Anyway, it would seem, if this is the case ,with a

2007-08-05 Thread Susan Dubose
I have forwarded to some other groups that I know have branches in the SF area.

Yes, this is our biggest nightmare.

It happened to my vet, who has 70+ cats.

Luckily, the fire dept. came very quickly.

The dryer caught fire.

Always clean the lint, and have done professionally @ least once per year.

And NEVER run it if you are not home.

While Sheila always cleaned out the lint, it can also collect inside the
dryer the vent, very dangerous.

Her mother, who has since passed away, was in her room completely unaware the
house was on fire.

She had dementia, and had turned on the dryer.

Sheila had just ran to the store up the street for something, and her daughter
just happened to stop in to visit, which probably saved everything, house, cats
 mom.

Is this for human alpha that you give orally or felin omega interferon -

the main reason you give human alpah on and off, is because a cat will
eventually build immunity to human alpha if you give continuously - but it does
not happen for a few months - so eventually, I would suggest that you want to
switch to feline omega interferon (you can dilute it and give it to her orally
like you do for alpha -- but she will not build immunity to it like she may for
human alpah..) - but it's safe to give her continuously otherwise..

Re: Vaccinating kittens of unknown status against FeLV?

2007-08-05 Thread catatonya
In my opinion I would vaccinate. My positives were vaccinated before testing
positive and it did them no harm. There is always a chance that you might pick
up a stray cat and bring it home and then your cats would not be vaccinated. I
do not re-vaccinate except every 3 years, but I do start out with the 2
vaccines. I think the vaccine has been proven by those on this list to do more
good than harm. I do not worry at all about mixing a positive cat with my
vaccinated cats.

Subject: Vaccinating kittens of unknown status against FeLV?

I adopted two kittens from a farm who are 8 weeks old right now.
They are scheduled to go in for their vaccinations at 10 weeks, and
the clinic mentioned that the FeLV vaccination is standard now. I
asked if they should be tested first to make sure they don't have
FeLV, and they said it didn't matter.

I am wondering what your opinions are on this. I don't know if
these kittens have ever been exposed, but I do know that 10 weeks is
too soon to reliably test for the virus. Is it safe to go ahead and
vaccinate, not knowing if they are infected or not?

I'm not even positive I want that vaccine, but it may be a good
idea. The kittens will eventually be able to go outside in
chain-link enclosure that we've built, so it is unlikely they will
have contact with other cats, but its always possible some contact
could occur through the fence. We live outside of the city now, but
there are a few cats belonging to neighbours that wander through
from time to time (they mostly stay out of the yard due to our dog).

I've always been told it doesn't hurt to vaccinate a positive cat. If I had a
kitten that tested positive I would vaccinate it anyway hoping that the
positive is a false positive or that the kitten has only been exposed and is
fighting off the virus.

Something that I discovered today is that it’s NOT him going to the bathroom
in the kitchen; it’s our OTHER FLV+ cat, Miles. Now Miles is about 4 years
old, seems perfectly healthy, eats and drinks, plays, etc. I HAVE noticed that
last couple of weeks though he’s been being REALLY affectionate, and I haven’t
been able to spend as much time with him and Holly (our 5 year old cat who does
NOT have felv) as I usually do because I’ve been so busy with Moe. Is it
possible that Miles has started to use the kitchen as his own personal bathroom
because he’s jealous of the attention that Moe is getting and trying to get our
attention? I KNOW it’s Miles, because he didn’t hear me get up this morning,
and Moe was lying on my pillow next to my head (like he normally does), and I
got up went out to the kitchen, and he must not have heard me, because I caught
him red handed doing his business. I made loud noises, and stuff, but I don’t
know why he’s doing this. He has been
acting kind of weird. Like if we’re in the bathroom taking a shower or using
the toilet and the door is closed, he’ll sit outside it and just HOWL. Never
did this until a few weeks ago. I figured it was because he was worried about
Moe, but now not so sure.

Also, how much does heat effect felv?
We LOVE the heat, and try not to use the air conditioner, but it’s going to
get pretty warm here in the next week or so, and I was just wondering if I
should turn the air on for the cats?

Thanks again everyone. I’m so glad I found you all!

Subject: [ar-ga] Eukanuba's spokeperson - Dog Fighting - 'Fabric of America'

Vick had a bad error in judgement If you aren't already boycotting
Eukanuba for experimenting on dogs, then this should help you make a decision.
  http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/headline/sports/4984096.html
Once 'fabric of America' J.T. Thomas — representing the event's sponsor, pet
food maker Eukanuba — offered a tempered viewpoint. It's because of Vick's own
background — suggested Thomas, a younger brother of the 1960s-era Oilers
cornerback W.K. Hicks — that people should attempt to understand how the former
Virginia Tech star could have become involved.

Once upon a time dogfighting, just like cockfighting, used to be a part of
the fabric of America, said Thomas, of Pasadena. Just like with a lot of
other things, loopholes have been closed. It sometimes takes people awhile to
understand what you used to do and what you can do now aren't always one in the
same. Sometimes you have to learn this the hard way, and that's happening with
him. This was not murder. This was not a capital crime. This was, possibly, a
bad error in judgment. We can make a federal case out of it if we want to, but

I talked to a lady last night (I'm not sure the name, I was asleep -
she didn't know I was in TX) who was returning Susan's calls.

