Treatment in Texas
Hi, I have been away for awhile, but I did see this post.. My Bandy goes to the Animal Diagnostic Clinic in Dallas..Dr. Susan O'Neal an internal med specialist...I highly recommend her or anyone of their group..They are in the Veterinary Referral Center off the tollway and Trinity Mills..You have to be referred. They also have an office in Plano and Mesquite.. I recently used another internal med spec for my dog in Irving at the O'connor exit at the emergency 24 hr hospital..Dr. Scroggins..That was my first trip there, but it was a very good place..If you need the numbers, please let me know... hope this helps, Kerry and Bandy __Do You Yahoo!?Tired of spam? To Karen
Karen, I buy L-lysine from my local health food store in gelcaps (500 mg each) and open the gel cap and empty the powder into the food. It's not as cheap as buying online, but I don't have to measure each time like I would if I were to use the straight powder. Make sure there is no propynol glycol in the lysine. :) Wendy --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Anyone know where I can purchase lysine in powder form? I am so tired of grinding up pills. Chester
Good Morning Guys, Thank you for all the great advice and support. I really appreciate it. It's great that there is a place were we can turn to. Okay so I listened to you all-we have an appointment with ANOTHER doctor tonight. I am getting my other cat, Timmy retested (need your prayers on this one). And Chester is going so that he can be tested for anemia. I talked to the new doctor on the phone last night (which is a service that my current doctor did not perform) and she seems to think that Chester has a chance since he is eating. She thinks maybe I got him in early enought. She will try to treat symtoms and then retest in 6-8 weeks (hoping for a false positive). After talking to all of you I realized that there is hope and no need to call it quits yet. She said that the Baytril is a little harsh on stomach but is okay in small strength (however, she said that she wouldn't chose this med first). Said that Prednisone does hinder immune system a little but for him to still take it. Hopefully she'll get a better idea when she sees him tonight maybe she can switch meds. What do you think about Vitamin C to boost immune system? Anyone ever try it? I got a natural remedies book for cats. Not sure about all these meds, I have a hard time believing that all of these drugs are good for the animals. Does anyone live in Ohio? Will write back tonight. Have a good day, Lisa -- WOW! Bandy and the ringworm
Hi everyone, We have been away for awhile, just too much going on with this ringworm and work...it is all I can do to tend to all of that... I am sorry for the losses some of you have had recently...you are always in our thoughts and prayers... Anyway, bandy's entire face has ringworm on it and I have used almost the whole bottle of conofite...they said I am going to have to give him the fulvicin to get rid of it..I just hate that, but I may have no other choice. The eye drops with the pred in them are keeping it from going away faster..or that is what his eye spec said would happen..I try to keep it off the best I can with cotton balls then put the topical meds for the ringworm on there last with some other eye ointment to keep down infection..Inky (my 19yr old) had it, too, but I his has healed ok as it was on his back..and the hair has already come back...But Bandy is miserable...He has hurt his leg again due to climbing I guess..He is eating good and fever seems to be about the same..he gets that about every 7 to 9 days..so I still give him 1/2 dex pill...and it goes away.. I forgot to mentiion I think a few weeks ago, we did a complete blood panel on Bandy and it was the first one since last Aug...His PCV was 30.4...so something must be working for that...he is making rbc so that is a positive thing for sure... His eyes are clear and he can see some...the pupils don't move...they are stuck in a fixed position, but as long as he is on the pred drops, he should be able to see some.. He is eating good and playing some.. I still give him lysine from the pill on each meal with some folic acid and bovine colostrum...also Co Q10...He is on interferon same as since last Aug. and 1/2 cc baytril. Please let me know if there is anything else I can try for the ringworm. I put some goldenseal on it too...I just don't know what else to do..I feel so bad for him as I know he hates all the meds for the ringworm.. Bandy's treatment for fever
I am trying to catch up and saw a post about someone with an FIV and Felv+ with high fever..Bandy has both and we have been dealing with high fever for a year this month...I can just tell now when it is going up..so I give him 1/2 of .75mg. dexamethasone pill..and if that doesn't bring it down within 3 or 4 hours i give the other 1/2...it will usually bring it down...then it will go back up again within a wk or 8 or 9 days...He is also on oral interferon daily since last July...It all seems to be working for him...The fever, they tell me is due to inflammation from his diseases...so I still don't know...He always feels better within a few hours of giving the dex...also an injection will work much faster, but is alot stronger...and we save them for when it is really high or he is having other problems with his leg...or soreness from his past broken leg. hope this