Anne, thanks for the tips, however, I have MULTIPLE profiles and MULTIPLE
folders specifically for mailing lists. Trust me, I've been using KMail for a
LONG time now... :-) I was so very happy to be able to download my SpamCop

[expert] Thinking of switching to Mandrake

2003-11-13 Thread John Aldrich
I'm thinking of switching to Mandrake from RedHat 9 since RedHat is
effectively discontinuing the full-fledged "hobbyist" version of RedHat and
splitting the userbase between "Fedora" for those of us who don't have
several hundred dollars for "enterprise" linux and those who have the money
and need for "Enterprise" linux.

My question is, how well would the switch go? I typically keep my home
directory on it's own partition and another partition with some MP3s and
other miscellaneous data. I typically blow everything else away and reformat.
One thing I liked about RedHat was that when I did this, it would recognize
how my system was partitioned and offer to re-use the old partitions. Will
Mandrake do this for me? I'm on RedHat 9.0 right now with ext3 file systems
throughout.

I have used Mandrake before, but the last time I think I used it was back
around Mandrake 5 or 6, before they made it so difficult to get ISOs of the
distro. I basically liked it then, but there were a few "advanced" features I
wasn't so thrilled with, but I'm looking at giving it another shot.
Thanks...
John

Sure... what video card is in this thing? If it's an old 2-4 meg
video card, it's not going to have NEARLY the performance that a nice
16 or 32 meg card does... and more RAM on the video card leaves more
RAM up for grabs on the motherboard. At least it would seem logical
that if you've got that much RAM, display-related stuff would use
that video ram...

Turned out to be a reverse DNS problem. Put the IP and
machine name of the requesting machine in the "hosts"
(/etc/hosts I think) file and HOPEFULLY everything should
work... Or, set up a DNS server on your lan and set it up
to forward requests for outside systems to your ISP's name
server and handle all in-house DNS.

This is correct. Linux does NOT need EZ-Bios. All you need is to have
is enough of the kernel within an area that the bios can read and
then linux takes over after boot.

atd
autofs
crond

Just open the case and take a look. Sure it'll be slightly
more expensive to buy stuff in a store. Or, just swipe one
of the sticks of ram and (using something like a pencil so
as to limit the possibility of damage) count the individual
connectors. Also there should be some information on the
sticks of ram that tells whether it's EDO, Fast-Page or

Hmm...what kind of machine does your friend have? If it's a
pentium or 486, chances are you're right -- it is 72-pin
simms. Your best bet is to open the case, grab one of the
existing simms / dimms and take it with you to the store.

Hard question. If it's for a desktop system, I'd disable
everything in /etc/inetd.conf, as well as just about
everything else. If it's an internet machine, you
DEFINITELY want to shut off everything in /etc/inetd.conf
for security reasons alone.

Hmm... not really. You don't give us a lot to go on. I
mean, are we talking a 486, a P100, what? I'm guessing a
high-end Pentium or better since you said something about a
multi-gig hard drive and those wouldn't work in a 486.

If you don't already have a good video card, get a really
good video card with lots of RAM on it too (Riva TNT based
card or Voodoo 3 of some sort are good cards, both
available in PCI or AGP!)

Upgrade the RAM! 32MB is pushing it QUITE a bit! I've got a 32-meg
system here (K6-300) and it's somewhat slow. It also depends on what
sort of CPU speed you have. Please keep in mind that Mandrake is

I suppose I should clarify --
My Omniveiw SE can handle up to 4 ports and the computer selection is
PREFERABLY handled by using the scroll lock to scroll through the
machines (unfortunately, there's no menu, so you have to cycle
through all the machines on the KVM switch) but you can also manually
cycle through by using the button on the switch itself to cycle
through the machines. It's definitely much easier to use the scroll
lock button on the keyboard... :-)

You CAN get a single-ethernet router, but my understanding is that
they have become pretty strict about who can get it. You have to have
a GOOD reason to get it, something other than "I don't want an
internal DSL modem" or "I run linux and an internal DSL modem won't
work." They're quite happy to ignore the fact that you run linux, as
long as you don't run a SERVER on it.

Set up a P100 (or similar easy/cheap PC) to act as a firewall and give
it two network cards, then run a cable from one NIC to the DSL router
and one to a hub for you and your wife.

