RE: Backup Hardware
That disk you're taking home with you provides the redundancy in your RAID5 system. Think about what would happen if one of the remaining disks failed! And I'd like to see you try to recover data from one disk in a RAID5 array! RE: OOA questions
Ok so a 3rd party tool is needed. 1- Maybe it's easy, but it's not a very efficient method. But thanks, I'll check those sites. 2- OWA would work best when user is away and has no access to his/her computer. Maybe I'm wrong but doesn't turning off the auto-replies disables generating auto-reply and not the Out-of-Office messages and only to the Internet? Heck, I'm 9 months pregnant, and, apparently I've lost my mind. I guess Chris is right and I'm wrong. My bad. I got a pop-up window telling me, quite explicity, that one DL cannot own another. It then suggested that I select another account. It may have suggested a mailbox, but I can't be sure. I was too busy pounding the desk in triumph. It was bittersweet, though. I really did want it to work. So, how do you make it work, Missy? I'm also interested in how to make a DL the owner of a mailbox. I didn't think that was possible, either. I think I've got the one-to-one thing sorted out, but I'll check that, too. - Original Message - From: Missy Koslosky [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Exchange Discussions [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, September 16, 2002 5:54 AM Subject: Re: Multiple updaters for a DL It is indeed a migration issue. It's dealt with by going through the 5.5 directory and identifying mailboxes that are owned by DL's and reassigning them to *unique* accounts. (Remember that there is a one-to-one association between AD accounts mailboxes in E2K, so no account can be the primary NT account for 1 mailbox.) Either that, or I've imagined the whole thing. So, first thing in the morning, I'm gonna have another whack at it. On a related note, Missy's second statement about E2K has me somewhat concerned (only somewhat, because I'm the calm, cool, collected type). Event 1029
We are starting to move our MSX5.5 mailboxes to an E2K server. Oddly, we are seeing eventlog warnings (not the old event 1016) whenever someone other than the owner accesses the calendar of someone who's mailbox is on the E2K server. The eventlog entry claims the operation failed, but users are able to view the calendar just fine. IIRC, turning off auto-replies to the internet kills both to the internet. You are correct that it would have no effect internally. Harvey1 was probably given delegate permissions to harveye's mailbox. Log on to Harveye's mailbox, right click on the calendar and select permissions. PerlMX ??? ok for your desktop and small setups I guess, but if you are serious about performance etc. then you need to use Sendmail's in-built (if you build it to use this feature that is) MILTER (if you think of smtp event sinks in Exchange 2000 then its _sort_ of the same thing) and then the MILTER filter has to be written in c . anything else is a poor second. Of course this is all free, but you have to know what you are doing ..and it isnt related to Exchange at all so its off topic! more on topic for this sort of stuff is what you can get at e-nspect.co.uk or com which doesnt use the Exchange server log files to generate reports so it can grab more data about attachments etc. unlike Promodag. mike _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Public Folder Migration Problems
All, I'm trying to migrate public folders from my 5.5 server to my E2K server. I'm doing this through the Exchange 5.5 Admin. Removing the home server from the replicas and adding the E2K server so that forces it to make the E2K server the new home server. When I do attemp this by hitting apply I get the error message that pops up: There is no consistency between directories. On the DSA General property page, choose check knowledge consistency. Now I can't find a DSA General page. But I did find on the 5.5 (that houses the public folders) on the advanced tab a Consistency adjuster. Is that what it's referring to? When I hit cancel and re-open the property page for that public folder it tells me that the home server is now the E2k server. But how is that when it's giving me an error when trying to move the public folder to it's new home server? Anyone encounter this problem before? Please help. RE: Mailbox monitoring
PerlMX ??? ok for your desktop and small setups I guess, but if you are serious about performance etc. then you need to use Sendmail's in-built (if you build it to use this feature that is) MILTER (if you think of smtp event sinks in Exchange 2000 then its _sort_ of the same thing) and then the MILTER filter has to be written in c . anything else is a poor second. Of course this is all free, but you have to know what you are doing ..and it isnt related to Exchange at all so its off topic! more on topic for this sort of stuff is www.e-nspect.co.uk which doesnt use the Exchange server log files to generate reports so it can grab more data about attachments etc. unlike Promodag.. mike _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

One important note however - if you received a special hotfix on top of a certain service pack (say SP2) close to the time before the next SP was released (SP3), that hotfix isn't guaranteed to be in the next SP (SP3 in this case). You should check with the PSS engineer who gave you the hotfix to verify this. Deleting Internet Newsgroups
Hi List, apologies if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find anything in the archive. Here's the problem: A newsfeed was set up in Exchange 2000 with the default configuration, feeding from all newsgroups (*). Exchange d'loaded all group folders and set up the folder structure in the public folders, before I could cancel the process. How can I delete all of them folders at once? In the Exchange administrator console i can only delete them toplevel folder by toplevel folder, and .alt cannot be deleted at all (due to its massive size i suppose). Any help appreciated. RE: Any experience with GFI Mail Security?
I've been using Mail Essentials on a gateway machine for a couple of years and have been pretty happy with it. Between the attachment blocking and virus checking, it does an excellent job of stopping viruses (I'm still using the last version before they split it into two on the gateway). It also reduces the amount of spam that gets through with a little tweaking of the content filter. One thing I don't like is that it sends a copy of every virus it catches to the mailbox of the person designated to process the quarantine. Not exactly safe if you ask me. Since GFI released Mail Security while I was still under maintenance for Mail Essentials, I got to upgrade to it for free. I've been using it on the Exchange Server in VSAPI mode for about 6 months and it also does an excellent job of keeping the server virus free (including quarantining the notice messages from Mail Essentials :-)). I do have a problem with the way it quarantines things though -- when you release an item that was an attachment from quarantine in Mail Security, it just disappears. You have to manually save the attachment and then email it to the intended recipient. I don't know whether this is a VSAPI thing or if Mail Security is not handling it correctly or if I am just doing something wrong. The few times I have contacted GFI for support, they have been fairly quick to respond and their answers have been pretty accurate. Make sure you contact them about educational pricing, they offer some pretty good educational discounts. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to email me directly.
