 I have a removable drive setup for my usb LS120 drive, the fstab line of

 /dev/sdb /mnt/camera auto
 user,iocharset=iso8859-15,dev,sync,codepage=850,suid,umask=0 0 0

 Mounted all.
 I created a drive icon in the Removable Drive folder. Attempting to mount
 from here opened a browser, but then said 'Could not connect to host
 navigation.realnames.com'.

 Next - had I forgotten to get something read correctly? So, re-boot to
 make sure. Make sure everything plugged in and powered on, to enable
 detection.

 Half way down boot-up messages, one that said (as best I can remember)

 mount: fs type umask=0 not supported by kernel

 During hardware detection it hung. After about 5 minutes I switched the
 camera off, and saw a message about disconnecting 'device 6', I think it
 was.

 I am out of my depth here. Can someone please tell me to what extent
 things are functioning correctly, and give me any pointers as to whether
 the problem can be tackled, or whether it indicates lack of kernel support
 for this device?

 I cannot think of any more logical approaches.

2003-03-22 Thread Francisco Alcaraz Ariza
Anne,

I added a line in fstab like this:

/dev/sda1 /mnt/camera auto user,noauto,nosuid 0 0

I must say that I have supermount disabled (9.0), I created a hd icon on kde
selecting /dev/sda1 as device. Also I had to created the directory (mkdir -m
777 /mnt/camera)

Under 9.1 rc2 a line similar was automatically added to fstab and into the
removable media ico I could create the hd icon. Runing fine

 Do you have an fstab line for it? I have an entry in KDiskFree for
 /dev/sdb as /mnt/camera, but when I try to mount it I get 'No medium
 found'. This is the same message as I have got when trying to mount in
 from command line.

 Are you reading xD cards with yours?

I will be a great distributions, the Mandrake team has
worked very well, draktools look pretty well and now seems
that all are runing (even my digital camera has been
instaled throughout a line in the fstab about usb-storage
media).

I hope Mandrake could survive to its finnancial problems,
there has been a great activity the last month (new
releases, a book, ..

Anyway, I have the cooker from last mondey with some updates
packages, so it is practically the real 9.1, but I am still
nervous waiting for it.

(^_^) Happy for Mandrake 9.1, :-( sad because it seems that
sooner millions of irakies will probably be fighted by the
war.

The President of the Governement of Spain is in favour of the war, but I am
free to refuse him; are you actually free? in fact you are in the country of
the freedom, or. perhaps not?.

Just a thing more; if you don't use Mandrake 9.1 because you are the most
patriotic american, you will lost the possibility of use the best linux
distribution nowadays.

Poor Ric!

 Let me put it this way:
 I spent a number of years living in Europe, and Asia, because I so
 strongly disagreed with the things my govenrment was doing. I'm very
 near to doing the same thing again.

 I don't agree with what they are doing. I don't agree with the war. I
 feel that there are far greater threats to the world than Iraq, and
 issues of far greater importance within the US that need to be
 addressed, and our president is refusing to address them.

 That does not however defer my support for my country.
 It also does not make me forget who my friends are.

 Eric, none of this is targeted at you. I doubt that you, or I could sway
 the direction of things. I also doubt that my support (or lack of) for
 MDK would impact you, the person. My statement is targeted at
 Mandrakesoft.
 They want my support.
 The US needs Frances support.

 Pressure from one, can effect the other.

 Ric

 Ummm, Ric, what is Mandrakesoft's position on the possible war with Iraq?
 How do you know that they, Mandrakesoft, aren't in favor of it and lobbying
 their government to change it's position? You don't and neither do I.

 What I do know is that this is not the proper forum for this type of
 discussion. Someone, I don't remember who, has set up a list for OT
 discussions. That might be the more appropriate forum (and no, I am not
 another self proclaimed list moderator).

Re: [expert] Kodak Digital Camera and MDK9

2003-01-25 Thread Francisco Alcaraz Ariza
It uses CompactFlash.

OK, then you need to conect it as a scsi device, those are the step you should
follow (I hope it will work for you):

A) be sure the next modules are loaded (as root with lsmod):
usb
usb-core
usb-storage
ide-scsi

If some of then are not loaded, you shoud probe them (modprobe usb-storage,
for example); if not error message the next time you must install with insmod
usb-storage (for the same example).

