SP 4 problems

2002-08-30 Thread Mike Omilian

While upgrading to sp4 (Exchange 5.5), I got the following error:

The specified service is disabled and cannot be started:
Microsoft Windows NT
ID no:0xc0020422

When I go into Exch Admin I get the following error:
Extension SMTP could not be loaded. An error occured during file
replication. Unable to find the extension .dll file with the correct
version number. . .

The event log says The file version of
c:\exchsrvr\add-ins\smtp\i386\imcadmin.dll installed on the local server
is not current. Looking at servers in servers in the site for a current
version.

Can I restore that dll from a backup or is there more to the problem?

Store.exe and NT backup

2002-07-12 Thread Mike Omilian

Our store.exe is running at 100%. I know this is normal that NT is
supposed to take the resources from that as it needs it.

But for the past 3 weeks, it is now taking over 10 hours for the backup of
the exchange server when it used to be done in about 3.

The priv.edb is only 565M and the pub.edb is 21 M. The backup is only
backing up about 4.5G in total (user directories).

Response time in Outlook 2000 is not slow.
The queues are not backing up.
Trend Serverprotect is running on that server, but the exchange
directories are being skipped.
Nothing new has been added or removed from the server.
There is no delay when stopping or starting the information store.
No errors (Dr. Watson) have happened and it has not not responded.
Nothing out of the ordinary in the event logs

Nt server 4.0 sp6a
Exchange 5.5 sp3
NTbackup using AT command for backup with the following .bat file:

ntbackup backup c: e: ds \\server1 is \\server1 /v /b /e /l
c:\backup\backup.log /hc:on /t normal

I have also started receiving about 80-100 blank e-mails with no body and
no subject starting at the time the backup starts

Trend server protect - file-based with the all exchange directories being
skipped. Mail Essentials is on the server also with it's
anti-virus/content checking protection. Haven't any problems with that in
the 3 years it's been on.

What antivirus product are you running? File-based or Exchange-aware?

RE: Store.exe and NT backup

2002-07-12 Thread Mike Omilian

(a) On the Task Manager - CPU is 100%.
(b) The physical memory is as follows:
Total 392Mb
Avail 110-112Mb
File Cache 26Mb
(c) Stopping and starting helps, but then it creeps right back up to 100%
(d) Exchange 5.5 sp3 and post 6a security rollup.

 a) STORE.EXE at 100% CPU is not normal. Typical values for a well used
system would be 30 to 50% CPU.
 b) STORE.EXE can take close to 100% of memory without a worry - but NOT CPU.
 c) Stop and start the Information Store if you like - it sounds as though it
wouldn't do any harm and may do some good. But NOT when the backups are
 running.
 d) What version of Exchange, what Service Packs and what hot fixes are you
 running?

 Cheers, Chris

RE: Store.exe and NT backup

Haven't tried to disable them both yet - I can only imagine the crap my
users will open now!

Nothing interesting in the event logs for NT backup and Exchange, but I
just did notice an error for the Jet database:
Event ID: 0
Source: Jet
Type: error
Category: (4)

The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( JET ) could not be found.
It contains the following insertion string(s): , (918) , Unexpected Win32
error: 0x10B.

but I looked on EventID and others but couldn't find anything on this.

What happens if you disable both of them?
Also, Anything interesting in the event logs?

RE: Store.exe and NT backup

2002-07-12 Thread Mike Omilian

Correct. I haven't made any changes, run any utilities or added/deleted
any programs.

One morning, I tried to eject the tape after a backup and nothing would
happen. I logged onto the server and the backup was still running. I
thought that was odd because it about 12 hours after the backup had
started. There was nothing in the event logs and nothing stood out of the
ordinary. No one else has access to the server but myself.

And you havent made any changes or run any Exchange utilities on the
 database recently?
This just started all of a sudden?

OT Upgrade question

We're a smaller
company(
40 users) and we currently run NT 4.0 and Exchange 5.5. Both run great and have been

My question is how do you approach upper management asking to upgrade to
Windows and Exchange 2000 when they have the if it ain't broke, don't fix
it mentality? I've already tried the additional functionality route,
but they're not buying it.

RE: OT Upgrade question

2002-05-21 Thread Mike Omilian

Bonus? Yeah, right. Our salary people had to take a 10% paycut that was
only supposed to be for 1 month. Well, 4 months later that cut is still
here.

If its not broke you don't need support so who cares if support is
 available?

Eventually the increased functionality may be of value to the higher
 ups,
after one of them hears about some great thing from a buddy on the golf
course, etc. Address it then. Meanwhile, show them how much money you've
saved them by not upgrading and ask for a portion of those savings as a
 bonus.

Re: Virus anyone?

2001-10-02 Thread Mike Omilian

Sometimes, if my curiosity is killing me, I'll copy the exe to a disk and
then put it on a test machine that I have that's not hooked up to the
network (not even a NIC in it) and fire it off there. If it does any
damage, there's nothing lost but now you have the knowledge without having
to do the recovery.

Mike

Has anyone else received an email like the one below? The attachment
was start.exe. Fortunately, we are blocking all executables. I can't
find any reference on Trend's or Symantec's website, but it seems a
little fishy that a former CIA office would be sending his resume as an
 executable to a clothing manufacturer

RE: Sircam Virus

2001-10-01 Thread Mike Omilian

We use Mail Essentail for Exchange 5.5. I haven't had any problems with
it, the a/v goes out and ftp's the latest viurs definitions at some off
hour and sends me the notice. It can block atachments and will also scan
attachments for macros and clean/quarantine them. You can also set it up
for anti-spam.

Mike

On that thought - Is anyone here using mailEssentials?

We are still getting pounded with Sircam also and are considering using =

mailEssentials on our win2k smtp server in the dmz to filter mail =

getting to Antigen on our smtp connector. The goal is to better filter =

Re: Nimda

2001-09-20 Thread Mike Omilian

I got nailed too. Not from an e-mail - I currently block all exe's. We
must have gotten it from an infected web page. I already applied the
patch for Code Red last month but my problem is a little bigger:

I can't log onto the server without getting a Dr Watson error for
explorer.exe. The server runs ok, but after I log on and the desktop
comes up it generates the error. I can't even got on long enough to run
anything. I did get the patch applied for the Transversal vulnerability,
but I'm not sure if that helped. Now our network seems to be slowing down
and people are having printing troubles too. Some people can't get their
Outlook open - not enough system resources. . . We're all up to date
with Virus software for Nimda, but the .eml files are still being created
- but not on every machine. Wierd. How do you find the machine that's
affecting the rest of the network? What virus software is everyone using
for their NT servers (not for Exchange, but NT)? Any help would be
GREATLY appreciated.

Dr. Watson (was New Virus / Worm??)

2001-09-19 Thread Mike Omilian

On my Exchange box, when I try to log on, I keep getting Dr. Watson error
that says the following:

Explorer.exe
Exception Access Violation (0xc005), Address:0x77f7d18e

Everytime I close that down, another one pops up in about 5 seconds.
There isn't even enough time to open the Run command to run a latest
patch. The patch for Code Red was installed last month, but I can't get
on to the server to install the latest one. Any ideas? This started
yesterday when the nimda virus came through.

Has anyone figured out hoe to stop the creation of *.eml files on the
network too?
