RE: Securing Outlook

2002-05-17 Thread Niki Blowfield

Robert,

Yes, thats exactly what I was looking for. Although I used the term
Security, its in its loosest sense, as its more to stop people just casually
browsing anothers email. If they know how to change that setting, then they
are willing to live with that. By giving everyone access to her logon
suggests what security risk it poses.

In the end, I went a step further and created a new NT account for her
mailbox, meaning anyone can know her NT user password for the purposes of
accessing the fax system, but now she has to enter the new NT account info
when starting her email. The feature I needed was the logon network
security option, as without turning that off, it would just return saying
don't have permissions to access.

thanks

Nik

This machine is intended for anyone to walk onto to forward faxes,
Zetafax sends all faxes to a default logon, so this machine needs to
be logged on in her username so the faxes go to it

Then consider the solution Gary and I suggested. It will stop people
casually viewing her email. If that's not robust enough for you, then
you've got big problems because its not easy to secure stuff on the one hand
and let everyone use her account on the other. One either secures stuff 100%
properly or one leaves holes someone malicious could drive a truck through.

Dear All,

We have a reception computer that is logged on under the receptionists
name 24/7

This is because it runs Zetafax, which in standard form, needs to have a
single person nominated for receiving all our faxes. This receptionist
works until 3:00pm at which time the PC is left switched on and logged
on under her name so that others can distribute faxes.

The issue has arisen of securing her email, which when logged on under
her username, can just be viewed by opening Exchange.

I don't want her to have to log off and back on under another user name
to access her email, it needs to be available from her logon. I also
want to stay away from configuring Outlook in internet mode and having
messages delivered to a PST.

I have played around with the settings, but as far as I can see, you
cant set a password on a profile, only on a data file such as a PST.

Thanks for any advice

From her outlook session - Tools, email accounts, click next on
view/change existing accounts, select her exchange session and click
change. More settings, advanced tab, set logon network security to
 none.

Anyone opening outlook on that login now needs to supply her windows
 username and password.

You might want to see if you can setup another computer for zetafax to use
which doesn't need her to be sat in front of it. Sounds like an awfully
 clumsy system to me.

RE: Securing Outlook

2002-05-16 Thread Robert Moir

Well then we're talking about stopping people who are making an effort to
break into her email, rather than those who are casually glancing around
while sitting in front of a computer - which is human nature - and seeing
things they shouldn't. And I understood we were talking about casual viewing
rather than determined twiddling of settings to break into someone's email.

If we're talking about deliberate attempts to look at other people's mail
that's a whole different kettle of cod, and in that case they've got serious
problems regardless of what happens with outlook because people sharing
logins anyway by the sounds of things.

 Dear All,

We have a reception computer that is logged on under the
 receptionists name 24/7

This is because it runs Zetafax, which in standard form,
needs to have a single person nominated for receiving all our
faxes. This receptionist works until 3:00pm at which time the
PC is left switched on and logged on under her name so that
 others can distribute faxes.

The issue has arisen of securing her email, which when logged
on under her username, can just be viewed by opening Exchange.

I don't want her to have to log off and back on under another
user name to access her email, it needs to be available from
her logon. I also want to stay away from configuring Outlook
in internet mode and having messages delivered to a PST.

I have played around with the settings, but as far as I can
see, you cant set a password on a profile, only on a data
 file such as a PST.

2002-05-16 Thread Niki Blowfield : Exchange

Thanks :)

Actually the...

Tools, email accounts, click next on view/change existing accounts,
select her exchange session and click change. More settings, advanced tab,
set logon network security to none solution

will work fine

When I referred to security, I didn't mean in the strictest of terms. I
don't have to take responsibility, they were going to settle for a memo
ASKING everyone not open her email. I think you can see what I am up
against...

Outlook XP on Win2k with Exchange 5.5

  Thanks for any advice

  Nik

RE: Securing Outlook

2002-05-16 Thread Ryan Malayter

Hey, they've gotten a *little* better since the NT4 days. But they still
a million pointless questions about software RAID for some reason...

I'm going to have to start paraphrasing those tests in project meetings:
Based on the information you've provided, the required objectives
cannot be achieved. That'll teach 'em.

Nope, my answers actually map to reality. How often can you say that
about
an MCSE exam question?

Chris, are you the one that's been writing those pesky MCSE tests?

Based on the operational conditions, the desired objective
cannot be achieved. Since security is not a concern for the
machine or network as a whole, one portion thereof cannot be
 protected.

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear

This machine is intended for anyone to walk onto to forward
faxes, Zetafax sends all faxes to a default logon, so this
machine needs to be logged on in her username so the faxes go to it