Yes and no. You don't really want a "live" IP on your machine. It
makes it too vulnerable to attack. Use SSH instead as well. MUCH
safer! :-) Here's what I understand (not being a DSL user myself):
You get a "lease" on an IP for as long as your computer is turned on.
Next time you reboot, you get a new IP.

Or just install anyway, and make a boot disk. Then, go get the

WHAT BRAND OF HARD DRIVE ARE YOU USING Are you trying
to use an ATA/66 hard drive??? If so, what controller? Are
you aware that Mandrake has tightened the code for some
things such that "out of spec" hardware will no longer
work? That's why some people are complaining about WD hard
drives which worked in Mandrake 7, but no longer work in
7.1, because Mandrake is expecting the hard drive to
perform up to spec, and if WD has crippled their hard drive
by not manufacturing to spec, then it's Western Digital's
fault, NOT Mandrake's. Just because they are more demanding
of the hardware does NOT mean it's THEIR fault.

Ever stop to wonder what's different about Mandrake than
anyone else? Hmm? Well, one BIG difference is they are
optimizing their code for Pentium or better. RedHat
doesn't. If you want to use hardware that is NOT
manufactured to the specifications, back down to RedHat.
Until you tell us WHAT BRAND OF HARD DRIVE you have, you're
not going to win!

Try DrakConf. It may be that Mandrake has a preferred way to set up
the mouse, and DrakConf would likely be the way to get to it. If that
doesn't work, I dont' know what else to suggest.

This could be the problem -- ISTR reading that Mandrake "tweaked"
ext2 for the 7.1 release. Further, you still haven't said who the
hard drive manufacturers are. There are known issues with Western
Digital's implementation of Ultra/66 IDE, which according to this
list are failures by the MANUFACTURER to follow the standard. They
are still, from what I read, complying with the 386-architecture
standard instead of the Pentium/Pentium2/Pentium3 architecture
requirements.

If the hardware manufacturers only pay lip service to the standards,
why are you blaming linux? Mandrake has tightened up their code such
that "modern" hardware which doesn't follow the standards is broken.
Why is that Mandrake's fault? Just because it worked in Mandrake 7.0
(which didn't have as tight timing standards / requirements) doesn't
mean that Mandrake 7.1 is broken. Just because it works fine in
Windows 2000 (which, AFAIK, still doesn't require the same HIGH
standards for hardware as "cutting edge" distributions of linux)
doesn't mean it's going to work in Mandrake 7.1 or any other version
of linux which compiles for the latest hardware.

Your misunderstanding is that since it's broken, that Mandrake has
"slipped" when in fact, they've tightened up their code even more.
It's not Mandrake's fault that your hard drive manufacturers were
too cheap or lazy to fully implement the UDMA/66 standard as it's
written. This standard, as I understand it, requires TIGHTER timing
standards and even tighter code, despite the fact that Microsoft
still insists on 8086-compatible code and the hard drive
manufacturers count on that.

Quit blaming linux and start challenging your hard drive
manufacturers to comply with the standards!

following:
0083MB MFM 3.5 X 1.6 15MS HARD DRIVE - $89 ITEM #...ST1100

*shudder* I remember MFM hard drives. Boy those were the days... had
to be sure you had an RLL hard drive with the MFM controller... or
was it an MFM hard drive with an RLL controller??? I recall that you

You *can* set up something similar to laplink using a

Yeah. I've changed the permissions on my XCDRoast such that
I can now burn CDs as a non-root user. I really HATED
having to open a console, type "xhost +localhost" and then
su to root and run xcdroast. :-) THAT was a lot of pain.
Then I got smart and made XCDRoast run SUID. :-) I did the
same thing with RDATE. I *still* can't run HWCLOCK as a
non-root user, but it's no big deal to su to root for that.
Now, installing RPMs requires me to SU, but just running
RPM queries does not. I'm glad RH fixed that in 6.2 In
RH 6.0, I was not able to run RPM queries as a non-root
user.

You CAN still "play as root." It's just a bit more
difficult. If you don't like it, install some other distro
that's "wide open" (IF you can find one!) and run it! This
is NOT just a "Mandrake" thing (not running as root) it's a
*nix thing. AFAIK, you are strongly discouraged from
running as "root" in BSD and SCO as well. Heck, even in
RedHat there is a BIG notice when you first start up as
"root" that you're running the Gnome file manager as "root"
and that it's very dangerous.

In ohter words, chill, dude! Just because Mandrake has gone
a step further and made it more difficult to break things
as root doesn't mean you've lost any freedom. You CAN
by-pass those precautions.

