You need an smtp connector to the internet. The address scope should be
* and a cpst of 1.

Subject: Newbie question. No flames please, I am covered with jet fuel.

Hey all

I have recently built an exchange server at home.
The server and activedirectory as well as exchange went by the book.
I have all of my workstations on the domain and they are working fine.
All of the workstations are connecting to the exchange server without a
problem.
two of the computers have 3rd internet mail accounts on them as well.
(I hope I am making this clear.)
My domain is not registered as of yet because I cannot nail down an
external static IP.(Cable modem blues) That will change once I have a
house.

Now, for the problem.
I cannot send mail to anyone that is not in the gal.

Shouldn't I be able to send mail out regardless of whether my domain is
reistered?
I understand that I will not be able to recieve external mail as far as
the exchange server goes, and the internet mail seems to be working fine
short of sending.

What am I missing here?

Thanks for the help.

You should be able to SEND mail with a bogus domain, but not receive
mail with it.

Keep in mind that some ISPs block port 25 (SMTP) You might have to
relay through your ISP's SMTP server.

On the exchange 2K I build here at work, it sends fine without an SMTP connector.
Is this because of the domain registration, fixed IP etc?

2003-09-03 Thread Chris Scharff
See if from your machine you can telnet on port 25 to any external mail
server (e.g. telnet mail.messageone.com 25). If you can't then see if
you can configure your Exchange server to forward to your ISP's mail
server. If you can... well, then we need to troubleshoot some more.

BTW, you can run a mail server without a fixed IP, by using Dynamic DNS.
Several people in my office do so currently (they're all kinda geeky
though, and need to take a shower).

Create a custom recipient representing his home account. Allow auto-forward

This is not recommended, by the way: the potential for mail loops is large.
Better would be to give him external access to his mailbox.

You can set an alternate recipient in connection properties in the exchange
manager, or you can setup a server based rule to forward the email. Be
careful though, mail loops are caused by such things.

You could setup a Custom Recipient in Exchange.

Now for the caveat. This is a sure fire way to create a mail loop and
crash your Exch box. I would HIGHLY advise against this. If he wants to
read his mail from home or whatever, have him use OWA.
There may also be company issues with this, as now proprietary info is
leaving the company.

information in there.

To answer your question, you could create a custom recipient and forward

data no being kept of company servers, etc.).

Why don't you setup OWA or a VPN for this purpose?

RE: Newbie question so please don 't bash me..

2001-11-19 Thread Benjamin Winzenz

So what part of Daniel's suggestion did you not understand? The Custom
Recipient is set up with an external e-mail address - his home e-mail
address. You can then select that CR as the alternate recipient under
delivery options and it will work once you uncheck Do not allow autoreplies
to the Internet on your IMS. You asked for the easiest way - that is what
was presented. However, as Daniel also said, the potential for mail loops
increases greatly. If you choose to do this, don't come crying back to us
if your server crashes from a loop. Management's job is to give you orders.
Your job is to reply back why some of the orders don't make sense. If you
do a good enough job, you will make them understand that it doesn't make
sense. Make sure that legal has some input on this as well.

RE: Newbie question so please don 't bash me..

2001-11-19 Thread Andy David

Now see, I was always under the impression that using a CR was the lesser of
two evils ( as opposed to simply forwarding by rule) and by using it,
Exchange was better at detecting possible loops. (Not that I dont prefer OWA
or VPN).
Additionally, RFC 2821 specifies:

Simple counting of the number of Received: headers in a message
has proven to be an effective, although rarely optimal, method of detecting
loops in mail systems. SMTP servers using this technique SHOULD use a large
rejection threshold, normally at least 100 Received entries. Whatever
mechanisms are used, servers MUST contain provisions fordetecting
and stopping trivial loops

My questions: Does using a CR (Or Contact in E2k) put Exchange in compliance
with 2821 and what is considered a trivial loop ? -- Or am I simply
misunderstanding the RFC?

RE: Newbie question so please don 't bash me..

2001-11-19 Thread Durkee, Peter

I was under the impression that setting up a CR as an alternate recipient is quite
safe, because the message, as relayed, appears to be from the original sender, not the
address it's relayed from. Because of this, any *mailbox is full*, or *user doesn't
exist* messages go directly back to the original sender, not to the Exchange address
for reforwarding.

Re: Newbie question so please don 't bash me..

2001-11-19 Thread Exchange

Wait a minute. I don't have an Exchange server I can
test with at the moment so someone please correct me
if I'm wrong but, from what I remember, using an
alternate recipient has a very, very low probability
of creating a mail loop. And it does not require that
you uncheck Do not allow autoreplies to the Internet
in the IMS. A message forwarded using an alternate
recipient will not create a mail loop if the home
account is full because the From field will still
contain the originator's address, not the Exchange
user's address as it does if forwarded using an
Outlook rule. So, if the home mailbox is full, the
NDR will be sent to the originator, not back to the
Exchange server then back to the home account, etc.

Or am I remembering this totally wrong?

Steve

You would have to add a custom recipient. But, do you
really want to do
this? What if he hits the limit on his home account?
Then emails start
bouncing... Fowarding off system is not something very
well liked here, you

RE: Newbie

2001-10-25 Thread Alex Alborzfard

I'm a newbie as well. I have the following problem:

I'm trying to set up the following:
Setup the public folders so that users can access it anonymously through
their browser.
I've seen this work on one of our vendor's website like this:

http://servername/exchange/root.asp?acs=anon

But when I do this on our Exchange 5.5 SP4, it gives me this error message:

Unable to render folder There are no published folders.

I have searched Technet and newsgroups for a solution, but with no success.
Does anyone know how to do this?

Thanks

Subject: RE: Newbie

I'm a newbie as well. I have the following problem:

I'm trying to set up the following:
Setup the public folders so that users can access it anonymously through
their browser.
I've seen this work on one of our vendor's website like this:

http://servername/exchange/root.asp?acs=anon

But when I do this on our Exchange 5.5 SP4, it gives me this error message:

Unable to render folder There are no published folders.

I have searched Technet and newsgroups for a solution, but with no success.
Does anyone know how to do this?

Thanks

Hi all, my name is Elizabeth and @ time of posting, I am the newbie
on the list.
I have worked as a software engineer for three years now and have a
pretty competent crosses fingers knowledge of MS products, a
splash of Solaris and a bit of Netscape programming and now having
moved into a house which is firmly trapped in modem-only connection
territory, I am an ISP WAN girl well it is the price I pay for my
house in the country :)
Anyway that is all about me, I look forward to supporting and being
supported by this list.

Regards
E.
