Re: Update on Tomi, and my older kitty, Koda

I am very lucky to have a monument company in town (headstones etc) that will
sandblast names into stones. There are portable machines (re marking date of
deaths in pre-need stones). I can't tell you anything about prices since it
varies so much from area to area. It sounds like Koda has a wonderful place
for her body. Remember her heart is still with you and will be as long as you
want it to be. She is so grateful to have left this world at home instead of
at the vet's. She really didn't like that place at all. Much too cold for
her. She sends her love and says she will send you a sign that is ok and
happy. She had 12 wonderful years and thanks you for them.

  Thank you all.

Well, Koda didn't make it through the night. We had a heating pad for her
wrapped in flannel sheets. I went to bed at midnight last night, and my
husband sat up with her for awhile. She passed away at 1am this morning. He
said it was really hard to watch her go, but at least he was there for her in
her last moments.

We buried her in front of a huge rock that is on our lawn across the yard
from our picture window. Her favorite place to sit was on the loveseat in
front of that window, staring outside, so now she can still see her favorite
spot.

Afterwards, we went out collecting rocks from the ditches around our area. I
want to make a big rock garden over and around her grave, and plant flowers in
amongst the rocks...maybe some daisies.

I just need to figure out a way to write her name on the rock. She was such
a gentle soul. At least she had 12 good years she wouldn't have otherwise
lived if we hadn't found her.

Well, Tomi seems to be doing much better after his crash 2 weeks ago. He
is acting alot more like his normal self, though I think he still is a little
anemic. I don't understand how his PCV can go so low, then go back up on its
own. I am hoping all the prayers helped him and he will continue to improve.

I'm weaning him off the Prednisone, and though I can't get him to eat
anything other than chicken liver and dry food, at least he is eating again.
I've tried about 12 different brands of quality canned foods, plus homemade,
and he will only take a few licks before he runs off licking and scratching
himself.

We seem to be destined for only a small break in fortune though, as our
oldest cat, Koda, is now dying. We found Koda about 12 years ago. She was
emaciated, and her ears, nose, and feet were frostbitten. We're not sure how
old she was, but we guess she was at least 2-3 years at the time.

Last summer she was diagnosed with diabetes, which we've controlled mainly
with diet. Recently, we noticed she was quite constipated, and took her to the
vet for an enema. She seemed fine up to that point, even though she was
constipated. When we brought her home though, she wouldn't eat (very odd for
her), and was lethargic.

We took her back to the vet, and she ended up spending 2 days and 2 nights
there. They said her kidneys and liver were failing. We brought her home
today, since they couldn't do much more for her. At least she will be more
comfortable at home. I don't think she will last the weekend though. She's
too weak to move, and feels cold. She is also crying some, and I hope she is
not in pain :(.

I guess i'm hoping she will somehow pull through this like Tomi did. I
just wish that my family could get out of crisis for awhile and return to
normal.

Prednisone - Thank You

2007-05-13 Thread Teresa
What a gratifying thing to get such caring and educational replies from
you folks about my Timmy. I guess we get so used to bearing the burden
on our own shoulders that we forget there are kindred souls out there
doing the same thing.

Well I am familiar with pred and its evils, I am unfortunately on it
because of rheumatoid arthritis for which I refuse to take the going
drugs, which are linked to lymphoma and blindness, both of which my
father had, so my risk is increased right there. But I sure need
SOMETHING. Plus, I have osteoporosis so I definitely should not take
pred. So I take Miacalcin for that. The options are not very attractive
in this business of getting old and sick!

As for my vet, he did say something to the effect that pred can be and
is used in felv cats to suppress some of the symptoms and assist in
managing it, not that it impacts the disease and of course with the
understanding of its undermining the immune system. My previous vets
before I moved also used pred for various things and actually, I do,
too, with my large population of all sorts of not only conditions but
personalities. I will use it briefly for a cat who is so miserable it
won't eat, can't smell food, can't breathe because of nasal discharge,
etc. Usually it will get them eating pronto and get them over that hump
without force feeding. I started this with the previous vets who would
spike their initial shot of antibiotics in the office, for such things
as severe URI's and urinary problems. It can get them peeing without
being catheterized quite frequently. So this is the type of usage I use
it for. I also have a cat who is pretty blind, who has seizures and I
give it to him during spells when he's having more seizures. I have a
couple cats who have severe stomatitis that nothing has worked for, so I
use steroids for them to try to manage it. I know it sounds like I use
it a lot but it's really not that much per cat and it's only after I and
the vet have tried other things first. I try to keep it to surge type
treatments and wean them off it asap. But I find it very valuable for
sick cats. We have also used it for various cancers we have dealt with.
Right now I have one who has a very ugly, nasty, runny tumor in his ear
that has been removed once but came right back, and I don't think he
could survive without his steroids, that thing gets out of control
without them. We are looking for a specialist to operate again. The
tumor is benign.