B) It is a good idea to create a dir to mount the camera in: mkdir -777
/mnt/camera (for example; you can select other montage point if you like).

C) conect the camera to the computer using the usb cable; put the camera in
the position of download images (usually the same position to see in the
visor the images, if you have one).

D) The first time you should test as root the montage:

mount -t auto /dev/sda1 /mnt/camera

If everything has gone well, as root you can open konqueror, nautilus or other
file-explorer and going to /mnt/camera see the images stored in the
CompactFlash. You can now copy the images or avi files to any directory in
you HD.

ARemember to umount (umount /mnt/camera)

E) If D has run for you, you can make a change in the /etc/fstab file to allow
any user mount and umount /mnt/camera. For this add the next line inf
/etc/fstab:

/dev/sda1 /mnt/camera auto user,noauto,nosuid 0 0

Remember that a blank line should be at the end of the fstab file (add it if
is needed).

Now, still as root: mount -a

And any user will be able to mount and umount the camera when conected. As I
use KDE, it is easy create a new icon (create---new hd-- and select as
montage point /dev/sda1), so you can mount and umount easily the cameras as a
removable media.

Good luck and don't forget to tell me if its run :-)

[expert] First 9.1beta frustrating experience

2003-01-11 Thread Francisco Alcaraz Ariza
Dear friends,

After 13 hours I downloaded the beta1 and try to test it using my /dev/hdb13
partition that was previously using LiNeX (Linux distribution from the
Extremadura Spanish community). But I have a real nightmare:

a) My wheel mouse wasn't runing fine, in the selection packages I had to use
the intro key.

b) No possibility to cancel lilo installation (I liked to mantain the 9.0 lilo
configuration and later add from 9.0 a new entry for 9.1beta).

c) No X configured (nvidia geforce 4 and monitor Philips 107S); I try to do it
but having supermount enabled the disk didn't mount in anyway. I try to
dissable supermount (supermount -i disable) and activate the new fstab
configuration (mount -a) but two partition that I have mounted for echange of
files with 9.0 had XFS file system and there were an error: XFS not in
enabled in the kernel :-(. After that I thought I could mount the cdroms by
hand, but an error gives me to more frustation about too much system mounted,
or file system error.

d) I try to restart using my Mandrake 9.0 start disk, but then an error with
file system appear for /dev/hdb13 (the partition with 9.1), telling that I do
need a newer version of ext3 :-(.

e) I started my computer from the Mandrake 9.0 first cdrom, start a new expert
installation, just select the /dev/hdb13 partition and format it; then I
restart and Mandrake 9 run fine from the floppy; I went to the Mandrake
control center and lilo configuration; I didn't made any change, but clicking
accept the 9.0 lilo configuration was again saved on the harddrive. I restart
the computer and then the lilo 9.0 runs from the hd.

Conclusion: I will reserv the cdrw with 9.1 beta 1 to save beta 2; I think I
will not try again an installation until the next beta. :-(

Re: [expert] mldonkey, kazaa, emule

2002-12-30 Thread Francisco Alcaraz Ariza
I suppose you are tolking of kazaa lite 2.0.2; the installation under wine is
different than for 1.7; this is I did to have it installed:

1) You nee to add in your /home/user/.wine a new directory named
fake_windows and inside it a directory named Windows and inside it another
named System (/home/user/fake_windows/Windows/System); in this directory
(System) you need to add the following files from the windows system
directory: winspool.drv, commctrl.dll, comct132dll, comdlg32.dll,
shdoclc.dll, shdocvw.dll, shlwapi.dll, ole32.dll, oleaut.dll and rpcrt4.dll

2) In your wine config file you need to add:
[Version]
windows = win98

and at the end of the file:

[AppDefaults\\Kazaa.exe\\DllOverrides]
winspool.drv = native
commctrl = native
comctl32 = native
comdlg32 = native
shdoclc = native
shdocvw = native
shlwapi = native
ole32 = native
oleaut32 = native
rpcrt4 = native

3) Now you can choice between run kazaa from your windows partition or do a
installation in your .wine/fake_windows directory (wine
kazaa_lite_202_englishexe)

That runed for me in both cases, a installation in .wine and run kazaa from
the windows partition.

