another prayer for Dharma - Naomi's sister

Hi, everyone, I need to ask you to pray for my beautiful
calico girl, Dharma – Dharma is Naomi’s sister who passed away a
couple of months ago a couple of months ago from dry form of FIP.  She was
only 4 months old.. Dharma acted like a big sister of Naomi and taking care of
her when Naomi was not feeling well.. since Then, I lost my beloved boy, Peter
who was about 1.5 year old to dry FIP, a week after Naomi crossed the bridge.

I have during the past few weeks noticed that Dharma has
been less active (but she still acts and eats just fine).. and has some fever
on and off with URIs.. and also noticed that her eye pupil size were
different.. that’s very similar to what happened to my Naomi and I took
her to the vet.. her TP was very high as 9 and her PCV was low 23.. again
that’s what happened to Naomi and Peter.. and she had a fever of 103.5 –

Looking at this, there is a good chance that Dharma has what
Peter and Naomi had.. FIP which is fetal viral disease which will kill cats
very quickly.. Dharma is not showing any serious symptoms and I am going t to
start her on interferon tomorrow (thanks, Nina for sending it to me again) once
we get her total body function blood work.

After the vet’s visit today, I got sick to my stomach
thinking how I am going to deal with it..but I know I need to… and I
cried for about 30 mins.. and I am sure that I will cry again sometime..but
right now..I need to fight with Dharma whatever she is fighting against (which
Naomi may not be aware of.. as she does not act very sick at all.. just
subtleness like Naomi did).. please pray that Dharma will recover whatever she
has and she will live with us happily ever after for a long time…

Thank you!

Barb, I hope Little Lady indeed belongs to someone near you, or
that you at least see her again well enough to make sure she's okay.  Those
kind of situations haunt me too.  One very cold night, Gail and I were
driving home from the library, and we saw a little cat dart across the lane into
some bushes.  We tried calling to it, but of course it never came, and we
worried about it all night.  There are houses a couple blocks from where it
was, so I hope it belonged to one of them.

I don't know. They certainly check T cell counts on human AIDS patients.
They define the difference between being HIV+ and having full-blown AIDS by the
number of T cells you have left, I think.  I never heard of a cat getting a
T cell count, but maybe they can.  Never heard of a B cell count at
all.

