Hi Don:

You could go with a list-server solution, I believe there are several
shareware options of this variety. The problem is that these lists will
all be handled outside of Exchange. If you interacting with any of
these friends for day to day business correspondence they will need to
be duplicated in your GAL.

Imanami makes several applications that help manage Exchange based DL's.
Imanami WebDir provides an Exchange based list-server that allows users
to subscribe and un-subscribe to lists. Imanami SmartDL alls you to
automate Exchange DL's based on queries of your GAL directory attributes
or data in external data systems.

Check out www.imanami.com

We have over 7,000 e-mail addresses of friends of the Museum where I am
employed. We currently pay a lot to have someone do the blast e-mailing
of our newsletter.

What alternatives would I have? We currently run 5.5 over Win2K and
distribution lists only send about 150 or so and need to be manually
updated. Are there any better options that anyone is aware of?

Exchange 2000 ADC Install troubles

2003-07-15 Thread Foerst, Daniel P.
Hey all,

I am setting up a development environment to test our migration scenario
from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000 but ran into a snag.
In my development environment I have a Domain Controller that was built
and added to our production domain in order to have a recent
list of user accounts, groups, etc. This Domain Controller was then
removed from the production area and added to the Developement
environment
where I needed to Seize the FSMO roles for the development domain. (The
production domain has all the appropriate roles). When I attempt
to install the ADC provided by our Exchange 2000 CD I eventually receive
an error stating that the account that I am running the ADC setup.exe
from does not have the sufficient rights to modify/upgrade the schema.
(I don't have the exact error in front of me). This doesn't make sense
because I am launching the ADC Setup from
the Domain Administrator account, which I verified is part of the Domain
Admins group, which is part of the builtin/Administrators group, it is
part of the Enterprise Admins group, and the Schema Admins group. I even
went as far to make another account with duplicte memberships thinking
that the ADC had issues with the Domain Administrator account, but even
that failed. I have verified that this DOmain Controller is indeed
running all 5 FSMO roles and is a Global Catalog (the only domain
controller in the development domain) . Can anyone point me in the right
direction?

Windows 2000 Server
Service Pack 3 w/latest patches
1.8GHz server (speed shouldn't be an issue)
512MB memory
Exchange 2000 ADC

Thanks!

Mass personal contact addition

2003-07-15 Thread Krishna
Hi all,

Can anyone tell me how contacts can be added to a users contacts folder on
exchange 2000 server. I need to automate addition of multiple contacts
using VB. Can a have a VB component on a webserver(different from my
exchange server) which does the mass addition of contacts to our users
mail boxes. This is basically to enable our users to import contacts to
their contacts folder on exchange server from other sources. The user
submits his request for importing contats on the webserver and then the
component should be able to add contacts to his folder on exchange server
in the same domain. Please help me. This is urgent.

Thanks,
Krishna

RE: Exchange 2000 ADC Install troubles

2003-07-15 Thread knighTslayer
I've seen this many times.

The DC needs to be allowed to update the schema. Basically, you need to
modify the NTDS to allow it modify the scema.

Check this out:

Let us know if it works

Mail-enabled public folders

2003-07-15 Thread Gray
We have Exchange 2000 running in native mode and are using Public Folders
for various functions. I need to mail backup alerts (internaly) to a
Public Folder in the default Public Folder tree, but the Folder has no
e-mail address. When you right click the folder in Exchange System manager
and select All tasks there is no Mail Enable/Disable option displayed.
Am I missing something? Can someone tell me how to mail-enable the Public
Folder so its visable in the GAL.

Norbu (your real name ?) :)

telnet to the mailserver on port 110
When it says POP3 server ready stuff, enter user YourUserName
 pass YourPassword list

(Needless to say replace YourUserName and YourPasword with your actual
 data)

See how far you get - if it lists a lot you should have no
problem from outlook unless your pst file is very large
(2GB) or you have thousands of mails in your mailbox and
activated 'leave messages on the server'.
Then it can hang like this

RE: What alternatives exist for mass e-mailings?

2003-07-15 Thread Fyodorov, Andrey
Last time I looked at Redd-Fish (back in 1998) it had some loopholes in
it. For example one list member could unsubscribe another list member
without that person's knowing about it.

But maybe they have fixed those by now.

A product that we looked into some time ago was Redd-Fish.
(http://www.reddfish.co.nz/). We have not implemented it yet but
maybe doing so within the next 2-3 months.

