[Felvtalk] First Doses of Imulan For Murphy Rosie

2009-09-19 Thread Alice Flowers
We have our fingers crossed!! We arrived at our vet's office right after the
shipment arrived. Rosie and Murphy had their exams and blood drawn for
baselines-CBCs and their 3rd FeLV tests. We have previous tests from June 3rd
this year also. Those tests showed that Murphy's levels were changing (similar
to Schatzi's who just passed less than a month ago). We are really concerned
for our last 2 cats because Rosie (tabby) is the only female of the litter of
5-her 4 brothers have passed away in the last 5 months from severe anemia. She
has just turned a year old last month-she insists on a game of fetch several
times a day with her lamb's wool mouse. (she has plucked most of the wool
off and I can't find another one.) Murphy is a semi long haired, polydactyl,
tuxedo boy with 7 toes on each front foot and a spare on each hind foot-He was
dumped into the feral colony that Rosie and her brothers came from. He is the
sweetest boy, so playful and just wants to
hang out with you-he follows you around like a dog. He looks like he
has Ov-Gloves on! Anyway-this disease seems like a switch is flipped on and
there is nothing we can do to save them-we are hoping that using this product
before the symptoms of anemia appear will give us some chance of them surviving
for a long time. Maybe by taking a proactive approach we will be able to turn
the odds a little. We are beginning with one injection a week for a month, then
every two weeks...to once a month. Blood will be drawn every two weeks at
first. We had the first injections at the vet's office today (the tech
did Murphy's and she watched while I gave Rosie's). I will be giving the
remaining 8 doses at home to save costs. We'll have the blood test results back
Monday. Say a little prayer for us.

Michael Johnson,

I'm new here but saw your name on this forum and read that
you have an FeLV Sanctuary. I was wondering for future
reference whether you are full or still have openings for
FeLV fur babies. I am caring for three with one on Imulan
and one receiving intravenous ascorbic acid weekly for his
lymphosarcoma and I also have more cats than I should
mention that are healthy and do not have the virus.

Because we are so full and our vet costs so significant
right now, I cannot take in any more FeLV cats that come my
way but we hear of them occasionally. My husband and I
would gladly try to scrape together the $500 on an
individual cat basis for any FeLV cats that would otherwise
be euthanized if we knew you could take them . It would be
good to have your contact information for use in the future.

Thanks, and God bless you for what you do for these
unfortunate but very lucky felines.

temper. i am patient with animals, but short with people. you know what to
expect from animals, but people are a different story. as indians said, we do
tend to speak wth forked tongue sometimes.
so lets get off the bashing of people, we can't control their actions and

glad someone else is having good luck with their babies. my Lil Bit was
looking pretty rough and had lost a lot of weight so took her to vet and did a
full panel on her and strted fluids and antibiotic right away. learned one
thing, warm up the fluids to your own body temperature before giving them to
your cat. she fused with me the first time (hadn't thought about warming
fulids) then i got smart and put the bag in a bowl of warm water first. she
still did not like getting stuck, but things went a lot smoother after that.
did fluids 2 times a day. when blood work came back, her creatine and bun
readings were off the chart. went back last week for recheck since she was
looking much better, eatng better and her counts are normal. that baby food
sure did come in handy during that time. it was easy for her to eat and she
did like it. did not have to feed her, she ate it on her own. how lucky can a
body get? continued good fortune for all with sick babies, it is almost as
hard on us as it is on them. like a mother caring for her sick child. dorlis

I just wanted to give you a quick update on Autumn. I got the full results
of the CBC (although a path review is pending). Here are the results:

 Platlet count - first CBC = 20,000; most recent = 52,000 (up 32,000)
Hct - first = 9; most recent 11.5 - difficult to compare due to transfusion

 Here's the kicker:

 reticulocyte count - most recent 5.9% (normal = 0-1%) Sorry I don't have the
 original
 Absolute reticulocyte count - first = 11,000; most recent = 113,280 (up
 102,000)

A quick background note - the reticulocyte count is an indicator of bone
marrow regenerating normal RBCs - reticulocytes are young maturing RBCs
Regenerative anemia is considered to be present when the absolute retic.
count is greater than 15,000. Before the injection she had a non
regenerative anemia, now it is regenerative.