2002-12-29 Thread Francisco Alcaraz Ariza
Saint,

First of all I reach to download to big files (700Mb) using mldonkey; on the
other hand kazaa is runing fine, just some menus give me problems (help
menu), but it runs using wine. In the case you like run kazaa, I followed the
english instructions of the next web page:

http://www.christian-gerner.de/computer/linux/kazaa.htm

but I had to download the rpm of the last codeveawers wine version
(20020904-7).

BTW, word97 and excel run fine using this wine release, but ¡I prefer
OpenOffice!

If you have problems to understand the instructions, please ask me and I will
give you a detailed description about how I did it?

Good luck!

[expert] mldonkey, kazaa, emule

2002-12-27 Thread Francisco Alcaraz Ariza
I have tested several files-share packages under linux, but the performance is
not as good as I would like. Mldonkey seems to be good, lot of servers and
shared files, but when I try to download big files, usually the download
sooner or later stops. Using wine kazaa runs fine, but I found less avi files
avalaible. Some people has tolked so good about Emule, but I haven't been
able to find a linux release or how to run it under wine. Gnutella and
edonkey didn't convice me.

Does anyone have good experience with those or others packages?

Thanks so much in advance for the help, yours sincerely

That was wath I did with 3 different cameras (Olympus, Nikon, Fuji) and all of

automatice):

A) have loaded the next modules: usb, usb-core, usb-storage, ide-scsi

B) Create a directory to mount the camera: mkdir -m 777 /mnt/camera

C) Plug-in the camera via USB, put it in download position.

D) mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/camera
(you can also mount with auto file sistem.

Now I have the camera contents as a new scsi drive (/mnt/camera) and I can
easily copy the images to my actual harddrive

I hope this could help you

   The Linux installer is on disc 3 of the boxed set.

   You need to be running a very fast machine with the proprietary nVIDIA

   space.

   Here are a couple of things to need to know to install it.

   Have two xterms open. Mount the cdrom from one and do the install on
   the other. Use the full path to the setup binary. You will need to
   mount and unmount a number of times during the process.

   Also there is a difference between what is written on the discs and
   what the installer calls for. (It thinks that there is a play disc,
   disc 1

   and disc 2 instead of discs 1, 2 3.) Just offset by one and it
   should

   work. If it does not like the disc, just try another. ]:

   BTW, it works great as long as you have a very fast machine.

 The Linux installer is on disc 3 of the boxed set.

 You need to be running a very fast machine with the proprietary nVIDIA
 drivers (as well as an nVIDIA video card) and lots of memory and disk
 space.

 Here are a couple of things to need to know to install it.

 Have two xterms open. Mount the cdrom from one and do the install on the
 other. Use the full path to the setup binary. You will need to mount and
 unmount a number of times during the process.

 Also there is a difference between what is written on the discs and what
 the installer calls for. (It thinks that there is a play disc, disc 1
 and disc 2 instead of discs 1, 2 3.) Just offset by one and it should
 work. If it does not like the disc, just try another. ]:

 BTW, it works great as long as you have a very fast machine.

 First off: Before editing anything, copy the files you are going to edit

 catch off the top of my head, you can always restore your network
 configs to the state you are in right now.

 IP Masquerading is a feature of the Linux kernel, it doesn't come in a
 rpm.

 Check the settings in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and make
 sure they are OK. If you use DHCP it should only have this in it:

 DEVICE=eth0
 BOOTPROTO=dhcp
 ONBOOT=yes

 Edit file /etc/sysconfig/network and set the attribute FORWARD_IPV4 to
 false. Also check that GATEWAY attribute is set correctly. If you use
 DHCP, this doesn't matter as it will be overridden.

 When done, reload your network configs with 'service network restart'
 and you should be set.

 All of the above needs to be done as root.