Sorry not too much feedback other than a resource :)

I wouldn't worry too much about it, unless volumes increase to thousands
per day:-) You should get copies of mail delivery attempts in your
administrator box. You can see which users don't or no longer exist on
your system.

Originator means it's an NDR. Are you seeing a lot of activity? Mail
relay? Virus spoofing attack perhaps?

We have Exchange 2000 running in native mode and are using Public Folders
for various functions. I need to mail backup alerts (internaly) to a
Public Folder in the default Public Folder tree, but the Folder has no
e-mail address. When you right click the folder in Exchange System manager
and select All tasks there is no Mail Enable/Disable option displayed.
Am I missing something? Can someone tell me how to mail-enable the Public
Folder so its visable in the GAL.

Thats actually about when we started looking into it as well (98 - 99).

Yes, according to redd-fish those and many others have been fixed (kinda makes you
wonder doesnt it?). I guess all i can do is hope that it all works correctly in my
labotherwise its back to square one :)

Another product that a friend of mine mentioned, although in no way is it big-league
is post master express...http://www.post-master.net/rs/Index/. It supposedly has the
abitly to have subscribe/unsubcribe and schedule mailings...although it does not sit
on nor intergrate with Ex.

Last time I looked at Redd-Fish (back in 1998) it had some loopholes in
it. For example one list member could unsubscribe another list member
without that person's knowing about it.

But maybe they have fixed those by now.

We have never ever used public folders since we first started on
Exchange/Outlook. How difficult would it be to roll this functionality out
to a few people at a time?

Thanks for any and all input.

It shouldn't be too hard. The main issue as I have experienced it is to
make sure you don't give everyone the permission to create Top Level

To get a good estimate, look at your Event logs after Nightly online
maintenance has run. You should see an event number 1221 for each of
your Stores indicating how much free space is in the database after
online defragmentation has completed. This figure is your White Space,
and is a general indication of how much space you might be able to
regain with an offline defrag (eseutil).

RE: eseutil defrag inconsistency

2003-07-15 Thread Ben Winzenz
I believe that the online defrag only reports free space, not partially
used space. There is a setting on the server to Zero out Deleted
Database Pages. This would likely help the Online defrag to report a
better representation of the number. Be aware though that turning that
on will have a performance hit on your server, as it will be working
harder.

Sell the SQL box eBay.
Use the proceeds to buy two new servers that are more appropriately sized to

I doubt you'll have any performance issues, but you will at some point
encounter downtime issues. In addition, you will be complicating your
environment buy having two very complex services on one machine. It could
make troubleshooting more difficult.

why else is this a bad idea? Thanks in advance, Scott.

NDRs received state the following:

Deliver to the following recipient has been delayed.

The NDR is received days after being sent.

I've verified that I can send to the other company from an account
outside of our domain (hotmail for example)

The message header received from the other company when sending mail to
us looks as follows:

[SNIP]
Received: from exbdc01.kpafilms.com
mail.kpafilms.com[12.155.200.200](misconfigured sender))
[SNIP]
www.dnsreport.com shows that the domain has 2 MX records and the primary
is unreachable.

[SNIP]
10 mail.kpafilms.com.
5 mi.kpafilms.com.

ERROR: I could not connect to one or more of your mailservers:
mi.kpafilms.com: Timed out [Last data sent: QUIT ]

Question:

Is there anything I can do on my end to allow this mail to go through?
I suspect that something has changed on the other company's end because
until the 25th of June, we had no problems sending to them.

Thanks,

Casey

RE: misconfigured sender

2003-07-15 Thread Dickenson, Steven
For some reason, it would appear that your mail server is delaying the
message, instead of trying the next highest MX record. Having two MX
records, with the first being unavailable, is common practice (at least in
the *nix world), where the higher-level MX is an SMTP gateway.

Unfortunately, I can't tell you how to fix this, I'm still on Ex5.5.

exmerge

2003-07-15 Thread by

Dear all,

So far all the articles I have read about exmerge is, it requires
Exchange service account logon to perform the task.

I am trying to setup a standard procedure that desktop support staff can
learn using exmerge for archiving mailbox data to PST before deleting
the exchange mailbox accounts. As I am avoiding informing them the
password of exchange service account if possible, can somebody advise
how to handle the situation?

Thank you.

ExMerge really only requires User rights to the mailbox it is trying to
access. Service Account Admin rights conveys that on all mailboxes within
the site.

