[expert] XFree86 log file out of control

2002-11-06 Thread Brian Parish
Hi experts

Just checked free disk space on my server (mdk 9.0) and found /var
getting low on free space. The culprit was XFree86.0.log which had
expended to 2GB. It was full of messages like:

moutl(8, C70007)
moutl(14, 123C5F)
moutl(18, D0001)
moutl(10, 12BC5F)
minl(40)
moutl(40, 2)
minl(40)
minl(40)
moutl(C, 8000800)

X is loaded on this machine, but very rarely used - only when I need to
use a GUI when out of my depth. Anyone know what these messages might
mean or what circumstance might have caused them to be issued?

TIA
Brian

As far as I know, they can't unless you installed
and are running anonftp. ProFTP won't allow anonymous
FTP logins by default.

Yes, there is. I can think of at least two programs for that very purpose.
One thing to keep in mind however--some people take a very dim view of being
scanned for no good reason... They might even hunt you down and complain to
your ISP--or maybe even the feds...

[expert] MCC/MandrakeUpdate 9.0 doesn't...

2002-11-06 Thread Pierre Fortin

If anyone asks why I don't keep my systems upgraded... the answer is
simple: MandrakeUpdate has not worked for me since LM8.1

Tonight, I've been trying to update 9.0 on my ThinkPad...

Problems:

* unable to connect to mirrors MOST of the time.

* decided to try to upgrade harddrake first -- after a couple of attempts
(getting connect failures on some packages), I got a *Succeeded* message;
YET...
# rpm -qa | grep harddrake
harddrake-ui-1.1.9-53mdk
harddrake-1.1.9-53mdk
# ls /mnt/cdrom/M*/R*/harddrake*
/mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/RPMS/harddrake-1.1.9-53mdk.i586.rpm*
/mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/RPMS/harddrake-ui-1.1.9-53mdk.i586.rpm*
Looks like the SAME version to me -- AKA: NOT upgraded.

* at some point, MU decided that it would pick one mirror and quit asking.
Reset this via S/w Sources Mgr

* Now, no matter which mirror I select, I'm now unable to connect to any;
I keep getting:
# unable to take medium "Updates for Mandrake Linux 8.2 (ftp1u)" into
account as no list file [/var/lib/urpmi/list.Updates for Mandrake Linux
8.2 (ftp1u)] exists
medium "update_source" already exists
---> 8.2?

I can understand the odd error; but this looks like MU's error handling
wasn't even tested...

Installed pwlib1, openh323 and ohphone, like I've done on multiple systems

$ ohphone --listen --no-gatekeeper --bandwidth 2 --ringfile
ohphone.wav --ringdelay 4
ohphone: relocation error: ohphone: undefined symbol: __ti7PThread

strace gives:

{"ohphone", 7}, {": ", 2}, {"undefined symbol: __ti7PThread", 30}, {"",

Yes, an intruder can easily "hack" your machine via FTP, especially if you
aren't very dilligent about applying the latest patches.

> have the ssh server running and that's all i need,

So, why are you using FTP?? Stick with sftp, if this is for your own personal
use, or the use of a small group of people. Even if it's for a large group
of people, you should give it serious consideration...

Someone looking for you, in particular, might have a hard time, but that's not
the problem. The problem is that there are many-many s'kiddies out there,
who are constantly portscanning whole blocks of IP addresses. They don't
have to know (and generally don't care) who you are--they simply find an open
FTP port (on _your_ machine) and "have (hack?) at it"...

Re: [expert] Install trouble with ML9

2002-11-06 Thread Lorne
Boy, it could be a lot of things. Is is stable now?

What I would try, is to remove everything but what is needed and try it. Get
rid of the scanner, scis controller if you can although I've NEVER had any
trouble with the 2940 series. But it would cut out a bunch of things all at
once. Then IF it works, start adding until it works. If it STILL doesn't
work, I'd go over cmos settings and maybe set it to default or safe modes and
see what happens. Another likely culprit could be buggy firmware. Go see if
there is a firmware update for the Mobo. Good luck.

But before you do that, the real problem is that for some reason devfsd
has died. Can you send me (offlist) your /var/log/messages and
/var/log/daemons/info and /var/log/daemons/errors files? It would help
to figure out _what_ caused devfsd to die, then we can know what to look
for in the future.

Subject: [lwlan-user] Warning for Mandrake Users: module conflicts

After a lot of wasted effort trying to get linux-wlan-ng-0.1.16-pre5
running with a Mandrake 2.4.18 kernel, I discovered that Mandrake
included a set of now-obsolete wlan_ng modules
under/lib/modules/2.4.18-8.2mdk/kernel/3rdparty, and that these were
being loaded in preference to the newly-compiled ones.

