You can use a tool like LDIFDE to import group memberships, or you can
script it. Neither is trivial.

Subject: Active Directory type tools for NT 4

We are in the process of creating multiple groups to assign printers to. In
the past at my last job we had the luxury of AD and using an Excel
spreadsheet's to copy the names from the cell's and doing a check to
resolve. I am looking for something in NT 4 usrmgr that can do something
similar. Anyone have any ideas? It doesn't have to be exactly the same but
something so we don't have to pick names 1 at a time because these groups
are very large.

HI Everyone,

We are running Ad in our environment with Exchange 2000. We have 2 AD
servers in the same site and only 1 server has all FSMO roles (we havent
gotten a chance to move them yet).

For some reason when one of our DC's failed (the one with all the FSMO
roles), our other DC did not accept incomming authentication request,
directory lookups, or outlook clients logging into Exchange.

I am trying to understand why this issue occurs when we have 2
dircetory servers and exchange is setup to use either of them. DNS is
all setup correctly as well and resolves to both servers. I even checked
the _
directories under the main DNS and manually verified that all SRV
records are in place.

Can anyone render an explanation for this? Is it because one server
has all the FSMO roles? If so, which roles should I transfer to the
other servers?

-Timothy

2003-10-16 Thread Timothy Schilbach
Hi There,

Thank for the reply. Yes it is, but I think I found the answer and the
solution. Its documented here:

http://www.winnetmag.com/MicrosoftExchangeOutlook/Article/ArticleID/25332/MicrosoftExchangeOutlook_25332.html

This did the trick nicely by allowing me to increase the DS auery
intervals. I am also using NetIQ now to look at hung threads in the
Netlogon service.

Technically the server wasnt 'down' but in software failure. I am going
to set NetIq to have a threshhold of so many dead threads and then restart
the Netlogon service.

This can also be accomplished with MOM as well. Thanx all for the
support and have a wonderful day

Microsoft actually recommends it a best practice to run Exchange 2003
forestprep/domainprep before installing the Exch2003 ADC. SO your issue is
something else. We have done this exact scenario several times in our lab.
Actually the lab is one server running VMware GSX, all 6 servers used in the
test are virtual, btw this really works well and saves tons of money.

Basically we cannot get the Public Folders to replicate because there's no

Mark,

I've seen the above document before .. and stuck with one-way CA's after having
problems with two-way connections where processing/updating of a large number of
objects is involved. In addition to your comment concerning separate CA's, I'd also
add that mapping sites/recipients across to OU's on a one-to-one basis CA wise can be
beneficial, particularly if you're dealing with a large number of foreign recipients
within the 5.5 org.

Except that 2 one-way agreements are specifically advised against by MS. As
you've obviously seen you can get away with them sometimes (and we have in
the past) but I wouldn't actively recommend it especially as it comes up in
the MS top ten list of directory service support calls.

See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q303180

Go for one-way initially by all means but then turn it into a two-way by
checking the appropriate box on the CA. We used separate CAs for MBXs, DLs,
CRs to divert them into separate containers.

Regarding your original question you will eventually want to repoint your
other 55 Site and Directory Replication Connectors at the first sites E2K
SRS server, so there's no harm in doing this asap rather than wait for the
last server to go.

RE: Active Directory Connectors

2002-05-15 Thread Mark Harford

Fair point. We initially used ldap filters in our CAs to populate
particular OUs and as a result had to use a complex mixture of Primary and
Secondary one-way CAs.

I've now reduced them to non-filtered two-way CAs now that the initial bulk
of replication has all happened; largely for ease of support by my
colleagues and future exchange/AD admins here.

The most useful thing I found was to have a large whiteboard next to my desk
with a diagram of all the CAs! This ensured I didn't set up duplicate paths
and that all recipients would get replicated.

RE: Active Directory Connectors

2002-05-15 Thread Myles, Damian

Yeah.. true.. particular if you're dealing with large numbers of CA's. Being able to
map them out to individual OU's is a nice feature, instead of just fire and forget.
Been thinking about having a naming convention for CA's so that I don't forget what
they did =)

Did you map across from Exchange--AD/Windows first in the two-way CA's and then back
again (i.e. default)... ?

Mylo

 Mark,

I've seen the above document before .. and stuck with one-way
CA's after having problems with two-way connections where
processing/updating of a large number of objects is involved.
In addition to your comment concerning separate CA's, I'd
also add that mapping sites/recipients across to OU's on a
one-to-one basis CA wise can be beneficial, particularly if
you're dealing with a large number of foreign recipients
 within the 5.5 org.

Go for one-way initially by all means but then turn it into a
two-way by checking the appropriate box on the CA. We used
separate CAs for MBXs, DLs, CRs to divert them into separate
 containers.

Regarding your original question you will eventually want to
repoint your other 55 Site and Directory Replication

harm in doing this asap rather than wait for the last server to go.

2002-05-15 Thread Mark Harford

Here's our naming scheme. Complex but does the job.

[T][One/Two]Way[P/S]([Mbx/DL/CR/PF]) [from/btwn] ORG\site
(FILTER:filter) [to/and] domain (ou)

where
[T] = Test (not present if not Test)
[One/Two]Way= direction of CA
[P/S] = Primary or Secondary (OneWay agreements need one value,
TwoWay need two values).
[Mbx/DL/CR/PF]= Mailbox/DistributionList/CustomRecpients/PublicFolder CA.
[from/btwn] = from if OneWay, btwn if TwoWay
ORG\site = Exchange 5.5 Site
FILTER:filter = description of any LDAP search filters (use value
of Cust Attr 9) *
[to/and]= to if OneWay, and if TwoWay
domain= target AD domain
ou= target ou where relevant

N.B. do not edit these CA's using the normal UI - use ldp or ADSIEdit only.
If you don't know how to use these tools then don't edit these CA's at all.

Did one-way from exchange first.

RE: Active Directory

2002-02-19 Thread Mark Harford

1) You'll need ESM installed on the second DC to view the Exchange
Attributes in ADUC.

2) prior to running the upgrade, could you see the 55 server in the
configuration naming context container in AD? A config connection agreement
will need to be running for this info to replicate into AD and an SRS
running on the first E2K server.

You did install the Exchange ADC I hope (SP2 version preferred). Also it is
not clear whether you have already upgraded another E55 server to 2K.

RE: Active Directory Lost Exchange Info!

2001-10-31 Thread Fred W. Macondray Jr.

Sorry for the alarm. I rebooted my Exchange server and the menu's are
back!

What could cause such strange behavior? I was fearing the worst!

Thanks,
Fred

Help!!!

I just now went to AD to delete one of my valid email addresses only to
find that all integration with AD, the Exchange Tasks and the EMail
tab, are GONE !?! I just performed a bunch of these actions yesterday,
but today their not available :(

What could cause this? I'm only seeing a couple of warnings about being
able to replicate the database.

Thanks in Advance,
Fred

RE: Active Directory Lost Exchange Info!

2001-10-31 Thread Fred W. Macondray Jr.

I went to remove an email address for myself, so Exchange wouldn't
intercept email destined for my cell phone and place it in my Inbox,
only to find that for all users all the Exchange related menu's and
dialogs were gone. It was as though Exchange had never been installed
on the domain!

Perhaps it was a Halloween ghost :o

Thanks
Fred