In Timmy's current situation, he just got the upper respiratory that is
still going around my brood but actually, he's been snotty in the nose
since I got him some months ago, but it wasn't severe. I treated with
clavamox at first and that was good except for the couple deep bites and
all the scratches I got giving it to him, but it came right back and
since it didn't seem to be bothering him and he wasn't sneezing it
around, he was eating and acting very well, I figured I'd save the
antibiotics for down the road when I figured we'd need them more.
Actually I treated a couple times, once with baytril., but no steroids
till this time. This time he got real sick with it as did my negatives
who got it, some did die very quickly from it. We don't know what it is
except it's viral. I've had a horrible winter with it, the worst of my
life as far as sick cats. It's been a nightmare. But Timmy stopped
eating suddenly and nothing tempted him, I tried all my tricks, salmon,
etc etc, I have a cupboardfull. I got him on baytril immediately and
then some dex and did get an immediate response from that in the eating
department and he's been eating well ever since. He's been on it several
days and today I am going to look very closely at starting the tapering
process.

No, I'm sure Timmy wasn't at this place more than a day or 2 at most
because believe me, I monitor the whole area thoroughly on a daily
basis. I do a roundup a little ways away from the actual farm buildings
and provide food every day. Actually the dumping has gone way down the
last year+. Before that, it was SEVERAL new ones per week. Now there has
only been a few the whole winter and spring so far. All the locals know
what I am doing etc. I even had the game commission people checking on
me because someone called them saying I was acting suspiciously...Word
gets around. This is a very small-town, rural area. Anyhow, I know who
is there and who is new today. I have even, let's say, gone places
perhaps I should not have gone, in order to rescue some, knowing they
needed rescued! There is no way he was there surviving and going blind
from the taurine thing.

Believe me, I would dearly love to step in and not only feed the
farmer's cats, but try and doctor them to a certain extent too, and
especially spay and neuter. There are no subsidized programs around
here. But there is just no way I could ever broach the subject with this
farmer. Besides, I am managing all this

Please allow Charlie Brown to leave this world the way he wants to. It is
so very difficult. I did it with the Royal Princess Kitty Katt and have
never regretted it. He loves you so very much. Make sure and tell him it
is ok to leave when he is ready and that you will be ok-that he will

Yeap. Colloidal silver- that's what my vet prescribed. I'm still waiting for
him to get back with some for me. Abu's not on chemo yet as we've not
confirmed what the lump is yet - we'll be doing that on Thursday (please
pray for him that its dissapeared by thursday).

Another thing, has anyone tried Renafood? I can't get them to ship the item

my vet's prescription. They'll only take a US based vet's prescription.

I so need to help Abu. I'm going to work hard to get my baby better.

The oil is also used as a flea http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flea
repellant for pets. This latter usage is the origin of the plant's Latin
species name, the flea being /Pulex irritans/. However the distantly
related American Pennyroyal
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Pennyroyal or /Hedeoma
pulegioides/ is the source of much of what is called /*pennyroyal oil*/.

Hi, everyone something awful happened to one of my diabetic kitty, Leo -
I boarded him at my vet clinic over night and something awful happened
- they might have gave him (or may not have) too much insulin and his
glucose level got too low - and he was almost in coma yesterday, -
since no one at the clinic over night, we don't know how long he was in
the condition - they gave him injections to bring his glucose up right
away, he became conscious - but he is still having a seizures - the vet
thinks it is probably due to the fact that he was out of oxygen for a
long time..-now he seems to be developing neurogical sign - he can't or
does not want to lay down, but rather stretching his both arms spread
and sleeping flat - and he goes circle when he gets seizures - the vet
think he may overcome it but, there is nothing they can do - maybe fluid
went to his brain or his brain is swollen - he is also running fever -
anyone has any experience about symptoms like this - if you do please
share - I am so devastated as he was just a happy healthy boy before I
took him there!

