Jeff,

What dates do these files start from? if your backup say ran last night and
you have transactions logs a lot older than when the backup started to run
then it is not clearing them down.

RE: eoo.log files

2002-12-06 Thread Mark Dewell
We use Arcserve and have successfully restore Exchange files/stores after a
server crash.

The Exchange Agent for Arcserve is marketed as a seperate product so you do
need to install this seperately from the main product. Have you actually got
the Agent installed and running?

If not, then yes save yourself some money and use NTBackup (We went the
Arcserve route because it was what we were familiar with and the original
versions of NTBackup supplied with win2000 was not Exchange aware).

Drop Arcserve as it does not work correctly anyway.

If you ever have to restore a server and an ArcServe backup is all you
have, then you have NOTHING. You are pooched.

USE NTBACKUP! (The backup program included with Windows)

These are transaction log files, not recommended to be deleted manually
.You can use Native NT Backup Full or incremental to remove them
safely.
You can also enable circular logging (not recommended either)

RE: eoo.log files

2002-12-05 Thread Hanna, Keith
These log files are pretty important. :)

They are what exchange will use to recover your data after a restore. (You restore the
database, then replay the logs). Yes, exchange will still work, up until you have a
problem anyway.

There are two ways to keep to a minimum[1]:
1. Backup using an Exchange aware product
2. Circular logging.

Also, circular logging = BAD. Or rather, if you want to be able to restore all your
data, circular logging = BAD.

[1] Note, I said keep to a minimum, not stop.[2]

RE: eoo.log files

You don't say what version of exchange, but certainly with ex2000 you can set
the properties of your storage group to use circular logging. I suggest you
read up on the M$ support site the implications of doing this.

Simply deleting the log files is NOT advisable. You don't need them until
your server crashes, then you will find that your mail stores won't mount
without being able to replay the transaction logs that you have just deleted!
Leave them alone.

RE: eoo.log files

2002-12-05 Thread Ali Wilkes (IT)
Jeffrey,

Have you ever read a book about managing Microsoft Exchange?
Have you ever taken a class about managing Microsoft Exchange?
Have you ever before had any experience whatsoever with Microsoft
Exchange?

What you have done is potentially data destructive. It is also a big
no-no. I would suggest you do some learning before you cause any
further damage.

Here are some resources for you to investigate on your own. I would
suggest doing this before you do anything else to your exchange server.

http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm
Managing Microsoft Exchange Server - Paul Robichaux
Exchange Server 5.5 - 24/7
Exchange Server 2000 - 24/7
Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 - Planning, Design and Implementation -
Tony Redmond
Microsoft Exchange Server for Windows 2000: Planning, Design, and
Implementation - Tony Redmond

That should give you a good start.

already got the only good reply there is, do online backups! :)

Drop Arcserve as it does not work correctly anyway.

If you ever have to restore a server and an ArcServe backup is all you
have, then you have NOTHING. You are pooched.

USE NTBACKUP! (The backup program included with Windows)

I use Achserve exchange agent to backup this server but it is
not clearing out these files, as i type there are 12 gig of
these files. I know that I can set exchange to send this
files to bigger drive. But they are not going away, like
 they are suppose to.

Then they likely have circular logging enabled whereby the log is
rewritten over itself. Not so good if you want to be able to restore to
point of failure in the event of a store problem.