I moved the contents of the p80211, prism2_pci, prism2_plx, and
prism2_usb subdirectories to a temporary hiding place (I just created a
/root/hide directory), on the off chance that I might need them later.
It should be
safe to just rm them, but I'm not sure that the RPM manglers won't
someday
throw a hissy fit if they can't find everything they installed. Disk
space
is cheap, so I played it safe ;-)

Then I ran a depmod -a, and now the right modules are being loaded.

2002-11-06 Thread Franki
Hi Todd,

I ran drakeopt on that machine,
I played with hdparm, tried all sorts of stuff..

every time the speed went down, not up...

eventually, I gave up and settled for what it had...

and then I gave up on the whole install, I did want to work out what the
prob was, but couldn't afford that box to be down this long..

So I installed nine onto it last night.. and this email is going through it
and my adsl connection...so its all working now..

Its a shame really, I hate not knowning what the answer was..

hopefully mdk9.0 will prove more resilient... :-)

If you have the USB 2.0 then try this:

Ref: file:/usr/share/doc/kernel-doc-2.4.19/usb/ehci.txt

Assuming you have an EHCI controller (on a PCI card or motherboard)
and have compiled this driver as a module, load this like:

~# modprobe ehci-hcd

and remove it by:

~# rmmod ehci-hcd

there are also usb-ohci and plain uhci usb modules, perhaps you need to look

to test do (as root):
# modprobe uhci

#modprobe usb-ohci

Re: [expert] MDK 9 & Sony Clié

2002-11-06 Thread Simon Ree
I have found that binding to ttyUSB1 will not work until the
port is created and destroyed once prior to hotsync and not
before pilot-link has had an initial connection.

My method after clean install of Mandrake (only has to be
done once)

1. command line
2. plug in and press hotsync
3. let the device time out, clear error on device
4. press hotsync
5. pilot-xfer -p ttyUSB1 -b /home/me/clie/backup

After a successful backup (hopefully), run jpilot and set
the port up in preferences /dev/ttyUSB1. Close jpilot,
press sync on the device and open jpilot and press sync...
should work.

I have found on all syncs after the initial sync that jpilot
will not communicate with my clie until the device times out
once.

1. press sync on the device/cradle and let it time out
2. press sync again and then open jpilot and press sync

Support should be better than this but the what can you do.

Let me know if it works for you. This method works on my 3
different machines.

trying to put the box to sleep. If so turn off or even remove apm from
the box and boot with an append of "noapic".

Done this already. It is covered in Mandrake errata.
I'm thinking now that it may be a network issue that is causeing the
problem rather than a video issue. Cable service in this town sux and
is up and down frequently. Although I may be wrong, sometimes trouble
on the network seems to coincide with the shutdown.

OK, so here is the speil...

My server has been locking up on me after an unspecified amount of time.
Sometimes it locks up during a re-install but I think only after the
network has been configured. I'ld had some much trouble with it that I
took it down and jacked a client system (WinXP) directly into the cable
modem. Left it running all night and in the morning, guess what... lockup!

So... 2 different machines and 3 different OS's. Windows XP pro and
Linux Mandrake versions 8.2 and 9.0. Also recently had hardware trouble
with a 3rd system. What could possibly be causeing this? It is a
fairly recent occurance, all 3 machines worked fine all summer with XP
and Mandrake 8.2 as the server. I'm out of ideas so I need some
brainstorming, guys.

Maybe the cmos battery needs to be replaced. Solved my problem when I had the
same situation that you are having now.

I'm not able to afford the powerpack version and no broadband to dowload

them to staples.

Weird, I used DrakConf to repartition a HD and it worked pretty well.

However, DrakConf only works with fat32 and ext2 filesystem, not with
NTFS. Thats why I think you lost your fstab.

If you want dma off on your cdrom, you should not have to do anything on 9.0.
If you examine the sysinit script, you'll see that Mandrake 9.0 is already
turning off dma on the optical drives. You shouldn't have to pass ide=nodma
to the kernel and then turn on dma on the harddrive. Wouldn't that prevent
the kernels ability to handle dma from the hard drive as opposed to just
turning it off on a specific drive.

Is it not possible to turn DMA off with hdparm?

> Has anyone else tried anything like this?

I'll give it a try and see if it makes a difference. I too don't want to
go through the hassle of manually mounting stuff, after all supermount
is meant to be a differentiating feature right?

I can supply my drive info if any supermount hackers want to work with
me to find a better cure. According to the thread
http://www.mail-archive.com/expert@;linux-mandrake.com/msg59783.html
there is not much point reporting it to lkml.

Yes I have found this to be true as well, this works for me, as I am
running crap hardware.. First I pass ide=nodma using lilo and the
append line, then when booting up I use hdparm just to switch DMA on
just for the hard drive "hdparm -d1 /dev/hda" and this seems to work
quiet well..

I have tried other tricks through LILO like ide1=nodma but this not
work, and the fault remained..only through totally switching off the
IDE DMA and switching back on for the hard seems to work me...

Has anyone else tried anything like this?

Cheers