helps, Kerry and Bandy __Do You Yahoo!?Tired of spam? Hi Lisa, My name is Wendy. I am sorry to hear that your kitty is sick right now. Good for you for looking for another vet! I think that vets that will speak with you on the phone are at least worth a visit. And those who won't, well... I am sending you a sick kitty manual with lots of info. in it in another email (the list won't allow attachments). If you have time, check over it before you go in tonight. It might have something in it your vet might use. I have never used vitamin C with my kitties before, only because I didn't know about it. If I had another with FeLV, I would most definitely put them on it based on the research and posts that others have made. Also, get some L-lysine. It's great for the immune system. Just make sure that it does not contain propynol glycol which does something to kitty's blood; make sure it's pure lysine. Please let us know what the vet says tonight. Prayers going out for your furbabies. :) Wendy Dallas, Tx __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com

Janine, I don't know. That's a judgement call to make for sure and depends on your ultimate goal. If the goal is adoption, I think at such a young age, they are probably not so attached just yet and separating them might give the negative a better chance at being adopted. Just my two cents. :) Wendy __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com

When I use the golden seal, I put it on every day. The kind without alcohol, can go on the face too. The nutritional support sounds good - the colostrum and interferon etc. I was just looking at some other alternative stuff for one of my kitties, and found this, which mentions ringworm - I didn't know this kind of stuff was anti-fungal too - http://www.nzymes.com/ product_blackleaf_black_walnut_olive_leaf_tincture.htm I've also been told to use 1/4 of a Program tablet with cats, for ringworm. Good luck. Re: 2 littermates - one pos/one neg
I didn't catch the beginning of this thread, but have a recent experience I thought I'd share regarding pos/neg littermates. We've been knee deep in a hoarder situation involving a high percentage of their cats being FeLV+. One of the females who had a litter of 5 tested negative on both ELISA and IFA. When I had her 12 week old litter tested, 3 were positive and 2 were negative. We didn't get the mother pulled before she got pregnant yet again, but she is now in foster care. I vaccinated the 2 negatives with the FeLV vaccine and allowed them to housed together, though separate from the rest of the foster population at my home for space reasons. I didn't have another area to separate the 3 positives and refuse to cage healthy active kittens. The 3 positives found a wonderful home together and I just recently adopted out the 2 negatives at 16 weeks. I tested on IFA the 2 negatives again prior to adoption since they had been with their positive littermates since the virus was contracted. They again tested negative. If only we could pinpoint what gives some cats such amazing immunity? The mother and the 2 negatives seem to just have it. The mother cat was in the home for 4 years with symptomatic positive cats, many whom died from the disease. There is no doubt in my mind that even unvaccinated she will never contract the disease due to her strong immunity. I have to agree with Belinda, and would keep them together for their emotional health, which we all know plays a huge part in immune strength. I would as a precaution vaccinate the negative though. Best of luck! Re: new to FeLV
If you're into conventional medicine, talk to the vet about trying Flagyl for 5-7 days. It's been working nicely for me, with some cats I have. I've also ordered an herbal liquid with the thought that it might help intestinal parasites. I've also used food formulas that included brown rice (fiber) and that helped. To really get into the food making for diarrhea, Dr. Pitcairn's book has a great recipe. He came home from the vets with a little respiratory issue but we cleared that right up with amoxi. He was just as full of worms as a cat can get, so we've treated him for that but now the diarrhea is really bad and I cannot seem to get if firmed up. He is on Natural Balance, I would like to get him onto raw. This boy has not really shown any signs of illness other then what I've mentioned, and the vet seems to think that his health is not really too bad. I guess I don't know my options and my vet just says that he will do whatever I want but I need more options then death by lethal injection or bring home to watch die. Help! Roxane __ Do You Yahoo!? Re: OT - Flower Essences
Belinda, We were referring to an Australian Bush Flower Essence called "Emergency". I got mine from Earth Spirits, http://www.earthspirits-herbals.com/ a distributor for them in, I think it's in MA. I just sent my latest little foster dog off with my husband for a plane ride to NJ to her new forever home :( . I tried not to get upset, I thought I hid it pretty well, but another little dog in our household, Angel, was so upset, she was shaking. I used the EE on her ears transdermally, and she calmed right down. Now, I can't say it's the EE, or my reassurance, but she did settle down right after I put it on her ears. I'll go take some myself and let you know if it helps me! Nina Belinda wrote: What is EE, I just ordered the RR creme and am curious about this EE?

