
would have a teleportation machine and a time machine for the same
price. The thesis of this interesting film is NO. But of course this
must be possible according with scence, because any naturalistic TOE

Seconded. One could I suppose put the posts in small faint letters to make them
less noticeable, but I can't see any SPOILER tags on this forum!

Well The Prestige is a film about obsession and the lengths people go to meet
them. Its not about the UDA.

It does contain a teleport machine in it and the naughty magician keeps
duplicating himself and killing off one of the duplicates.

At one point, when arguing about what sacrifices he has made for his art, he
points out that every night he is in a state of horror because he doesn't know
whether he will end up at the back of the stage or drowning in the vat.
ofcourse, he is just in a state of denial because he ought to know precisely
what he will experience: survival to the prestige AND drowning. Its not as if
there could be any doubt about it. The set up makes both experiences certain.
But its not really a flaw in script, because the audience sees it clearly. Its
why its such a macabre ending. Here is man so obsessed with bettering his rival
that he reduces his life to a living hell drowning himself every night. The
goody magician's sacrifices are bad enough, losing a finger, losing a wife,
losing a brother. But the naughty magicians sacrifices are deliberate and
knowing self annihilation and its this that makes his story so horrifically
tragic.

You might find it on Youtube, but in my country it is no more
accessible for reason of copyright.

Don't expect any explicit comp like thought experiences like in
prestige, nor simulation like in simulacron 3 or matrix, the
metaphysics is deeper, and the whole movie seems to me to be an
incredible allegory of the salvia experience. I like also the fact
that it is in all appearance just a funny comedy, around the theme of
death.

Oh, I found it here:

http://watch32.com/movies-online/hello-ghost-3066

Very good quality, but I think they will ask money, perhaps before the
end of the movie. I hope not.

You have to look at the movie twice, to really got the thing, also,

Also, you should watch the entirety of Jonathan Creek (except perhaps for
the last few episodes, in which the writer appears to have gone slightly
off the rails unfortunately). But certainly the first few series' are well
worth watching. It's like David Renwick's a (far more prolific)
reincarnation of Clayton Rawson.

 (not Galouze!)

and Stalker are also pretty stunning if you can handle 10 minute shots of
dripping water and general Russian misery etc.

After the prestige, that was rather disappointing, for me.

My favorite movie is the thirteenth floor, or the corresponding novel

According to some people, MATRIX is full of allusion to conscience

I liked BSG, but don't think I ever finished the series. It got kind of
soapy and long but I would revisit it.

I liked Moon a lot. The old Lathe of Heaven I remember as cool. Recently I
just watched Blade Runner for the first time since it came out - still
impressive on Blue Ray and more philosophy of mind themes than I remembered.

I think I may have seen '2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY' about 30 times by now.
Actually, I can lie on a couch and simply play the entire film in my head - I
don't even need to hire the disc! The music helps of course, because Kubrick's
matching of great classical pieces to tech wizardry and the whole
Sentinel/Monolith Ligeti 'Atmospheres' voice of this thing just blows my mind
to smithereens. To actually suggest that the Engineer contacts us via a stone
block that sings music is a concept that I rather find somewhat compelling

But Arthur C Clarke probably gets equal credit...

Re: Films I think people on this forum might like

2014-02-03 Thread Jesse Mazer
Good suggestions. 12 Monkeys is also a good depiction of time travel in a
block universe--and for a comedy take, the Bill Ted movies fit together
perfectly with block time as well! (as long as you take for granted that
the historical figures they bring along never spoke publicly about their
trips through time, and that the character who's trying to change history
in the second one is just ignorant of how time travel really works)

One that also might be of interest is a science fiction movie called Mr.
Nobody that seems to blend together a number of ideas discussed on this
list--the multiverse, the Gold universe where the arrow of time reverses
when the universe contracts, and perhaps also the idea of reality as a
simulation (the ending is kind of ambiguous). Of course there have also
been a number of movies which revolve around the reality-as-simulation idea
(The Matrix, The 13th Floor, eXistenZ) but one of the most interesting ones
in terms of the ideas it plays around with is World on a Wire from 1973,
made for German TV by the director Werner Fassbinder.

Adjustment Bureau
Inception
Open Your Eyes (Spanish language, with subtitles).

These are mainly virtual reality type movies.

I'm going to add some of the others mentioned to my DVD service queue.

Cheers

 Liz,

Great recommendations, and excellent topic idea.

The Prestige is the movie that got me interested in these topics and led me
to this list. Also, for US viewers, Chronochrimes goes by Timecrimes and
is available under netflix under that title. I found it to be the first
realistic portrayal of single-universe time travel in any movie I have seen.

Somewhat off-topic being a TV series, but the recently reimagined
Battlestar Galactica probes many of the questions of machine vs. human
consciousness. I recommend it to Craig.

One I've mentioned ad nauseum - Memento.

There is also The Prestige, which I would definitely recommend.

To avoid spoilers, I won't go into detail about why these films might
appeal, but they both address issues mentioned on this list (at least
tangentially, and in a fictional manner).

I might also mention Chronocrimes for its portrayal of a block univese.

Sadly no one seems to have filmed October the First is Too Late although
the 10-episode epic Doctor Who story The War Games comes close in some
respects. In fact I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Who story was
inspired by Hoyle's novel, which I think appeared about 3 years beforehand
if I remember correctly. I would semi-recommend this (but you have to
remember that it was made in black and white, for viewing as a weekly
  serial in 1969...)