Dear Sheila,
Please know that both you Charlie will be in my prayers.
I know you must be so heartbroken. What a wonderful life you have given
him
Reading your story reminded me of my Mr. Chow - the first fur baby I had w/
Felv. This was YEARS ago, no testing, blah, blah, blah..
I saved him when we had the Three Mile Island incident here. His owner
decided to leave town was going to put him in a shelter.. That I
couldn't take... Long family history w/ Mr. Chow, her ex-husband had mom,
Casey,
I had Pee Wee, a sibling from another litter.. I couldn't bear the
thought of what would happen to him in a shelter. (And I did have Casey
spayed after the last litter w/ Pee Wee)
Mr. Chow was gorgeous, LH, red, ever so sweet..
I had him for many wonderful years, he brought so much love happiness to
me.
Then one day he just collapsed. No warning, no other problems... I was
devastated took him immediately to vet...
They did many tests. He showed no signs of what his problem was..
So, I decided to have that thing [can't remember the word, sorry], and he
had lymphoma [BIG TIME].due to Felv. which was discovered doing
primary/initial BW. (After MANY years, things changed...)
Apparently he had lived w/ Felv for a long time...When they had put him
under for the procedure, things looked REAL bad. And he was in so much
pain
I reluctantly made the decision NOT to bring him back from anesthesiaHis
prognosis was so very bad.
Broke my heart, but I loved him so much, I didn't want him to have to endure
such a lousy life.
And, he DID live to be 14 Who knows how long he had Felv?
My Mr. Chow was my first encounter w/ Felv. And, bless him, that made a
major difference. I NEEDED to know all/anything about this dreaded
disease.
All this just proves Felv is NOT a death sentence. Only wish more vets,
rescues, etc. would feel the same way :(
Having been involved w/ shelter I know only too well that many Felv cats can
live a long life.
Just wanted to let you know you're both in my prayers
And, share my story.. (Maybe already did, but this memory/brain
thing, well, that says it all.)
Much love hugs,

Patti her gang

Re: Prednisone - Thank You

2007-05-13 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The cat with the ear tumor would be MUCH better off long-term by having the
ear removed than by being on pred long-term. There is a very involved, but
effective total ear abalation surgery that removes the entire ear canal,
including the inner and outer ear, and usually leaves a normal looking ear
flap, but if the tumor involves the flap, you could take that as well. If
it's only on the flap, of course, that's VERY easy to remove.

I have not heard of Pred being used for seizures, but I could be wrong
there.

The extreme nasal discharge you are describing sounds like it began as a
Herpes outbreak, or possibly Calici, and has since turned into a bacterial
nasal infection in some of your cats. I would advise stronger or different
antibiotics if you are not seeing improvement within 1 week of starting your
current antibiotics. Another thing worth trying is testing the mucous for
fungal infection, which often is something that is overlooked unless the
owner specifically requests it be checked for.
Here is a lab service that can test for most URI issues:
http://www.zoologix.com/dogcat/Datasheets/FelineRespiratoryPanel.htm
But, I would consider also doing a fungal test, at least for the most common
nasal fungal infection, Cryptococcosis, as it is a serious issue if left
untreated (the fungus can eat out the bones in the face if left to fester -
it can also lead to some of the other symptoms you mentioned in your other
cats, like blindness, and seizures - it's all around a NASTY thing that
should be seriously considered if antibiotics do not help).

leave them unprotected for heartworms. Awareness is ok around
here..we even have a billbord on I-35 - One heartworm can kill your

So many times I find it is a matter of picking which option is less

Bless you Teresa, for being you:)
Prednisone can be very effective with helping a number of things, you simply
have to be aware of its effect on the immune system with long term use and
weigh the benefits. With my Ninja, it controlled her seizures (believed to be
caused by a meningioma) quite well for about 3 months when we had to add
phenobarbital to the mix. She was seizure-free for her last 2 months:)

Your crew is very lucky to have you as a caretaker.

I've spoken about this with other list members (and my therapist) about how
there seems to be an inverse relationship between wealth and compassion. There
are always exceptions to any rule, but I have run into this one an awful lot
since I've been on the fringes of rescue and involved with this list.

He's been on it several
days and today I am going to look very closely at starting the

Subject: Charlie Brown - Long

My Charlie Brown is leaving me. This wonderful old man has been with me for
fifteen years. I've never had a sweeter or smarter cat in my life. He was
diagnosed with felv four years ago. The doctor said he was very sick and he
wouldn't make it another week and wanted to put him down, He wouldn't even give
me antibiotics to try and help his respiratory infection. I brought him home
gave him amoxi drops I had from another kitties uri bout, food and water and
round the clock love and care. He started to improve right away and had been
healthy and happy for four more years. Two days ago I woke to find him unable
to walk. I thought he wouldn't make it through the morning, but he is still
here. I know in my heart that he does not want to be put down in a doctors
office he is fighting so hard to stay, as sick as he is he still tries to crawl
to food plate. He doesn't want me to syringe feed him, he wants me to hold him
over his plate so he can eat own his own. He is the toughest
little guy I have ever known and I am so grateful for the last four years we
have had together. Please pray for us both. Sheila