I have soem people on the PF boards who are willing to help with
material items..does she need litterboxes, flea meds, cat meds,
carriers...litter scoops..all the little things you could lose and not
think of...

This lady told me the thing they need most is homes or foster homes
for cats. Unfortunately I am unable to help with that, from Texas.

Has a fund been started to help in this time of need?
I have some that would like to help donate.

Re: Vaccinating kittens of unknown status against FeLV?

2007-08-05 Thread glenda Goodman
Hi guys,
Yesterday I took my two sibling kittens in for their
second feline leukemia vaccination. My little poly
guys I got out of Arizona...They had their first
vacination June 30th...
Anyway, I had not had them tested before their first
vaccination, because their mother tested negative and
they had been kept away from other cats...I want to
trust that they were before I got them. Their foster
mom told me she kept them in her bathroom with their
mother, while they were still nursing. Things do
happen, but I also felt they were too young to subject
to a test before I got them at roughly 8-weeks of age.
I vaccinated them for the first time at about 11-weeks
and the second at 15-weeks. There are a lot of people
out there that probably think I was very wrong, but I
do believe in vaccinating, especially now more than
ever ,because I have one FeLV+ kitty in our family of
seven kitties. I do keep her completely isolated. I
NEVER let her mix. There have been times she has
touched noses through a screen or crack in the door...
with one of my vaccinated cats...I wash my hands a
lot...the whole thing...She is only allowed outside
with me while I'm working in my yard or she stays in
her room.
My cats have always been vaccinated and in the past,
have always been boostered every year.
I do realize, as a group, we know more than any vet
out there, but yesterday, I told my vet some of you
guys believed a FeLV vaccination might make a
negative cat test positive. She said that could not
happen ,because it is a killed virus... I think people
are getting mixed up with the FIV vaccine ,which does
make a negative cat test positive. I also have a hard
time believing, if your cat is positive and you
vaccinate, it could kick the disease into gear...I
think I ran that past my vet ,but she just did not
know ,but I'm sure she is doubtful. Yesterday I had
put my little boy kitty, of the pair down to be
tested, but after discussing things with the vet and
vet tech, thinking is was a slim to nonexistant chance
my guys could be positive, I have decided to wait. I
eventually will have everyone tested...
At one time or another everyone has been tested,
except my 12-13 year old...He has been with me all
those years and vaccinated...but he has been
indoor/outdoor. I , of course feel nervous and scared
or I'm sure I would have done the tests already...I
have not recovered from the news on my recently
addition, Gracie, testing positive...As most of us
know and have experienced it is gut wrenching when
that test comes back positive...Your heart falls out
of your chest, to put it mildly...Because we are only
human, not perfect, I think too, we all have our
favorie cats...For a favorite , most adored, I can
only imagine...Everyone have a good day!

In my opinion I would vaccinate. My positives were
vaccinated before testing positive and it did them
no harm. There is always a chance that you might
pick up a stray cat and bring it home and then your
cats would not be vaccinated. I do not re-vaccinate
except every 3 years, but I do start out with the 2
vaccines. I think the vaccine has been proven by
those on this list to do more good than harm. I do
not worry at all about mixing a positive cat with my
 vaccinated cats.

To Glenda Re: using the media for the fire/Leslie's miracle story

2007-08-05 Thread wendy
Hey Glenda,

The thing we may have to be careful of in this situation is the media. They
might put Susan in her one bedroom apartment with all those cats on TV, and I
don't know what the pet limit laws are in San Francisco, but I'm betting animal
control will get involved. If the media only covered the fire and gave out
Susan's contact info., that would be great, but I'm betting they'll want to
know where the cats are now for the story, which probably wouldn't be good.

The media, however, can be used for good in some situations. We had a member
here, Leslie, back in October whose cats got carjacked in Washington state, if
you can believe it! Thanks to the media (TV coverage), she got both her
wonderful cats back in a matter of time, a couple of days or so. The thief
left the car with the windows open in a retail area, and the cats got out. It
is a miracle they weren't killed. One was found at a shelter and the other
hanging around one of the stores, I believe. It's one of my all time favorite
stories now.

:)

I know...don't you just hate that. I read a quote by Dan Greenberg, a
screenwriter, who wrote, There is, incidentally, no way of talking about cats
that enables one to come off as a sane person. lololol...

so true, so i prefer to be insane...

Wendy, I thought of that...I know in general, anyone
with a lot of cats is considered wacky...I do know ,
however ,no matter what people think of the people
involved, the kitties will get sympathy. I just was
not sure if she could project herself as a
shelter/rescue...It was just a thought to munch
on...Thank you for bringing this point up...It is a
very excellent/true observation...Glenda

 Hey Glenda,

The thing we may have to be careful of in this
situation is the media. They might put Susan in her
one bedroom apartment with all those cats on TV, and
I don't know what the pet limit laws are in San
Francisco, but I'm betting animal control will get
involved. If the media only covered the fire and
gave out Susan's contact info., that would be great,
but I'm betting they'll want to know where the cats
are now for the story, which probably wouldn't be
 good.