She is producing her own RBCs and platlets! Amen and Hallelujah!

Thank you everyone for your prayers and hope. I will keep you updated.

Here is a link to some general info on high BP.

There is a Yahoo heart group that has may be able to help with the meds and

You should be able to purchase the meds at your local pharmacy with a Rx from
a vet. Usually the 1st choice for cats is Amlodipine for high BP.

A vet who has been practicing for over 40 yrs may not be current on what is
now available for special needs kitty. If possible she needs to be seen by a

He is having a hard time calculating
the dosage for some reason.  I am not a

CRF,  I have kind of a specialty with heart disease

absolutely fine.  We did not believe she was as old as
  she is, she does not
act like it.  I do feel bad for her.  Obviously
  her previous owner did not
want to pay to fix what was wrong.  I have never had
to wait this long but I
do not want her to get the wrong dosage.  This vet has
  been in practice

glad someone else is having good luck with their babies. my Lil Bit was
looking pretty rough and had lost a lot of weight so took her to vet and did
a full panel on her and strted fluids and antibiotic right away. learned
one thing, warm up the fluids to your own body temperature before giving
them to your cat. she fused with me the first time (hadn't thought about
warming fulids) then i got smart and put the bag in a bowl of warm water
first. she still did not like getting stuck, but things went a lot smoother
after that. did fluids 2 times a day. when blood work came back, her
creatine and bun readings were off the chart. went back last week for
recheck since she was looking much better, eatng better and her counts are
normal. that baby food sure did come in handy during that time. it was
easy for her to eat and she did like it. did not have to feed her, she ate
it on her own. how lucky can a body get? continued good fortune for all
with sick babies, it is almost as hard on us as it is on them. like a
mother caring for her sick child. dorlis

We have our fingers crossed!! We
arrived at our vet's office right after the shipment
arrived. Rosie and Murphy had their exams and blood drawn
for baselines-CBCs and their 3rd FeLV tests. We have
previous tests from June 3rd this year also. Those tests
showed that Murphy's levels were changing (similar to
Schatzi's who just passed less than a month ago). We are
really concerned for our last 2 cats because Rosie (tabby)
is the only female of the litter of 5-her 4 brothers have
passed away in the last 5 months from severe anemia. She has
just turned a year old last month-she insists on a game of
fetch several times a day with her lamb's wool mouse. (she
has plucked most of the wool off and I can't find another
one.) Murphy is a semi long haired, polydactyl, tuxedo boy
with 7 toes on each front foot and a spare on each hind
foot-He was dumped into the feral colony that Rosie and her
brothers came from. He is the sweetest boy, so playful and
 just wants to
hang out with you-he follows you around like a dog. He
looks like he has Ov-Gloves on! Anyway-this disease seems
like a switch is flipped on and there is nothing we can do
to save them-we are hoping that using this product before
the symptoms of anemia appear will give us some chance of
them surviving for a long time. Maybe by taking a proactive
approach we will be able to turn the odds a little. We
are beginning with one injection a week for a month, then
every two weeks...to once a month. Blood will be drawn every
two weeks at first. We had the first injections at the vet's
office today (the tech did Murphy's and she watched while I
gave Rosie's). I will be giving the remaining 8 doses at
home to save costs. We'll have the blood test results back
Monday. Say a little prayer for us.

Would love to know how long your cat had been FeLV positive
before being started on Imulan's LTCI and how long he was on
the Imulan before the FeLV negative blood test? My cat just
received his third injection and though he was heading into
anemia and had stopped eating, with syringe feeding and
three shots on board he's no worse than he was, so we're
hopeful. Still, it would be wonderful to know what type of
time frame we're looking at for any hope of a negative FeLV
status with the LTCI.

Thanks so much!