Ok. So Mandrake "cripples" some stuff as root to discourage you from
running as "root." They have also done so in the security levels, and
I don' t hear anyone bitching about MS-like behavior with regards to
functionality of some programs under the "high" and "paranoid"
security levels.

As is pointed out, there is good reason NOT to run as "root." Pretty
much every distro out there will prevent you from telnetting into the
box as "root" for security reasons (at least Mandrake and RedHat
will. I *think* most other distros do as well!)

I think it's a Bad Idea (tm) to cry "microsoft" anytime a linux
distribution "cripples" something for security reasons. I don't hear
anyone bitching about not being able to install RPMs as a user, yet
that's *definitely* an "I know better than you" situation of a
program being crippled.

My $0.02: Shut up and stop running as "root" unless you're actively
configuring stuff which requires "root" permissions. If you just want
to be able to install an RPM or something, open a console window, su
to root and run the rpm installer.

Stop trying to defeat the security that's inherent in linux and run
as a "user!"

Here's a suggestion: Make your Fat32 partitions with PM. Then leave
the rest of the drive unpartitioned and partition it with the
installer. It's MUCH better to let the installer partition it,
because of the quirks of the EXT2 FS. Also, if you INSIST on using
PM, at least get all the updates!

Edit your /etc/fstab with your favorite editor (note: You
*will* have to be "root" in order to do this, so I
recommend opening a console window, SU-ing to root and use
a console-based text editor.) Once you have your /etc/fstab

SCSI BIOS *not* to terminate. Since it's in the MIDDLE of

you're blocking acces to the SCANNER by terminating at the

This may be the reason. I've seen a lot of reports that the
"high" security level is TOO tight -- it won't let ANYTHING
in (remotely.) You might see if you can reduce the security
level and / or double-check the host.allow file. I know you

I had to specify the machines I wanted to let ssh into my

Is the scanner terminated? If not, then get a SCSI
terminator to put on the other "port" on the scanner. In
case you didn't know it, you MUST "terminate" both ends of
a SCSI chain. The card will terminate that end
automagically, but you MUST put a terminator on the other
end, or stuff will misbehave, such as not being detected!

Yes, it is, and yes, I've had problems as well. I can't get it to
install ANY themes. Besides which, I detest the default mouse
behavior (double-click to launch, instead of KDE's single-click) as
well as some of the keyboard stuff. For example in KDE I click CTRL+
right arrow to go to the end of the line in KMail. In Helixcode
nothing happens with that combo!

Sort of. It's now in /root/tmp, instead of /tmp. *shrug*

If it comes to it, just recompile and disable FB. ;-)

This SHOULD have gone to the KMail list, so I'm CC-ing my reply
there... :-)
Anyway, I, too, would like to see a more configurable timeout.

Not any more. It *used* to be "RedHat + enhancements." Now it's a
separate distro. However, it's about 95%+ RedHat compatible in that
RedHat rpms will work on Mandrake and vice versa.

Thanks. :-) The question was why you folks put the stuff in /tmp and
later in /root/tmp that causes X to go bad when you delete it? You
recall the hubub when 7.x came out and people started emptying their
/tmp directory only to find they had to reinstall X to get it working
again??? We recently had another case of that in here and told 'em
the sad, sad story about how you DON'T delete stuff in /tmp or
/root/tmp. :-)

I second this. While I may be more technically competent than some of
the "newbies," I recently upgraded from Mandrake 6.0 to RedHat 6.2 for
many of the same reasons you (Alan N.) list. I was happy with
Mandrake 6.0, except I wanted KDE 1.1.2 and the highest I'd been able
to upgrade it to was 1.1.1. When I tried to upgrade to 1.1.2, I
screwed the pooch and lost my X completely. What was I to do?
Reinstall. At that time, the latest release was 7.02. I didn't want
to upgrade to that because of all the "bugs" that I'd read about on
this list. So, I upgraded to RH 6.2.
When KDE2 comes out, I'll likely reformat and reinstall, salvaging my
/home directory and some other "storage" type directories. :-) I'm
expecting that KDE2 will likely come out around the end of this year,
and since Mandrake appears to offer a new version about twice a year,
a new version of Mandrake will (hopefully) be available around the
first of 2001! :-) Of course, I'll probably wait until 2nd quarter of
2001 to make sure that all the bugs are worked out, but... :-)