[expert] Nvidia tvout: solved

2002-10-26 Thread Francisco Alcaraz Ariza
Well,
It seems that at the moment nvtv (release 0.4.04) can't work with my video
card chip (Geforce 4 Titanium 420), but the Nvidia drivers can run relatively
well; after looking for information in the Internet, I found the solution,
just adding in the XF86Config-4 file the next lines in the Section Devices:

Option TwinView
Option SecondMonitorHorizSync 30-50
Option SecondMonitorVertRefresh 60
Option ConnectedMonitor null,TV
Option TVStandard PAL-B
Option TwinViewOrientation Clone
Option Metamodes
1024x768,null;800x600,800x600;640x480,640x480;

Now I can have the image in both, pc-monitor and tv, at 800x600 and 640x480
resolutions, so switching between resolutions (CTRL+ ALT++ or -) . Ah!
and at the maximum ressolution just is activated the pc-monitor.

Have a good day; yours sincerely

[expert] Nvidia runing but...

2002-10-25 Thread Francisco Alcaraz Ariza
Dear Friends,
I finally bought a Creative Blaster 4 Titanium 4200 with the Nvidia Geforce4
Ti chip. Thanks to the comments in this list and the expert one the
installation was very easy.
First I edited initab to put the text mode star; then I installed the two rpm
nvidia files and also the nvtv file; I activated harddrake service and stoped
the computer.
Then I made the change of my Voodoo3 3000 and I put the new video-card in the
AGP slot. I started again Mandrake and harddrake erase the Voodo3 3000
installation. From the console as root I started XFdrake and few seconds
later I had my new card instaled with DRI runing.

Now I am testing several programes: tuxracer impressive, xine fine, Armagetron
and Chromium runing fine.

But I have found two problems:

1) Quake III looks awfull; perhaps I need to select some special graphic
characteristics; the videos and demos look very nice, but when I start to
play the graphics are very bad.

2) With nvtv (tv-output) I can see the colors bars in my tv, but when I try to
send the whole screen to the tv just a white screen. Perhaps I need to change
something in the XFree86 Config files.

Any help will be welcome; thanks a lot in advance for your help.

Perhaps, as one of the Republicans said, Bush is too much of the right wing.
the Kyoto accords in fact would be insufficient to stop the global climate
change, they just could make it go a little be slow. And what about the
galaxy war, just the very right Spanish Prime Minister (Aznar) has supported
that crazy strategy in the European Community (but, perhaps Blair also, but
this was obvious).

Globalization in fact could be good if means help for the poorer peoples of
the Earth and not more explotation, not multinationals enterprise eating
small ones and eliminating the competence to make unique and very expensive
products. The last that we need now is start again gun manufacturation, more
polution to our environment and other things that Bush is predicating in
favour all over the rich World.

We must look for alternatives; I hope an united Europe could be, and Europe
in favour of the 0.7%, open source software, solar energy, solidarity,
richness redistribution and so one. Unfortunately, most of our nowadays
Governement are of the right wing, even some of them named laborist or of the
left-center :-(

But we have linux in our computers and this is a clear bet for the freedom

poor countries in Africa. That we need, not more guns!

[expert] SunJava not present in spanish power-Pack 8.0

2001-06-24 Thread Francisco Alcaraz Ariza

I don't know if this happen also to other people that have bought the
Power-Pack edition of MDK 8 (Spanish version or not), but in the cd named:
Coomercial applications CD 2 ES/IT (x86) the directory /SunJava is empty and
the /RPMS4 don't present any SunJava rpm or related.

Is this just a problem of my linux-box or is it widely extended?

[expert] Help needed: perl local settings not supported

2001-06-23 Thread Francisco Alcaraz Ariza

Dear folks, I need some help.

For test ogle (a new dvd linux project), I had, from MDK 8.0 to upgrade the
next files:
binutils to 2.11.9
libtool to 1.4.5
glibc to 2.2.3
gcc to 2.96

In fact ogle works, but when I was upgrading some of the programes give me
the next warning

perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:
LANGUAGE = es_ES:es,
LC_ALL = (unset),
LC_MESSAGES = es_ES,
LC_TIME = es_ES,
LC_NUMERIC = es_ES,
LC_CTYPE = es_ES,
LC_MONETARY = es_ES,
LC_COLLATE = es_ES,
LANG = es
are supported and installed on your system.
perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale (C).

Now the kde application can't accept accents (but, for example, openoffice or
nedit still runs fine).

I have seen the kde configuration and the keyboard and country are well
configured.

Any ideas?