called to cancel my appointment today and send the message about my
disappointment that the vet was unwilling to discuss things over the
phone.  They put me on hold and the vet came on with apologies for the
misunderstanding.  She said she had some blunt advice for me and thought
it better to discuss it in person.  Of course her "blunt" advice was no
worse than the conclusions I'd already come to on my own.  They do, as
does Michelle, suspect strongly that he has lymphoma.  They are still
hesitant to treat for it without further confirmation, but I got the distinct
impression that if I insisted, they would.  Both doctors feel that
aggressive cancer treatment would, at best, buy him limited time, and disrupt
the quality of life he is experiencing now.  She said that she has, in
cases like this, tapered the steroid dose, (after initial daily dosing), to
eod in an attempt to avoid prolonged use reactions.  Unfortunately, the
result in these cases is usually the same, the cat crashes and there's no way
to tell if it's a result of prolonged steroid use, the tapering of the
steroid, or the lymphoma itself.  Nasty business this. So, even
with discussing things over with the vet, my decision made this morning stands
for now.  I wish there were some way to make Spencer "all better", since
that doesn't appear to be possible, (at least not without Divine Intervention,
and I don't need a vet for that), I will make the time he has the best quality
  that I can.NinaNina wrote:
  Hello
Everyone,That was my first reaction too.  I even said to the vet's
assistant that I needed my answers BEFORE I brought Spencer in again.
It was her suggestion to bring him anyway.  Let me clarify something
...  The doctor that is insisting on the consultation in person is not
my regular internist.  She got on the case because when Spencer was
failing, my regular vet was not on duty and I wanted him seen asap.
I've been tip toeing around trying not to offend this woman, she has been
pretty good for the most part and I figured three heads were better than
two.I've been thinking long and hard about all this, as you can
imagine.  I have been talking to Spencer, doing my best to make a
decision based on everyone's best interests.  The pressure to decide
quickly (given that remission is more likely in the beginning stages of
cancer), has made it all the more difficult to think clearly.  I'm
disappointed that the vet won't discuss things over the phone and I don't
have enough history with her to assume she's right in insisting that I come
in there.  Perhaps she's just tired of trying to discuss things with me
over the phone and through a third party.  (Every answer she gives me
prompts two or three more questions).Looking at Spencer, seeing the
burst of quality life the steroid shots have given him, suspecting that
putting him through the tests, office visits and treatments, will at best
buy him more time, but not necessarily QUALITY time...  I'm having a
hard time making my decision final by writing to all of you about it, but I
am very close to deciding to stop all hope of a medical intervention miracle
and just enjoy the time we have together as things stand.  That doesn't
mean that I'll ever give up hope that Spencer will somehow miraculously
rally, that by some chance he doesn't have cancer at all, it's all a big
mistake and he'll just continue to improve and get well.  I have,
however, been around this disease long enough to recognize the sounding of
the closing bell when I hear it.  I can't tell you the number of times
my heart has sank reading posts on this list from kitty guardians with the
same symptoms that Spencer has presented. I was discussing with my
sister yesterday about how reluctant I am to put Spencer through any more
stress.  About how even if we did get a definitive diagnosis of a
specific cancer, I'm not at all sure I'd want to treat him for it.
Something my sister said has been echoing through my mind...  She said,
it seemed to her that putting Spencer through a battery of tests with the
HOPE, (not the suspicion), of it being something curable, was not reason
enough to disturb what may very well be his last days.   I've
always been grateful when one of my loved ones has had good final days with
a quick and peaceful passing.  Buying more time with Spencer, if that's
even possible, does not seem worth the cost.I just got a call from
Hideyo.  Hideyo reminded me that animals live in the NOW.  Taking

There are two kinds of immune cells, B
cells and T cells. B cells are the killer cells which kill foreign invading
bodies like viruses and bacteria, and which sometimes go wild and attack the
body itself, which is called an auto-immune reaction.  T cells control the
B cells, causing them to multiply or slow down as needed.  When there is
an auto-immune reaction, it means the B cells are out of control going wild,
and that the T cells are not controlling them, probably because the T cells are
low.  When people have AIDS, they have low T cell counts.  Most
immune boosters support T cells, not B cells.  I think that interferon
supports T cells, or is supposed to. So even if you are giving steroids, which
suppress B cells (and maybe T cells too, I don't know), you still want to
support T cells, because those help keep the immune system in the right
balance.

Does that make sense?  The vet who
wrote the I-R article on the web page, Dr. Mike Lees in Ohio, told me that he uses I-R combined with
steroids when steroids seem necessary, because he believes that I-R supports T
cell function rather than B cell proliferation.

Hi Kerry,
Did you ever check out the off-brand "At Ease"? It's made by Natur Vet

Re: Welcome Beatrix!

2006-09-15 Thread Nina
Good news indeed. Hello and welcome Beatrix!! If she's up to playfully
biting your nose it sounds like she's already feeling at home and hasn't
been traumatized by her rough start in life. Give her a nuzzle for me
and a head bump to Satch.

N

Leslie wrote:

Good news, good news, I have good news!

My vet gave the okay yesterday on bringing a new cat home - he said
that Satch wasn't contagious and prescribed another symptomatic
medecine for his cough. So I ran tout suite to the humane society and
brought home the first leukemia kitten (sister to Azrael) whom I've
name Beatrix. I'll reattach the link to her on the humane society
page, but they didn't put up a new picture and that one is probably 6
weeks old. So she's much bigger, but the description holds true.

http://www.oregonhumane.org/cats/detail.asp?animalID=45154

I'm keeping my paws firmly crossed that her week quarantine develops
no new URI's in her and that Satch's cough goes away completely even
if he's not contagious. These two are going to LOVE each other. She
is everywhere and she bites my nose, just like Satch does.
(hopefully, they'll begin biting each other's noses and leave mine out
of it!) She's fabulous and I'm so excited.