Since ExMerge can be destructive, I suggest limiting its use to those
qualified to handle it.

I was using Konquerer at the time... I have subsequently gotten to it, though I
think using these browser tests is in bad form, especially when one is not just urged
to use another type, but forbidden from seeing the home page (Actually if I hit the
stop button soon enough to prevent the browser check script from executing, I can see
it).

Just wanted to mention it, as it might be putting off potential customers, I am no
zealot in respects to OS's I use, I use whatever seems most appropriate to the task at
hand. It is no big deal, just a bit annoying.

RE: misconfigured sender

2003-07-15 Thread Roger Seielstad
Seeing as Casey has butchered the NDR's its nearly impossible to tell what's
actually happening.

However, its not *completely* impossible. penncolor.com *is* delivering the
mail, and the reject is coming from their end:

 Received: from exbdc01.kpafilms.com
 mail.kpafilms.com[12.155.200.200](misconfigured sender))

Their Exchange (I presume) server (exbdc01.kpafilms.com) is rejecting the
mail from their mail relay (mail.kpafilms.com), as is clearly spelled out by
this slice of NDR.

And, in this case, the fix is the same for Ex 5.5 and for E2k - beat the

it mean they get an NDR which says Can't send to that user because they

ExMerge really only requires User rights to the mailbox it is trying to
access. Service Account Admin rights conveys that on all mailboxes
within
the site.

Since ExMerge can be destructive, I suggest limiting its use to those
qualified to handle it.

RE: exmerge

2003-07-15 Thread Fyodorov, Andrey
Create a batch file that would use ExMerge. When ExMerge runs in batch
mode, it reads the names of mailboxes to be exported from a text file,
and I also uses an INI file to figured out which text file to use. So
preconfigure the INI file.

Use windows Task Scheduler and schedule the batch file to run. When you
schedule it, you will be asked to supply username and password - stick
the service account credentials in there.

When someone needs to export mailboxes, they could modify the text file
that has a list of mailboxes, then go to the Scheduled Tasks,
right-click on the ExMerge job and run it.
(or if they want to use a different text file altogether, they could
even modify the INI file to point to the other text tile)

Their Exchange (I presume) server (exbdc01.kpafilms.com) is rejecting

 Subject: misconfigured sender

 Greetings,

 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
 Server is E2K
 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

My company is having problems sending mail to another company (simply
 put)

 NDRs received state the following:

Deliver to the following recipient has been delayed.

The NDR is received days after being sent.

I've verified that I can send to the other company from an account
outside of our domain (hotmail for example)

The message header received from the other company when
 sending mail to
 us looks as follows:

 [SNIP]
 Received: from exbdc01.kpafilms.com
 mail.kpafilms.com[12.155.200.200](misconfigured sender)) [SNIP]
www.dnsreport.com shows that the domain has 2 MX records and
 the primary
 is unreachable.

 [SNIP]
 10 mail.kpafilms.com.
 5 mi.kpafilms.com.

ERROR: I could not connect to one or more of your mailservers:
mi.kpafilms.com: Timed out [Last data sent: QUIT ]
 [SNIP]

 Question:

Is there anything I can do on my end to allow this mail to go through?

I suspect that something has changed on the other company's end
because until the 25th of June, we had no problems sending to them.

 Thanks,

 Casey

There's generally at least a little more information on the NDR than you're
getting. Any way you cut it, however, the issue is there end, not yours.

Sorry Roger if I butchered the NDR...here's exactly what it says (very
 unimformative)
I guess it would be more approiate to call it a Dilvery
 delayed report,
we never receive and actual NDR and the recipient never receives the
 message.

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

THIS IS A WARNING MESSAGE ONLY.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESEND YOUR MESSAGE.

Delivery to the following recipients has been delayed.

Seeing as Casey has butchered the NDR's its nearly impossible to tell
 what's actually happening.

However, its not *completely* impossible. penncolor.com *is*
 delivering
the mail, and the reject is coming from their end:

  Received: from exbdc01.kpafilms.com
  mail.kpafilms.com[12.155.200.200](misconfigured sender))

Their Exchange (I presume) server (exbdc01.kpafilms.com) is rejecting
the mail from their mail relay (mail.kpafilms.com), as is clearly
spelled out by this slice of NDR.

And, in this case, the fix is the same for Ex 5.5 and for E2k
 - beat the
foreign postmaster about the head and shoulders with a 2x4 until they
 fix their mail issues.