The media, however, can be used for good in some
situations. We had a member here, Leslie, back in
October whose cats got carjacked in Washington
state, if you can believe it! Thanks to the media
(TV coverage), she got both her wonderful cats back
in a matter of time, a couple of days or so. The
thief left the car with the windows open in a retail
area, and the cats got out. It is a miracle they
weren't killed. One was found at a shelter and the
other hanging around one of the stores, I believe.
It's one of my all time favorite stories now.

  Hi guys,

I put flea medication on my cat's back 2-3 weeks ago. We left for a short
vacation (4 days) and when we returned, she had this big sore on her back about
the size of a quarter. The hair and top layers of skin were gone, and it was
just raw skin, so I started spraying Bactine on it. After a few days of that, I
could tell it was infected, so I put her on antibiotics (Clavamox), and the
infection (pus) went away. I also started putting topical antibiotics on it.
But even after several days of this, it is still not scabbing over! I am fairly
sure it's a reaction to the flea meds, because my dog had the same reaction a
few weeks before, but Bactine worked great on her. Although, it could be a
spider bite or something else. Any ideas on what I can do for her now or what
might be causing it? What about liquid skin? Has anyone used the human formula
on their cats? I know it's not ringworm. I know what that looks like and it's
not this! I can send a
pic to anyone if you think you might be able to help by looking at the sore. I
don't want to wrap gauze around her b/c she will just tear it off. Thanks guys!

Thanks,

Re: Thanks, Wendy!--OT, but what has been going on over here

2007-08-05 Thread Taylor Scobie Humphrey
Wow! Thanks, Wendy! I kind of missed myself there for a while.
What with poor little Sammy's FeLV and lymphoma and all the other
things going on in my life I went into overload.

Sammy went out of remission five weeks ago and was started on a
rescue protocol and immediately went back into remission but last
week-end, a few days after his second rescue protocol chemotherapy,
he had an enormously hard time of it. The rescue protocol really
took it out of him. His neutrophil count hit the skids, he was molto
lethargic and his body temp went down to 95!--after he had been at
his emergency vet, Animal 911, for a while!--so into oxygen on a
warming pad with warmed fluids he went. It was touch and go, I was
only allowed to look through the oxygen room glass for a very short
time, and he stirred and cried when he heard my voice. Oh, my God,
it was pitiful! We talked of the possibility of PTS and DNR in
another room--away from little Sam, of course, and I went out to buy
him, in tears, a beautiful little pink baby blankie to bury him in.
But, bingo, he snapped back as his neutrophil count began to rise on
its own, thank God!

So, the FeLV has not hit his bone marrow (that was the crappy chemo)
and he's working hard to keep his immune system perking. The next
morning he had eaten (yum yum, baby chicken), was breathing on his
own, and looked very perky but fatigued, I believe, as we drove to a
24-hour emergency clinic about five miles away--because he still
needed monitoring and I wanted him to have oxygen availability. The
emergency doc thought he looked a little peaky, however, and later
that afternoon his RBC's dropped and he had a blood transfusion--
whew! Talk about the little guy being in the right place at the
right time!

He came home Tuesday afternoon in his beautiful new pink Homecoming
blankie! I called his internal oncologist, a wonderful woman by the
name of Amy Wiedemann, DVM, ACVIM for those of you in the Chicago
area, and she said he had always been anemic (well, not THAT anemic)
since she met him nearly four months ago. She told me that she
thinks Sammy is constantly amazing her--because he is still with us
here on Earth, sigh!

Sammy is now on anti-nausea meds, which is like trying to pill a
dragon/crocodile/little baby with about fifteen little clawed feet
all paddling at me and anything in my hands away from his leetle
mouf, which is clamped shut like a little parakeet's. So I called
Animal 911 to see if I could bring him in for pilling and they said
yes, we're mobbed. Come on in and we'll do it! So I bundled Sam up
with his adorable little Big Sister Lilibet (Little Adoptive Mommy to
the triplets) for company because she is so calm and off we went.
Fortunately it's only ten or twelve minutes away on quiet streets.
And they WERE mobbed! Yikes!

I was there yesterday, Saturday, with Sammy's giant brother Charlie
because I thought he had a bladder infection but it was just (always
after the regular vet has closed) a tiny bit of intestinal trouble--
just looked like it was from his bladder. Oh, my Lord!

Plus both the washing machine and the DW have given up the ghost so
I'm a virtual unwashed, unmade bed (and by this time I don't even
notice!) with a sinkful of dishes, off to--finally!--buy W/D and DW
for my mom's house on Monday. Next? Try all new windows, a new
microwave, an oven that actually works, a new fridge. Yes, it's the
joys of taking care of Elderly Mommy! Oh--and she lost more of her
sight over the last month or so, too.

And constantly watching over the little one.

When are the trees going to start raining money, eh?

Love to all of you from me 'n' the small, four-footed brood,

Tee
