[FairfieldLife] Re: How do you spell roo

2006-06-10 Thread gimari03
'Ru began as short for Guru .. referring to the TMers who came to FF when MIU
first came
to FF in 1974.

I was the first 'Ru out of FF high school.. class of 1975. MSAE/ MIU prep was
only
preschool at that time.

Roo later evolved when referring to the kangaroo hopping in the domes.

'Tater was another term that went by the wayside.

'Rubs as deragotory for the Trojans.. as in FF high school teams... came about
when there
were tensions between the 'Ru teens and the local teens in the 1980s

So, what book is coming out soon??

Thanks, Gina, I almost missed your post. Thought this thread had pretty much
played out.
I never knew about the association between Roo and hopping before. My book is
actually
out now. It is Murphy's Laws of the Inner Life. More info is available at
www.dawnhawk.com . Much of it takes place in Fairfield.

I think I remember you. Were you a midwife? Did you work at Crest Jewel? Were
you
married to a member of the Bebo band? My wife and I were friends of Mark Davis
another
Bebo member. I think my wife Susie took a some kind of birthing class from you.
If you are
that Gina, nice to hear from you. If you aren't, nice to hear from you anyway.

be happy to

Take a look at the Web site of the Publishers Marketing
Association, a nonprofit association of independent
publishers, for more on this endeavor:

interested. Costs $109 a year and worth every penny

It looks very interesting. They have some valuable marketing aids. Thanks.

I'd be interested to hear whether you're satisfied
with the final product (i.e., with what lulu.com does
for you). I'm a freelance editor, and sometimes my
writer clients want to explore self-publishing options,
so it would be nice to have a company to recommend (or
 warn folks away from, depending!)

This particular service has a very low start-up cost (free), but is for those who are
technically minded and can do the prep work themselves (layout, cover design). Unless you
have problems there is no human contact at all. It's like the ATM of publishing. It does
offers great author control. You can even make changes after the book is in print. The cost
per copy is fairly high ($4.xx plus .02 per page) It leaves room for a decent royalty as long
as people order directly from lulu or me. To go into mainstream distribution one might
want something else. There's no commitment so you can always switch to something else.
I can let you know more after I've worked with them for a while.

I very much enjoyed reading the first 11 chapters on
your Web site (which I was able to access the second
time I tried). I do have one suggestion, though: make
the margins wider so the lines of type aren't so long.
I found myself getting crosseyed after the first few
 paragraphs!

Otherwise, very nicely done. Congratulations! I
hope you have a lot of success with the book.

Thanks, Judy. I guess I should tell people that the page is dynamic in width. You can
control the column width by dragging your window narrower. At one time all web pages
were like that; now it is getting rare. I don't really expect most people to read that much
on screen. Don't know if I would. Something about the printed page that's so much more
comfortable. I know I said technology is great but I'm actually a ludite. I like the touch
and feel of real things. You're probably used to reading things on screen being an editor.

FWIW, 'oo' in 'roo' is IMO qualitatively closer to the u's in
'guru'. I guess the spelling 'ru' results to a slightly
flawed pronunciation of Sanskrit 'u' an 'uu' in the case of
most native speakers of English.

P.S. Tell us about your book.

I was going to announce it here when it was actually available, but I guess a little preview
wouldn't hurt. It would certainly appeal to people on FFL. It is called Murphy's Laws of the
Inner Life. If I weren't targeting a larger demographic, I could have called it Confessions of
an MUM Faculty Member. Hear is the blurb from the back cover:
In his 40-year quest for truth and inner peace, Michael Murphy ranges from a Roman
Catholic seminary in New York to a Shiva temple in southern India. He rises to a respected
position in an international meditation organization while living a double life in which he
explores numerous other teachers and paths. His odyssey takes him to the Swiss Alps for
training under a famous guru. He travels to a hilltop on the Pacific coast where his spirit
guides help him discover his true calling. At the foot of a holy mountain in the Rockies, a
platinum blond from Mississippi shows him the way to freedom from the prison of his
mind. Finally, on a pilgrimage to sacred Arunachala in India, he stumbles upon a portal to
the abode of joy. Through it all he struggles with one of the greatest tests (and teachers)
on the path of the seeker: living in intimate relationship with another human being.

But, this book is more than a spiritual memoir. In writing it Murphy, who has taught
writing for a decade, explores a new method for using writing itself as a technique for
self-discovery. He details this technique in his introduction and offers the rest of the book
as a model for those who wish to uncover their own deepest truth through the writing
process.

Er, no. You want the manuscript to be as letter-
perfect as possible before you send it to the
typesetter, because any changes you make in proof
(other than corrections of typesetter's errors)
cost you money.

Usually the copy editor spell-checks the ms. before
submitting it to the editor, but numerous changes
are made after that by the editor and author in
response to the copy-editor's queries, so it will
undergo at least one more spell-check before it goes
to the typesetter.

If you're still making changes a couple of weeks
before the book is to come out, it means you're
making them in final proofs or even in blues, right
before it goes to the printer/binder. (Even so,
a couple of weeks is a very short time for a book
to be printed and bound.)