Please cross your paws that they can be introduced in a week and that
nothing delays the meeting!

Re: ot - prayers please

2006-09-15 Thread Nina

Barb,
Since you spotted her in your apt complex parking lot, and she's not
underweight, (kind of hard to tell if she's long haired), she may very
well have a home. Most of my cats wouldn't let a stranger approach
them either. Let's pray that someone is looking after her. I'd still
bring a dish of tuna out there every night around the time you spotted
her and try and make friends. Do you have kids in your building? They
generally know more about the neighborhood pets, maybe you can ask
around and see if anyone knows her. If you could snap a picture of her,
you could put up photo fliers and ask for information about her. Sort
of a "not quite found" poster :). It's amazing the lengths I'll go to
to try and sleep at night.

I don't want to scare you, but two of the kitties from
the hyper-T group I belong to were diagnosed with lung
cancer. One passed last week and the other was just
diagnosed. They both were originally diagnosed with
asthma, so you might want to look into this. I hope
it's just asthma though. Prayers going out to little

Good news, good news, I have
good news!

My vet gave the okay yesterday on bringing a new cat home - he said that
Satch wasn't contagious and prescribed another symptomatic medecine for
his cough.  So I ran tout suite to the humane society and brought
home the first leukemia kitten (sister to Azrael) whom I've name
Beatrix.  I'll reattach the link to her on the humane society page,
but they didn't put up a new picture and that one is probably 6 weeks
old.  So she's much bigger, but the description holds true.

I'm keeping my paws firmly crossed that her week quarantine develops no
new URI's in her and that Satch's cough goes away completely even if he's
not contagious.  These two are going to LOVE each other.  She
is everywhere and she bites my nose, just like Satch does.
(hopefully, they'll begin biting each other's noses and leave mine out of
it!)  She's fabulous and I'm so excited.

Please cross your paws that they can be introduced in a week and that
nothing delays the meeting!

Has he been checked for asthma, I know cats get this and breathing

Re: ot - prayers please

2006-09-15 Thread Nina

Barb,
It's the worst to know they're out there, to know they're receptive to
human attention, but to not be able to just go over and scoop them up
and give them aid! Could you tell what was causing the limp? At least
she wasn't dragging it. I had a feral start limping one day, of course
I was beside myself with worry for him. Those of us who care for the
"wild" ones know that any infirmity can be very dangerous. I spoke to
an AC about him and she told me he had a burr stuck in his paw pad.
Sure enough, I watched the next night as he chewed on the underside of
his foot trying to extricate it. Within a couple of nights his limp had
disappeared. I'm praying that's what's going on with your little Lady
friend.

I'm not clear on the location you spotted her. Is the parking area near
the school, or your home? Is there any way to try and trap her? If you
start putting out food do you think she might go into a regular trap?
I've come to swear by drop traps for the hard to get guys. They work
like magic. You might remember my sad story about Ceasar. I tried
forever to get him, but no matter what I tried, he was too wily. When
he was so disparately ill, I borrowed a drop trap and had him within 10
minutes! I'm sure you are as overwhelmed as the rest of us with your
rescue efforts, but is there any way to visit that spot at the same time
each night? These situations haunt me too. The only way I can let go
of them is when I know I've done everything I can think of to help.

Please let us know if there are any further developments with Lady. You
are both in my prayers,

Nina

Belinda,
Could Little Lady be added to the prayer list? When I got home from
class last night there was a pretty little white and buff kitty
sitting in the grassy median between the parking lot sections and she
wouldn't let me near her, but she sat about 20' away and we had a
conversation for several minutes - I can do meows and chirps very well
as Bandit and I have little talks too. She was very attentive when I
chirped, but she was clearly not letting me near her - she walked away
with a pronounced limp and I was sad all night - but we can only do
what they let us do, if that much

Thanks a bunch