Oh Hideyo, you know my thoughts and prayers are always with you and your babies. How is Hannibal doing this morning? Is he frightened? How's his blood pressure now? Let us know how he's doing as soon as you can. Many prayers that his sight is back to normal already, or at least very soon. Re: Chester and location of members map
Hi Lisa, I'm glad you and Chester found another vet. It's a good sign that she talked to you and gave you advice over the phone. Did you ask her if she's ever treated felv kitties before? I'm assuming that the new vet is a regular GP type too. You might want to ask her when you see her who she recommends in special circumstances, (most vets have a specialty clinic that they send patients to for tests/treatment they can't or don't provide). I would make an appointment with an Internist so that Chester is their patient too, that way if you need them in an emergency, they will be familiar with his case. Also there are meds that the GP won't have, (my reg vet doesn't have Interferon A, for instance), that the Internist will. I had my kitties on Vita C and Lysine among other sups. When anyone isn't feeling well, I'll give them Transfer Factor, (stress formula), you'll find info about it in the archives. I hate giving my fur kids meds too, but what are you going to do? We have special needs kids and sometimes they need them. Do your research on anything prescribed so you know potential side effects etc. I like that your new vet wouldn't have prescribed Baytril right off. Baytril is a stronger, broader spectrum abx, (usually they start off with Clavomox, or Amoxi first), that's seems a good sign. It depends on what their symptoms are and what they suspect they are fighting. What dose of Pred did Chester's old vet put him on? Remember with Pred, you have to taper them off, you shouldn't just stop giving it to them abruptly. I'm not in Ohio, but I seem to remember someone on the list is. Here's a map with some of our locations on it: http://www.frappr.com/felvtalk/ Prayers for you and Chester, Nina [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Good Morning Guys, Thank you for all the great advice and support. Kerry, It's good to hear from you. I was just thinking about you and Bandy and all your babies. I'm so sorry to hear Bandy hasn't kicked the darn ringworm yet, poor baby, (and poor you!). I'm glad he's eating, but sorry to hear you guys haven't kicked those fevers yet. Hooray that his blood count was better! It's such a roller coaster ride, isn't it? You're such a good mom. Janine, I agree with Belinda and Rachel. I would keep them together, for both their sakes. Poor little lambs have been through so much already. Have you been reading the posts lately? We just had a kitten on the list apparently turn out to be a false pos. I know it's less likely in your case, given that other members of the colony are testing pos too, but your little boy is only 7 weeks and may very well be testing pos because of his mother's antibodies still. Whatever you decide, I know that you have their best interest at heart. Still, I'm praying that they can be kept together and adopted out to someone that cares as much as we do for their quality of life. Re: Need prayers for my Hannibal -getting blind
Hideyo, I wish you would cut it out with blaming yourself for things that are beyond your control. The only way that any of this is at all your "fault" is that you gave Hannibal the opportunity to live long enough to make it to this stage in his life. You and Hannibal have a special relationship, he knows, (better than you apparently), that everything you do for him and all those in your care, is done out of love and concern. I know how hard you try to limit medications with side effects, how important it is to you to try "alternative" type methods that are less harsh on their bodies and spirits. There is no way for you to know that rushing him to the vet sooner would have changed what's going on. You make yourself crazy with this type of logic. You don't want to stress him out unnecessarily with vet visits, and when you don't rush him in, when all you were trying to do was make his life less stressful, you "feel awful" for not being psychic enough to know that it may have been better if you did. How in the world could you be more "careful"? You're already the most caring human I know! It won't do you or your babies any good to beat yourself up, you can't change the past anymore than you can predict the future. Right now is all you have, please shake off this feeling of guilt and go from here. Keep making the best decisions you can, decisions based in the best intentions, one moment to the next, one decision to the next. That's all any of us can do. Re: 2 littermates - one pos/one neg
Thank you all! I would prefer they stay together also and will try to talk the woman who trapped the mom into that. Our vet thinks we should separate the kittens from the mom now, but I am wondering if the negative kitten is immune anyway. How much more prolonged contact can you get than birth and motherhood in a crate??? BTW, the mom had 5 kittens - one stillborn, 2 died within a week. I suppose that could be leukemia but could have been the tremendous amount of stress that mom must have been under. --- Nina [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Janine, I agree with Belinda and Rachel. RE: 2 littermates - one pos/one neg
That feels very right on a psycho-spiritual level. Many years ago I had two cousins who had been raised as siblings. When their surrogate mother passed away at almost 18 years of age my vet offered to do a free necropsy tofind out why her response to antibiotics had been so poor. She was both FIV+ and FeLV+ and she had actually produced milk and nursed these two cousins. Before we tested I had already descided that no matter the results I would not separate them. Both were negative and remains so throughout very long lives. So I never had to face some crisis of faith.Ah, but that story relates to my experience with my personal cats. I get the impression that the original poster is a rescue/foster person who may not be able or inclined to adopt these two siblings. If that is the case, as a rescue, I would seriously consider splitting them up and getting the negative kitten into a godd forever home. I've split up littermates and been very happy with the