I don't know if WinFax Pro has this ability or not. We use Faxination (www.faxination.com). GFI's Faxmaker would work also and is probably less expensive. With each you also have the ability to send faxes from client machines. That may not be one of your requirements but it is an significant productivity booster. RE: Fax to SMTP Appliance
then do yourself a favor get a good Panafax. But note these are industrial/business machines and are not cheap. say like 850 and up..but they never die... you get what you pay for... You better research this a bit more. Cause you not getting away with anything cheap if you want it reliable. First you will need a fax card (forget the modem thing , it does not work reliably..I wont get into the tech about it all) but a Brooktrout analog 2 channel cheapest is like 500.00 then from there If your really good with code you could wrtie something up..you could do the open soft of the fax software that run's on unix (i forget the name, check a linux mag art's about 6 month ago). Reliability cost money, for my 100 some odd users it paid off all 20K of it(that's lot of hardware and all faxiantion softlic..etc...) bill -Original Message- From: Aaron Brasslett [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, January 31, 2003 12:22 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Fax to SMTP Appliance I've got about 100 users. I don't know if WinFax Pro has this ability or not. We use Faxination (www.faxination.com). GFI's Faxmaker would work also and is probably less expensive. With each you also have the ability to send faxes from client machines. That may not be one of your requirements but it is an significant productivity booster. I have Visioneer Strobe scanners on each desktop and being able to scan and send saves a lot of time for the users. All sending and receiving is handled through Outlook. Name Surname (E-Mail) and Name Surname (Business Fax). I guess the idea is to send an e-mail directly to the guy's fax machine... We use the Netmoves fax service, where we basically compose an e-mail with the text/attachments that we want to come out of the recipients fax machine, and we send it to [RECIPIENT_FAX_NUMBER]@netmoves.com. Netmoves converts this to a standard fax and sends it to the fax number as specified in the userid portion of the e-mail address. Can we use this Outlook/Exchange feature which brings up this Name Surname (Business Fax) to automatically send it to [BUSINESS_FAX]@netmoves.com? However, Exchange Server can also have a FAX service or connector installed. This enables the server itself to drive a modem or high grade telephony board to either directly send or receive faxes. Outbound, MAPI clients (i.e. Outlook) or OWA clients can send to a fax recipient using ad hoc addressing, once the FAX address type has been created by adding such a service. Of course, permanent fax addressees can be stored in the AD/GAL or the PAB/CL. Inbound, is a little trickier. If the inbound fax has some DTMF supplemental addressing that maps (insert magic box here) to an AD/GAL addressee, then the MTA can deliver it. Alternately, they can be routed to a specific printer, or a specific secretarial addressee for manual forwarding. Several vendors make one of these combination fax connector and magic box servers for Exchange. Microsoft Fax is a client tool. It is not Exchange Server aware. It's been awhile since I looked at it, but if it can save a document as a fax file, then presumably this could be attached to a mail message and the proper MIME type would get applied. But as the EG's said, this would be lame beyond belief or any human comprehension. Usually people are interested in transmitting digital data and getting non-digital data into some sort of intelligible format. To take a perfectly good digital document, then store it as a useless piece of raster junk, and then send it as an SMTP attachment to someone that has some sort of a junky raster-only printer, well, that would be sad. So it is hard to imagine a scenario in which someone would want to spend money integrating MS Fax to an e-mail service. The right way to leverage MS Fax is in a scenario in which you have a requirement for a small number of users to send or receive Faxes, but can't cost justify the incremental cost of something like OmTool for Exchange over the cost of some personal modems. Some organizations are going to be in a bind with this. Most good enterprise security policies prohibit using a personal modem to link to an external connection while at the same time being connected to the enterprise network. Obviously, something like OmTool solves this problem, but that does not make the cost story any prettier. -Original Message- From: Mike Carlson [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, November 14, 2001 3:58 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Fax Can Exchange act as a Fax Server? RE: Fax
For receiving faxes, consider jfax (http://www.j2.com/index.asp). Receiving is free, you get your own fax number, faxes get emailed to you. They do sending, too, for a minor fee--something like $4.95 a month, plus per minute charges. The free fax receive works great--I've used it for the last year or two, no problem. I haven't used their send fax service, so I can't tell you about that. It's not integrated with Exchange, but you do get faxes via email, and it really really works! Doesn't sound like you really need integration, anyway. RE: Fax server - What is the best solution?