Thanks so much for your help, yours sincerely

[expert] Fwd: Printing using cups

2001-06-21 Thread Francisco Alcaraz Ariza

I gare!

I have been able to print using OpenOffice 632, installed from the binary
linux file, and cups ^_^ under Mandrake 8.0.

This is the situation and what I did:

A pentium III 800 with an Epson Stylus Color 760 conected to the USB1 port;
and a HPLaserJet 4L conected to the Parallel Port.

Cups installed; I have the two printers configured in the next way:
lp: Epson Stylus in 360 DPI quality
lp1: HP LaserJet 4L in 300x300 dpi quality
lp2: Epson Stylus Color in 180x120 dpi quality
lp3: HP LaserJet 4L in 150x150 dpi quality

Using ~/openoffice60/spadmin (./spadmin, is the printer administration of
openoffice) I created a Generic Printer and in the Properties I choose in the
Command page xpp (also qtcups run) as command --Select command options; usign
Configure as: Printer---

Now, when I have a document to print in openoffice, If I select print the
xpp menu (or tht qtcups if I use that command) appears and I can select one
of the four mentioned possibilities and runs fine ^_^; better than with
Staroffice 5.2.

I hope this could help to Moyne and other linux users with cups installed
(for example for most of Mandrake 7.2 and 8.0 users).

I think the openoffice contributors are working fine, with 627 it was
impossible for me to print, now, with 633 I can use the great possibilities
of cups; great work! :-)

[expert] xcdroast segfaults

2001-06-19 Thread Francisco Alcaraz Ariza

Go to Mandrake cooker; select a server and dowload:

cdrecord-1.10-1mdk.i586.rpm
cdrecord-cdda2way-1.10-1.i586.rpm
mandrakedesk-8.0-10mdk.i586.rpm
mkisofs-1.13-7mdk.i586.rpm
xcdroast-0.98-8mdk.i586.rpm

Put them in a directory and type from that:
rpm -Uvh *.rpm --force --nodeps

And then you'll can run xcdroast as root and as user, without core dump
problem.

Good luck!

Re: [expert] Vodoo3000 Problems with Fullscreen MDK 8.0

2001-06-18 Thread Francisco Alcaraz Ariza

Is a bug in XFree 4.0.2 and 4.0.3 with DRI enabled. The problems appears when
you use a graphical login, mainly with kdm; with gdm and xdm the problems
could appears but just time to time.

The problem is actually about the resolution switch; if you try to change
resolution pressing: (CTRL)+(ALT)+(+) you will get the same x-crashes error.

The best solution we have found: text login; just using mandrake control
center change this or, if you prefer, putting in inittab the default start
mode in 3, not 5 (5 is graphical mode).

At the moment, it seems Xfree haven't solved the bug :-(

For some authors Bonobo is based in the comunication models of Windows, but
with the basic structure of CORBA. Nowadays, Bonobo allows any aplication
look into the data of anyother aplication and use it as a tool.

Technologically it seems it is posible create gnome-virus and the sandbox
model is relatively easy to be jumped (this is an affirmation put on in a
Spanish magazine -Solo Linux, number 12-).

I use mainly KDE, but I am also interested in know others windows manager,
gnome is the other main candidate, but now, with the 1.4 version in MDK 8,
that uses Bonobo, I am wondering if it could be a good idea use it.

What do you think?, if the philosophy is based in Visual Basic, the
possibility of macro-virus is true, isn't it?

I hope we can have a good discussion about this subject.

I have solved the problem ^_^, well, actually I have found the solution in

You haven't overlooked anything, it's a Motif design flaw. Netscape

will likely follow suit with the next major release.

MDK 8.0 look great now, not errors, true graphic acceleration, Usb Scanner,
DVD (xine and videoland runs fine using xvideo), ip-maskering, printers,
cable-modem, sound.

What more could I ask for!
:-( Yeah!, the pcmcia ethernet card in the laptop (Ovislink fast ethernet),
but is very difficult (nobody in the world seemed to have reached that);
perhaps change to a clearly compatible with linux.
The happyness never could be complete, could it?

See you, thanks for your attention; I look forward to hearing from you and
crashtesters runing again ^_^

 There is always a way to make a bootup error message disappear unles it is
 direct from the kernel.