homes they got, and I have delayed breaking up what I considered to be a bonded pair often to the detriment of one of the kittens. (Today I listed an orange teenager for adoption. He's 9 months old and an absolute love. I had been listing him with his sister, a pretty yet still semi-feral calico, for the longest while. How long can I deny him access to his own home when I know his sister may never really tame up enough?)If you can keep both positive and negative kitten, great. But if these kittens need to be on track for adoption, list them for adoption separately and together. If they are meant to be together they will be adopted together. But we really can't assume that. Give them every option to find their own way.Hideyo Yamamoto [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I agree with everyone --- I try not to let the test result completelydetermine how their life is going to be if it may not make sense to do..they are gifted to this world as litter mates for a reason...and thatmeans they should be raised together..-Original Message-From: [EMAIL PROTECTED][mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of NinSent: Wednesday, June 14, 2006 1:56 PMTo: felvtalk@felineleukemia.orgSubject: Re: 2 littermates - one pos/one negJanine,I agree with Belinda and Rachel. Alice's IFA positive
Hi everyone, The IFA came back positive on Alice today. What a stinking shame. She spent yesterday evening snuggled on my shoulder while I sat out back on the glider reading. I have contacted a local rescue for help in re-homing her. I also posted her (with picture) in the FeLV+ ads at this list's home site. The 4 others will live in our bedroom until they are retested in a couple of months. I know this may make it harder to adopt them out at an older age, but I hate to risk inflicting this horrible disease on some other innocent household. Even if we can just find homes for one or two, I think I have my dear, patient hubbyconvinced to keep the rest. I'll keep checkingback here for info.that will help us care for Allyuntil she's resettled, and keep praying foryour dear furbabies. This list is a wonderful thing to calm the panic of that first diagnosis. Thank you all so much, Beth [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: 2 littermates - one pos/one neg
It is tough when you are not in the position of being able to keep them yourself, (and who in rescue, besides Hideyo, can keep doing that?). We have a couple of foster Chow/Husky littermates at our house. I was determined to keep them together too. They are so bonded, (together they are outgoing and social, take one out without the other, and they are introverted and insecure). They've been with us for months and I finally told Bruce that we might have to consider separate homes for them. He looked at me and with a pout on his face as he said, They are home. I guess they are. As I just wrote earlier, I sent my little Chiu/Terrier rescue, (Pequita, all of 7lbs soaking wet) off this morning to her forever home. She was a nasty little cur when she showed up at my door and has turned into such a sweet, trusting girl, always doing her best to understand and please. It's so hard to part with any of them. Can you tell I bonded to her as much as she did to me? (BTW, Belinda, the EE did help me!). Something about these two kittens... The fact that they are only 7 weeks old and have come from a feral mom, have been crated together through what must have been a terrifying experience for them, I don't know... I understand the hard decisions that have to be made, but I'm still praying there is a way to keep them together. Maybe I don't belong in rescue, but I still can't help leading with my heart. Re: Bandy and the ringworm
the program does not workfor ringworm. all 8 here had it over the holidays and after a month of no results we useda spray and shampoo made by malaseb. for the face you use the spray on a cloth and wipe on their face. unfortunatly the spores can live in the house for up to 18 months. (so they can reinfect durring that time) theres some informative websites out there on cleanup in the house ect. i know what your going through ! i bathed 8 twice a week ! the spray alone may help. if you want to try it out i can mail you a bottle. (have a couple left from our bout with ringworm) karen When I use the golden seal, I put it on every day. The kind without alcohol, can go on the face too. Stillborn kitties are common in FeLV+ mothers. :) Wendy --- janine paton [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Thank you all! As an organization, we had a pair of littermates testing the same as these 2, and we let them stay together. The positive cat died at around 3 yrs, the negative cat is still negative (and has recently been adopted!) so it's not entirely new to me but what's the best thing to do? RE: 2 littermates - one pos/one neg
It's a difficult decision.. cats are a lot more complicated than dogs due to all the virus related illness.. there are lot of more things to consider whether we need to keep them together or separate which you really won't have to worry about at all for medical reasons most of the time... I am speaking of psycho-spiritual level totally.. I have two felk kitties who are asymptomatic and I am so grateful.. and I have CRF kitty whom I am trying to do everything I can to take care of... you just don't know with kitties.. positive may become negative and negative becomes positive.. I am experiencing this all the time with FIV virus.. and I just stopped putting the test result at the top of the priority.. negative does not guarantee anything as feline have so many complicated other illness.. and positive also does not mean death sentence --- for the same reason, you will not separate kitties who have lived together for years if you just find out if one is positive.. I would not separate these two.. they need each other.. again, that's me --- I have done some things totally based on the test result one time.. and I ended up regretting for the rest of my life.. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Nina Sent: Wednesday, June 14, 2006 3:47 PM To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: Re: 2 littermates - one pos/one neg It is tough when you are not in the position of being able to keep them yourself, (and who in rescue, besides Hideyo, can keep doing that?).