Oh please. I was simply trying to be nice and not point out so bluntly that Gordon's question was a fscking stupid one. What's the best $foo is, in general a poor question indicative of a poster who either doesn't understand the area into which they are delving at all or who is too lazy to actually do a needs analysis for their organization and is hoping for an easy answer. I'm aware that every vendor tries to pass off their product as the best of breed solution for the industry and as being capable of meeting the needs of anyone and everyone. I'm also aware that it's generally complete bullshit. However, that doesn't excuse one from doing some basic internal research into the needs of ones organization with regards to faxing and developing a set of requirements with which to judge the available packages. What's the best $foo? Based on cost? Based on reliability? Based on integration with Exchange? Based on vendor support? Based on required feature $feature? Based on interoperability with $other_application? Based on ease of administration? Based on the name of the vendor whose sales rep your CIO is banging? So, Gordon I'm sorry I pointed out your question was feeble. Rocky, I'm sorry you lacked the ability to clue into what was being said. Discussing fax products isn't off limits, but christ on a cracker, it'd be nice if those wanting to get information about fax products would at least take the time to articulate their needs before asking for a product recommendation. The fax solution I use might be a piss poor solution for Gordon and I fail to see how my mentioning it is of any value to him in determining what subset of products to evaluate. As to Haiku and Fish Tacos... Those are pretty feeble off topic threads as well and I've mentioned that off list to more than one aspiring poet and food critic. This list is a useful resource for getting information quick... Ask a poorly phrased question and you get lots of bad information quickly. Taking the time to do some perfunctory research and to develop an intelligent question often yields better answers, although they come a bit slower, as meaningful information can rarely be conveyed as quickly as bullshit. * Chris Scharff[EMAIL PROTECTED]www.swinc.com Cheshire-Puss, she began, would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here? RE: Fax server - What is the best solution?
The topic has been discussed ad nauseum. Rather than turn a discussion list into a re-hash list, those who were strong advocates of their products made arguments for inclusion of their product in the FAQ.. and in some cases exclusion of their products from the FAQ. Of course the FAQ is a living growing thing, so if someone had something more intelligent to add than I've been using X for 3 days now in my home lab and really like it it might be added to the FAQ as well. If Gordon had asked if anyone knew of a fax product which offered a unique subset of features then perhaps calling FAQ would have been in error. What do you feel is the best fax solution however is at least 6 hours of solid reading in the archives. * Chris Scharff[EMAIL PROTECTED]www.swinc.com Simpler-Webb, Inc. Not to suggest that anybody shouldn't contribute his or her experiences with GFI, but I do recall some comments in the past about this product (but I don't recall whether positive or negative), so you might want to consider a search of the archives. RE: Fax server - What is the best solution?
I would agree. GFI works great. I only have one complaint. That is the split server method they use. Essentially, I didn't want to run it on my Exchange server. I wanted a separate box for it. They don't have a method of installing on a separate box and then just installing the connector on your Exchange box. You have to install the whole program, then make some changes to the path to show it the other server to connect too. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of John Wedderburn Sent: Tuesday, September 04, 2001 3:22 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Re: Fax server - What is the best solution? finished work hours ago.. used only 2 products, zetfax and gfi no issues with gfi at all, works well and delivers zetafax...well if i could run an i hate zetafax list I would, especially based on the level of support they provide.hello, i'm the gimp, how can I help? C'mon Chris, What you are telling me is that you are advocating the use of the list NOT for Exchange discussions (because a newbie might ask dumb questions) but rather for the stupid and ENDLESS conversations about bloody tacos and which hole in my body produces the most gas? How about some haiku Friday? I have no problem listening to that endless drivel all day or most of the drivel out of the list all week and its gang but please don't tell me that someone can't ask a question just because its partially covered by a FAQ. Almost every question asked on this list could be answered with some well done research off the net. People use lists because they are useful for getting the information they need quick without a lot of research. Once they have narrowed their choices down from list responses then they can do their own homework. Every companies website (for exchange faxing) will tell you that theirs is the best. Let's not forget the 100 or so FAQU responses to people's questions about something legitimate. How is someone to know if a solution is problematic or not without soliciting the help of the list? I'm going to expect that anyways but I'd figure someone would listen. I've got news fer ya bud; Ive known Ed for several years now, hoisted more than a couple of beers with him and he still gets sarcastic with me. I think most would consider me a list insider (if such a thing existed). - Original Message - From: Rocky Stefano [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Exchange Discussions [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, September 04, 2001 11:38 PM Subject: RE: Fax server - What is the best solution? Heaven forbid should you side with an outsider on something as touchy as this without at least a hint of sarcasm :) -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Ed Crowley Sent: September 5, 2001 12:31 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Fax server - What is the best solution?