 Most such messages are generated by initscripts. To find where yours is
 omig from fairly rapidly, get into a terminal, su to root, cd to /etc/rc.d/
 and

 # rgrep -i -l -r ipvsadm /etc/rc.d

 That should find you yht call or calls that might be generating the error
 message. Comment out the appropriate lines (watch that you don't break
 loops, either take them out or leave them alone), and no more error
 messages.

 It is not necessarily a good practice to do this--usually error messages
 mean something important, but sometimes they are spurious as this one
 appears to be.

 Big snip of previous message

Re: [expert] Mandrake 8.0 Voodoo DRI

2001-05-01 Thread Francisco Alcaraz Ariza

John, I sent a message to the bug support of XFree86, an automatical answer
said that they are studing the problem and they will communicate to me sooner
o later ; Guillaume said also that hi has sent the information to the person
in Mandrake that works with the X.

As soon that I had messages from they I'll e-mail you and, I think, also the
expert list because probably there are more user of linux with a Voodoo that
perhaps could think they have a installation or a hardware problem.

So I will get in touch

Re: [expert] Mandrake 8.0 Voodoo DRI

2001-04-30 Thread Francisco Alcaraz Ariza

John, I have the same problems in 8.0, nor in 7.2; but in beta 2 and beta 3 I
had it also; it seems a problem with XFree86 4.0..2 and 4.0.3, because using
xine and videoland with xvideo activated (a way to use directly the graphic
hardware without XFree86) I can get full screen.

Ah! is not a problem with DRI, because programs that don't use DRI, like
clanbomber, heretic II or pingus also crashes X.

Perhaps we should communicate the problem to the XFree team, but we must be
sure this is the cause of the X crashes!

 Has anyone experienced any weirdness with 8.0 and a voodoo3 using DRI? I
 just did a vanilla install and have noticed that if I try to change
 resolutions with DRI running the xserver restarts, also if I try to run a
 program that uses DRI like Quake3 or Chromium in full-screen the xserver
 restarts. I swaped video cards and ended up having to go back to 7.2 to
 be able to use DRI correctly.

Re: [expert] Mandrake 8.0 Voodoo DRI

2001-04-30 Thread Francisco Alcaraz Ariza

John, have you try with games that don't use the DRI, like clanbomber or
pingus, they also crashes X due to the full screen!!!, but your experiment
dissabling DRI seems to be a very good clue, perhaps those games I mentioned
before don't use DRI, but if it is activated DRI is the responsible of the
resolution change and because that it hangs X.

Very good experiment! according to the scientific method :-).

I think the conclusions are very solid; I will send this message also to
Guillaume Cottenceau, he said me that I was using a Voodo3 3000 (exactly the
same that the mine) with XFree86 4.0.3 without problems; I thought that I
could have a special problem due to my hardware, but the last messages are
showing that the problem is generalizated with XFree86 4.0.3 (and I had the
problem also in beta 2 with 4.0.2) and Voodoo3 3000 (also probably with 2000).

I hope Guillaume could give as the way to solve the problem or the way to
communicate it to XFree86 team.

If some of us find the solution, this list could be a goog meeting point.

See  you soon

 You're right. This is what I've done thus far to try to isolate the
 problem:

 Problem:

 When changing resolutions X server crashes and restarts. when loading
 Quak3 xserver crashes and restarts. when loading Chroimium in windowed
 mode everything works fine including DRI, when Chromium is switched to
 fullscreen mode, X server crashes and restarts.

 Tests made:

 1. Switched card with another known good Voodoo3. Same problem.

 2. Commented our Load DRI from /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. Can switch
 resolutions without X server crashing, however Quake runs EXTRMEMLY slow
 becasue there is no DRI device to use.

 3. Remove DRI comment and problem returns

 4. Comment Load GLX from XF86Config-4. Problem persists.

 This may not be the best troubleshooting in the world, but it convinced me
 that the DRI in X 4.0.3 is what was causing my problems.

 Not to say that DRI is not working, because Chromium will work in windowed
 mode. More specifically I think the problem is that changing resolutions
 while using DRI is what is casuing the crash. This can be seen from step
 2 above. what do you think?