Actually, I am almost positive that someone said a long time ago that the Immuno-regulin helped her cat kick ringworm. I think ringworm gets more of a hold when cats have suppressed immune symptoms, like with FeLV, and the I-R gives the immune system a quick boost to help fight it. Maybe it would help the fever at the same time. Michelle

Yes, if the anemia is caused by lymphoma, leukemia the cancer, or an auto-immune response, steroids are one of the best things to use and are actually necessary. Hideyo, Stop it!!! It's not your fault!!! Remember, he can feel your vibrations and you being upset. Nina is right you have given him more than he would have! Re: Bandy and the ringworm
I agree, the ringworm could be so bad in his case due to immune system issues. I'd definitely do anything I could to boost his immune system. I didn't see vitamin C on your list of things you're feeding him. I have NO idea if this is safe for sick cats or not (or if it might do anything to his eye issues), so ask around, BUT, I cured more than one dog of severe flea allergy (oozing, bleeding, open, scabby, nasty looking skin) with supplementing MSM. It seems to have some unknown anti-inflammatory properties. I know it's safe for dogs, horses, and if labeled for cats, healthy cats, not sure about cats with immune problems like FELV and/or FIV. I can assure you it CAN work miracles in some cases, I have seen it myself, for dogs with flea dermatitis, and for arthritic horses. FosterSmith.com sells a few kinds labeled for use in cats. In fact, I used it on Bones for a while (it is also wonderful for arthritis) for her back problems. It wont cure the ringworm, but it may help with much of the inflammation he's getting because of it. And who knows, it might help his eye and fever. Do check with your vet though, to be sure it wont interact badly with his other meds. Poor guy, he's had it bad for quite some time now! Re: new to FeLV
a week and a half is way too soon to expect good stools from a cat that infested with worms. keep in mind, worms physically damage the lining of the intestine, and he could be pretty badly messed up inside. give him at least a month or two before you even expect to see normal stools. also, if he's only been with you that long, he's probably still adapting from the food switch (i'm sure he wasn't eating what you have him on now when he was a stray). it takes time for a cat's digestive system to stabilize after diet changes... even cats without worms, but in his case, even more so. Re: Advice Needed
Yes, Revolution almost killed Michelle's Bramble (I think he was FIV+ FELV-, but that doesn't make much difference - the stuff is TOXIC). She lives overseas, so it is called something else there, and didn't have the correct warning labels on it. Not for use in sick, underweight, or debilitated cats. We worked VERY hard to get it re-labeled overseas, and now it DOES carry the correct warnings! I wont use it at all, period. ANYTHING that SOAKS THROUGH their SKIN and kills intestinal worms is WAY too scary for me to put on my cats! Read the labels, if they say in bold print, wash hands after use, use in well ventilated area, wear gloves, call the poison control center if you get it in your eyes or breathe the vapors, or anything like that, doesn't that make you stop and think? If YOU have to be so careful to NOT let it touch YOUR skin, then WHY would you put it on your cat? I wont use anything on them that I wont use on myself... that's my rule of thumb. The cat shampoo is wonderful stuff... BTW, smells wonderful, and doesn't leave your hair all stripped and frizzy. :) Phaewryn PLEASE Adopt a cat from Little Cheetah Cat Rescue!!!http://ucat.us/adopt.html DONATE: We could really use a power saw (for construction), a digital camera (for pictures) and HOMES for CATS!