That's the normal way it works, anyway. If the
book is being self-published, the schedule could
be shorter depending on how much of the work the
author is doing him/herself. Possibly this is being
self-published in digital format for download, in
which case there's no need for printing, obviously.

There are also quickie books, usually related to
some major news story, that are brought out in a
couple of weeks, but that requires a huge commitment
of resources on the part of everyone involved, lots
of overtime, etc., and typically you'll find a lot
of typos and other infelicities in the finished book
because it was done in such a rush.

Since it's an invented slang term that's highly localized,
there's no really correct way to spell it. You get to
spell it the way you think best. If it were ever to become
widespread (unlikely!), a consensus would gradually
emerge on one spelling, but until then it's up to you.

I think I'd go with 'ru, myself. But the suggestion that
you check with the Fairfield Ledger is a good one; its
spelling will be familiar, at least, to Fairfielders and
many TMers who follow the doings in Fairfield.

I am working with an on demand self-publishing system at lulu.com. You upload the final
layout in Word along with JPGs for the cover. A trade paperback can be ordered within
minutes. I am currently going over the proofread version. As soon as I am done and
upload it, the paperback or PDF will be available. On demand printing is more expensive
but requires less upfront expense. If a book starts to sell well one can alway change to
traditional printing. Isn't technology amazing?

You bet it is, and good for you for taking advantage
of it and following through. It's a lot of work.

I'd be interested to hear whether you're satisfied
with the final product (i.e., with what lulu.com does
for you). I'm a freelance editor, and sometimes my
writer clients want to explore self-publishing options,
so it would be nice to have a company to recommend (or
warn folks away from, depending!).

Self-puplishing has been around for a long time. I worked briefly for
one almost 30 years ago. Its a centuries old tradition. In prior eras,
while with self-publishing, editing and desgin could be handled
in-house without too much difficulty, distribution and marketing were
much larger hurdles.

Now with the advent of Amazon (plus e-books, and MP3 versions
distributed over the web), the huge wall of and distribution -- and to
some extent marketing -- has been reduced to scalable size. With this,
I have wondered why there is not a larger move to self-publishing.

I suspect in self-publishing the two major remaining issues are
marketing and financing. Simply having a well-designed, edited and
written inventory of books, and a global distributions system, with
some strong passive marketing (that is, it can be found by someone
searching the topic area), does not in itself produce strong sales.
Strong marketing is still needed -- and thats something publishers can
(at times) do well. And publishers can pay advances -- lack of
salary being a hurdle for full-time writers -- particularly those
that have a lot of research required to write their books.

Any thoughts other obstacles, and how technolgy, social nets, etc. may
reduce them as barriers? For example Bands and performers are making
huge strides using MySpace and other social networks to develop a core
of fans and listeners -- and generate word of mouth. I suppose MySpace
or similar social nets could create an author friendly venue like it
has done for bands. Amazon has done such to a degree, absent the
networking aspect of Myspace.

Such a new author-promoting venue could include: i)well laid out,
large excerpts of the authors work (unlike the klunky amazon
excerpts), ii) sophisticated search of mutli-dimensional
cross-indexing of the topic matter so new readers could find the
excerpts of interest, easily, iii) one-click sending of recommended
material to friends network, iv) regular venue-wide best of category
displays of works (lead-ins) on the venue's home page, v) video and
audio clip interviews with the author, vi) reader reviews and author
comments on such, vii) external reviews, viii) author bio, pics, ix)
links to the book at amazon and other distributor sites, x) to
increase social networking, strong search for friends capabilities
which includes preferences for general types of works, specific
authors, locations, etc.

As a quick aside, in its anyone-with-talent-can-do-it spirit,
current self-publishing seems somewhat parallel to bloggers who use
Adsense for revenue, garage bands producing their own CDs and MP3s and
marketing/distributing them on the net, and more roughly applicable --
indie film making -- particualarly the you.tube pathway.

The move to self-publishing is *huge*. Also on the rise
is independent publishing, i.e., smaller publishers not
owned by larger companies. Some have been formed to
publish and market a single book, often written by the
publisher, so the line between independent publishers
and self-publishers can get a bit fuzzy.

Take a look at the Web site of the Publishers Marketing
Association, a nonprofit association of independent
publishers, for more on this endeavor:

http://pma-online.org

Michael--you could become a member of PMA if you were
interested. Costs $109 a year and worth every penny
for the support and advice and expertise.

(Full disclosure: I copy edit PMA's newsletter.)

Any thoughts other obstacles, and how technolgy, social nets, etc.

One thing you haven't mentioned is Web sites promoting
self-published books. This is another growing trend.
In many cases the book is sold through the Web site, as
I assume Michael is planning to do.

The marketing efforts of self- and independent
publishers are quite ingenious, taking advantage
of many avenues mainstream publishers don't
generally bother with.

Somebody told me years ago that "ru's" was interchangeable

The science fiction writers of america (forget the official name/acronym) have a website with
advice to authors that includes a rather complete discussion of self/electronic publishing. Did
some research on the subject for a friend a while back. Might have been Anoop Chandola,
but not sure.