For some reason, it would appear that your mail server is
 delaying the

message, instead of trying the next highest MX record.
 Having two MX
records, with the first being unavailable, is common practice (at
least in the *nix world), where the higher-level MX is an SMTP
  gateway.

Unfortunately, I can't tell you how to fix this, I'm still on Ex5.5.

Creating a permanent folder in outlook/exchange

2003-07-15 Thread Kevin Adams
Greetings,

I have a need for a permanent folder in Outlook, enterprise wide. A
folder that users cannot delete. Can anyone tell me if there is a way to
do this?

Thanks!

Exchange 2k Domain Controllers

2003-07-15 Thread Doug Schaible

I have an Exchange 2000 Server that also happens to be a domain
controller. At one time this was required because this site only had two
servers and we needed a backup domain controller. Now the site has
additional servers and there's no need for Exchange to sit on domain
controller, besides this isn't the most preferable configuration.

Does anyone know of a way of removing the domain controller attributes
from the box without destroying the entire setup and rebuilding from
scratch? I'd like to retain the server name if possible.

The server is running Windows 2000 SP3 and is a domain controller in our
domain which is running in native mode. It's also running Exchange 2000
SP3 and Post SP3 Security rollup package, also running in Exchange's
native mode.

Thanks in advance!

Contacts not resolving

2003-07-15 Thread John Parker
Hey all...

When creating a new email, if I type an alias from a user in the GAL, it will resolve
to the alias I have created for the user in the GAL. Any names in the GAL will
resolve just fine, but when typing an alias in from the contacts folder, the names
will not resolve. It used to work fine under 5.5 but since moving to exchange 2K, it
does not.

Show in address book is checked in the contact properties.

Any ideas as to why this is?

A benchmark if you have time...

2003-07-15 Thread Edgington, Jeff
I know this subject has been brought up before (and yes, I've looked
through the archives), but I'm looking for a little more detail.

Our current exchange environment is as follows:

- 9600 mailboxes (spread evenly over the servers)
- most quotas are 50/55/65 (warn/prohibit send/prohibit send/receive)
with about 5 percent exceeding this (some upwards of 600MB)
- 3 Protocol servers (running NLB)
- 1GHz w/ 1GB RAM
- 6 Mailbox Servers (in-house built)
- Dual PIII 866
- 2GB RAM
- 3Ware 7000-8 IDE RAID Controller (7200 rpm drives, 3 mirrors -
OS/TLOGS/Store - 1 hot spare)
- 1Gbit NIC
- 1 Standby Mailbox Server (empty) that is same as above configuration.

This is an _OK_ configuration... it's been stable, but lacks some speed
(disk queue lengths on the storage mirrors will reach 80+ at times and I
can correlate the 'waiting on server' message with these queue
lengths)... the advantage of the multiple servers is that if an outage
occurs, it affects only 1/6th of the people... we are looking at
purchasing a SCSI disk subsystem for the current servers and are also
going as far as looking at purchasing name-brand servers with a SAN. I
have been able to test (using HD Tach 2.61) 10,000 rpm SCSI drives, 7200
rpm SCSI drives, 7200 PATA IDE drive.. I'm waiting on a SATA drive
(already have a controller)... so far all have performed very close to
each other... it's not clear to me that the test I'm using is giving me
information that I can use to base my decision on.

What I'm looking for is what are others with similar mailbox
environments using?. What do you like about your config? What do you
wish you could change? If you are using a SAN, which brand/model?

Thanks for your time!

RE: 5.5 DR

2003-07-15 Thread The Geek Q
List -

For all of you out there still running 5.5.
I was wondering what you have for DR plans and how you like them?
Just looking for a high level explanation.
I have the option of adding a DR site and was wondering what would be the
most favorable design for duplicating mail/mailboxes to another physical
site.
For cases of extreme failures, like a 100% loss of 1 site.

Re: Store.exe memory leak

2003-07-15 Thread Missy Koslosky
The store is designed to use DBA, which will consume all of the memory
available.

What's in your event logs when the IMS shuts down?

Subject: Store.exe memory leak

Help, I am running Exchange 5.5 SP4 with 2 gigs of memory for 500 users on
a NT Domain . The Store.exe has a memory leak which Consumes all available
memory and stops the Internet Mail Connector.
I have run the Optimizer to limit the Store which did not help.
Thanks for the help...
